Jeff tensions were running high at the special session of the alameda city councilthe meeting was at capacity and the overflow crowd was upset because of the number of lanlords speaking to the council. Voices were raised. The police say a City Employee was assaulted and two people were taken into custodyright outside the chambersa hot button issue with a violent outcome. Rent and evictions were at the front of everyones thoughts. The tennants are saying things are out of control and landlords are raising rents left and rightcashing in on the current boom. The landlords are saying everything is more expensive these days and rents are still lower than in other parts of the bay area. The Alameda Renters Coalition says that the common rent increase has been about ten percent per year over the last few of years. Catherine pauling what we are seeing is a third year of ten percent and that means their rent has been raised 30 or more. Jeff landlords can get more for their rental property and many of them are cashing inbut, a lot of them say they are good to their tenants and only raise the rents to cover the upkeep of the property. Striking four people. Including a campus contractor. It happened this morning on the Central California campus of uc merced. Officials say, the suspect walked into the classroom with a large hunting knife. Kron 4s Justine Waldman spoke with students. Shocked by the incident. Justine sheriffs cars blocked the entrance to uc merced. At 8 this morning, in the Classroom Office buildingduring a physics class. A male student allegedly walked in holding an 8 10 inch hunting knife. Students describe hearing the ciaos. A contractor working in the building ran in because of all the commotion he is now being called a hero. the contractor went in thinking it was a student fight and saw the stabbing in progress and through his actions saved this one students life and he stabbed in the classroom. He was stabbed justine the sheriff also informed us the alleged assailant then fled down two flights of stairs and outside, where he stabbed a female student and a female staff member. shortly after that we saw ambulances and cop cars and we were like wooah. Justine then, according the authorities, two Campus Police officers saw the suspect outside and shot and killed him as he turned toward them. Pictures on twitter show us the police presence. The 4 victims are all expected to survive and talking with investigators now i am thinking that it is trag and we do seem to have a culture of violence in america tragic sometimes it catches with our young people justine the campus opened in 2005 this community is now saddened and stunned by this violence. Doctor Kjartan Armann says theres no reason to panic just yet. we dont know if they had any preexisting conditions phillipe but knowing that the victim died relatively young is a bit alarming. the patient is under the age of 65. We dont know if they had any preexisiting conditions such as diabetes, a smoker, heart disease, asthma those will all be things that could predispose this person having a bad outcome having had the flu. Since it is an isolated case, we cant speculate any more than its gonna be a bad flu strain or not, well have to wait and see what happens in the next few phillipe the state department of Public Health says that the flu levels around california and the entire United States right now are low. Says the peak flu season here in the county is usually february. i recommend that everyone get the quadravalent flu vaccine. I recommend you get it as soon as possible. Phillipe the number of local flu cases, armann says, will most likely start to rise next month and into december. He says last years flu vaccine was only about 19percent effective because the virus mutated. But that this years is better and that theres even a high dosage vaccine available, which the doctor recommends for patients 65 years of age or older. the older you are the more significant your response to the flu potentially.
