Berkeley College Republicans gathered thursday in the wake of a violent protest that erupted the previous night at an event organized by their group. Protestors weeks in advance had tried to have uc berkeley cancel the talk on campus by guest speaker milo yannoupolous a provocative far right conservative. We had over 100 officers there and we expected them to keep the peace but unfortunately that didnt happen. When the school wouldnt budge saying yannoupolus had the right to give the speech using the First Amendment a Massive Group turned violent wreaking havoc by lighting trees on fire and tearing down a lamp post. Now Berkeley College republicans say they fear there is no guarenteed safety in sharing their conservative views on campus. We saw a Berkeley College republican member get punched for just wearing a trump hat on campus. One man outside the Republican Organization says he was interested in hearing what yannoupolous had to say when he ran into a protestor he says was throwing rocks at a business. They have about 50 consistent members out of the more than 30 thousand students enrolled at uc berkeley. The uc Berkeley Campus faces a new threat. From President Donald Trump. This morning the president took to twitter. Threatening to pull federal funds from cal, saying. If uc berkeley does not allow free speech. And practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view no federal funds . If the president was able to cut federal funds to cal, the impact would be significant. Right now uc berkeley gets about 600million dollars annually in federal money 200 million for Student Financial aid and 400 milliondollars for Research Research which University Officials say, fuels the states economy and the nations economy. And also leads to health and technology breakthoughs. On campus, many students found problems with both the president s tweet and last nights violence. East bay congresswoman barbara lee was quick to respond tweeting President Trump doesnt have a license to blackmail universities. Hes the president not a dictator. And his empty threats are an abuse of power. Last nights protest at uc berkeley spilled into the downtown area. A number of businesses were damaged. And now owners are left to clean up. Damaging property is never the answer to what you wantthe starbucks on center and oxford got some pretty extensive damage. It was closed thursday as construction crews boarded up windows and worked inside. Sot starbucks is owned by a local guy whos very generous to the community and a lot of these Property Owners are. Were a diverse community, and that diversity means respecting all the Diverse People in the communitybanks, atms, and Retail Stores were also hit. Eleven total. Sot even if it is covered by insurance there is still premiums, so theres no free lunch on any of thisberkeley has a history of free speech, activism and protest, and the city wants to make sure that all those causes are still honored but the ceo of the Downtown Berkeley association tells me they need to figure out a way to protect businesses during protests. Some feel for the folks that will now have to pay for all this, and those that were trying to get their point across. But right before 6 00. A group of 100 150 people dressed head to toe in black marched into the crowd. Seemingly disciplined and organized. And they proceeded to start throwing things at police and security. They grabbed metal security barriers and used them to break glass windows and doors. Some launched lit fireworks towards the building and police. A big fire was set. And all this happened between about 6 00 and 6 20. By then the decision had been made to cancel yiannapoliss speech. Then around 6 45. Something of a party erupted. An enormous speaker was strapped on a dolly and rolled in,. People started dancing. There was chanting. Fights broke out here and there throughout the night. Police say six people were injured. Though none was reportedly serious. And in the 7 00 hour. The crowd hit the streets. Marching through Downtown Berkeley. Crowds surrounded cars. At least one person was hit by a car that drive off. Today that driver contacted berkeley police. The Downtown Berkeley association, said that at least 10 businesses were damaged by the protest. Big banks. Chase. Bank of america. As well as starbucks were targteted. Many of them with graffiti. Some of the blackclad protesters tried to intimidate bystanders who snapped photos of the destruction, slapping phones out of peoples hands and pushing them away. Kron4s Charles Clifford talked to the womans heartbroken parents. Natsthursday afternoon, the parents of 29yearold carly flynn talked about how their daughter was the light of their lives. They describe a kind soul who loved animals and painting. Sotshe was the kindest person you would ever meetback on december 19th, carly had walked from her home here near Cherry Avenue and san pablo avenue to get a coffee at starbucks. According to investigators, around 530pm she was crossing san pablo on her way back home, when she was struck by a mid size white suv making a left hand turn onto san pablo from Cherry Avenue. The driver of that vehicle then fled the scene. Carly was transported to the hospital with critical injuries and died three days later. In the six weeks since her passing, investigators have not yet identified a suspect in this case. They do say that the intersection were carly was struck was busy that evening and they are now hoping that someone with information will come forward.
