Putting news first. Pam moore. Steve aveson. Brittney shipp. And gary radnich. The kron4 news at 10 every night. vicki this winter many pg e customers noticed their power bills were higher than normal. Sometimes hundreds of dollars more each month. pam the large bills. The result of people using more power to keep warm. But also, changes that pg and e made to what it charges for energy. Today, kron 4s Charles Clifford spoke with state senator jerry hill. He has introduced a bill. That could bring some relief to customers. During the summer, my electric and gas bill hovers around 100 dollars a month but this past december i received a bill for 416 dollars. Now, my power bill always goes up during the winter but never by this much and apparently im not alone. State senator jerry hill of San Mateo County says that over the past few months his office has been flooded with calls and email from people saying that their power bills have risen dramatically. Hills office looked into it and found several reasons for the increases. Sotone is that the price of gas has gone up, it was a colder winter and what we found is that people have jumped into the second teir of gas consumption quicker than they should have. What hes referring to there, are rate changes that pg and e has been phasing in over the past several years. This is a little hard to explain, but basically, p g and e has reduced the number of power consumption tiers from 4 in 2015 to 2 starting in 2017. Customers are now jumping from the cheaper tier one to the more expensive tier 2 faster than they did in years past. Part of the reason is that the new tiers are based on the average power usage of customers over several months. In an attempt to give customers some relief, senator hill has introduced legislation that would do several things. First, it would require pg e to base the tiers on a month by month basis rather than a seasonal average. Sotsecond, with every monthly power bill hill wants pg and e to include an estimate of what they next months power bill will be so customers wont be caught off guard. Sothill also says that the proposal wont hurt pg es bottom line. Sotthis is really just going to benefit the consumer and make it fair for everyone at the end of the day. Now, senators hill legislation was introduced into the state senate just last week. We reached out to pg e for comment today. They say that they are currently reviewing the proposed legislation.
