"just by coming in here having fun and it's a diffferent activity and it's a healthy activity and it's a good choice," said jim hallum. (john diamantopoul os/rochester resident) "it's good to know that they're are people in the background doing this kind of stuff you don't see this but they're doing their job great it's reassuring for us." the new year is neerly here. and thanks to federal law enforcement, in rochester...it's looking to be the start of a safe 2016. >> a sioux city man has pleaded not guilty to charges in connection to a home invasion and beating of a teen. 21-year-old austin cummings pleaded not guilty to first and second degree robbery, going armed with intent and assault. police say cummings was one of two men who entered the home of jodi blackwell in the 26- street earlier this month. the men asked for drugs s d money. police say the victims believe they had the wrong house. blackwell's 19-year-old son was tied up and beaten with a crowbar while blackwell was held at gunpoint. the thieves took multiple video game systems, a tv and cell phone. more details emerging about an cherokee, iowa woman who faces an attempted murder charge after police say she crashed into another vehicle on purpose. according totoourt documents, melissa ebert and the front seat passenger, got involved in an argument. that's when documents say ebert threatened to crash her vehicle. ebert collided head-on with another vehicle in plymouth county, iowa. the incident resulted in three people ending up with serious injuries. ebert also faces her second owi offense and a charge of serious injury by motor vehicle. nebraska's minimum wage is increasisi by a dollar to nine dollars an hour in 20- 16. the increase for non-tipped workers starts tomorrow. it's up from $8 an hour in 2015 and 7 dollars and 25 cents before that. the increase is the final phase minimum wage hike approved by voters in 2014. nebraska's last minimum wage increase before that was in 2009. alcohol sales in iowa climbed in the last year. the iowa alcoholic beverages division says sales increased to about $319 million. black velvet whiskey remained the top-selling distilled spirit, with sales of over 170,000 cases. per capita sales were highest in dickinson county. fremont county, in southwest iowa, had the lowest sales. a new contract with the largest union for sioux city staffers will make martin luther king jr. day a paid holiday starting in 2017. the two-year contract also includes pay raises of between 2.25 percent and 2.5 percent. a local gym is gearing up for an annual holiday tradition. new year's day of play is taking place today at the norm waitt sr. ymca in south sioux city. people and families can get in free to ring in the new year. sample a fitness class. "it takes me awhile. i get into character, i listen to kiss music, try to channel gene a little bit. yeah, it's fun!" with live music and entertainment, it was a great night for siouxlanders to welcome in the year 20-16. it's a classy new year's eve party for a younger crowd. siouxland's young professionals gathered to ring in the new year at the howard johnson hotel in downtown sioux city. the party was put on by the sioux city growth organization with hopes of attracting the up and coming professionals of sioux city for a fun night with a sophisticated touch. "every year it seems like i'm looking for a new year's eve event to attend and it's either the higher end events or some of the bar events, which are great, too. we wanted to kind of bridge that gap in between." said sioux city growth organization board president, britney sininger. "your young professionals sometimes just want something that's a little bit classier, but still fun, so that's kind of where we are, today." the party was set to continue midnight and beyond. it may still be going on! some in siouxland also turned to fireworks. lantis fireworks is in north sioux city, across the iowa-south dakota border. the family business has been around for more than 70 years. while the fourth of july is obviously their busiest time of year, new years eve also attracts those customers seeking some added excitement. "it's something celebratory like the fourth of july. it's our independance, get serious! and everything's going to change," said owner, don lantis. "it's a shotgun upupn the air, and that's what people would do. now, they can get their fireworks to shoot up and you have something pretty." a sparkling way to start 2016. the new year means it's time to start fresh and kick the bad habits of 2015. which means it's time to make your new year's resolution known. we went around sioux city to find out what t als those in the community have for 2016. and better for myself and others." "to do something better for sioux city" "peace on earth--no more wars, no more illness, no more deaths. it's time for us to stop being ruse tto everybody and be kind to everybody." "when the hawkeye fans come out, good or bad, we're always a good crew," said johnhnremmel. a crew that tremmel knows very well. as he walks through the taproom and knows pretty much everyone inside. though his spot is outside. "we decided once iowa lost to michigan, weweere going to go to just tailgate," said jennifer peterson. (sot: dr. chchles park, neurosurgeon) "before when we were kids, we were banging heads or something like that, and they'd say, 'ok, play through it. show us your toughness.'" but now, he says... there's a new awareness about recognizing and treating concussions. "i start three hours ahead of time," said meyer. "it takes me awhile. i get into character, i listen to kiss music, try to channel gene a little bit. yeah, it's fun!" with live music and entertainment, it was a great night for siouxlanders to welcome in the year 20-16. it's a classy new year's eve party for a younger crowd. siouxland's young professionals gathered to ring in the new year at the howard johnson hotel in downtown sioux city. the party was put on by the sioux city growth organization with hopes of attracting the up and coming professionals of sioux city for a fun night with a sophisticated touch. "every year it seems like i'm looking for a new year's eve event to attend and it's either the higher end events or some of the bar events, which are great, too. we wanted to kind of bridge that gap in b bween." said sioux city growthh organization board president, britney sininger. "your young professionals sometimes jusus want something that's a little bit classier, but still fun, so that's kind of where we are, today." the party was set to continue midnight and beyond. it may still be going on! some in siouxland also turned to fireworks. lantis fireworkskss in north sioux city, across the iowa-south dakota border. the family business has been around for more than 70 years. while the fourth of july is obviously their busiest time of year, new years eve also attracts those customers seeking some added excitement. "most people watch the game while i'm grilling and i watch my radio," said john tremmel. >> no surprise that john is predicitng a hawkeye win. he thinks they'll win on a last second field goal. for fans, getting tickets took a little bit of work. we caught up with two fans on sioux falls. jennifer peterson and her friends had planned to go to the however, she found a holiday miracle. "we decided once iowa lost to michigan, we were going to go to just tailgate," said jennifer peterson.
