valley. and the return flow is still delayed. and trouble getting the ocean cooled air over the hills. but as we show this morning warm in spots as we start the day with plenty of 60s on the board and even some areas where it is 70 degrees. and half moon bay for a high. and 82 in redwood city and 90 in cooper and pair of 88s in saint at a clair a and to the east -- santa clara. and we're looking at 80s on the bay, except for maybe oakland at 75. 67 in richmond and livermore at 100 and 100 walnut creek and 101. and going forward, we see double digits return. and down to about 90 degrees sore by the time that we get into sunday and start things off and early next week. how is traffic holding. we're off to a good start and quiet out there. and starting off with a live look at 92. here is a ride across the bridge. so far it is at the limit and no big problems right now. and it will be about 15 minutes to get from 880 to the 101 connector. how about the richmond bridge, 585 west. a nice ride into the north bay and 8 minutes to 101. 80s quite eight and 101 quiet. and the golden gate bridge no problems coming from the north bay. it will be less than 25 minutes for the southbound drive that is the commute direction to the left to the toll plays saturday -- plaza to the san francisco side. and the fatal accident in sunnyville, all lanes open to the onramp to 237 east. and it looks good from 880 to 101. and leaving the south bay heading to the peninsula, in case you have to use northbound 101 from sunnyville from 237 to the 92 connector. a quick 16 minutes. 4:49. breaking news. we're following the story out of southern california where one officer died and one is in surgery following a shooting in san diego. we have video of the scene. the police said it happened around 11:00 last night. it has not been confirmed what led to the shooting. we are hearing that the reports from the local immediate where a manhunt underway for the suspect in an earlier shooting. as that drag net goss closer and closer to the -- got closer and closer to the suspect, he opened fire. one officer died and the second officer in surgery and one suspect in custody but they may be searching for others. we will follow more on this and this comes as officers around the country are on alert following the killings of officers in dallas. so we'll continue to follow this story for you. let's head to the east bay. in concord, they have identified body of a man found on the side of the road. they have identified him as frank fernandez on bay point. they confirmed that he was dead but said there. but no big problems. foster city is a good ride for you. 101 across the golden gate bridge is still nice and smooth in and out of san francisco, less than 20 minutes to get in there, that's a good ride. highway 4, is oak for now. 13 minutes from antioc conconcord. less than 30 minutes to get from tracey out to the dublin interchange. no big problems there for 570 west. there is a crash in palo alto and up to sunniville that drive only 18 minutes. a look at our current numbers, temperature wise we are at 60 for fairfield. over most of the bay, it is in the 50s. upper 50s cover the east bay shore line. it is pretty much the same program we have been talking about. this will be changing for the weekend. 100 will be revisited. along the east bay shore line, some 70s and 80s, maybe some 60s possible. here is the cooling happening, not a lot of progress until we get past midnight. we started today off on a mild note, so it is bound to be repeated. the high-pressure is weakening that caused this heat up. and that will allow temperatures to retreat this weekend. some moisture is starting to bubble up on the back side of this high and that could produce some thunderstorms in tahoe and it may spark off some fires too with lightning. half bay moon at 7 it. 83 for mountain view and 88 for san jose. this is largely a 60s and 70s story for oakland. around 101 san rumoan and brutally attacked. >> reporter: this woman has road rash all over her body from being dragged by her car. she also has been in her stomach from being punched and kicked by her attacker. she noticed her car was stolen, then a day later, she started pressing the clicker for her car and found it a few locks an away. she tried to drive away when a man came out of a nearby house and attacked her. >> i was on the ground outside the car and the car door is open, and i'm standing by the car door and he is putting the car in rufshs with thedoor open, so i'm falling on my face, going backwards and i was stuck to something tht car and i was dragged. he turns and he rolls over my thigh with my car. >> reporter: the victim says while this was happening, the suspect was threatening her. >> if you don't get out of this car, i'm going to shoot you, he said that twice. >> this wife or girlfriend decided to get in and help him and pushed my mom o car. >> reporter: soon after the car was stolen, the thief found the hand bag in the trunk and went on a shopping spree, buying groceries and getting a car wash. she was caught on surveillance camera at one store. by then, the cards were canceled and he gave up. >> i'm paranoid, i have a daughter myself, i'm on the look out, i'm going to put cameras up at her place and make sure that it is secured now and i'm going to make sure this doesn't california, a woman arrested for smuggling $160,000 worth of crystal meththroughout the airport. the custom anks said the woman appeared nervous and was singled out for an inspection after arriving from mexico. police found a hidden compartment in her suit full of drugs. well a college has canceled plans to have a play about the attack in san bernardino. it was supposed to be performed this fall, but relatives say the play was in bad taste. the president of the college wrote a letter saying the play would be canceled and apologized for any pain that would have caused. it will be next week before we learn the identities of the people who were killed in a small plane crash. the plane crashed wednesday afternoon as it tried to land at an airport in colombia, california. the plane veered left and erupted in flames. investigations are underway for what caused the crash. safety concerns in one city after a man tried to kidnap a woman in broad daylight. how a good samaritan was bay looks lower 70s. the beaches will stay much the same in the 60s. and this morning, pope francis is in poland, visiting augswits. he is paying tribute to the victims of the hall cost who were sent to concentration camps during world war 2. he is the third consecutive pontiff to make the trip to the camps. police have arrested two people in connection with an armed robbery case. two men were involved with a robbery around free mont. this is the third roby in that neighbor. robbers fled in a white van. police spotted the van and tried to pull it over, but the driver led police on a chase. the vehicle was stopped, one man ran away and another was stopped. police were able to arrest the man who ran away last night. and people in connecticut will take a look at elementary school that will be built to replace the sandy hook school. sandy hook was torn down. the new school was built on the property and will open next month, but there will be an open house today. the superintendent hopes that letting the public see the school now will make it easier for when school starts next month. and police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a woman in broad daylight. this happened just before 8:00. police say a man parked his car and then tried to violately kidnap a 23-year-old woman who was walking to work. it could have ended badly hadn't been for a good samaritan. >> the man pepper sprayathize woman and drags her. a person passing by stops and intervenes, he was pepper sprayed as well. >> the police released this sketch of the person they are looking for, between 25 and 40 years old, five foot ten inches tall, 180 pounds, he was seen driving a silver four door sedan. and it has been over two months since the san francisco police department got a new interim police cleef. several shootings have shaken the public's trust in the police. we had a chance to sit down with the interim chief. he says changes are starting to roll out that should build up the trust with stories this morning. >> one of two san diego police officers that was shot last night has died. police have not said whawhat sparked the violence. one suspect has been arrested and police are searching for others who may have been involved. and a deadly shooting in the area of williams and sherman street. officers responded and found that one man had been shot and that person died at the scene. police at this point say they have no motive yet. and hillary clanten in the official democratic nominee. she now heads out to ohio and pennsylvania. and we have a check on the commute. >> an overturned truck is still blocking two lanes of traffic in palo alto. they issued a traffic alert for this, but it is not causing a huge back up, it is more of a visual sdrakz. south 101 at oregon expressway. the tow truck is on the way, the two right lanes are closed and no mageder laze on the opposite side northbound. it is fine coming into alto from san jose. checking in on bart, there was some track maintenance between balbowa and daly city. once again, the track maintenance between those two points balbowa park aly city. and heading into san francisco, the traffic has a little back up stretching out to the 880 crassing. the rest of the bay area is fine and quiet. no big problems for 680 south. and less than ten minutes out of san jose to get to 45. you can see all the fog and the low lying clouds greeting us. we will see a repeat peance again tomorrow on that note. it will go away quickly today. but more coverage tomorrow and by 10 p.m., you can see east bay and up to the north bay a little bit and coming down to the bay as well. overnight it looks it will be the same. we are still looking at the 60s in the east bay, 61 at san jose and 63 for san francisco. the warm up will be inland close to 100. some cooler numbers starting to be found on the shore line. then the cool down tonight is delaid over the hills again waiting for the cool down it will be after midnight that it filters into some of the valleys. again, our high is weakening and on the back side of it, it may spark off some thunderstorms. 62 for san francisco and that will be problematic with some lightning too. daly is at 62. 98 for concord and danville will be there too. we will see 90s as we head onto the weekend and by sunday, it is a little better and that will be how we start the first week of august. traffic on the bay bridge is still a big problem with drivers getting stuck in traffic almost every day, people are sitting in their cars for more than an hour. >> and we have a look at what is being done to try to get commuteers to ditch the cars. >> reporter: planning the commute can take the better part of your day if travelling between the east bay and san francisco. so the transportation commission approved 40 million to ease traffic jams on the bridge. >> people can at least have some sort of an improvement to their daily life. we know we can't solve the problems of congestion, but we can make a few improvements. >> reporter: some people are already enjoying taking the bus rather than the dart. >> it is fast because the bus can take the commuter lane, so i get here less than 40 minutes in the morning. >> reporter: there will be other incentives as well, moreies operating longer hours. >> i have taken it when the bus was not an option and it is a good choice. >> reporter: there will also be cameras installed at entrances to catch violators. although some prefer to stay in the drive's seat. >> i would rather sit in the traffic in the comfort of my own car rather than sit with some stranger. >> 20 million of it is funded by the federal government. start toog night, caltranis shutting down interstate 880 and oakland working on the 9th avenue over as we will this weekend but there's cool down and we will have that coming up. more breaking news out of south bay san jose police department is investigating a deadly shooting in the area of willow and sherman streets. here's video from earlier this morning showing officers on the scene. the shooting happened after 10 last night. police responded and found one man who was shot next to the white mercedes. he died at the scene. police tell kron 4 averi harper they believe the victim was running after the gunman when the shooting fired at the victim. police tell us that this appears to be a robbery gone bad and at this point no one has been arrested. averi will have a live report with new information from san jose at 6:30. tonight we reached a milestone in our nation's march towards a firefighters have contained a -- boost contain manet. the fire broke out a week ago and is burning in the area between carmel and big sur sending smoke towards pch. it burned 46 square miles and they buffed containment from 10 to 15% more homes lost. 41 homes and 10 outbuildings have been destroyed. there's 2,000 structures threatened and firefighters expect to be on the scene for the next two weeks. they hope to find cooler temperatures this weekend that could help get the upper hand on the fire. and we have now learned the name of the man who is killed while fighting the fire in monterey county. 35-year-old robert alver reagan iii he was killed tuesday while operating a bulldozer that rolled over while he was battling the flames. investigators are trying to figure out what happened exactly. he had been hire through a private contractor a help and leaves behind two children. in southern california firefighters are making good progress fighting sand fire that burned 59 square miles and the new containment number is pretty positive. it's up to 65%. 18 homes have been destroyed in the fire. almost all the evacuation orders and road closures that were in place have now been lifted this morning. closer to home a man accused of shooting at an oakland police sergeant who was trapped in her patrol car after an accident is behind bars after five day manhunt. s.w.a.t. team members and police arrested the man early yesterday morning in stockton. police say the manholeed up with the 3 -- the map holed up with the three young children when office arrived to arrest him. he refused to surrender for several hours. in the end he gave himself up and the children were not hurt. police have not released the man's name. initial incident happened on saturday night after a police sergeant hit another car responding to call. a man came up on the accident scene and fired a shot at the sergeant. luckily missing her but striking the vehicle. police say the motive was violence against police. meanwhile four reputed gang members are behind bars in connection with a deadly shooting in east oakland but a 5th is on the run. police are look for 23 kwr0er8d tyrone anthony terrell who is believed to have ties to berky and sacramento. four other suspects were arrested and charged murder. a bay area grandmother hit and dragged by her own car. see what led up to from -- under 25 minutes from tracy to dublin and stop and go from north 101 in pocket so from 85 leaving south san jose through downtown and up to237 in sunnyvale that is not bad. 3 1 minutes. >> man in modesto after 5 at a costco with 300 people inside. several 911 calls from employees and customers aboutr made reporting a man inside the costco with a knife. authorities are not sure what led to the shooting but a large number of law enforce ament officers were on the scene investigating last night. a vendor inside the store saw the corrections officer approach the man and he said the died. >> and this morning the police chief says the second officer is expected to survive and that officer was left released from the hospital and left moments ago after surgery. >> police are not accident in the backup happening on south 101 in palo alto a truck flipped over around 1 a box truck. the driver is okay but they are waiting for tow truck to get out and upright and clear the truck jose. >> averi harper is at the san jose police department with new details on what happened. averi. >> reporter: yeah. investigators cleared the scene of the shooting within the past hour. and they believe that this could be a robbery gone bad. look at the scene earlier when police were there at willow and sherman streets around 10 last night. the investigation centered around the white mercedes benz you see in the video. police say they believe the victim who they will identify as a male was shot outside the vehicle. they he believe he was running after the suspect when theshooter turned around and fired. they don't have any suspects in custody at this time. so the person who is responsible is still on the loose. now i am told this area is notorious for gang violence and prostitution. no word if that is connected to this incident. but police are still searching for that shooting and asking anyone with any information to give them a call. back to you. >> all right thanks averi. and a warning for women in the east bay. police are look for a man who tried to kidnap a woman in the middle of the day in san leandro. it happened yesterday on washington avenue near halcien drive a man parked the car and tried to kidnap a 23-year-old woman who was talking to work. officers say the incident would have ended badly if not for a good samaritan. >> the suspect either pepper sprays or maces her and knocks her to the ground and starts to drag her by her feet towards his car. a good samaritan was driving by stopped to intervene as he attempted to get her into the car. and the good samaritan was pepper sprayed or maced as well. >> san leandro police releasing the sketch between 20. 25 and 40 about 5 foot 10 and 165 to 180 pound and seen driving a silver four-door nissan. police say man who was found dead along willow pass road in concord this week had been hit by a car that fled the area. the victim was 28-year-old frank fernandez. he lived in bay point and his body was found shortly afternoon on wednesday. police are now investigating his death as a hit-and-run. they believe it happened sometime between 2:30 in the morning and 12:20 in the of noon when he was found. face heavy traffic and sitting in the traffic for hours but there could be help on the way. mtc approved 40 million dollars for a project that's intend to alleviate congestion. they say the goal is to get more pool across the bay bridge in a shorter amount of time and plan to make improvements to the bart system in the future. for now the mtc is dedicated funds to give commuters more reasons to carpool. >> people can can at least have some sort of improvement to the daily life we can't solve congestion in the bay area but we can make improvements to make it better for some people. >> and the official plan to slow traffic cameras at bay bridge carpool entrance to discourage so i lators. caltrans will shut down both directions of the interstate 808 in oakland during the overnight hours. they will work on the 29th abavenue overcrosses. -- avenue overcrossing. they will erect the beam and northbound lanes are going to be closed between high street and 23rd avenue starting at 11 at night until 5 in the morning on week nights. southbound lanes will be closed between embarcadero and 29th starting at midnight and reopening again at 5 in the morning. and bart is going to launch a rewards program to get people to ride during nonpeak hours. they received a grant to try out the program. it would reward ryeers with -- riders with cash. the program requires people to register and have a clipper card and pai pay pal account and you earn points riding during nonpeak hours and can redeem the points for prizes or spain wheel and win a bigger prize. it will start within the next few weeks. and don't forget the balboa park bart station and the tracks will be between glen park anddaley city station will be closed this weekend first of 7 closures over the weekend that they will
