Thankfully he mostly stays upstairs. Like him, all his neighbors are staying put. Sot if someone has a lower car where they cant move we get behind them with ours and push them throughsot we just gotta watch out for each other. Kron4 chief meteorologist Brittney Shipp is tracking the rising river levels in the weather center. In san rafael a mudslide seriously damaged a home. And is still threatening other houses tonight. Kron4s Charles Clifford shows us. Around 8 in the morning on tuesday, the San Rafael Fire Department responded here to Mountain View avenue on reports of a tree that was about to fall. Upon arrival they discovered that a mudslide had completely destroyed this home. The slide apparently happened slowly over several hours and the family that lives in the house was able to get out safely. Neighbors passing by through out the day were stunned. Sot its unbelievable. It humbles yah. Sotits devastatingsot houses can be rebuilt. There just glass and wood and stuff. Sotim just glad everyone is ok. In addition to destroying this home, the mudslide also continues to threaten the homes on either side. Both have been red tagged by the city and are considered uninhabitable. One home has already suffered some damage and the other has several feet of mud in the back yard. Happening now all but one lane is closed on highway 17. In the Santa Cruz Mountains. Its after a mudslide came down on the road. It hit a man driving a pickup a truck. Grant lodes is here with the video. And the interview with the man lucky to have walked away. One southbound lane opened around 6 00 tonight. After that enourmous landslide could have killed someone this morning. The three other lanes of 17 are still closed and its not clear when they will be open to traffic. The man whos lucky to be here tonight. Erne huddin, of capitola. He says all that dirt and rock plowed into his pickup truck. Like a runaway train. Lifting his truck like a toy and tossing it over the center divider. And into the southbound lanes. He was trapped for about 10 minutes before freeing himself. Kron4s jeff bush is live near the mudslide in the Santa Cruz Mountains several lanes of highway 17 continue to be closed at this hour. Kron fours jeff bush is live tonight near Scotts Valley with the latest on that mud slidejeff. The southbound direction is open but for only one lane. The north bound direction is still closed as it has been through out the day. You can see cal trans crews are working through the night and hope to have at least one of the north bound lanes open by morning but there is a lot of debris to clear and Officials Say they want to make sure everything is safe before reopening the north bound lanes. Happening tomorrow schools in marin county are expected to reopen. Many were closed today because of the storm. But there could be more closures later this week. Kron4s Spencer Blake checked out some of the closed schools and talked to students. The empty parking lot at Tamalpais High School almost made it look like a saturday. Though tam high was one of 27 schools in marin county that canceled classes, Keeley Lanigan had already started walking to it. There was all these puddles and i got super wet. But yeah, it was raining really hard and there was flooding. A snapped sapling in front of campus was evidence of the wind, and the wood chips on the sidewalk show how high the water rose. Most of it receded by the afternoon, but there were still some lanes that were too dangerous to drive in. Over in larkspur, this group of kids went to school anyway. To play basketball. It was on snapchat. I just saw a few people like video taping it from over here. It was getting like really high from the tippy top. Hes talking about the corte madera creek, just yards from kent middle school. It had risen at least up to this walking trail early tuesday when students heard the news. And at Redwood High School in larkspur its even more obvious why they had to cancel classes; check out the water all the way up to the bleachers on the softball field. Public works even blocked off the parking lotwhere the nearby marsh had spilled over. Most people were already at school when they said no school today, so it was kind of funny. Our crews have been on this story all day. This morning kron4s will tran was there live for a flood rescue in sonoma county. That was where highway 121 meets highway 12 in sonoma. At least three cars got stuck. And later in the day this ups truck got stuck. Firefighters started to tether out to rescue the driver, but the chp instead pushed the disabled vehicle out of the water. The road is still closed tonight with no estimated re opening. Happening now niles canyon road is back open in fremont after severe flooding. There was approximately two feet of water on the roadway. The nearby Alameda Creek rose fast. Bringing an enormous amounts of water. And uprooting trees in its path. There were also some major problems on the penninsula. Kron4s Maureen Kelly gives us an upclose look at some major traffic disruptions on highway 84 in woodside. Rain loosened rocks. And some big boulders came down onto highway 84 east of skyline blvd this morning. Closing off the westbound lane to traffic. And the trouble is. This was the good side of this section. The east bound side has been closed for weeks. Check out the cracks in the ashplat. The ground beneath it is washing out. This situation made worse when this stand of six redwoods fell last week. See this peg. It was a monitor put into this same section of the road back in 2006 when there was a similar problem. Its not supposed to be sticking out. It means the road has slipped six inches. Standupthe crews out here think they should have this slide cleaned up and westbound 84 back open sometime by wedneday afternoon they are hopingbut the job to reopen eastbound 84 could take six months. But this isnt the only spot where theres trouble on this road. Which below the slide is only open to locals starting from portola road. For good reason. Since there are little slides. All over causing hazards for motorists. This one apparently took a young tree down with it, the force of teh slide, snapping it some of the newer residents are surprised to be dealing with rural problems so close to the civilization of silicon valley. A few weeks ago we had a power outage that lasted 4 days and then a tree fell and broke our water main so we didnt have water for four days. The road problems are more managable, we are glad to have power and water. I hope it stays that way. But at least 65 people who live around hwy 84 west of skyline blvd did have their power knocked out. For a chunk of the day. When a power pole came down. Another casuality of the storm. Today heard arguments over the president s travel ban. The order, which bans people from 7 predominently muslims countries, was signed by the president late last month. But on friday a federal just in seattle signed a temporary restraining order blocking the ban. A decision is expected later this week. All this, as the president escalates his battle with the media. The number of teens using heroin has doubled in the past decade. As kron 4s Vicki Liviakis reports. Many of them are kids from the suburbs. Just like this antidrug Public Service announcement suggests heroin is worming its way onto suburban High School Campuses and into the student body. Stephanie is a self described soccer mom from danville who discovered her oldest was doing heroin at home. She has since learned that the High Schoolers friends are using heroin. And her child has nearly died doing it. Her fears are real. This east bay physician says he is now treating addicted teens in greater numbers. Stephanies child is still struggling. She shares a mothers warning to other parents who might miss the tell tale signs. Just like this antidrug there are several organizations that are working to curb the heroin and opiod epidemic. And another big storm on the way. Today in East Palo Alto the Woodland Creek condominium complex. Off west Bayshore Road. Was put under a voluntary evacuation because of how close it sits to the San Francisquito creek. That creek swelled to the highest level in years. Kron 4s gabe slate shows us how the city jumped into action to stop it from overflowing. Branch after branch floated down the san fran qeet toe creek in East Palo Alto until it they could not go any further. Mother nature was making a damn here at west Bayshore Road and the hwy 101 bridge. Taking advantage of the cities trash rack. Assistant city manager Sean Charpentier explains what that is. Sot sean look at how close this creek and the overflowing situation is to highway 101 southbound near the University Exit sot sean they are hustleling to fix this so the creek wont spill over onto 101 and shut it down creating an epic commute nightmare. Some residence stayed thruogh the volutary evacuation others were not taking the chance sot haily behind the complex down the road at the newell road bridge the locals were shocked to see how high the creek got so fast. I ran into len materman who was there to measure the creek, he is with the san fran cis qeet toe joint Powers Authority they issue the local flood watches and warnings. Sot len since 1931 major flooding in marin county has caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to homes and cars along the corte madera creek. This road in kentfield is now flooded for the third time in the last few weeks. Home owner, mitch levine says the water came up too fast for him to properly prepare this time. Now he is left waiting for water levels to go down. So he can start cleaning out the bottom level of his house. After getting a canoe ride to his house. Levine was able to put on rainboots and tried to help clear out blocked storm drains on the road. He said he was just trying to make some progress before the next round of rain. Check this out. One driver found themself caught in flood waters that submerged their car in a matter of minutes. You can see their small white car with rescue crews on scene. Fire fighters came to the resuce of that driver using a kayak and jet ski. Thankfully no one was hurt. More damage in the east bay. A large tree that came crashing down blocking access to a street in a martinez neighborhood. The tree was on the property of a man who has lived there for more than 40 years. And it was an emotional moment for him. Kron4s Haaziq Madyun has the story its a shame that i lose that old guyit is with Great Sadness that earl heaps gazes upon this massive oak tree on his property here at the corner of alhambra way and tahoe street in martinez. The oak came down during the storm Tuesday Morning and completely blocked tahoe street. Very fortuitus because if the tree fell in the other direction. It would have taken my house out, that trunk alone is probably 50tons, its probably 2 or 300 years old, it was this big when i moved in here back in the 70smr. Heaps describes the nerve shattering sound of the tree when the tree uprootedi thought a plane had crashed in the back. Then i thought that this big oak tree fell, well anyway, it scared the hell out of meit shocked his neighbors too. This is the view they have of the tree from the other side of tahoe street well i am just glad that nobody was hurt, hopefully nobodys car was under it at the time, we lost power for a few hours but that wasnt too bad but this is just quite sad, there is a lot of history therenobody knows that more then mr. Heapsyeah. Too bad there was no one was injured and no vehicles damaged when the tree came down. In martinez Haaziq Madyun kron4news in Castro Valley a mudslide briefly closed down a major commute road near san ramon. A section of crow canyon road was shutdown. Between Norris Canyon road and Bollinger Canyon road. While the slide was cleared. A lot of commuters use this section of crow canyon road to get to and from interstate 680. Fallen trees and mudslides have closed several roads in napa county today. Several hundred feet of redwood road is still covered with this mudslide tonight. This is about two miles outside the city of napa. Public works says it happened around 4 this morning. All surrounding residents have lost power because of it. And say since such a large section of road is blocked. It may take a few days to clear the debris. A giant pine tree that fell neary has blocked another road in st. Helena. It has caused a major power outage in that area as well. Last nights heavy rainfall flooded roads until cars were no longer able to pass through. Some of them including big ranch road at oak knoll avenue which reopened by early afternoon. More rain for rest of the week. Heavy on thursday National News now. A tornado touched down in one of americas most iconic cites. Causing widespread damage. And injuries. Grant lodes is here with video of the twister. And what was left in its destructive path. Cell phone video shows the massive tornado as it charged through eastern new orleans. The storm hit late this morning, bringing with it a tornado that damaged homes and businesses. And the damage from the twister is telling. Some homes. Seemingly untouched. Others next door. Just a pile of rubble. Wood and roofing. And household items. Firefighers looking for victims. Several people were injured but thankfully no deaths that officials are aware of. Louisanas governor declaring a state of emergency. The southeastern part of the state was hardest hit. Seven tornados in total there. So many devastating scenes, with cars and trees tossed around and buildings
