We had definitely seen the smoke in the backyard and uh, we came down the street. And uh at first it was just a small fire and it definitely picked up fast because of the valley and the winds. Theyre really picking up today. Definitely spread across the hills in the back, just about hitting the refinerythe blaze burned close to the phillips 66 oil refinery. People who live in the area say they were concerned about the flames causing an explosion. Tony perez witness i was definitely afraid of the refinery blowing up, possibly hitting pipeline underground. That definitely was the first thing coming through my mind for sure just because of the dry weather and theres a lot of dry brush on the ground there were no evacuations. No structures threatened. And no was injured. Hermela Aregawi its hard to see this time of night. But fire officials tell us whatever smoke is still left is just hot spots that could reignite. Theyll be here throughout the night and into tomorrow morning make sure those spots are no longer a threat. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Its under investigation. Grazing his head with a bullet. Nunezs family believed he was suicidal. And called police. When officers arrived. They say nunez began pointing that gun at authorities. So they opened fired. However the 18year olds family say they hid the weapon from nunez. And he was unarmed during the shooting. The legal action filed against san jose seeks compensatory and punitive jr stone in the east bay a woman is behind bars tonight after confessing to killing her parents. Police say it happened in a home in this pittsburg neighborhood. 50 year old Menique Lashon is behind bars. Lashshons 67 year old mother and 73 year old father were both killed. Stabbed multiple times. Police say lashon lived with them, tried to clean the scene before calling police, and eventually confessed. The name or motive behind the killings is unknown tonight. jr stone investigators say that fireworks may be to blame for an Apartment Fire in antioch last night. This is what it looked like across the street from the Somersville Towne Center last night. The first started around 10 pm. Crews believe a grass fire led to the Apartment Fire. Three people were injured. They were taken to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalitation. Firefighters say 24 apartments are affected. They said the grass fire took out a power line which created problems as they tried to put the flames out. jrs shelters in the east bay are facing a big problem following 4th of july celebrations. This dog was wearing his patriotic colors at the antioch Animal Shelter but he was just one of many in there that was confused about fourth of july traditions. We are finding ourselves inundated with stray animals following the fourth of july celebration, mostly large dogs, so were running out of kennel space. Pets that have escaped over the holiday have taken to serious efforts in reaction to fireworks displays. Some break through windows and doors to try and get out. The shelter has taken steps on saturday to reconnect pets with their owners. Were trying to encourage owners to try and claim their lost pets so were waiving any impound fees. Kron4s Charles Clifford talked to fire crews in contra costa county. He gives us some tips on what you can do to prevent fires. In just the past few weeks, fast moving grass fires have become a regular occurrence around the bay area. Extended stretches of hot weather has left the grass and trees brown, dry and ready to burn. Cal fire says that 95 percent of all wildfires in california and started by people. Fire officials are now asking the public to use common sense in order to prevent fires. They suggest never using lawn mowers in dry vegetation. Dont park vehicles in tall dry grass. Keep dry brush and grass cleared away from homes. And make sure that cigarette butts are properly extinguished. They are also asking people to never burn dry leave or grass, especially on windy days. Sotso right now we are at 112 and its 98 degrees outside. Contra costa Animal Services is also working to get the word out about the dangers pets face during hot weather. They say that in recent weeks they have been receiving a high volume of calls about animal being left in cars where temperatures can be considerably hotter than outside. Animal servies is also reminding the public that anyone can take action to help an animal trapped in a hot vehicle but only after calling 911, exhausting all others options, and making sure its safe to rescue the animal. The Sonoma County department of Health Services tested the water two times this week and found high levels of coliform and ecoli bacteria. Health officials believe there is fecal waste in the water.
