oak fire burning in yosemite national park is now 94% contained has burned more than 19,000 acres in mariposa county. there are closures near the area in the sierra national forest. fire crews patrolling the area say they have seen minimal activity today. the main goal right now is to mop up all the heavy fuels and the mckinney fire in siskiyou county has now burned more than 60,000 acres. it's 40% contained. it has destroyed 87 homes. so far we do get a chance to speak with one fire victim who is trying to get enough resources to build back a place to call home sac botelho has their story. >> after a wildfire ravages a community, you either move on or rebuild. you know, there's not really much to go back to, but i that still the place where i want to be who was riccardi, his wife, his dog tango and their 3 cats lived along the klamath river. >> and they were working to restore an old golf course off of walker road. >> we were going to have somebody come out and do the the sot on the side of the turf and a couple of the next month. but the mckinney fire burned down their home. >> and took their livelihood. people you know, it's it's just stuff. but i mean, it's you know, for some of us to make this a slide. yeah, it's it's your entire life committed to keeping his house safe. lewis state as long as he possibly could. it was 38 minutes from the time that first tree lit and i i literally like i wanted to stay. you know, i just i i was afraid to die, honestly. i mean, like it. the fire was still 102 yards away and it was like so hot. reads, you know, that was like a it was dark. there was ash coming down. i sent my weiss out with my truck in my trailer and i. i rode one of our 4 wheelers out and it didn't have headlights, you know, so it was dark you know, it was it was pretty scary. >> one thing kept him going to get out and get to safety. >> my wife, you know. >> if not for her than i think i surely would have stayed. his home was one of the 87 residences destroyed and 132 total structures destroyed by the mckinney fire. now the rebuilding efforts begin. it's it's going to take time, but one thing i really love about this community is like a really >> hard working. you know, really good good people. >> working to help rebuild the community. they will once again call home. >> talk about our local weather forecast right now as we take this live look outside here at san francisco's quite tower. blue skies, no fog of miss shot and we're not dealing with any extreme heat. but as we talk about our forecast, we're going to be joined right now by our new meteorologist kyler grogan. she's here with details about. but they're also experiencing as they're trying to fight these fires in siskiyou county. yeah, that's right. just cnn and you look at a couple things, right? look at temperatures. you look at wind and you look at whether that the money. >> dry lightning, the team coming their way. and that's what they've been dealing with. unfortunately, some of the storms rolled through there. but you can see right now to take a look at reading, probably the closest number on the map show you right now, 90 degrees. so there's certainly some heat up there and that is not helpful for them. big difference as you look at san francisco right now, it's 59 in, of course, an la about 87 at this hour. and a lot of that has to do with the fact that we've got high pressure in the desert southwest that drag some of that moisture in it kicks off some of the storms that unfortunately make it a little difficult for firefighters. the low pressure off the coast is what's helping to keep us a little mild right now. so that's keeping things rather, you know, relatively cool. we're not seeing any high numbers in our inland communities right now. it's our weather headlines. we have this beautiful day today. just a few clouds out there. if you're out of the coast, a little breezy onshore wind returning as we get into the afternoon and then mid week, we're going to watch for a little bit of a warm-up. let's take a look at the high temperatures today. comfortable 60's as we look at the marina district about 68, 59 at metairie can see little cool the coast because that fog kind of hung on around the bay. we'll see 60's and 70's palo alto. but 74 and as we look a little further south, 80 in campbell heading right into the east bay, some nice 70's inland. we'll see some of those 80's up there. and some of those will certainly be visible in the north bay to nap about 78 today and again, santa rosa about 83. so the fog cleared out. we will see return as we get into tonight and then tomorrow we'll have another pretty nice day on tap. and then just a quick look here. want to give you have your 7 day forecast just to show you that things are going to get a little bit warmer as we head into the wednesday thursday, friday time zone there. you can see those numbers starting to roll up. we'll be back in a little bit with more back to justine. thank you so much. a program in contra costa county that's supposed to give kids a head start is falling behind. kron four's will tran is in fremont with the details. >> they're great is not an a or b. it just basically says you need improvement if they had to tell the parents of contra costa county, your child needs some work. here's the reason why. actually, they looked at the program back in eebruary and they are ready to present the report to the board of supervisors tomorrow. lots of things that need improvement has star is very important to a lot of families, a lot of kids because it begins from birth to 5 years old, especially low-income families who predominantly use the head start program as far as what they found out. they said that well in contra costa county that they can do a lot better when it comes to the kids safety either physically always be around. the kids are some system in place to make sure that the kids are safe. that's very important to all parents. then they're also need a system in place so they can evaluate themselves whether in certain areas they do well in other areas that they need improvements. so that system needs to be enhanced. also fiscal responsibility. what are they doing now and to make sure that is fiscally responsible moving forward into the future. the board of supervisors once they get the report, they have 120 days to acknowledge it and to make improvements. this is very important, of course, because here at kron we are doing back-to-school theme and this is school before i put that in a different way. back to you. >> still ahead, the parents of gabby petito are falling a suit over their daughter's death are now trying to take the court for 50 million dollars. and we have some video of some quick work for around schools and mosques, very terrified and very devastated because in their minds, they any one of them could be the next victim. all 4 men who were killed have been muslim and of south asian descent as whether these are hate crimes. a police spokesperson says, hey. >> it is. i think and by motive and we don't know the motive at this point. the most recent homicide happened on friday night 50 million dollars in damages. police have not commented on the suit. petito's body was found. in september of 2021. laundry later then took his own life. we'll talk about our forecast right now as we take this live look outside as we check out what's happening in the east bay this afternoon. this is our camera showing us walnut creek. and right now is our meteorologist kyle grow. graham here with details on what can in the east bay and all across the bay area on this monday. yeah, they're just see. we've got a lot of sunshine out there, right? and it has everything to do with the fact that are kind of balance between these 2 pressure system. so >> you have the high pressure in the desert southwest that if it strengthens makes things warmer for us inland. but we have low pressure kind of balancing it off, hanging out here off the coast and it's not close enough that it's bringing, you know, too much fog our way. but it is starting to do this dance where we start to see the high pressure that has clockwise circulation drag some of this moisture in and that low pressure is not really keeping it from getting to the sierra, which is what's happening right now. and this can get a little dangerous because storms have lightning associated with them. as you can see. and of course, we get some flash flooding there going on, especially in areas where there are burn scar. so that's something the national weather service definitely be keeping an eye on as we go forward throughout the day today. but it's much quieter here in the bay. we do have a lot of sunshine out there. temperatures right now. pretty nice. we've got 74 down in morgan hill. you can see about 69 in alameda. 68 there in tehran about about 79 78 in concord says kind of a mile. but nice day. you want a tease. you have to go all the way up here right now to cloverdale to find and temperatures today going to be pretty mild to take a look at 68 degrees in san francisco. and you can see as we get into oakland about 72 today, 78 in san jose heading to the oakland a's game tonight. well, looks pretty good weather for their be taking on the angels. about 06:40pm. you can see we've got some sunshine there, breezy conditions about 10 to 15 miles per hour. so i would definitely take a jacket if you're going to be heading out, but not a bad looking night for baseball. and just seen you mention we've got kids going back to school and that had me thinking about my favorite back-to-school out, but was winnie the pooh head to toe? haven't you? like you were a winnie the pooh costume? no, i had a winnie the pooh themed socks. my dad did the shopping that your shoes and address it was all brown and yellow glory just the whole way. i was so excited to go back to school witt that. i i love that fit than i am. >> have to think of what my kids are going where the first day school so to do. there are a lot of college students that are taking classes in person this year. that mean rents are going way up since so many landlords pause, rent collection through the pandemic. california student housing system is now under serious pressure. reporter senator mitchell explains why. it's kind of really hard right now because we're to students for 3 months. college student marisol wrangle has been searching for an affordable apartment. >> now it could get even more challenging. it's going to be really difficult. i don't think we're going to able to afford that. california landlords have the ability to raise rents by up to 10%. >> because inflation is so high, landlords will be able to get around a state law that had limited rent increases having to pay additional 10%. >> for your rent would be a significant and that's the kind of thing that could end up, you know, ultimately pushing people out of the homes. are they dylan is the housing affordability reporter for the la times. >> he says rent increases have been on hold for years because of the pandemic and landlords have been struggling to pay their bills having the ability to raise rents is something that they see maybe a long time coming number one. and then number 2, when it comes to inflation and their own rising costs and their own mortgages in the road and tax payments and fees for the city and things like that. >> you know, they want to have the ability to day i think recruit their cause. a lot of people already suffering last year in a ucl. a usc survey showed almost half of all la county renters. >> could not pay their full rent if you already can't pay the rent. alina, pop of the nonprofit defense network says this could push even more people. >> into homelessness. now you've got to pay more or rented a cruise. >> people who are on the borderline, they're just eking it out. that was sandra mitchell reporting for us. now the u.s. dollar is up more than 10%. >> near its highest level in 2 decades. while that's great news for american tourists who are traveling overseas, it is causing debt problems for emerging economies. the international monetary fund estimates that 60% of low-income countries are currently at high risk of debt default. the federal reserve's aggressive campaign to hike interest rates is only likely to make the dollar stronger and some economists are still worried about the possibility of a recession here in the united states and whether that could then lead to a global recession. back now here in the bay area. and there was a huge street festival that returned to the east bay as hundreds of vendors took over downtown fremont for the festival of arts kron four's camila barco takes us there. >> organizers say this is the largest free street festival west of the mississippi and on sunday fremont festival of the arts returned for the first time in 2 food and activities and makes 3 months festival of the arts special. there's a lot of offering here. you know, if you want different types of food, they have all the food. they have all the arts and crafts out here. >> a lot of vendors and i think it's just a great place to be back in the event attracts thousands of people every year, according to the festival's website, more than 13,000 glasses of wine or enjoy during the two-day event. >> 3,000 volunteers are needed to running and they've raised more than 11 million dollars in the festivals. 37 year, history that supports nonprofits, their local nonprofit. so >> it's something we can offer to the community to gather to have fun. and yet it also supports the community in ways that is really critical. the streets of downtown fremont will reopen to traffic on monday. i'm in 9th in fremont camila barco kron. 4 news. next up. >> toys r us coming back in a big way where you can find a newly opened location right here in the bay area. and some top pups got to show off their surfing skills this weekend. so who is the best that? i think it's their right hand and 20 is that because they got for pa's on there and hanging 10 there hanging enjoy maybe one last time that koegel creamery. we came up here and visited the cowgirl creamery and it up here. so we want just come up before they close. the announcement was posted on social media this month. a statement from cowgirl creamery reads in part, quote. >> the decision to close our point reyes station location was incredibly difficult to make, but it was a necessary decision for the sake of the overall business. there are significant environmental constraints and logistical challenges with operating a retail shop in such a remote location. the point raise shop is where it all started known for crafting its own artists and she's using organic milk from local cows. just last year, cowgirl closed its ferry building shop in san francisco due to the pandemic. i was really excited when they kind of gone to very building as well. >> it's kind of a shame that they're going to be a closing down the retail stores hoping that, though, still to be found somewhere else and they will. the company noted cheesemaking will still go on and they're peddling the plant and customers will be able to purchase cheeses that retailers nationwide. but the bar and shop and cantina
