On the other side of 280. The area around south 17th street is also flooded. Major flooding creating quite a mess in the neighborhood. Kron 4s Haaziq Madyun has been there all day. And joins us live now with update on the situation. Haaziq. I arrived here this morning and coyote creek has been rising ever since. Folks who live here along south 1th street tell me the last time the creek caused flooding was back in 97. But they say it was nothing like what they have seen here today coyote creek rising fast tuesday behind homes here on south 17th street in san jose this is very unusual, this is crazyi have been here since 1970 and i have never seen it this highresidents with low laying backyards are trying to prevent the water from flooding their homes. In some cases, it is a lost cause. The creek level has increased 10feet. Here you see the water is rising up to the roof line of this home. However a few doors down the water has yet to reach the foundation of mike smalls propertyyeah we are busy, just trying to keep the creek from coming up over our wall and into our basement, lots of sandbagging going onlots of sandbagging going on next door at his neighbors home as well, as you can see the water is covering a huge section of the yard and has flooded the lower level of the home water is coming through the basement door at the entrance, i put sandbags in front of the door but its still coming in, so were going to put sandbags inside the house at the door, from the window here you can see its about 4 inches on the floor so everything is probably gones city Officials Say too much water coming over the spillway at the Anderson Reservoir is to blame for the flooding in san jose. This is video taken today. From our partnership with abc 7 news. Showing the intense water flow coming from the Anderson Reservoir. Which is in morgan hill. The Santa Clara Valley Water District says the reservoir is at 103 percent of capacity. The water is normally kept at 68 of capacity. For seismic safety reasons. San jose mayor liccardo says there is a breach along the bank of coyote creek which is contributing to the flooding. City Officials Say the water from the Anderson Reservoir will continue pour down the spillway meaning coyote creek will continue to rise. And the flooding could get worse. With the mandatory and voluntary evacuations in effect. Several Evacuation Centers sprouted up around the city to hold those displaced by the storm. Evacuees can head to James Lick High School on white road. The Roosevelt Community center on santa clara street. The shirakawa Community Center on lucretia avenue. Evergreen Valley High School is also a standby location. Kron fours Spencer Blake is standing by live at James Lick High School where evacuees have been arriving in large groups. Spencer what can you tell us . Those large groups are coming by the bus load. A few of those shelters you mentioned are short term shelters set up by the city, but james lick high is an aovernight shelter that the red cross is in charge of. Cots are set up inside the gym there. City buses have been bringing evacuees from the other Evacuation Centers to this one. People had the clothes on their backs and what little they could carry. I was up in chico at the Evacuation Center during the oroville dam scare, and the difference with these evacuees is that many of them have already seen their homes and cars destroyed by the flood waters. A lot of them already know the headache and heartache they have to sort through when things dry up. Theres space for just over 200 people to spend the night here. The red cross has another high school on standby in case they need more bed space. Wed rather have the shelter open, in case people need it rather than having to scramble to open it. So we want to make sure that, if we can, the shelters open, people have a warm, safe place to come to. For interested volunteers, the best thing the red cross says you can do in the long run, is make donations to the red cross. A lot of these people have little clothing with them, or awet clothing with them, so the Salvation Army has been bringing in rackfulls of clothes throughout the afternoon. Of course, theyll be helping to serve three warm meals a day here, as well. We dont know yet how long people will need to stay here. Live in san jose, Spencer Blake, kron four news.
