Gwen if Hillary Clinton ever thought the march to the democratic president ial triumphal would be a unimpeded one, the month of august has proved that so. Atically not vermont senator Bernie Sanders attracting crowds coast to coast, questions of her email day, viceog her every President Joe Biden is opening considering the option of challenging her himself and every one of the republicans competing for the g. O. P. Inflation have her in her in theirve sights. For that, she has a response. Theary clinton who watched republican debates a few weeks ago . 17 candidates all trying to other in their ideological purity. Either oblivious to how their ideas would hurt people or interested. Gwen clinton was in minneapolis today, along with other candidates, wooing democrats at the partys summer meeting. Hillary clinton in 2008, i got of votes but i didnt i so it get enough delegates think its understandable that my focus will be on delegates as votes this time. The same old same old will work. The people of our country that, given the collapse of the american middle not need more orablishment politics establishment economics. Gwen dan balz is there tonight in minneapolis. Is clinton simply working to box the candidates out . Dan well, this is obviously a time of real uncertainty within the democratic party. The email issue continues, as you said, to dog her. There are democrats who are nervous about that. They dont think shes handled it particularly well. Today to do two things, i think, at the summer meeting. One was to show that she can rally the party, and to really take the fight to the republicans. Delivered a very strong speech that got, not surprisingly, a strong response from this audience. The other thing she was doing, to, was, she is in essence, flex her muscles to show that this on winnings the eye the nomination as a signal to Bernie Sanders or Vice President else, that she is going to be a very tough competitor, no matter the challenger. Walk intoming her that room today was a little shemphal in its way, is assembling behind the scenes the Organizational Support you need to, as i said, box people out . Or to put peoples concerns to rest . Combination of a both. Frankly, this is an ideal her. Nce for this is the Democratic National committee. This is party insiders. Knows many personally and many are partial to her. Signedrg reported shes up about 400 of the super delegates, the people who seat at they get a convention, elected officials and members of the d. N. C. Yesterday, before everybody really arrived, the campaign put the work about all they have done in the four early states to show that they are they need to do to win the primary, not to take anything for granted, as she today. Thats part of what shes doing. Theyre clearly cognizant of the this stuffheres all swirling around, whether it is the concern about the emails, about Vice President biden possibly getting into it. Thatruthfully, the energy senator sanders is generated on the campaign trail. All of that is the background to making her campaign as focused as they are on doing the heranical things and also showing that shes got the spirit, the spunk, the fight to really do what she needs to do win the nomination. Gwen let me turn to carol lee at the table in washington. To Washington Week, by the way. The long shadow that dan alluded long shadows, but the one this week is joe biden. Where does that stand . Carol hes seriously considering it. Theres a lot of deliberations phone calls from people around biden, even the Vice President himself, to democratic donors and potential supporters. But hes not expected to make a more weeks. Several theres a number of factors that hes considering as he does that. Can he raise the money. Want does he have the staff . Will he be able to pull the talent . Hillary clinton has brought most of the big democratic talent on team. And theres the family issue. The Vice President and his family are going through a difficult time right now and i think it would be a mistake to overestimate how for him. Nt that is he spoke on a Conference Call members this week. Call, doing an iran called out the iran deal and he length1th about about the difficult decision. Things thatre two make me think first i thought this wouldnt happen but there two things that made me think, maybe. The conversation with Elizabeth Warren and we know about the contents of this phone call, someone onhat call was interested in getting out. And that we knew about his president nch with the where they left the impression that the president didnt object. Thats three things. Makes me think that maybe theres something to this. Carol there is something to the fact that the people around theyre doing nothing about all theo quell discussion about him as a potential candidate so theyre the veryt and at least, theyre not trying to put an end to it, which they could single phoneh one call to reporters saying this is not a genuine thing. If Vice President biden does run, how does he distinguish clinton . Ver Hillary Carol i was talking with some were talking to him be part of his message would your problems, the american peoples problems and their hopes and dreams and anxieties that ive lived this and im still living this. The difference between Joe Biden Clinton is that he has really, by washingtons standards, has maintained he does not have a lot of money, he make a lote out to of money and thats part of his big case that, he is one of those voters. Dan, can i ask you in minneapolis, what was the reception to the man who wasnt there, joe biden . How did that audience react or indicate any interest in joe biden in absentia . Dan weve talked to a lot of people over the past few days about this. Is talk about the Vice President possibly running but i did not get a sense that there is a ground swell of enthusiasm joe, run. N, people very much like him, as we all know. He is well respected in the party. People love him in a personal way. Theyre very sympathetic to him right now becausof what hes going through after the death of biden. , bo the but i did not come away with the feeling that this audience, particular, was hungering to have him in the race. I think everybody realizes if he were to get into the race, it would shake it up. Hes the sitting Vice President , hes a substantial figure and as has a message i think he feels he could deliver. But in terms of people being ready to peel away from secretary clinton, you didnt get that feeling in the conversations with people here, did i getet a sense these are Party Leaders get a sense yet hes done a lot personally to make calls to reallyin key states to sound them out. Obviously, some of his people are doing that but its not hes how much of that done. Gwen dan, let me ask you about two other candidates in bernieolis today sanders and Martin Omalley who came to poke a stick in the eye of the democratic party. Bernie sanders going to the to rage against the establishment and Martin Omalley saying there should be debates, let us debate. How did that go over . A much turned out to be more interesting dynamic today than we thought. Normally this is an event in come, theyandidates give their speeches, they all pretty much get a good reception does a little applause meter assessment of who did the best. But what happened was, secretary former govern chafee spoke in the morning, then game then sanders and both surprised people with the the committee sitting a few weeks away, really taking on the decision they made to limit debates six sanctioned debates and only four start toe early states went ie really think we were all surprised at how hard he went after that decision. A reason. He has hes trailing behind everybody buthe needs more visibility it was a real shot at the Party Establishment and then came senator sanders who has an antiestablishment message, and both cases, it was clear what they and who they were talking about. Martin omalley basically said is rigged instem favor of clinton and sanders basically said, he thinks he can generate the kind of enthusiasm the party will need to bring out turnout in november 2016 and he clearly has doubts secretary clinton can do that so it was without direct attacks, were direct attacks going on today. Gwen carol . Carol did the Hillary Clinton selecting of her well oiled campaign, the super delegates memos this week, does that have any chance of potentially backfiring in the that one of the knocks against her was what you were hering about in terms of being accused of rigging the debates and the inevitability factor. You could understand why she might be doing that this week with the Vice President considering jumping in, but can that backfire with some voters . Possible. I think from their vantage point, its an effort to reassure the party that theyre a smarter campaign in way than last time. In the last campaign she ran obama, she didnt a very bad job of figuring out a delegate strategy and as a result, barack obama is now president and i think she wants realize, and her Campaign Team definitely wants people to realize, that they are it foring to take granted, that they are doing the iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina and nevada, that they are working theyuper delegates, that are being diligent about all those things they didnt do before. Idea of thehave an timing for joe bidens decision . Carol the end of summer. The end ofpecting by september theres some talk that it could slip but that doesnt seem gwen here we thought it was labor day but no. Stay warm orthere, hot or whatever it is in minnesota. An well see you when you get washington. Dan thanks, gwen. Gwen and then there was, is ever be donald trump. He picks new fights, called into more talk shows, insulted other candidates and continued to lead poll. Late summer here is part of his exchange with univision anchor, jorge was first ejected, then invited back into a trump press conference. Topic was immigration policy. Jorge are you going to bring army . Mr. Trump well do it in a humane fashion. A bigger heart than you do. I want them to come back and get becometation so they legal. Gwen of course, jorge ramos him on deportation policy. Michael scherer sat down with thistime cover and spent time considering the secret of his success. The answer is . Being a hes better as candidate that republicans want to hear from than anyone else on the stage. Come across as more authentic, hes more angry, hes bolder, hes sticking it to the elites that many in the Republican Party are upset about. We learned this summer is bet Old Tea Party energy can nonideological. Ideologue, hes not even a conservative. Theres a poll that says, donald both withben carson, no political experience, has 40 of the vote in the Republican Party, which is more than scott walker, jeb bush and marco rubio. You were scott walker, jeb bush, marco rubio, 10 you break through this . Michael talking to those sayaigns, they will something along the lines of we have to ride it out because theyre powerless right now. Cant take him on directly because donald trump has more free air time than they do. Monopolizing cable news every day and hes better at people than they are. Gwen did he insult you . Michael he did not insult me. He was nice to me. Whenever a reporter talks to trump, theres always the threat. He makes clear the threat, like, dont write a good article about me, the tweet is coming. I think he was happy enough to of timecover magazine, that i got a pass. About thee talking tea party and donald trump this week is partnering up, announced anotherpartner up with insurgent president ial cruz, to hostator or i guess participate in an deal rally in washington, d. C. Whats in his mind about partnering up with another candidate . L gwen whats in cruzs mind . My mother used to call it enemies closer. Michael for ted cruz, ted cruz, his whole campaign plan, before trump arrived on the scene, was ofcapture the same sort antiestablishment anger trump is capturing so from the saidning, cruz has not anything negative about trump, outrageoushis most statements, cruz will say, i think its great donald trump is in the race. Tocruz wants to get close trump on the bet that as we get closer to an election, voters will start thinking about who the oval office, not just who they want to tell pollsters theyre happy about now and some of that support will go to cruz. For trump, hes trying hard to something hes never shown before which is he can handle the statesman job. Hes not a statesman. Hes a celebrity, hes a real a greatagnate, hes performer on tv, hes a Reality Television character but hes out white papers even though theyre thread bare his plans. Etail and hes been trying to moderate some of his corners. Think hes happy to be standing next to a senator on capitol. Carol you were talking about the other candidates having to wait this out. How long do you think theyll have to do that . Michael i dont think anyone knows. Betting money was this was the summer of jump. He said, i hope its not the trump but i hope its the autumn of trump when we got to september 23 or whatever, would start to peter out. I think a lot of candidates would love for that to happen. I think the reality is right now were in a free media stage in this campaign and trump dominates the free media. Gwen the reality that people who support him so far dont hes proposing, if its doable or meetsee conservative tests. Building a wall that might raise your taxes, thats not exactly orthodoxy but theyre ok with that . Michael no ones really analyzing the details of his plan much. I dont think his supporters, when you talk to him, they say he tells it like it is. They dont get into what it is. With jorge ramos, he says im more humane than you. Hes talking about taking 11 Million People living here and forcing them out of the country and hes calling it humane and yet to detail how he does that, whether its buses or trains or everybody gets in their own car to drive across the border. Really, trumpint, is really on the surface. Under hes winning the pose and his pose is matching the fury of a lot of republican voters. Gwen a pose many other candidates wish they could figure out but havent yet. While the candidates compete to succeed him, president obama is presumablyacation, tanned, rested and ready to complete the rest of his agenda. List, rounding up the remaining votes he needs to beat back a challenge to the iran agreement. Today he made the pitch again in a webcast sent to American Jewish leaders. President obama i would suggest that in terms of the tone of debate, everybody keep in israel. T were all pro pro u. S. Israel and we donto make sure we impugn peoples motives. The at no point have i suggested a warmonger. Gwen whats different than from is hee said before suggested that maybe people wanted war. Now hes saying, you know what, family here. It was an interesting indication of how much more confident the white house and the president together they are post labor day expectation, congress coming back. 30y know we now have senators who have stepped forward and said they are supporting the iran deal. Means that theyre four away from being able to support the president s veto if it comes to that. Republican Senate Leader and other republicans talking about maybe this is not going to go. From tennessee whos been leading the charge to that maybe the deal, they dont have enough votes to do this. Theres even talk about maybe theres enough tricks up senator reeds sleeve that the republicansaa republicans might not be able to have cloture to take it to the next step so the president came person who confident shifted talk from the apoplexy this how can you not see deal, you must be for war, to were a family and were going to mend our rifts and were to move on and he predicted it would happen meaning with the. Riends michael does that confidence extent into other policy areas . As he term ise coming up, hes becoming more confident and bold and more hesrtable with the role playing. Alexis one of the things that i noticeableeen working at the white house and covering the white house is the some lessons put to use. He did that with the trade deal, making alliances with republicans. Hes done that insideout game more artfully. Tos certainly applied that the iran deal, trying to promote it. The white house was joking that webcast was the last possible option to communicate that they had not employed yet and they would do it. In other words, theyve tried to educate in every possible way. Think to observers its been pulling things together and understanding a little bit more dynamics of congress. The president is about to shift gears to focus on climate legacy item for the remainder of the fall and into the end of the year. That is much more of an executive Authority Initiative legacy hes using through regulatory means and executive power. Becausening to congress he Knows Congress would block that and the courts will, too. Carol do you get the sense that the president is trying to pack of his final legacy things in the last few months he knows that the spotlight is completely going away from the white house . You have climate change. Deal. Ve the iran hes going to have some budget fights. Forward a new guantanamo close bay. Alexis the president calls it his bucket list in some ways. Of going to alaska, where hell be going this coming week, theyre celebrating that as the first sitting president arctic. Visit the this is his list and he is saying, i want to fulfill the promises i made to the electorate in 2008. Gwen is there any state he hasnt hit yet . I think this may be the last one. Alexis yes, he did. Gwen thank you, everybody. We have to go for now.
