Some were safe. A lot of people chose not to heed that warning and decided to board up their homes and hunker down. Our dave munsey tracking Hurricane Matthew still a very strong storm tonight, right dave . Very powerful storm, it is a category 3, but just barely. It is at 130 miles an hour. 131 makes it a category 4. Its a little bit east and a little bit north of miami, and it is drifting in the direction of florida. In fact, areas that we may see this thing find itself making land. Here we are at 130 miles an hour. Its moving northwest at 13 miles an hour and for a wet storm, thats not real good. Take a look at this. This is interesting. It is like the ferris wheel effect. Here you are. You have friday morning, friday evening, saturday morning, sunday morning or sunday evening, and heres monday evening. Look at this thing. Look at what this thing is doing. Heres miami right down here. Its coming back. Its going to take another shot at it. We are going to keep our eye on that. Not all of the models have it going into miami. Some of them have it going a little bit south of there. We mutt the map into motion, heres fort pierce, theres the eye right there, theres melbourne right there. So thats where we think the eye is going to come on, right around fort pierce. Take a look at charleston. That is a city that flo very easily. And watch what happens to it. It kind of disperses and throws the moisture out as it makes that little curve. Well have more on this hurricane and more on whats going on around the country, coming up. Aaron mesmer joining us now from juno beach florida. I cannot get over how the trees are blowing behind you. Is it getting worse by the minute . I would think actually worse by the second. When we got out here this the wind was starting to whip up, the rain was starting to whip around, and the sand down at the beach, it was blowing so hard it just stung your face. Aaron, i have got to ask you, people watch this kind of coverage, somebody standing in a hurricane, every time we cover a hurricane, and they think its really crazy. Where do they go when it gets really bad . Do you have a place to step out and be safe if things get too dangerous . I think you can see where we are right now, he is underneath an overhang at a cvs drugstore. So we have kind of hunkered down over here. Thats why i am able to stand where i am and only get moderately wet and the wind only blows me around every now and then. But if i step out tlshgs a gust at times so strong that you have aaron mesmer joining us from juno beach. Thank you. Some of the most compelling video of Hurricane Matthew is coming from folks in florida who are Live Streaming via facebook. You can see, very active down here as they are streaming this live. But all of these blue dots on the map are live streams from facebook users, and then earlier tonight, these were all of the streams coming out of florida. You could see this, and we found a lot of people who were choosing not to evacuate. But apparently today, back in it. Not even raining a little bit right now. I guess it rained and right now its really not raining out oh, look, we are at our exit. Lets see whats going on. Ghostbusters over here. Its coming out of the north. So as i walk back north, im walking straight into it. Lean forward into it. If we have like a giant funnel cloud coming over the top of those buildings, you know what i mean, ill be here and ill be taking those photos. We have got some good gusts right now. We lost a light. One more time. There you go. Slow motion for you. Slow motion for me. Thats right. Anyway, victor out. Many of us in arizona, we have never experienced a hurricane before, but for a group of phoenix bound passengers they came pretty close to getting stuck in florida. They caught one of the last flights out of orlando before that airport closed. And this image shows you right now the path of that plane, you can see the hurricane right over florida, bearing down on florida, as the plane took off. Danielle miller is live with the story. Danielle . Reporter kari, a lot of we did speak with them a little bit earlier. They were on some of the last flights out of orlando. They are telling us that they are just extremely happy to be back here in the valley and out of matthews way. Everyone was texting me, calling me, my friends, my coworkers, just to see if i was, you know, going to get home safe. Flight cancellations soaring as Hurricane Matthew churns towards the coastline, some phoenix residents happy to be back home tonight from orlando. These lucky passengers got some you watch the news there, it sounds like the end of the world. I was panicking that i was not going to get out. Cancellations stretch out as far as sunday. Courtney says when she got to the airport today it was closing. All of the hotels were sold out, so i didnt know where i would stay if i had to stay. And as many of you people know that with this many cancel layings there could be a Ripple Effect within the next couple of it might be start to give it a check before heading out to the airport. Reporting live, danielle miller, fox 10 news. Thanks, danielle. Several high school and College Football games have been affected by this storm. Many have been cancelled, including the game between l. S. U. And florida, but officials at the university of miami say this weekends tilt between the hurricanes and the florida seminoles will go on as planned, as the miami versus titans game is a go. The struggling Arizona Cardinals hit the road with a must win game in San Francisco tonight. Jude lacava joins us live tonight with a look at the highlights. They needed this game tonight, as close to a must win as you can have. You can hear a collective sigh of relief throughout the southeast for cardinals fans. You dont want to go out 14. In santa clara, a guy thats had success as a backup quarterback, going after chip kellys fast playing offense. What i liked about this game, every phase of the cards game, a, a plus, across the board. Now, San Francisco started early with this touchdown reception by jeremy curly, but, again, it was the pressure on this quarterback that mattered. Chandler jones, the deflection, and interception. The pressure on gabbert, sacked him seven times tonight, that was another momentum turner. They needed it, got it. And finally, who else, touchdown by Larry Fitzgerald, six catches, 81 yards, couple of tds tonight. And chris davis, returning this kick, and momah finally activated this week, the tight ball, and then falling on the football. That was a big play from special teams. How about that. And then David Johnson, look at the power run game for arizona. Well talk more about d. J. s big night. 27 carries, 157 yards, stanton dropping back again, going deep, back to Larry Fitzgerald and a nice touchdown catch here. They are up 217. David johnson though was a big part of this story line. He was fabulous tonight. Fitz delivering the passing game. This defense was fabulous. Gabbert, the deep out, Defense Forces a turnover, plenty of of turnovers from the defense across the board tonight. Back to David Johnson, power running right up the gut. They pick up a safety late and go on to win 3321. Obviously, its what we needed. We had to run the football offensively and protect it. I thought we did a very, very good job of that. Disappointed in our third downs. I thought we had some. I thought drew was playing a little fast early in the game. Hes so smart, knows where he is going, but he has got to let the play develop. I was a little pleased with the run game, especially the drive defensively, stopping the run, getting the turnovers in critical situations, obviously started the game with a great kickoff return. We didnt get any points out of it, so we damn sure didnt score in the First Quarter again. You can write write about that again, got something to write about. Other than that, im very happy. With our front four, we dont have to blitz. Oh, hes light years ahead because he understands what he is doing, hes doing better, has got better guys around him, and hes been a force since hes been here. Yeah, he needed one. He had a lot of help. He got cory peters drove the whole line back in for that safety, and he got to make the tackle. Did you talk to drew after that start, telling him to slow things down . Yeah, its hard to do. Its hard it to do when you havent played in and you know where you want to go with it. Guys were turning around and theres the ball. I didnt want him to play any slower, but i was very pleased with his effort. Touches for dave, i imagine the game plan going in not really, but i was hoping to get andre some, but he was hot, and it never really wore him out to where he tapped out once. Andre did a nice job getting a for us. I liked the 1two punch. That was such a big part of the game. Think about this, when they needed to eat up the clock, they had a 12play 76yard drive that led to a David Johnson touchdown to really ice the game for the cardinals. Well talk about more about David Johnson and go up to santa clara, Richard Saenz is live in the locker room, more from Larry Fitzgerald, and the big win tonight with the cardinals, of course, another win now, they get back to when we return with more in sports, more from bruce arians, a look at David Johnsons faulous night tonight, and more cards coverage. They win and move on to 23 in the season. Coming up after the break, a horrible ordeal for a Valley Family, their dog shot and killed in a burglary, police still working to try to solve this case. And tonight the family is sharing their story. Plus, highfiving, its what we do to celebrate success there you go, high five. Probably one of the most common sports gestures in the sports world, why the phoenix suns are counting how many high fives youre watching fox 10 news at 9 00 with john hook and kari lake. A Valley Family dealing with a terrible crime against them. Their home broken into, several items stolen, and worst of all, their pet dog shot and killed by the burglar. Tonight the family, their neighbors, they are talking about this horrific ordeal as police wk clues to solve the case. Stefania okolie is live in phoenix at the Police Department with the story. Stefania . Reporter yeah, john and kari, can you imagine that, coming home and finding your dog shot to death in your backyard. The burglar got into this familys home in the crest view neighborhood of north phoenix through a doggy door. Its something that many neighbors in the neighborhood have, but i can tell you tonight safety and the family who had their dog killed wants nothing more than to get this criminal off the street. Nearly two weeks after sharon and perrys 7yearold boxer, phoebe, was shot by a burglar. They still struggle to come to grips with the fact that she has gone. We feel it every day when we come home. Its just an empty feeling. An empty feeling that may never be filled, especially while the criminal is still on the streets. Police say the man used a credit card stolen from the home during the robbery. What if our son had been at home alone with the dog . Would he have shot our son . It happened at the crerest vw neighborhood in north phoenix, a neighborhood where the sound of dogs barking is nothing new. Neither is the sight of them. Whats new this week, a burglary that ended deadly has everyone shaken up. I have been here 16 years and never have had any problems in 13yearold son got home that sunday evening, they noticed their house was ransacked. He and his son started calling for phoebe. No response. Thats when his son found her shot dead in the backyard. He was mortified. He instantly broke down and cried when he saw her. There was i couldnt protect him from that. And it was it was devastate. The family now desperate for justice, and hoping this clue will help police track down a burglar and a killer. Give us any solace is to catch this guy, get him off the streets. I am sure he is robbing other people. Who knows if he is going to take someone elses pets life. Reporter yeah. Even worse, someone elses life, someone else actually inside of the home. Because like they said, if anyone could have been home, a bold criminal could have shot them as well. Take another look at the head to fox10phoenix. Com, and if you know anything, call 480witness. Stefania okolie, fox 10 news. He received two purple hearts, two tours in vietnam, and now his family is reaching out for help to fulfill his last wish, to be buried in Arlington National cemetery. His family says it doesnt cost arlington but they have to ship his body there. The total cost would be over 10,000. He was very selfless in everything that he did. He always wanted to help others, so when dad told us he wanted to be buried in arlington, it was a big surprise to us, because he never asked us for anything. If you want to help, we have a link for the familys gofundme still ahead a dire situation at animal shelters in maricopa county, why the shelters are overflowing right now with dogs. And its time for the state hard to believe that the phoenix suns are getting ready to start their season, but they are doing something a little different this year. Hopefully they will b this year. That would be nice. They are tracking the number of high fives that the players give one another throughout the season. Why you might ask . Well, there is a method to their madness. Marcy jones live at talking stick resort arena where the suns play to explain. Marcy, whats this all about . Reporter well, guys i have one question for you. Who doesnt love a good high five . They are fun, enthusiastic, and in fact, theres nothing as exciting as a really crisp one. Put a little heat on it yes, you really want to tingle after. Now scientists are saying that they can actually generate good plays. In sports its always been about hand eye coordination but now some head coaches, like earl watson of the phoenix suns, are paying attention to another type of contact, handhand or high fives. Sports says it makes perfect sense. The principal behind it is camaraderie between the players. I think he wants to develop a sense of enthusiasm between the team but also a sense of trust and safety. From basketball to volleyball, pros to peewee, positive reinforcement is key, especially in an age of social media where athlete bashing spreads like wildfire. People look at them and say, do, i just dont have the physical attributes. They are earning millions of dollars doing it, they should be better, im sporting the teams with going to the games and buying tshirts. Whereas, its an incredibly difficult thing to do, very few people in the world can do it. Teams who made more contact with each other were helping out more on defense, and playing as a more successful cohesive unit. The more you tell someone that they are doing a good job, the more likely they are to continuing doing it or do it more often. Not only are they getting positive reinforcement from teammates but their coaches as well. The study of players interactions is going to last through the entire season, and if the suns end up undefeated. I think we are all going to know why. Dont leave me hanging. Fox 10 news. I hope its as simple as a few high fives. Wouldnt that be great, and it fixes . And we go on to the championships. Starting now. Coming up next in the half hour, it could be a game changer in the entertainment industry, a new deal between netflix and a luxury movie chain, not back to our top story tonight. A back to our top story tonight. A potentially catastrophic hurricane hitting the eastern coast of florida tonight, and millions of people are in its path. Remember, this has already been deadly, nearly 380 people in haiti alone killed. These are live pictures tonight from Daytona Beach florida, and you can see the rain is coming down pretty hard, the palm trees, hard to see in this picture, they are swaying and is tipping and flipping around. This hurricane is expected to dump more than a foot of rain in parts of florida and bring a ninefoot storm surge. Holly bristow is not too far from daytona in Melbourne Florida tonight with a look at the Current Conditions there. Well, good evening, we are along the indian river in brevard county. We are in melbourne where the rain is now coming down sideways, really big gusts of toes. As the night goes on, the rain is coming down harder, but not quite unbearable at this point. The only thing that can blow at us right now is wind and water. If you take a look out here, youll see there are white caps blowing up. This is typically a pretty calm river thats great for water sports, everything from sailing to just general boating. I actually grew up wakeboarding and waterskiing on this river, and its calm than it is tonight, with literally white caps from one side to the other. If you jumped in on a boogy board, not safe to do, but you would get a heck of a ride in the water. At about 6 00 east coast time, we were over at the beach and it was so windy that police told us it would probably be a good time for us to come over to the mainland simply because the highprofile car like an suv, so we took it slowly over here from the beach and came over here to give you a good view of what some of the water looks like here along the inner coastal. Well be out here as long as we can manage it, but i would imagine by midnight well be heading further inland. Thanks, holly. Really at this point we wont know the full extent until yb will be assessing the damage. We dont know how much damage matthew may cause in florida and other parts of the southeast. You can hope for the best. One thing we do know for sure, matthew has left a lot of devastation already, more than 280 people dead in haiti, and as you can see from the pictures, untos flattened by the storm. Obviously building codes much different in haiti than florida. Still recovering from that devastating earthquake in 2010. You can see here in the northern plains, pretty good storms here, a little bit of snow earlier in the day, but most certainly some rough weather. You can see this stuff moving to the east of wichita, and we go down in there, we go to parsons, kansas, where they had a tornado today, and over five inches of rain. Look at that storm system rolling through there right now. And of ur back
