door and for those of you in concord, we are still holding on at upper 30s. it is a cold start for places like santa rosa and napa. high clouds moving into the bay area. ancipitation has been over the water. in the afternoon, expect scattered clouds and partly sunny condition and looks like temperatures up mainly in the 60s. hayward, we'll cee lo 60s for downtown san francisco and 66 and that seems to be the common number for redwood city and sunnyvale. in san jose there is been a violent thanksgiving at 4:00 this morning after getting reports of multiple shots being fired. kron four is at the scene. >> reporter: police officers say a man and a woman were sitting at the front porch at 7:00 in the morning where multiple shots were fired. we got a chance to talk to the lieutenant with the seasons police department, he says right now, they're searching for two people and the motive is not known but they don't believe this was an intended target. >> the suspect approached in the vehicle and one was on foot and one was in the vehicle, that's what we know at the time. >> were words exchanged? >> i do not know. as far as i know, this appears to be a random act. i don't believe the victim and the suspect know each other at this point. >> robbery? >> there were no dialogue between the suspect and testimony victim. victim. >> we got a chance to talk to the family members inside the home. they refused to go on camera. that's the latest, reporting frl tran kron 4 news. just before 1 a.m., a person alerted fire officials to a dead body inside of the highway 87 overpass. emergency crews responded and located the body inside a confined space. jose's rescue team was called to remove the body. the person who died may have been homeless. an in-depth study shows students dealing with similar incidents from professors and students many years. the campus's report took six years for the 100 page report to be completed and once inside of comments from students and faculty of their experiences and suggestions of how the school can address them. >> as far as anything that symbolizes an attack of gender group or sexuality, this is bigger than blackish. >> the campus report completed 2 years ago. this fall of diversity was crea. a representative says they believe that it represents more than ethnic group across the board. the number of hate crime in california s up to 12% last year and 900 crimes were reported in 2012 and down from 1,060 in 2011. crimes targeting a victim sexual ornamentation following near or r -- this is video from oakland of sasha fleischman in the passenger seat of the car riding home. sasha has finished a three weeks stay in the burn unit at san francisco memorial hospital. earlier this month, sasha suffers serious burn. while sasha's parents talk about her happiness after being home. >> sasha telling us which shirt she wants to hear on the way home and i don't think it changes anything about the way sasha is going to express herself. >> everything is great, we are hoping that something good will come out of this and you know this kind of intolerance will be that people realize that you can wear unusual clothing and it does not mean you can attack them. >> an oakland high school student is being charged as an adult. today is the annual thanksgiving day, volunteers have spent the last couple of days getting everything together. kron 4 news zoe is live with more on that, good morning. >> reporter: boy, it is very festive out here, you have the gospel music that's inspirational and all the volunteers have been here, they got here at 6:30 and thanksgiving breakfast is now being served. i want to come up and talk to some of the volunteers here. let's talk to char. how are you doing? >> i hear some pressure is kind of on, it says breakfast and you are on ham patrol. are you feeling the pressure? >> serving ham for breakfast and we are cutting more ham than turkey today. >> this is your second year, right? >> yeah. >> what brought you back? >> the people, it is a wonderful feeling. >> we have diana, too, she's a second volunteer as well. >> i know i always tell people that there is so many people who come and they never carve the ham or turkey but by the end of the shift they can go apply at bennihana because they have become experts. we have other young people here. hi, how old are you? >> 13. >> what brought you out here to volunteer? >> well, i need volunteer hours so i can graduate and i like to help people. >> you are here with your mom, right? >> no, just me and my mom. >> what's your job? books and pride itself on helping customers finding the perfect present. >> if you don't like to shop in downtown and going to the hassell of that kind of thing, small shoppers are the way to do it. >> because they atrack different customers. >> the people who don't shop black friday, shop boutiques because they find the general experience more satisfying. >> just down the street at lavish, the store is stocking up on christmas items from holiday cards to give from everyone on your list and while the bigger competition might be open, owner nicole says she would never make sher employee make friday shoppers are not worried about the turkey, they're in lines to get some deals. we are seeing how many people are spending thanksgiving waiting in line. are they having fun? >> reporter: a lot of them have pretty cold and a lot of them just waking up and right here at best buy. some of them are sleeping in their cars and finding spot. traditionally people are waiting in line after the dinner but now more and more retailers are opening their doors at thanksgiving and that means people that want to get th deals are force to wait in line. the s in here are not opened until 6 a.m.. i talked to the person in line and he got in line yesterday morning. i had a chance to talk to them and the big question was why do you do it and the other one was what are you going to get out of it when you are done. >> it is a tradition, it is kind of fun, you know, some people like to go walk on the edge of things. we like to come and sit at best buy's parking lot. good deals. >> we are picking up a couple of flat screen tvs and the new blue ray that's at half price and picking up some dvds and wi-fi devices and getting new tablets and even a new laptop for a friend of ours >> you know traditionally, what the whole thing was with black friday and why they call it black friday because that was a day that traditionally a lot of retailers say would go in the black after actually start making the profits. there is less days between thanksgiving and christmas this year, a lot of people decided now is the time to strike and more and more retailers are doing this opening on thanksgiving day. now, not everybody is happy about it especially that people have to work. it is not only best buy, it is target and jc penny and a lot of retailers are doing and a lot of people are giving up thanksgiving and waiting out here for the big deals. >> i heard some stores have people out as early as the early weekend, they started lining up at sunday and monday of this week. >> reporter: i am not bringing my personal opinion in any of these, i am supposed to be an objective activity observer but yeah, waiting for 7 days to get the deals, boy, it has to be a big deal for me to wait that long. >> yeah, it would have to be free for me. bay area police are asking for those that's drinking to have a designated driver. that means additional officers are on the road looking for drunk drivers from alcohol and also prescription drugs. >> there are so many alternatives, you can get a sober driver to drive. you have bart and you have taxi services. >> across the nation more than 700 people died in dwi related crashes last year and even if it is just having one drink, police say it is best to stay off the road and have a friend to take you home or take a can or uber a lot of san jose where police are investigating a shooting. will tran has the details. >> reporter: police say the man and woman described to be in their 20s, they're not saying whether it's a husband or wife or family members, were sitting on the front porch around 4:00 in the morning when two people, one in a car and another on foot fired multiple times. the man was hit many times. the woman may have been hit by a ricochet. the police department says at this point there's no reason to believe that in fact the shooters went after these two people. >> as far as i understand at this point, i don't believe it's gang related so i can't comment on that. >> you said it's random. is it unusual for somebody to get shot on their front porch randomly? >> let's say this, it's very early in the morning. it's 4:00. these individuals obviously are celebrating thanksgiving a little early. they're out on their porch. based on the information that i have, it doesn't appear that the victims and the suspects knew each other. >> reporter: we got a chance to talk to family members who were inside when the shooting took place. they didn't go on camera but they told me after the shots were fired and they saw the two people hit, they tried to bring them inside and assist them before the police officers and paramedics arrived. that's the latest from san jose, will tran, kron 4 news. >> investigators are trying to identify a body that was found inside a freeway overpass in san jose this morning just before 1:00 a.m. a person alerted fire officials to a dead body inside of the highway 87 overpass. these are photos. emergency crews responded and located the body inside that confined space. san jose's urban search and rescue team was called in to remove the body. it is near a homeless encampment, leading investigators to believe that the person may have been homeless. san jose state is taking heat because of the torment of the black student earlier this month. students of color have dealt with similar incidents from professors, coaches and other students for many years. the climate report took six years for the 100-page report to be completed. what's inside includes based on race, ethnicity make up more than half of the complaints. crimes targeting a sexual orientation fell 4%. a teen set on fire on board a bus is finally home with family just in time for the month, sasha suffered serious burns when police say a 16-year-old passenger on the same bus set the gender neutral teen's skirt on fire while sasha slept. yesterday, sasha's parents talked about the teen's happiness at being home. >> sasha told us exactly what skirt he wanted to wear on the way home and i don't think that changes anything about the way that sasha is going to express himself. >> everything is great. we're just hoping that something good will come out of this. that this kind of intolerance will be -- people will realize that you can wear unusual clothing and it doesn't mean that you have a right to attack them. >> sasha's alleged teen attacker is a 16-year-old oakland high school student who is now being charged as an adult. well, today is the annual thanksgiving day meal at glide memorial church in downtown san francisco. volunteers have spent the last couple of days getting things together. it looks like volunteers are very busy at work this morning. >> reporter: they have been busy since 6:30 this morning, cutting up vegetables, carving turkeys, carving hams. let's show you some video of why they have been doing this all morning long. this is just downstairs from where they are at. this is where glide actually has their hall where they feed everyone. they're going to be serving 5,000 people today. it's amazing that they're able to do it on a daily basis of 2,000. but 5,000 is really incredible. but they get a lot of volunteers. they get a traditional thanksgiving dinner with all of the fixings of yamss and mashed potatoes and turkey and ham. this is breakfast. it will go on until about 9:00. then it starts all over again at 9:00, from 9:00 until 1:30. that will be thanksgiving dinner. right now it's breakfast. i was talking to the snow. rain and sleet in a lot of different areas in the east coast. you see the snow coming down in indiana, michigan and virginia. in the meantime, 300 flights were canceled yesterday in cold conditions for everybody over at the macy's thanksgiving parade. live look in san francisco shows high clouds. 53 out the door in san francisco. low 50s down the east bayshore line. into the they hired a company to give the airport a high-tech makeover. they included top local chefs. more than 1700 ipads are available at each restaurant seat as well as throughout the concourse. they can be used to order food, check flight status and browse the web. a santa at the macy's thanksgiving parade this morning. there he is waving to all of the excited kids. the parade just wrapped up about half an hour ago. parade officials were worried that the high winds would force the giant balloons to be grounded. but all of the balloons made it throughout the parade. they were lower than in years past. but the parade going off without a hitch and everybody got to see all of their favorite characters. it's thanksgiving so the markets are closed today. we're taking a look at how the numbers closed on wall street yesterday. the dow up 24 points. the nasdaq also up 27 points. the s&p 500 added 4 and a half points. and as we said, markets are closed today but they will reopen tomorrow added street view for airports and train stations. this feature works just like the street view of regular maps taking up close and percentage. navigating through highly traffic airport and train stations can be difficult if you don't know the layout. this can make traveling easier, especially if you have time between connecting flights and need to plan out a run through a airport or train station. this feature is in the beginning stages. they have only 50 major train stations and 60 airports so far but they will be adding more soon and eventually they will have them all mapped out. this is possible by their new trekker technology which takes the google street view camera off of cars and putts them on humans in backpack form. over the last year, they have mapped out incredible places having their people literally walk them. like world famous landmarks, museums. they have done highly desired travel destinations like venice, italy, riding the canals. it feels like you're in venice if you go through the street view there. they also have street viewed remote areas like parks, volcanos, hiking trails, mountains, place that's are really hard to get to. they even put their gear on a skier and street viewed the most popular ski runs in the country. and they have been under water, documenting some of the more popular areas to scuba dive. you can see where this is going. in a few years when they have covered the entire earth, you will literally be able to visit anywhere in the world from your computer or mobile device through google maps. that's pretty cool. gabe has become a competitive, violent sport for some of the best deals in the bay area the day after thanksgiving. traditionally it started with deals on friday morning. but some stores are offering the deals today on turkey day itself. stores we're talking like kmart are opening before the turkey is out of the oven and staying open for two straight days. target will be opening at 8:00 this evening, adding extra hours until black friday arrives. bart is offering passengers a way to get around the crowded roadway for black friday. there will be trains operating throughout the system starting at 6:30 tomorrow morning to accommodate some of the shoppers. they canceled scheduled maintenance at the pittsburgh line in anticipation of a busy holiday shopping weekend. they are going to be waiting in lines, having breakfast. i want to know what deals are they most excited about, jackie? >> reporter: they're exciteedabout all of the deals to tell you the truth. you can see them right here. they're having their thanksgiving breakfast behind a barricade in front of tents here. a lot of the people started waiting yesterday. the guy in the front there, the guy in the checkered -- this guy right here. he got out here yesterday at 8:30 yesterday morning. so it's been exactly 24 hours that he's been waiting in line. and i have to be honest with you, he's my neighbor. and he does this every year. he and his wife come out here every year. they've been doing it for years to get the best buys at best buy. ha-ha. they have made it a tradition. that's what a lot of people say they do. they have made it a tradition. they're willing to give up their thanksgiving. and with more and more retailers opening on thanksgiving, obviously people are getting out here earlier and earlier. traditionally it was black friday, people would have thanksgiving dinner and then come out here. everybody is open on thanksgiving now so they're getting out here the day before thanksgiving and even earlier. here at best buy, they don't even open until 6:00 p.m. tonight. they have a ways to go before they open. i did have a chance to talk to somebody else in line this morning. he and his daughter were watching tv yesterday. they looked at each other and decided they were going to make an adventure of the day. i asked them the proverbial question of why are you doing it? >> you know, the excitement. you know, hannah immediately said let's do t i was kicking it around. i thought, do i want to spend the time out there alone? and she said, no, i want to go. so we said okay, let's do it. so we threw a couple sleeping bags in the truck and some water and some food and bundled up and came out. so it's -- you know, it's the 500 savings and thinking of the nice tv we're going to have on the wall. and you know, it's the adventure also. so it's -- it's a win-win. >> reporter: so he said he was going to save around $500. so you do the math. he's been out here for about 20 hours, 24 hours. i'll let you do the math but it's around $25 an hour that he's spending to spend his time out in front of best buy. this is being repeated across the bay area. it's multiple retailers that are open. it's not only best buy, it's target, wal-mart, jc penney. a lot of them are opening today. and a lot of these people are willing to wait it out and save big mondayyand have their thanksgiving dinner or breakfast, as you can see here, standing in line, waiting for the deals. >> they look cold. it's not all about the deals, but it's the tradition for a lot of families. they do it every year and they have been doing it for years. >> that's what i said. the guy first in line here, kevin, they do it every year. they have been doing it for more than ten years. every year they're out here again. their whole house is stocked with best buy goods and they get a new tv or laptop or computer and they have made it a tradition out there. >> i hope those coffees are keeping them warm on this chilly morning. bay law enforcement officials are asking those that drink to have a designated driver or a plan to get home safely on the weekend. dui check points will be set up during the holiday. one of the law enforcement agencies in a period of maximum enforcement now through new year's day. that means additional officers are on the roads looking for drunk drivers or even prescription drugs. >> there are so many other alternatives. you can get a designated sober driver to drive. you have muni. you have bart. you have taxi services. >> across the nation, more than 700 people died in dui-related crashes last year. even if you're only have one or two drinks, police say stay off the road and have a back up. there are many ways to get home safely. the time is 8:34. we thought we might get rain around here for thanksgiving. but it looks like things are changing. here is erica with your thanksgiving forecast. >> things are changing. the models have completely backed off on the rain. looking at cloudy conditions throughout the afternoon. thanksgiving will be a pretty nice day. mid to upper 60s. definitely a possibility. expect light winds and partly sunny conditions as we head into the afternoon. now, by tomorrow, it could be a little warmer. we will see more in the way of sunshine with temperatures expected to climb into the mid to upper 60s. sunshine will carry us 35th anniversary of the assassinations of the two politicians. the mayor reflecting on the lives that died at the hands of a gunman who was once a colleague of theirs. >> i don't think i would be standing in front of you all today as the mayor of san francisco but for the leadership and sacrifice of the mayor and supervisor harvey milk. that's how significant i see their vision here. >> the assassination of the two changed the social and political landscape of san francisco. a police chief in indiana takes on a shocking, literally and figuratively, challenge to raise funds for a new squad car. danny baker agreed to get tased if it would raise $5,000. the 63-year-old chief went through it after money starting flowing in, including a very big $25,000 gift. >> i give thanks to all of the donations. we really appreciate it. i think that's just an example of how small town communities, people stick together. >> the crowd loved it and it's obvious that they love their chief. oh, different customers. >> the people who don't shop black friday shop boutiques because they find the general experience more satisfying. >> reporter: just down the street at lavish, the store is stoking up on christmas items from ornaments to holiday cards to gifts for everyone on your list. while the bigger competition might be open, the owner nicole says she would never make her employees work on thanksgiving just to make a profit. >> have a great day. >> taking them away from their families would completely go against all of my values as a business owner. giving the people the days with their family make them the people they are for the rest of the year. >> reporter: some store owners also say they are looking forward to small business saturday, a day where they can offer discounts and possibly entice new customers. in san francisco, kron 4 news. >> some whole foods employees in chicago protesting the store's decision to open on thanksgiving. nearly a dozen workers and union supporters rallied last night saying they deserve to spend time with their families. a whole foods spokesperson says holiday hours are voluntary and anyone who requested time off got it. workers could call it the collected sigh of relief heard up and down the east coast as millions of americans raced through crowds, rain and snow to get to their loved ones in time for the holidays, there were some inconveniences but no major delays across the country. airports like the one in new york city pulled out all the stops to help traveler spirits high and relief the stress. >> i just missed my connection to albany and i'm hyper ventilating. >> reporter: some people traveling my plane were held up by the storms. >> cancellations across the east coast. >> reporter: while others were luckier. >> the busiest airport in the world, the holiday commute has been going well. >> reporter: for those that made the journey by car, there was heavy snow in michigan and ohio. and train travelers on the east coast were momentarily stalled right at rush hour. >> disabled train in the tunnel had every train running late. >> reporter: yet as the busiest travel day of the year drew to a close, many families may have been delayed, but they were reunited. >> we expected to be delayed so we weren't too disappointed. we made it here on time, ready to go home and eat. >> and we are tracking that storm that has caused some problems for the east coast. here is a look at your local and national forecast on this thanksgiving with erica. >> good morning and happy thanksgiving, annie. most of that storm, that massive system we've been tracking for the last couple of days is out in the atlantic. no longer bringing havoc to the eastern sea board. now, as we take a look at our local weather on this thanksgiving morning, waking up to mainly 40s and 50s. the exception is the north bay, santa rosa, 39 out the door right now. 44 degrees currently in concord. san francisco, very mild. you're heading out to 52 degrees. but futurecast 4 shows by lunchtime, we will see mainly 60s. we will keep the 60s around approaching the afternoon highs. temperatures in the low 60s along the coast to perhaps the mid to upper 60s inland. later on tonight, we are back in the 50s. it will get cold once again but at least you'll be inside eating the warm thanksgiving dinner. here is a look at the afternoon highs for today. we will keep downtown san francisco in the low 60s. satellite and radar shows the high clouds continuing to stream in. this all associated with that very weak system we thought would bring us rain. now, again, the rain chances have really backed off. so i don't think you will need to carry an umbrella around today. as we take a look at your 7-day around the bay forecast, perfect shopping weather, dry conditions, sunny skies, seasonal temperatures will carry us through sunday. but a dramatic cooldown is on the way. and tuesday and wednesday, colder air will filter into the bay area. we will struggle to make it to the mid-50s and we will tack on a 20% chance for showers tuesday night into wednesday morning. 8:49 is the time right now. here is george. >> here is a quick look at how light conditions are around the bay area. first at the toll plaza of the bay bridge, you will find no waiting or problems for your westbound ride. san mateo bridge equally light this morning and problem-free. as you would expect, a commute through the san ramon valley, both northbound, that's these lanes, and southbound here is extremely light. no delays. you will find obamacare website. >> reporter: with just two days to go with the self-imposed deadline to get the website working right, the obama administration says that healthcare.gov won't be able to enroll small businesses for another year, after promising that this would be ready. >> will the shop website for small businesses that was delayed be fully functional during december. >> yes. we will institute the shop component at the end of november. >> reporter: republicans quick to pounce on the administration for announcing another delay just before the thanksgiving holiday. house majority leader eric canter charging once again president obama has delayed another major portion of obamacare and once again he's tried to bury bad news around a holiday, hoping that nobody will notice. small businesses shopping for health care will be able to use direct enrollment with an insurer, agent or broker. but during a conference call with reporters, the administration was downplaying overall expectations. >> to be clear, november 30th does not represent a relaunch of healthcare.gov. it is not a magical date. >> reporter: the spokeswoman admits there will be times after november 30th that the website does not function properly. programmers still have a lot of work to do. the goal, make sure that it can handle 50,000 users at one time, yet there might be times when demand exceeds that. and consumers will be directed to a virtual waiting line. >> both the u.s. and japanese military are ignoring china's new defense known established over much of the east china sea. the u.s. recently flew two unarmed b52 bombers through the restricted region in a planned military exercise. january an used ships and flew planes to patrol the area and conduct surveillance across the area. both the u.s. and japan refuse to abide by china's demands that planes identify themselves is submit flight plans. officials in beijing have warned to take action against those that break the rules. here is >> let's say. this it's very early in the morning. it's 4:00. these individuals obviously are celebrating thanksgiving a little early, they're out on their porch. based on the information that i have, it doesn't appear that the victims and the suspects knew each other. >> reporter: we got a chance to talk to family members. they didn't go on camera but they told me after the shots were fired and they saw the two people hit they tried to bring them inside and assist them before the police officers and paramedics arrived. that's the latest. will tran, kron 4 news. investigators are working to identify a body found inside a freeway overpass in san jose early this morning. just before 1:00 a.m. a person alerted fire officials to a dead body inside of the highway 87 overpass. emergency crews responded and located the body inside a confined space. san jose's urban search and rescue team, they were called to the scene to assist in removing the body. the overpass is located near a homeless encampment leading investigators to believe that the person who died may have been homeless. san jose state university is taking a lot of heat for the way it's been dealing with the alleged torment of a black student earlier this month. an in-depth study shows students of color had dealt with similar incidents from procedures, coaches, and other students for many years. the campus climate report took six years for the 100-page report to be completed. what's inside includes comments from students and faculty about their experiences and suggestions on how the school can address them. >> a zero toll wraps policy for anything that symbolizes an attack on an ethnic group, gender group. this is bigger than just a black issue. >> the campus climate report was completed two years ago and the school disbanded the committee last year. this fall the commission on diversity was created. a representative says they believe it now represents more ethnic groups across the board. the state attorney general's office says the machine of hate crimes reported here in california declined about 12% last year and has dropped bey more than a third over the last decade. the report says 930 such crimes were reported last year, and that's down from 1,060 in 2011. hate crimes dropped 10% last year while making up more than half of the complaints. crimes targeting a victim's sexual orientation fell nearly 4%. in the east bay a teen who was set on fire on board an ac transit bus is home with family just in time for the holidays. this is video from oakland of sasha fleischman arriving home. sasha has finished a three-weak stay in burn unit at san francisco's st. francis memorial hospital. earlier this year sasha suffered serious burns when police say a 16-year-old passenger on the same bus sat the bender-neutral taken's skirt on fire while sasha slept. yesterday sasha's parents talked about the taken's happiness about being home. >> sasha told us which skirt they wanted to wear on the way home, and i don't think that changes anything about the way sasha is going to express himself. >> everything is great. we're just hoping that something goodwill come out of this that this kind of intolerance, people will realize that you can wear unusual clothing and it doesn't mean that after you right to attack them. >> sasha's ailed teen attacker is a 16-year-old student now charged as an adult. changing gears here on this thanksgiving holiday the annual thanksgiving day meal at glive memorial church is today. i see a lot of volunteers are still hard at work. >> reporter: good morning. the thanksgiving breakfast is over and now these people are trying to get ready for the thanksgiving dinner. let's show you video of thanksgiving breakfast. volunteers came in about 6:00 this morning when they started carving turkeys and ham and chopping up vegetables and making it ready for the patrons here. it's amazing that they serve 5,000 people today. it's been a long road for glide memorial. in fact, it's a special year. 5 years they've been doing this. i spoke with cecil williams, and he reflected about when he first got here. >> when i came hear and looked at this building and didn't see any people here in this building, i said, what's wrong? something is wrong with the church. and, of course, it was, because there were only 35 people here as members. so i said we've got change that. i told the bishop what invited me to come here. i said to him, i'm going to turn this church up side down and i'm going to change this city. and ever since then i've been trying to turn things up side down so people will become the primary direction of what we're about and how we're about it. >> reporter: well, he certainly has turned things up side down and around and every which way. he really has made this one of the most famous churches where people want to volunteer here all the time. in fact, i spoke to one volunteer, and, in fact, it was this gentlemen here, aaron. you said you have come here and vol lune teared or tried year after year. what happened? >> when we tried to volunteer, as soon as they open up, you had to go register within the hour, otherwise it's gone. a friend from work wanted to volunteer, and she tried, and the slots were gone within an hour. >> reporter: they're finally in. they got to volunteer this year. and that's really great. actually, the reverend told me he loves to vol lune tear for thanksgiving but they also need help every day of the weak. if you didn't get in today you can always get back on their website and try to volunteer some other day when they may need the help. a couple of other events, an anyway, as a reminder, they do after toy drive. christmas is coming up. they're asking for toys for children 12 and under. please, no toy guns. they're trying to stay away from the violence. the other thing, too, if you shop at any of the local whole foods stores, all of them are participating on this in the city, on december 4th, 5% of the proceeds will go to glide memorial. >> any idea how many turkeys they're going to carve? bayshore line. downtown san francisco will stay in the low sick. sunnyvale reaching a hey of 66. so overall very pleasant conditions. it is going to be a nice day. more in the way of sunshine. perfect me good. >> reporter: that may be good advice, because for shoppers like these, it's game on. welcome back. time now 9:30. a developing story out of san jose where overnight a body was found inside a freeway. now, not on a freeway but inside. will tran tells us how the person might have gotten inside the roadway. >> reporter: that's highway 87 in downtown san jose. these overpasses are actually hollow. authorities believe that a possible homeless person broke a lock to a door or latch and climbed inside. those doors are important to caltrans because those workers go inside for inspections. in fact, they say it was a homeless person who tipped off the authorities to come here at around 1:00 in the morning. it appears that this body had been inside for quite some time because initially they couldn't tell whether it was a man or a woman. reporting from san jose, will tran, kron 4 news. our stanley roberts recently went along with the highway patrol as they inspected those freeway caves and was surprised at what he found inside. >> highway patrol. come on down. >> reporter: the california highway patrol has to deal with more than just traffic enforcement. >> i just saw you go in there. come on down. >> reporter: they have to deal with this, too. people who have made the inside of the 280 freeway their homes. in this case, they are removing the people inside. >> who else is up there with you? >> reporter: usually the answer is no one. except this time caltrans brought something just to make sure. it's a remote camera that's designed to look inside the freeway caves and any possible boob bee trips. this is a power strip that appears to be connected to a power source. inside the caves they have found fully functioning air conditioning units, play station consoles, latch tops and flat screen televisions. in many of the cases the people living inside had vandalized the electrical wiring to get electricity, all attacks payer expense. oh, and did i mention that the space inside these caves are only three or four feet high. these holes were created by engineers for highway inspections. the csp cleared out these holes the day before. as soon as they leave, people return. >> you need to get out right now. >> reporter: so to keep from playing this cat-and-mouse game, engineers have a plan to sale them up permanentlily. but here's the problem. there are literally hundreds of these caves, so this location is a sort of a test spot. engineers need to make sure they don't accidentally seal someone inside the freeway when they finally close the holes. in san the air district issued winter spare the air alerts just yesterday and monday which means wood burning is banned in the bay area. but for today it's only strongly recommending that residents in the region refrap from doing. so the winter spare the air season running from november to february 2nd. today is the annual thanksgiving day meal at glide memorial church in downtown san francisco. volunteers there have been spending the last couple of days getting that huge feast together. kron 4 is live at glide memorial church. you can still see everyone is very busy carving those dozens of turkeys. good morning. >> reporter: it's more than a dozen. right when you think you're finished, someone hands you another turkey. i got a count, annie, from the last time. they cooked 400 turkeys. they actually started at the beginning of the month when they had a cook-off. let's show you video from thanksgiving breakfast. they have done that. they are now on to thanksgiving dinner. that started about 30 minutes ago. but pretty much the plate is very similar except that in the breakfast a lot of people wanted ham and, of course, for dinnary lot of people want turkey. so that's why right now both tables back here are just carving away turkeys. it's always fun to talk to a newbie. pete this is your first time volunteering, right? >> first time. >> reporter: what got you out here? >> originally just my wife, but then you get a sense of like the season, i guess. come out, volunteer. >> reporter: have you carved a turkey before? >> yes, i have. not like this. this is carnage. >> reporter: good luck there. >> they keep carving away. i just saw somebody who had to switch out their knife because they were carving so much it got dull. so these guys are busy. thanksgiving dinner will go on until about 1:30. tomorrow they won't be serving but they will be serving a lunch bag. that's going to be donated by other organizations outside of here. it's the celebrity chef ryan spot who prepared those lunch bags. they will be handing those out tomorrow. >> so not dozens but hundreds of turkeys. thank you for the clarification. sounds like a very festive atmosphere with all the runs. the others have nearly 200,000 miles on them. but the money is now flowing in, including a $25,000 gift confirmed today. things are looking up now for the town pd. this is what they plan to bay >> reporter: you could call it the collective sigh of relief heard up and down the east coast as millions of americans raced through crowds, rain, and snow to get to their loved ones in time for the holidays. there were some inconveniences, but no major delays across the country. ♪ walking in a winter wonderland ♪ >> reporter: airports like laguardia in new york city pulled out all the stops to help travelers stay comfortable. >> i just missed my connection to al ban anyway and i'm hyperventilating. >> weather caused delays and cancellations at airports along the east coast. >> reporter: others were more lucky. >> here in atlanta at hartsfield international, the busiest airport in the world, the holiday commute has been going well. >> reporter: for those who made the journey by car there was heavy snow in states like michigan and ohio. and train travelers on the east coast were momentarily stalled right at rush hour. >> a disabled train had every train running late. >> leave as orderly as you can. >> reporter: yet as the busiest travel did i of the year drew to a close, many families may have been delay, but they were reunited. >> we expected to be delayed so we weren't too disappoint. we've made it here on time, ready to go home and eat. and let the shopping season begin. many big box and department stores like wal-mart, toys "r" us, macy's and target are all going to be open today. kron 4 went to find out if this is putting extra pressure on small businesses which is trying to compete for holiday shoppers. >> do you want a gift bag or would you like me to wrap it? >> reporter: a busy store. just what boutique owners want to see during the holiday season. >> happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: they sell kids clothes, toys, and backs, and prides itself on helping customers find the perfect present. >> if you don't like to shop downtown or go through the hassle, small shops are the way to do it. >> reporter: the store is not worried about losing business to department stores open on thanksgiving because they attract different customers. >> the people who don't shop black friday shop boutiques, because they find the general experience more satisfying. >> reporter: just down the street at lavish, the store is stock up on christmas items from ornaments and holiday cards to gifts for everyone on your list. and wail the bigger competition might be open, owner nicole says she would never make her employees work on thanksgiving just to make a profit. >> taking them away from their families would completely go against all of my values as a business opener. giving people those days with their family is what makes them the people they are for the rest of the year. >> reporter: some store owners also tell me they are looking forward to small business saturday, a day where they can offer some discounts and possibly entice new customers. in san francisco, i'm justine waldman, kron 4 news. another issue with the healthcare enroll meant website. small businesses won't be able to use to the get coverage for their employees for another year. however, they are going to be able to sign up for coverage in other ways. in a statement, health and human services said small employers will use direct enrollment what. that means, the businesses interested in buying insurance in the program will have to use either an issuer or broker. the affordable care act doesn't require companies with fewer than 15 employees to buy insurance. some whole foods employees in chicago not happy about having to work on thanksgiving. they protested last fight. nearly a dozen workers and union supporters rallied saying they deserve to spend time with their families. but a spokesperson said that holiday hours are voluntary and anybody what wanted looks like perhaps the possibility for some raindrops tuesday into wednesday. 9:52 right now. here's george. thanks erica. you were telling folks about an accident on 92 near skyline. the vehicle went over the embankment there. the decision was made not to retrieve the vehicle until the daylight hours. and that operation is underway right now. so there's one-way traffic control on 92 between upper and lower skyline boulevard. that's going to mean slight delays in and out of half moon bay. traffic not much slower than usual. just a brief delay as you head in and around. looking at your bay bridge ride, no problems. it's been like this all morning long. the commute through the south bay, excuse me, through the east bay has been an easy one on 680 through walnut creek, whether northbound or southbound, the volume has picked up a bit. in the south bound, san jose, look at this, light and easy traffic. for 101 heading past the guadalupe parkway, both southbound and northbound. wherever
