>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> now at 6, we continue to follow that breaking news. house speaker nancy pelosi's has been. paul pelosi underwent surgery to repair a fractured skull today after that violent attack that happened early this morning at the couple's home in pacific heights in san francisco, francisco police chief bill scott just provided an update on the investigation a few minutes ago. thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 6. i'm ken wayne and i'm vicki liviakis. the house speaker has returned to san francisco to be with her husband. 82 year-old paul pelosi expected to make a full recovery police say that when they arrived at the scene, they found the suspect. 42 year-old david to pay and pelosi fighting over a hammer. now the is in custody. kron four's dan kerman has been following the story all day long is live for us at the scene in pacific heights with the latest on the investigation, dan? that's right. if the chiefs news conference, he made it clear that when police entered. >> both paul pelosi and the suspect were grappling over the hammer. they told him to drop it. pelosi apparently let go. and that is when the suspect hit pelosi with the hammer. he suffered skull fracture, as you know, also injuries to arm and to his hands. but he is expected to make a full recovery. the chief also made it clear today during this last minute news conference which just wrapped up about 5 minutes ago that this was not a random attack. he could not say what the motive is. it is a belief that we know what the motive is. and it is a belief that the police to 2, but he said at this point he can't release that. but he said this is definitely not a random attack. here's what the chief had to say. >> this was not a random at. this was intentional. and it's wrong. our elected officials are here to do the business of their cities. they're counties there states and this nation. if families don't sign up for this to be harmed. and it is wrong. and everybody should be discussed. about what happened this morning. >> that's police chief bill scott just moments ago, choking up talking about this incident. now the associated press is quoted sources as saying, but the actual target was not paul pelosi, but nancy pelosi, in fact, sources are telling the associated press that the suspect came in saying where is nancy? where is nancy the chief at this news conference also confirmed that the suspect forced his way into this residence that you see behind me. >> through a rear door of the home. now the question is, how could this pelosi is 2 away from being president, the vice president before her and then heard the speaker of the house. what's the situation with security? well, the police chief said that it is the capitol police that are responsible for protecting pelosi and her family and all questions about security have to be directed to the capitol police. so still plenty of questions about how this could happen. but as we mentioned, pelosi, the speaker was not at home at the time. she is now back in san francisco. her husband expected to make a full recovery after suffering a skull fracture after being hit, at least once with a hammer. the suspect will be charged with attempted murder. he is still hospitalized at this point. reporting live in pacific heights. dan kerman kron. 4 news. dan, i'm wondering since you've been there for a give us a sense first of all, do you know how long police and the fbi and everybody else is going to be on the scene? >> and secondly, just kind of the mood in that neighborhood is generally very quiet neighborhood. that's right. what we can tell you that there are a couple of police cars here in a few officers here. but the major >> mill you of police officers and the fbi. they rolled and rolled out of here is somewhere around 4, 15, 4.30, this afternoon. so just a few police officers on scene right now, terms of the neighbors. so they're very much shocked by this whole thing. many of them know paul pelosi, their fans of paul pelosi, their friends of paul pelosi. they think this is terrible. what has happened to them? they're their surprise. such a violent attack could occur. they've seen protests out here before they've seen the graffiti incident out here before. but nothing like and they are also questioning what the situation is with the security. lots of questions about that. we know pelosi was not here at the time, but does that mean that because she is not here. capitol police don't provide any security for her family, specifically her 82 year-old husband, paul. well, we don't have the answer to that question. police chief bill scott said that they are here the capitol police, but it is up to the capitol police to provide security and all questions again about that. have to go to the capitol police. we have not gotten the answers at this point. can't. all right, dan, thank you for that. you have a family of the policies bought that house back in the 80's? i believe so. certainly even if they didn't have the name pelosi be well known in that neighborhood being there so long. here's what the governor had to say. he issued this statement about the attack saying, quote, this heinous assault is yet another example of the dangerous consequences of the divisive and hateful rhetoric that is putting lives at risk and undermining our very democracy and democratic institutions, those who are using their platforms to incite violence must be held to account. our leaders should never fear for their safety and the safety of their families and serving the people they were elected to represent, not in their homes, not at the u.s. capitol, not anywhere. jennifer and i wish paul a speedy recovery and center thaws to speaker pelosi and their family during this time. san francisco mayor london breed also issuing a statement saying, quote, >> this was a horrific and scary incident have reached out to speaker pelosi to offer my support to her and her family. and i want to thank a san francisco police department and the san francisco fire department for their quick response to this incident. >> bay area politicians are reacting to that attack it to pelosi home. they tell kron 4 says it. but you that acts of violence against public officials are on the rise. >> this is really terrible. it's dangerous do this with many ways but threat to our democracy. what happened? >> pelosi home with the hammer and this this this guy, the protests that is an on democracy to bay area politicians. u.s. congressman john garamendi and california state senator scott wiener speak to what they see as the broader implications of speaker nancy pelosi's husband being attacked in their home than 24 hours after police have made to arrest connected to the fatal shooting of an east bay dentist. one of the man is now dead. 73 year-old nelson chia, who was arrested and escorted away in handcuffs by oakland officers late last night. kron 4 has learned that he has died. we receive that information just a short time ago. tia was arrested for the death of lillie shoe zoo shot and killed back in august when she and her partner were in oakland's chinatown. kron four's theresa in the newsroom. she's been following the latest on the incident. and theresa, what you have for us? well, this was a very big development in the story today. we're learning that nelson chia killed himself while in custody at an alameda county jail. specifically. he hung himself. >> as for the case, oakland's police chief calling this a murder for hire. here's what we know about the grim details right now. now, late last come police arrested nelson chant at the oakland police department and booked him into custody. the chief revealed detectives suspected this was not a random act of violence after the fatal shooting of lily shu. now the shooting occurred in broad daylight on sunday august, 21st on 5th avenue in oakland. she was pulling up in her car when a vehicle pulled up alongside her. this was all captured on video. a suspect then approached the passenger side of the car, opened fire, killing shoe. it was reported that she would tempted to struggle to keep her belongings, leading community activists to say that they believe that she was murdered in a robbery attempt. however, authorities revealed today they believe that plotted with the help of another man. 33 year-old has seen by basin of stockton and they added that this was a twisted plot for financial gain. >> drive esta shun. we uncovered substantial evidence supporting the arrest of 73 year-old nelson chia of oakland for the orchestration of what appears to be a murder for hire. and 33 year-old has basin, a stockton for his right now. i also reached out to completes department to see if they hadn't a comment to regards to their investigation, but they had no comment. they did say that there could be more arrests in this investigation of 33 year-old tyrell wilson, explains why her office decided against filing criminal charges against a former danville police officer accused of killing wilson kron four's. philippe djegal explains. >> the day before speaking publicly during a news conference friday contra costa county district attorney diana becton says she reached out to 33 year-old tyrone wilson's family. she told them directly former county sheriff's deputy and denville police officer andrew hall will not face criminal charges in wilson's case. of course, they're disappointed in the decision. but becton baby brandon in san jose. that's because one of the suspects in the case use tanya guadalupe ramirez reportedly made 300 phone calls in jail after she pleaded no contest to the charges back in august. what was said in those phone calls stopped made public just yet. for now, ramirez faces up to 14 years in prison for the kidnapping of that. then 3 month-old baby brandon in san jose. her secret lover jose par t o faces up to 5 years in prison for his role in the scheme. prosecutors and the suspects. attorneys will review those phone calls over the next few weeks. >> actually, it's something with
