The benefits of having the asap unit is that anytime an officer on patrol stops a driver thehe think might be impaired, rather than tie that officer up for three officers to process that drunk driver, the members of my unit will take over that case and go through the drunk driving process and were able to put that Patrol Officer back on general patrol. Asap supervisor Sergeant Steve ten napel says members of the unit also become good witnesses and experts in drunk driving prosecution. Su since 2014, there have been 10 traffic fatalities in sioux city. A third of those were caused by impaired drivers. Mercy medical centers reality education Alcohol Program or reap partners with the asap unit to prevent those fatalities. Its proven that education is a better deterrant for people that have been convicted of drunk driving so this was our example of trying to educate these people by providing them with some reality type experiences.
