thank you for joining us for a special edition of fox10 news at 6. you just watched the cardinals take on the san francisco 49's good evening. thank you for joining us. a special edition of fox 10 news at 6:00 after you watched the cardinals and the 49ers this afternoon. >> i wouldn't call it an exhilarating win, but we get the "w." let's head over to jude lacava to break down today's game. >> it was not a great win, but when you're chasing the seattle seahawks, you do whatever you have to do to get the win, and the cardinals did just that. a salute to service. a time to remember the late great pat tillman. he would have been 40 this past weekend. a salute to all the great service members. then time to play football. michael floyd finally looked like the michael floyd of old. great grab here, 35-yard gain. floyd delivered on some really big catches in this game. and then david johnson. i'll take this matchup any time against the linebacker, easy pickens. lined up in the slot. cardinals out to a 7-0 lead. jeremy curly trying to make plays for the niners on this return. keep your eye on the football. it pops out. gabe martin recovers. cardinals doing something on special teams. finally, a positive play resulting from a fumble on special teams. cardinals will take it any time they can. and then palmer just hands it off to david johnson. look at this power run right here. this time he lays out, hits the pylon, and arizona is up early in the second quarter with a 14-0 lead. questions on the replay. was he out? didn't matter? they went with the play on the field, and it's 14-0 arizona. watch him try to make a play, roll out, and go to jeremy curly, who's wide open. we'll talk about this play as we break it open in sports night with max starks. but curly giving this team problems. blown coverage here. then palmer to larry fitzgerald. fits playing with a lower leg injury, gets flipped here. went into the locker room at one time, came back, and made catch after catch after catch. play look at this throw. are you kidding me? gerald hodges with the int. this is late in that fourth quarter. arizona only up 20-13. niners on the move. third and two. it's colin kaepernick. running it into the end zone. the game is tied at 20. palmer and the cardinals still with time, under two minutes to go. second and ten. somehow he gets out of the grasp here and then throws it downfield. there's that great catch by michael floyd. with the football. man, that was a game changer. deep in your territory. you come up all smiles from michael floyd. third and eight. palmer rolling to his right. another nice throw to david johnson. johnson outstanding today. not big numbers, but big plays. and then chandler with a 34-yard attempt. it's good. they'll take the win, the cardinals will, 23-20 the final. cards move to 4-4-1, and they beat the here's head coach bruce arians. >> obviously, extremely happy with the win. it was a game where i thought we had it in hand and gave it back. and then weathered the storm and won it. had no questions cat would make the kick. there was never a doubt in my mind. never a doubt in my mind we take that two-minute drill, go down, and score. had we not turned it over, i don't think it would have been that close. we went right down the field and carson makes a great play, hits j.j. right in the chest, and he doesn't catch it with his chest insta ed of his hands, and it ends up as an interception. we didn't do a very good job of sudden change defensively after those turnovers and giving up touchdowns or giving up chunk plays. i like the resilience of our team. a team that was done would have folded. we're 1-0 for our second half, and they're hard to get in this league. we'll take them any way we can get them, and we look forward to going i didn't notice it, so i must have played pretty good. what the hell have we got to do to help him? so it must have been real good. >> was it encouraging to see all the plays in the first half? >> yeah, we felt like we could get him. we felt like we were going to have good matchups. i thought mike had a great ball game. he got his 100-yard game. last year he strung them out. i'm thinking he's going to >> first half of the season and struggli struggling. how vital was it to win this one? >> it's over if you don't win it at home. it really is. now it's where it needs to be. >> what kind of peace do you take from this game? >> i think resiliency is the big thing. just keep playing. special teams, i thought, were solid. we didn't run it, but we threw other than the sac fumble and a bounce off the chest -- i don't call those interceptions. those were just bad plays by us. i thought we played very efficiently, and 50% on third down. we were poor in the red zone because of the turnover, but i think defensively we started extremely fast. offensively, we didn't, but we go going and scored in the first quarter, thank god. game. >> if the term winning ugly fits a game like this, i would use it. i would have to say max starks, you played for bruce arians, it doesn't matter. there's a win, but there were some struggles here. let's start with the positive in david johnson and michael floyd. as i said, not big numbers, but big plays for the most part. and d.j., in particular, when it mattered most, he delivered, especially when it came to the red zone. >> david johnson hastr together the longest current streak, nine games of plus 100 yards from the line of scrimmage. it started early and often. david johnson, two touchdowns in this game. i thought it was a great job of carson running him out and finding him on the flat route, using the natural pick of the two twins receivers to get him open, running back. he came around, beats the edge. here's what he has. he has breakaway speed, and he breaks away from the rest of the the end zone, he's a guy that's going to leave it all out on the field. now we get to michael floyd. where has he been all season? i'm glad he's here now. great job running a nice seam route up the middle. catches that 35-yard catch. this is what we've been waiting for. this is what michael floyd does. he hauls it in. the rest of the day he has some great plays right here, running an option route, gets to the outside, outstretches, great catch. wexp game, and i'm glad it's coming in at week nine. he made some key catches when the cardinals needed him most. >> the run game, quite frankly, struggled, and there were back to back runs in the second half that i want you to diagnose for our viewers out here. this is something that plays out for the rest of the second half of this season. let's take a look. >> it does. it was bothersome to me. formation. you're lined up in 13 personnel. you have 2 yards, 2 1/2 yards to go, and you get stuffed running your bread and butter play up the middle. then you change the formation to the left side, trying to get one yard, and you don't get it as well. the 49ers are the worst team in run defense in the entire league. right there you see it, michael floyd coming down, misses the cut on antoine the play in the backfield. this is indicative of everything going on all season with the offensive line and the play. i know it was the auxiliary guy, having the "z" come in and your offensive motion, but the guy has to have the push in the middle that is not indicative of his block. he should be able to get behind the wall from center to two guards to tackles and move forward. that wave should get you at least nine feet. >> that's it. you need nine feet. that was an issue throughout the the run game was not where it should be against a horrible run defense. >> 193 yards on average they usually give up, and you didn't get david johnson to 100 yards. >> let's look at the possession of the football and turnovers. that was an issue again. i guess you could say frustration. the run game wasn't there. there were other points in this game. carson palmer trying to make some plays, gets strip sacked here, and coughs up the football. >> carson had he was asked to throw the ball 49 times today. in a perfect world, in a bruce arians offense, you want to throw 30 to 35 times. right here carson is trying to evade pressure and extend the play down the field. sxwr j. nelson, it was on his fingertips, should have had that one. eric reed, very opportunistic, looking the ball in to make the catch. j.j. should have had the here, i think it's him trying to force it late in the game. he saw brown running the deep crosser. gerald hodges drops into the line, into the spot he's supposed to, almost like a tampa two, and he picks off the pass from carson palmer. palmer looked him down the entire way. he should have looked him down and gone somewhere else, not try to force it between the three defers. >> a win is a win is a win. the cardinals will take it and try to keep pace. if seattle loses to new we'll see what happens here. coming up later on in this program, we'll send it out to university of phoenix stadium and check in with the quarterback carson palmer. max starks will join us later tonight at 10:30 on sports night. we'll continue our coverage. cards win 23-20. they move to a record of 4-4-1. stay with us. move coverage on today's game to come during this news cast. as a fan, you do not want to get stuck in traffic. you're driving home. all you have to to is look back on what a horrible game that was and how you should have won that game but you didn't win that game. >> you had to stay in your seats as long as possible for this one because you see the outcome. but it was probably a long, long commute for folks as a result of that. >> we were showing you the traffic from the adot cam in the genera phoenix stadium. lots of fans heading out to follow the game. >> and fox 10's marcy jones is at university of phoenix stadium. she's getting reaction from all the fans out there. marcy? >> that's right, guys. was it a blowout? absolutely not, but it was a win, and we will take it. lots of folks still pelling out of the nest right now. it was a beautiful night here. hopefully, they can head into next week with more confidence under their belt. they do have a couple of weeks unwavering in their support. pregame kicked off like clock work after the game. lots of people getting fueled up with bbq and some beverages before the cards took to the field. we asked fans what they thought was in store, and here's what they had to say. >> everything is all right. as aaron rodgers says, just relax. take it easy. we're going to get a little bit of something one game at a time. this today. next week minnesota. we get on a roll and take care of business. that's what this is all about. cardinal nation, go big red. >> go big red. next week we're in minnesota against the vikings. it's going to be a tough game. i think we can pull it out. no doubt big red is going to rise up and hopefully take home another win. >> thanks, marcy. up next, we're learning more about the driver accused of running a red light and hitting a family as they crossed the street. what we know tonight. it was a warm weekend. yet another few warm days. then much cooler temperatures. the 70s. finally. we'll talk about that in just a we're learning more tonight about the driver who police say was behind a deadly crash last night. we're learning more tonight about the driver who police say was behind a deadly crash last night. >> officers say the driver ran a red light and struck a mother and her two young girls as they tried to cross a chandler street last night. >> this happened at the intersection of ray and ponderosa roads. >> reporter: the man that police arrested was on a suspended license for a dui. the scene is bleak. all day and night people have been coming to this memorial and adding to it and putting up signs and dozens of flowers and letting them know they support their family and are praying for yesterday evening before 6:00, when the 35-year-old mother had left the park with her two kids, a 2 and 3-year-old, getting ready to cross the road on ray road, when police say 39-year-old william epperling came through the light and slammed into them. the mother did die at the hospital. her kids are still at phoenix children's hospital being treated. this woman meant so much to this community. this family is very special. she's the kind of woman that neighborhood with a batch of brownies. >> she was the kind of person that just was always she was always happy, always laughing, so good with the kids. our favorite times were, when it rained, when there was mud puddles, they were out playing. she was that kind of person. she was always taking the kids just know they're going through such a difficlt time right now. >> reporter: very, very tough time for the family and this community. coming up on fox news at 9:00, we'll hear from neighbors who sprang into action, came out here and tried to help the children and the mother. live in chandler, fox 10 news. we are going to see those cooler temperatures, but in the meantime, that tie records. i'll tell you exactly when we're going to see the hot, hot temperatures coming up. i'll call you back. is this my car?
