itself. there were employees in the building at the time of the fire, but they made it out safely. fire officials say that despite the difficult conditions, they got the fire out quickly. "typically this time of year we have a lot of concerns with freezing conditions. this is one of the fires that went really well though, especially considering the circumstances. we got water on the fire quickly. we were not hampered by any frozen hydrants or anything like that, luckily. everything worked smoothly this morninin" says mark aesoph, the sioux city fire marshal. no word yet on what started the fire, or any estimates of damage. they are just starting their investigation. also, since smoke from the fire filled the restaurant, the business will be closed today and until repairs can be made. still no word on what started a damaged a home in whiting, iowa. it broke out in the six- hundred block of stroud avenue at around 1-30 sunday afternoon. the home was fully engulfed in flames. no other details have been released at this point. investigators are working to determine what caused an explosion and fire that caused extensive damage to a historic downtown omaha building that housed a restaurant and apartments. several witnesses say they smelled natural gas at m's pub shortly before the explosion and subsequent fire saturday afternoon in the old market. two people were injured. firefighters stopped pouring water into the burned-out building this morning. omaha's fire chief says investigators haven't determined yet whether the structure can be salvaged. > weather ad-lib we'll see yet another frigid morning with windchills near 20 northeastern siouxland who are rest of the viviing area won't be much better off with air temperatures near 0, so be sure to remember the hats and gloves because it only takes a half-hour or so for frost-bite to set in on exposed skin. we will get some temperature relief teens and 20s with a mix of clouds and sunshine. a few snow showers will move through this evening which could put another coating of snow on the ground in some spots, but shouldn't result in much if any accumulation. we'll have a little speed bump in our warming efforts tomorrow with highs only expected to reach the lower teens before returning to the 20s and 30s the rest of the work week. don't get too used to it though because we're back in the teens this weekend. see graphics. >> the iowa legislature is now in session and a fight over school funding is looming. lawmakers were gaveled in this morning at ten. additional funding to provide to schools in a year with limited new dollars. governor terry branstad said today he will seek a 2.45 percent increase to basic state aid for schools. that's less than senate majority democrats nt to spend and more than house majority republicans have previously sought. ktiv's matt breen is covering opening day at the iowa statehouse. watch for his reports tonight on news four. the iowa caucus is three weeks from today and the latest poll shows the presidential race is neck-and-neck in both parties. the nbc newsws wall street journal marist poll says senator ted cruz leads donald trump by four points among likely republican caucus-goers. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is now just three points ahead of senator bernie sanders. when it comes to a hypothetical general election match-up, hillary clinton leads donald trump by eight points in iowa, but bernie sanders leads trump by 13 points. other republicananandidates fare better against the democrats. clinton by five points and is tied with sanders. senator ted cruz leads clinton by four points, but sanders beats cruz by five. the man who won iowa's republican caucus four years ago is back in siouxland, campaigning for president. former seantor ricicsantorum spoke to a group of f out 75 people at a house party last night in sac city. he's trailing in the polls and he says that's why it's important to get out and meet iowan face to face. "a lot can happen and the reason a lot can is becuase iowans don't pay attention to the national polls, they don't pay attention to what the experts say are best for them. they go out and do what these 75-80 people are doing here tonight; which is come out, meet the candidates, and kick the tires," saididick santorum, gop candidate. santorum continued his siouxland visit this morning with a town hall meeting in orange city. a maryland appeals court has delayed indefinitely the trial of the police van driver charged in the death of freddie gray. ltimore in the trial of caesar goodson. he's the second of six officers scheduled for trial. the manslaughter trial of officer william porter ended in december with a hung jury. goodson's case has been complicated after a judge ruled last week that porter must testify against goodson, despite porter's claim that he has a right not to incriminate himself. the music world is mourning the loss of one of its most unique singers and performers. . david bowie died of cancer last night. the british star leaves behind a colorful legacy. mark barger reports.
