o'clock. i'm justine waltman. i'm jonathan mccall. lawyers for daniel luna. the oakland man attacked after the nfc championship game this week. >> now say that he is in a coma and his injuries remain critical. tonight, his lawyers tell kron four's amanda hari they know need help from other folks who are also at that game. >> has family lawyer says they're asking any witnesses of the incident that happened at so-fi stadium to come for work. they say that witnesses could have a different perspective on exactly what happened, that there's going to be a long road for daniel, the family of a man injured in the parking lot of so fi stadium during the nfc championship game. >> release an update on his condition saying, quote, our loved one. daniel luna remains in a coma in intensive care after the violent attack. we pray for him. has a long and challenging road ahead of him. >> and that's really where the focus is right now. the family's lawyer, jonathan davis says luna had a crane yak to me to relieve internal pressure on his brain. the inglewood mayor explained how luna was hurt. he says it began when luna wearing a white jersey push suspect brian, some 20 s wearing a yellow jersey. >> the individual, white jersey. pushes the individual yellow jersey and he falls over backward, didn't fall to the ground. the individual, the yellow jersey. pushes. the individual, white jersey and then strikes him once. it appears in the face area. the individual, the white jersey falls backwards, hits his head on the pavement when test was arrested and released on $30,000 bail. the mayor says they're going off of 90 seconds of blurry surveillance video. >> but davis and the family are hoping witnesses may know more as a mayor sees someth>ng 15, 20 minutes before. >> we don't know. as i said, we don't know the facts. davis says while the family's biggest focus is luna's recovery. >> they're also hoping to create change that will result in a safer stadium environment. these are highly charged environments. we know that security is he. the lawyer also tells me that the family is grateful for all the paramedics and doctors who have been working this case. >> they say they also want to thank the police officers and law enforcement agencies. >> they are working on this as well. and harry kron, 4 we'll switch it up now. talk about our 4 zone forecast and it looks like some fog has now rolled into the city of san francisco tonight. >> for meteorologists strom in tonight from a gruesome with a look at this fog and everything else is on the way for the start of your yeah, i definitely we are going to see a little bit of patchy fog in some spots. some low lying clouds as you get up tomorrow. >> especially along our valleys and out our coast. but it's not going to be very heavy. so that is the good news we're seeing a lot of clear conditions because we some high clouds earlier today. a lot of that has cleared out of the bay area. and yes, a little bit of patchy fog will be rolling through. can't really make out anything of the clear skies, though, in this shot. this our one shot overlooking a much of san francisco and the bay. and even along the east bay shoreline there across it, the bay bridge to the far right of your screen there. so it is just a gorgeous sight around the bay area. yes, mostly clear other than the little bit of fog that's going to creep through and some low lying clouds into early tomorrow morning. the temperatures dropping into those chilly 30's and 40's like what we've seen over the last couple of weeks. but then tomorrow, a big change in the weather because we're going to see a real warm up. a bump up in temperatures. lots of sunshine, mid to upper 60's. even getting close to that 70 degree. mark and some and neighborhoods next week. we are going to see a lot of 70's around the bay area. and in fact, it's going to feel more like spring as we get the work week, especially wrapping up into next weekend. as a matter of fact, it's going to be a long, dry stretch with no rain in the forecast any time soon. temperatures outside right now, 40's and 50's. 49 degrees in hayward. 49 in downtown san jose, half moon bay. you're currently at 43 degrees. 54 in berkeley right now, 50 degrees in pittsburgh. 46 in valais home. currently napa. 39 and avato at 43. but yes, those temperatures going to dip even more. so into the overnight hours. you probably saw some of the hazy conditions today as well as yesterday. air quality has been a mixture of good to moderate levels. we're going to see much of the same as we get into tomorrow because we're just seeing the air being recycled as this warm up continues get to temperatures. really nice. more like spring, like even summer. it's going to feel like and how long is this a dry stretch going to last and this warm up? i'll have all those answers coming up back to the news. parents and teachers in oakland are teaming up to keep this school district. >> from shutting down schools. that decision is going to be made this coming tuesday when the district. >> hold a vote. but as parents, students and teachers push to keep school doors open. oakland mayor libby schaff says the decision comes down to the district's unnecessary spending. >> i want to see more investment in students and not structures. the idea that money is being spent on building maintenance and potentially duplicative administrative structures. something that i think we all need to look into. >> kron 4 s camila barco has the story. >> teachers, parents and students continue to fight for the future of the schools in oakland. they argue that closing the buildings could impact the communities they serve is just not there. stephanie parent lives near prescott elementary school person has a 3rd grader. there. but next week, oakland school board members will decide whether prescott elementary along with up to 15 other schools, a close or merge over the next 2 years. these things really matter for our families, parent valley, with other parents, students and teachers saturday morning at prescott to prevent the shutdown from happening. >> they are all he says they feel attacked because the list of possible school closures up for debate. >> predominantly surf, black and brown communities and say i was altogether surprised because the district is regularly. >> attacking our small schools and particularly the schools that serve black and brown kids in oakland school district leaders claim a decline in enrollment and attendance. >> has led to a more than 12 million dollar deficit because funding is normally given to schools based on how many kids show up to class every day. they say the pandemic has impacted school attendance records. that is the same argument. they that they consistently used. but the administration is part of the problem. oakland city council member carol fines and other city leaders are asking for the state to help. >> the are requesting the district's debt erased and they want to change how attendance is calculated. so that >> schools are not penalize for children being out during covid. i think they're number things that can be done right now. the school board is set to vote on this issue on tuesday. >> even though a board member broke the news via social media about the potential closures less than 2 weeks ago had director mike not alerted the community. >> that these things were happening. no one would know to make a decision like this with no community input in 10 days is really appalling. pair excessive prescott closes its stores. it will be a burden for her and others. you know, adding an hour. >> to walk your child to a farther away. school is a devastating impact for many of our families. for now, she's fighting to keep prescott and the other schools open in oakland, camila barco kron. 4 news. >> and response to today's demonstration and the others that we have seen during the past week. oakland, vice mayor about rebecca kaplan tweeted out this statement. years ago the state took over control of usd and ran up debts. not fair to make students, families and community suffered by intersection is closed to traffic while officers investigate what exactly happened here? the san jose police department also put out that this is the 11th traffic fatality and the 12th victim of a tonight right now, pleasant hill. fire crews are on the scene of a fire at a home where one person was taken to the hospital. >> this is video of that scene just into the kron. 4 news room tonight. fire crews say the blaze contained to the garage of that home. the good news everyone was able to make it out safely. right now there's still no word on exactly what sparked this fire. we'll be following both of these stories for you throughout the evening and tomorrow morning here on kron, 4 news. >> the winter storm that caused hundreds of thousands of power outages and led to hundreds of traffic accidents all the way from texas to maine is now moved out to sea. but there's a big task ahead of cleaning up and repairing the areas they were hit the hardest. some people could be left in the dark all week. to the southwest snow and ice star beginning to melt. but emergency officials in central texas are warning people that the roads remain dangerous. officials are saying freezing temperatures are expected to hang around and people will need to take precautions. more than 80,000 customers in tennessee remain without power after ice topped hundreds of trees on to power lines will get the latest now from reporter jerrita patterson. she's in tennessee. >> it's how something so beautiful can be so destructive from cars to trees, even power lines all covered in ice. this is spring-like temperatures in the middle at the beginning of february. our meteorologists rebecca strom us here now with a look ahead towards a very >> warm week. >> yeah, guys, we're going to see anywhere from maybe an 8, even 10 or 12 degree difference of what we've been seeing on average over the last couple of weeks. that's a big bump up in temperatures we're going to try to enjoy that. we do need the rain. let's try to enjoy the sunshine while we have it. maybe make some plans to head outside over the next couple of days. our live cam right now showing us some mostly clear skies here in shot. this is bay bridge toll plaza approach into san francisco. and speaking of san francisco, here's a breakdown of the highs tomorrow afternoon. find your neighborhood. we're looking at a downtown at 65 the mission district. also 65, if you live in the sunset, it will be a high of 62 tomorrow along the coast. specific at 62 half moon bay might want to head over to of the beach there. 66 degrees with a lot of sunshine. 64 in millbrae 65 in burlingame. and then we're getting some upper 60's as we move further along the peninsula. 67 in palo alto mountain view year at 67 tomorrow. san carlos also upper 60's. your south bay's own near 70 degrees in some spots like downtown san jose in campbell cupertino, a high of 68 expected and then the livermore, 64 dublin and pleasanton both in the mid 60's tomorrow, the east bay shoreline, upper 60's and 64 near end concord. you'll be at a high of 65. near 70's here. also, especially in vacaville at 69 68 in fairfield wine country, upper 60's and the north bay. it's going to be beautiful, very sunny and upper 60's in petaluma and santa rosa mid 60's at the coast for point. raise its going to be gorgeous. and looking ahead like i was mentioning, it's going to get even warmer as the days progress. we're going to see a mostly upper 60's on tuesday. some 70's, though, on the board, especially if you're going to be in our inland president joe biden says that he wants construction workers to be able to build roads. >> bridges and other federal projects better faster and cheaper washington, dc correspondent jessi turnure reports now on the president's new executive order. >> good evening. president biden said this helps fulfill a promise he made when working to pass the bipartisan infrastructure law to create good union jobs. and you go. >> a maryland union hall cheered on president biden friday as he signed an executive order that aims to support construction workers and streamline federal projects. help ensure that we build a better america. we build it right and we build it on time. we build a cheaper than it would have been otherwise. the order requires project labor agreements between unions and contractors for any federal construction project. about 35 million dollars. this comes as the biden administration starts to roll out funds from the 1 trillion dollar infrastructure law. saving taxpayers money clearing construction zone quickly to ensure that everything the federal government signs the contract to build is built last. the white house estimates the order will impact up to 200,000 workers and about 200, 60 billion dollars in federal construction projects while also preventing disruptions on sites like strikes help defuse problems before they arise. administration officials joining the president at the union hall say the agreements are also about building a better workforce. by the time these union workers. >> finished their training. they are the best. >> in the business, vice president kamala harris stressed the country will have to lean on many new workers to build out the infrastructure law and labor secretary marty walsh said the executive order is a tool to attract more to the workforce. expand access to good middle-class korea's for women and workers of color. that means a more inclusive economy. and as of january, 30th, federal contractors must pay workers a $15 an hour. minimum wage. >> based on another executive order the president signed last april in washington. i'm jessi tenure. >> a new report from the labor department shows that there are millions of job openings available for skilled workers, but filling them could be a problem. the agency says that nearly 8 million jobs were lost in the job market during the pandemic. but only about half of them have been filled so far. >> through the pandemic, we saw an unprecedented level of boomers leave the labor market, walk out of the labor market. >> painter says that during the great resignation, some americans took early retirement or want to work from home. officials say that if at least 75% of the labor vacancies are not filled, consumers will continue to see costs rise for food, fuel. and other essentials. >> reports from the department of housing and urban development are showing that homelessness in the united states has exploded in recent years. democrats say the pandemic created concerns about living in shelters. the relief benefits included expanded unemployment benefits and the child tax credit payments that help people avoid homelessness. but they say those programs were temporary and the build back better package could provide more long-term solutions. if it is passed by congress. >> data shows that more than half of shelter people and 40% of been identified as 25 year-old one angel garcia of san francisco still behind bars for that shooting and death of a man on interstate 80 last night. he was arrested and taken into custody this morning. we'll also tonight learning more about the man who was killed, a longtime friend. >> how is talking about jeanne ransom? they're acknowledging that he was gunned down on the freeway kron. 4 subject. all shares more about the cal athletics hall of famer. >> todd walker, new gene ransom since the 2 were in elementary school and says it breaks his heart to learn through those closest to jean that his good friend and cal athletics hall of famer was the man shot to death on interstate 8.80 friday night. a man who's basketball stardom continued from berkeley high school to cal berkeley in the 70's. it that the freshman is 7 more years to have was at the door. >> you know, we felt like celebrities because we want the we walk being with the california highway patrol is leading the investigation. >> at 5.15, in the evening, the chp says a man crashed into a guardrail after being shot and killed on the freeway north of oak street in oakland. >> the chp has not released a motive. walker says there was no reason for anyone to target him who the work, the graveyard. >> you know, guess. but it was just was regular routine. but all the work. the alameda county coroner's office has yet to release the man's name. but in a statement, cal athletics says, quote. >> we are shocked to hear the reports that cal athletics hall of famer jean ransom has been identified as a victim in a deadly freeway shooting. our thoughts are with jean's family and friends for this tragic loss. jean was one of the greatest players in our men's basketball program's history. and he will be greatly missed. oakland mayor libby schaaf's office response to the shooting by stating, quote, the loss of life due to gun violence is a tragedy for the family and friends of gene ransom and our entire community. the mayor will be relentless in her pursuit of state resources to install cameras with privacy protections at on and off ramps that can assist investigations such as these and ultimately hold those accountable who act with such heinous disregard for human life. >> too many guns and a lack of cameron's echoing what oakland's police chief leronne armstrong stated after toddler jasper wu was shot and killed on i-80 in november. >> in a statement, the alameda county sheriff's office says, quote, we do support freeway cameras in alameda county. we hope our elected officials and 25 year-old. >> one angel garcia of san francisco taken into custody this morning. now facing charges in connection to the murder of jean ransom. we'll bring you updates as this story continues to develop. >> and we know acts of gun violence like these on bay area. freeways are not new. but in recent months they have grown a lot more deadly was on november 6 that 23 months old. jasper wu was struck by a stray bullet while his mother was driving home to fremont on 8.80, he was taken to a local hospital where he later died. and it was just a month ago that an alameda county sheriff's recruit was killed in a freeway shooting. 28 year-old david, when was driving home from work when someone shot into his car right near the bay bridge toll plaza. the california highway patrol is investigating both of these deadly shootings. but as of tonight, no arrests have been made in either case and there's no information to pass along about a suspect. >> meanwhile, oakland police have arrested 3 people who they say are connected to a series of recent carjackings. police arresting the trio on wednesday in the acorn neighborhood. officers say they found a rifle and a handgun along with some ammunition inside of a home. so far, police have not released the names of those suspects. >> argent sideshow that happened overnight. you can see it here in the distance there. this is citizen app. video. many cars gathered right there in the middle of the night. local police say that this weekend they have sent out additional officers and tow trucks to crack down on sideshows. also the east bay, pittsburgh police are investigating a carjacking incident that happened yesterday in the video here. you can see police chasing after a gray car. the officers were able to make the arrest after that car crashed into the side of the road. police say the 2 teenagers beat the victim and stole that car right after they received reports of one patrol officer seeing that car passing by. and then that's what started a brief pursuit. the suspects are said to have minor injuries and will stay in jail. >> in the east bay as well. the alameda county fire department responding to a business fire in san leandro this morning. fire officials say they were able to keep flames from spreading to other nearby buildings. no one was hurt tonight. crews still trying to figure out exactly ready for the start of your sunday kron. 4 meteorologist rebecca strong as in tonight for murray. so with a look at what's on the way. >> yeah. and jonathan, just enough. you like sunshine and warm temperatures. i have really good weather wise for you right now. we're seeing a little bit of patchy fog roll through parts of the san francisco international airport. and we're going to see just a little bit of patchy fog through parts of the bay area tonight, lows in the 30's and 40's, very chilly. but a big warm up as we get into tomorrow. high pressure is going to start to really strengthen over the entire state of california. that's going to be bringing us those mid to upper 60's tomorrow the next week it's going to strengthen even more so bringing the bay area 70's, you can believe it, mid 70's, that's we're expecting towards the end of next week. so lots of sunshine. it's going to feel more like spring than anything else. visibility was. it's a pretty good out there. like i said, we're going to have some low lying clouds, a little bit of patchy fog in some spots. but things should clear out into the afternoon tomorrow and reveal a whole lot of sunshine, folks like half moon bay at the coast. there you might be seeing some of that cloud cover through much of the day tomorrow. temperatures outside right now 40's we've got a couple of 50's still left here. 45 in freeman right now. 43 in livermore, brunn would currently at 46, 40 degrees in fairfield. 39 in napa right now. nevada. you're currently at 41 degrees. futurecast for showing us so that high pressure, that ridge that just will not go anywhere. it will not break down. you could see it here in our future cast for shot. and it's keeping all the wet weather. the cold fronts and storms away from the bay area. it's keeping it all to the far north of us. so washington and oregon will be seeing of the wet weather. we will remain dry here in the bay area. in for the next week or so. it's going to be like that. and the high pressure is just going to be sticking with us and continuing to build throughout the next 7 days here. but next weekend, we're going to get a little bit of cloud cover. but still the temperatures remain quite warm for the bay area. and in fact, these are going to be your afternoon highs tomorrow mid to upper 60's in some spots near 70 degrees, especially in your south bay's own downtown san jose. 69 oakland, you'll be at a high of 67 and 65 right here in san francisco. back to the news. rebecca, thank you. now to covid-19 coverage of the saturday night. >> more than 900,000 folks have now died here in the united states from the covid-19 since the pandemic. those numbers coming to us from johns hopkins university in baltimore, maryland. that whole has actually been sped up by the omicron variant 100,000 people have died in just the last 2 months. half a million people have died at this 0.1 year ago, the united states maintains the highest reported death toll of any country in the world. >> the rest of the country is now going through. what we here in the bay area have been experiencing now for several weeks. overall, hospitalizations are going down but cases and deaths are still rising as the omicron surge is making its final push across the nation. but with the same thing happening across the pond in europe before this and most of the west coast already having gone through it as well. >> there's our there are some signs of hope. tom negovan has more. >> at hospitals around the country, doctors and nurses are still running low on icu beds but hopeful. and obviously, you know, at this point who is trying to get over the current search. a surge fueled by the omicron variant 13 months into a vaccination program. many believe was the beginning of the end of the covid pandemic. or we know that across the united states and here locally, the hospitalizations are going down. but while cases and hospitalizations in the u.s. are going down, deaths are still going up. >> in fact, more than 2400 americans are dying from covid every day, up 30% in the last 2 weeks. president biden late evening friday press release calling the death toll another tragic milestone. 900,000 american lives lost to covid-19 urging all americans to get vaccinated. get your kids vaccinated. the administration has already purchased over 20 million doses of covid medications paxlovid and mount the pier of year. there are plans to scale up production but the bulk of those doses aren't expected until spring or summer. and that's forcing medical staff to make difficult choices deciding which patients get priority out of the whole 2 years. that's that's the most demoralizing part of it. >> i think as a nurse's positions, last thing we ever want to do is to ration care. >> that was tom negovan reporting for us tonight. >> a new report from the california department of public health found that always wear a face mask inside are half as likely to test positive for covid-19 officials say that people who wear n 95 mask or about 80% less to test positive than those who never wear a mask inside that number dropped to 60% for folks who wear surgical masks. meanwhile, the centers for disease control and prevention has unveiled a new wastewater tracking system that gives communities across the country. an early warning of growing covid-19 infections in their areas. water samples in an area we're told typically turn positive for covid-19, anywhere from 4 to 6 days before cases in the region start to rise. the data is available on the highlighting some of the events taking place across california and across the bay area will go to orange county now where thousands of people came out for the annual black history, paraded unity festival. this weekend marks the 42nd year for that event. there was also a health village for people could get free health screenings and pick up some wellness information. meanwhile, here in the bay area, there are still several events that will take place to honor black history month. some will be held virtually others in person. napa valley's 5th annual black history month event was held this year on zoom. the theme this year was black health and wellness. the $25 mills were also handed out at crosswalk community church. this included wine donated by a black owned winery in the east bay on valentine's day. an open mike night is planned at the new parish in downtown oakland. then on the 27th, the 5th annual black joy parade will also hit the streets of oakland in san francisco. blues concert is set for martin luther mccoy on february. 26th, you can find a complete list of events taking place during the month of february to honor black history in the bay area. you can find that on thursday, february 24th at 6.30. >> day 2 of the 2022 winter olympic games in beijing. the city continues to buzz with olympic activity. some of the events that folks should be on the look out for include ski, jumping ice hockey, snowboarding, lose and figure skating. the women are set to take the ice in their short program team event last night, nathan chen gave the u.s. and lead in the men's
