While the event honors difference makers, serious issues are talked about too. Like preventing discrimination, Voting Rights and how an indiviudal can positvely impact those issues. Sioux city is not a bad place to live, said flora lee, president of the sioux city naacp. We have our issues just like any other community but i think we do try quite often to work on those issues. I think we do need to chip away at looking at discrimination and inequalities this is the only fundraiser the chapter does each year. They hold it during black history month. Just across the Missouri River at the marina inn, stars hosted a big fundraiser. Special Troopers Adaptive Riding School is what that stands for. They use horses and dogs as therapy for physical, emotional and socially challenged individuals. Executive director Stacy Pedersen says about 80 percent of funding comes from donations. Contributions also help keep operating costs low which helps keep the program running. Horses are expensive, said Stacy Pedersen, executive director of stars. We have 18 of those in our herd. The orange city fire chief says the expansion is all about the safety of the firefighters. Where we gear up is about three feet of the apparatus. When we respond to calls we have had some instances where some guys have bumped into each other and some stitches have been had, said orange city fire chief dennis vanderwel. Another safety concern. The lack of ventilation. It exposes the firefighters to high levels of contamination from diesel exhaust. We want to put that gear in a special room that is in a ventilated room. So when the guys come back from a call and the stuff is dirty; the stuff can get to the laundry right away and get the vanderwel.
