Coast. That storm now blamed for nearly 300 deaths in haiti. Good morning, im ayman mohyeldin. Im frances rivera. The eye of Hurricane Matthew is growing dangerously closer to floridas east coast. Its still the strongest storm to hit the eastern seaboard in over a decade. Theyre fearing damage of historical proportions. Over 2 Million People have been risk their lives by hunkering down at home. William schneider gave this warning. People do not seem to get it. Im not leaving. And i have already checked. Im not saying this to be theatrical. You know me. I dont lean toward bravado, but i talked to my detective captain earlier today and asked him, do you have body bags . Are you prepared for mass casualties. Gusts, were going to have fatalities. Really drives home the impact. Matthews eyewall is brushing cape cunaveeral. Nasa space center shut down ahead of the storm, and even Walt Disney World closed its doors for the fourth time in its 45year history. A state of emergency is under effect under president obama and 3500 active guard members are 300,000 florida residents are without power, and some areas could get up to 15 inches of rain and deadly storm surges as high as 11 feet. All of this after leaving a trail of death and destruction across the caribbean. Haiti with at least 250 people killed. U. S. Officials hoping against a similar devastating loss. Lets go straight over to Bonnie Schneider who has been tracking matthew throughout the night for us. Whats the latest on the storms path . Watching with matthew, a powerful storm. You mentioned getting close to Daytona Beach and melbourne. Were seeing of the strongest winds getting close. Were not anticipating an actual landfall, not by the computer models, but we want to let everyone know because 11. 2 Million People are currently under a hurricane warning. Thats a really large number and it stretches along the coast to georgia and South Carolina. Right now, 120mileperhour winds. Not much of a change. The movement to the hour. Were watching for the storm, eventually, to curve up and around and possibly loop back, but that would be in a much weaker state. And not until the begin of next week. The immediate threat for storm surge is along the georgia coast, florth florida, and parts of southern South Carolina. Ron mott is in Daytona Beach where the impact of matthew is being felt. Give us the latest there. Well, good morning from a band after another of increasingly nasty weather, and the worst is jet to come. Now, we did get a little good news with the 11 00 eastern time update last night, which is forecast to push the eye a little further east once it gets into the Daytona Beach area. Thats good news. That usually will mean we wont see the strongest winds around the circulation of matthew. The winds still will be strong. Were airporting upwards of 90, maybe 100 Miles Per Hour sune least. The bad news is the eye is going to be in Daytona Beach right around the next high tide. Thats expected to occur around 12 45 p. M. This afternoon, and that is when the biggest threat from any sort of storm surge and flooding is to occur. Now. Its always the storm surge and the water that typically is responsible for a lot of the deaths we see in these hurricanes. Not so much the wind. So thats the hour where people the forecast at this hour is for upwards of 11 feet of a storm surge. That almost certainly will push water into some of the homes and businesses along atlantic avenue, which runs along north south here, just a block off the beach, and inland about a mile or so in the intercoastal waterway. A lot of real estate, expensive real estate, so folks hunkered down there might anticipate getting water into their homes if they h we know sandbagging has been going on for a couple days. A lot of lines for sandbags. Also, officials are telling folks. Just because the eye passes doesnt mean the storm is over. This is a pretty large system, so we do anticipate that there will be Hurricane Force and certainly Tropical Storm force winds that will blow around this area for hours after the eye has passed. Possibly into late into tonight and maybe even into saturday a lot of folks are not thinking about this, for good reason because its a long way up, but the first part of next week, this storm could possibly reloop around the ocean, right off florida. Reenergize and come back and hit some of these same communities that its hitting today. That would be cruel at a time where the folks are trying to clean up and get the power back on. Thats the latest here from Daytona Beach. Going to be a long friday. Back to you. Long and tough Holiday Weekend for many there. Beach. As Hurricane Matthew moves up floridas coast, jacksonville will be the last city affected ipflorida before Hurricane Matthew makes its way to coastal georgia. Gabe gutierrez is live in jacksonville for us. Is it the calm before the storm, are folks bracing themselves . Hi, there. Good morning. Well, the storm did arrive about an hour or two ago. We have been getting these rain bands intermittently. Were in between them. We have seen torrential rain for a few minutes and then it stops and begins again. Thats something obviously the other part of the coast has seen. Jacksonville expected to get hit hard today. Expecting 70 to 80mileperhour winds by the afternoon. The good news is, of course, as you have been reporting, now that the storm is tracking just a bit further to the east, a few more miles to the east, not expecting as much wind damage here in the jacksonville area, but still a very, very dangerous storm because of that potentially surge. Doubledigit storm surge is expected here in the jacksonville area. Jacksonvilles mayor has ordered the evacuation of 450,000 people. Here in this area, even though florida has seen many hurricanes before, this area has not been impacted by this type of storm since 1898. Theres a lot of concern behind me, the st. Johns river. Were expecting to see the storm surge kick up by the early afternoon. Jacksonville, thank you. I want to bring in Bonnie Schneider. The storm is tracking away, but the storm surge is a huge issue. It is a category 3 storm, and that storm surge, 4 to 6 feet from west palm to ft. Pierce. Once you head further north, were looking at a much more dangerous situation for melbourne to savannah, the sorm surge could go up to 11 feet, particularly along coastal georgia, parts of coastal south the carolina coast, even to the outer banks area, still looking at storm surge. Lighter amounts, but this area right through here, myrtle beach, through charleston, looking at substantial rain. Keep in mind, some of the rainfall amounts were anticipating could be as high as 15 inches. Thats over a foot of rain right in this area. Its going to be a really tough upper 80s, and some in the 90s in and around the desert. So well be watching for the storm surge and the heavy rain in coastal South Carolina, georgia, and florida. Thanks for that update. Just ahead, well hear from mike seidel in ft. Pierce, florida, and an of etdette continues. Im here in bristol, virginia. And now. Im in bristol, tennessee.
