Theyre encouraging locals to shop at their local stores today. This is one of many cities participating. In San Francisco former mayor willie brown is kicking off an event there at 10 00 a. M. San jose and morgan hill are two other communities participating in Small Business saturday. Officials here in pleasanton say this day helps boost the local economy and grow a sense of community. I spoke to one resident a short time ago who tells me many of these businesses depend on your dollar. It means a lot. It means theyre going to have food on their tables and going to be able to get Christmas Gifts for everybody. I think most of the people that shop down here know everybody, know the owners, know the businesses. So its reporter and just walking through theres a lot to see and do. Walmart shoppers saw a lot of action on friday from the black friday deals inside the store to the antiwalmart protests outside the store. Five people were arrested at one rally in san leandro on friday. It was all part of a nationwide demonstration against low wages. Hundreds of people showed up to protest in san leandro, and some of those demonstrators explained why theyre upset with walmart. Well, ive actually been here awhile but me and my coworkers are struggling just to make it, where they cant even really afford to some cant even hardly afford to get to work. The respect, because i work for walmart. I just want them to respect us a little more. That theyre treating their workers unfairly, theyre not paying them enough to be able to provide for themselves on a daily basis. Walmart is the largest private employer in america, and the government report finds that well mart has the highest number of employees living on welfare. Walmarts ceo responded to those protesters defending the retail giant and the wages that the company pays. We pay in the top half of retail. Into our east bay upper 60s in antioch, 69 the high for those of you in castro valley. Low 50s at the coast. A mix of 60s and 70s in the north bay.
