When the new eastern span of the bay bridge opens up after labor day. Drivers will have a completely different experience the old span. Tells us what commuters can expect the most obvious feature is that the new bridge has side by side east and west bound lanes. No more upper and lower deck, at least to the east of yerba buena island. The new bridge is also curved and arcs slightly, unobstructed views of San Francisco bay. There will be five traffic lanes in each direction, thats the same number as on the old bridge but now there will also be 10 foot wide shoulders on each side. Thats good news for drivers because if a vehicle breaks down , it can pull over and traffic can keep moving. The new bridge will also feature a 15 and a half foot wide pedestrian walkway and bikepath along the southside of the eastbound lanes. The walkway will eventually run from oakland to yerba buena island, but will only partially open in september. The old bridge needs to be removed before the walkway can be linked to the island. The new span will also feature an entirely new lighting scheme. There will be 48 thousand led lights mounted on more than 1500 fixtures. The lights will provide even lighting across the roadway and are designed to be almost invisible to oncoming traffic. There will also be new lighting inside the tunnel on yerba buena island. Continuing our coverage on bridge. William ibbs is a Civil Engineering professor at u c berkeley. He is concerned about taking down the existing span. Once we opened a new bridge caltrans attention will be largely focused on the new bridge and make this will be cut back on the old span bridge appeared that presents problems that we will have to deal with and if we delay the demolition of the existing bridge and cut back on maintenance on it than the risk increase for things to happen on the old bit bridge. If something happens to be old span that it caused a lot of safety issues and issues of transportation and safety it made sense is not kept up on the old bridge. David marshall, medical director of Sports Medicine at childrens healthcare of atlanta. Were starting to see more and more back pain complaints in the doctors and the Sports Medicine offices and the question is. Is there a correlation between back packs and back pain . Marshall is demonstrating how he advises his own daughter to properly wear hers. The way she has it adjusted out its way low. The weight of the backpack should never be lower than the waist line so the straps should be adjusted so that the backpack fits high up on her shoulders. The shoulder straps need to be two of them not just one and also they need to be wide and padded. He recommends the use of an abdominal strap. That will also help redistribute the load evenly across childs back without having the effect of 10 pounds pulling back on their shoulders then. Experts recommend these bags not weigh more than about ten to fifteen percent of the students body weight also so that the child does not fall or bump into another student. If thats not feasible, you may want to purchase a rolling backpack. For todays health minute, im carl azuz. To school station. Mobile app and check the back to school section.
