KQED PBS NewsHour Convention Coverage July 26, 2016

Join with us,r happen together and win the [music playing]nr good evening and welcome to our special npbs news hournprc coverage of the Democratic National conventioncoth inxdnr philadelphia im judy woruff. And im gwen ifill, joining us as . ; they did t last week i leave land across the0l arena . Podium nprs rachel re, and in the anchor booth with us is mark shields andw3 new york re columnist, davidnihtxd brooks. And me havep, along with amyq havei]ni john yangnir congressional reporter, susan davis. Thee1 democrats roled intoe1 p1 but not without some controversy. We will get to all that tonight along with speakers after this break. H q thats quite frankly, many of them would have liked to have seen her on the vicepresident doorbell stage instead of tim caine. An Bernie Sanders will give us a sense of how this is going but i bumped into david and he said it takes a long time to get over this, this campaign has gone a long time, he went all the way through california, there are a lot of folks who are in that mood and in that mode and thats what is next for these next four days are going to show us. The polling shows us something different, it came out with 90 of bernie supporters saying than they are going to vote for Hillary Clinton but this is a different venue. Mark shields, im sure if we rewracked the tape to last monday night you would have found us around the table talking about how dizzy organized the Republican Party was. Yes. Clew land went off and the democrats are skinsed theyre going to do the same thing. A week ago democrats were e feeling quite superior, that the republicans had this civil war and an leper colony going on, and that script hasnt been lost i would have to say that most i have talked to feel home sick for cleveland. Philadelphia is a beautiful cit but it is a mess to get to and from and in and out of the convince hall and i think that that is contributes to part of the fractionness and general unhes. The other point i would make is a lot of these sanders people when he began he was 655 behind when you are getting delegates to fill out a slate youre not getting the county chairs, the senate senators, youre getting people who are true believers, who arent pragmatists, and thes are not used to this whole process of, okay, amy has more votes therefore im going to support her, even though she is to the right of the atilla the e huhn. Amy is down on the floor with a sanders delegate. Lets talk to her, susan. Im on the floor with seth burner, he is a maine delegate and he supported bernie in the primary, are you ready to put your support behind hillary il clinton . Thats not a decision i have to make yet, its several months off and i will wait until we geu there th but Bernie Sanders said he wants his supporters to get s behind Hillary Clinton, why isnt that good enough . Because im not supporting a candidate, im supporting issues. He may feel Hillary Clinton is c the right person right now but i might disagree with that so if my support of issues calls for me to look elsewhere at lisa for now then thats what ill do . What do you see your options as . Again, i dont need to make a decision for november right now. The next vote that i have to cast will be wednesday and it will be for Bernie Sanders, what i do after that will depend on the condition. I can say that stopping trump is very important to me, but the best way to do that may depend on what has developed between now and then what do you say to your Democrat Friends who say a vote not for hillary is a vote for donald trump . That may be what it looks like now, if i get closer to november i may agree more strongly. But i dont think its healthy to be forced into making a commitment . July for what youre going to do in november. Many of the super delegates where going to put hillary over the top made their decisions ns over a year ago before the fbi probe came out and before wiki leakswi came out and revolutiono that she isnt a strong campaigner. I dont know that anything like that will happen between now and november but if it does, i should be free to respond fat. As you can see, judy, a lot of delegates feel like that on the floor. Th he said maybe i will be rey to support Hillary Clinton but maybe not. Well, maybe not and we learned a lot of things today, first f all, Bernie Sanders isnt a democrat hes an independent and a social list and Bernie Sanders doesnt haveh control over his own supporters, today when he spoke to a group of them and he said we live in the real world now its time to support Hillary Clinton to have in order to stop donald trump, big round of boos, he sent an email as a personal courtesy to me please no protests or disruptions on the floor, no, we heard whenever Hillary Clintons name came up, a big ruined of boos. Im interested tonight to see what he says, does it have an affect, and can elizabeth re change anything . We want to go to the floor to listen to astrid silva, and i had the opportunity to go to nevada and interview her aa couple of months ago and talk to her about her support for Hillary Clinton. Lets listen. I finally graduated from nevada state college. [applause] my family and i are here because of people like senator harry reed. Who put themselves in our shoes and helped us. While president obamas immigration action protected me, we live in constant fear that my parents could be taken away from their grandson, noah so when donald trump talked about deporting 11 Million People hes talking about ripping families apart, separating families like mine and carlas. Hillary clinton understands this is not who we are as a country. I have seen her comfort children like carla who are scared that they might lose their parents to deportation. I know she will fight to keep ke our families together. I know she will now were going to go down to the floor where nprs rachel re is standing by with one of Bernie Sanderss earliest supporters. Et cetera thats right, gwen, im here with u. S. Senator merkley, the only senator to come out and support Bernie Sanders, what has been your message to the convention. To advance the vision that bernie put forward we need to follow his lead and Work Together in partnership and unit to make sure that our democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton is c elected in november. Mb a lot of people ive talked to say this isnt about Bernie Sanders the man, its about a movement he started and they dont like being told by the party elders that its time to get in line. Thats right its a grass s Roots Movement and people are kind of their hearts are broken that bernie didnt win and now theyre wrestling with how to advance the ideas that they really care about to make sure that we tackle Global Warming aggressively, that we take on living wage jobs, expand Social Security. How do we do these things . As bernie has indicated the best way to do them is to weave them into the dna of the party, weave them into Hillary Clintons campaign and hes worked well to make that happen and thats the path forward that i think will take us back to our goals. Senator jeff merkley, back to you. Thank you, joining us is new york city mayor, bill de blasio. Will have you have endorsed Hillary Clinton, whats going on in your party right snow i feel fine about our party right now, look, i think we had a substantive debate in the mott and i think the progressive wing of the party made an impact on the partys platform, certainly on Hillary Clintons platform and the partys platform and i think its important because people want to see equality income addressed and they want to see this party get to the point organically. Ic i think there is going to be plenty of unit, i dont mistake the immediate frustration today which is as a result of the leaks and legitimate frustration from the larger effort we made over the months to bring people into an alliance and shared effort to win the white house, im convinced that will happen p we just heard from a delegate on the floor who was wearing a crocheted beer can hat and he was more interested in the th issues rather than the candidate, and you helped to lead the occupy movement and it reminds me of that. I think occupy with all of its challenges had a huge impact on the decisions made around the country and indicates how much more could be done if a coherent movement had come out of it. To bernies credit to see a fundamental change emerge, it will an mate the Democratic Party and its not at all inconsistent with electing g Hillary Clinton president , hillarys platform is from my point of view the most progressive in decades, raisingi minimum wage, higher wages and benefits, taxing the wealthy, these are the kinds of things that we progressives have waited to see inha a platform and now they are. Lets see aey movement that sustains that and achieves thost policy changes were talking to new york city mayor, bill de niblasio. Our city relies on trade and head comparts, isnt the platform policies a disaster for new york city . No, the Energy Behind opposing pdp comes from as a result of nafta and the whole thing is constructed around and existing a status quo thats not acceptable, its going to reinforce the concentration of r wealth and power that we have in this country. I think youre going to see a vibrant movement to stop that. New york city is doing quite well without that trade agreement, i think we can all agree, a diverse economy often we can thrive and if there is an going to be a trade agreement they have to be on terms much m more consistently favor able to the American Worker and not involving so much reinforcement of the Corporate Power structure. May or, long before you achieved fame as mayor, you were a Boston Red Sox fan and still are. You ran Hillary Clintons campaign along with rick lasio and rick said afterwards anybody who runs against hillary clintoc ought to be concerned about any allegations of sectionism in the way he comports himself and it would resonate, especially given the Roger Ailes Fox news story, how is a trump clinton race going to come down . I honestly believe the economicnr issues are going to dominate this election, more i than terrorism, more than the historical moment of first woman president and i think the more those issues get dominated the better for Hillary Clinton and women in swing states, a lot of moderates and independent will choose hillary because donald trump is so outrageously sectionist. If Hillary Clinton says there is a problem with sectionism in our country there is. Donald trump uses terminology lightly and in the again attitude he has toward women throughout his career song whatever the indications, the at lack of pay equity, being the sharpest tangible issue besides all symbolism and verbal issues, i think pay quality is being felt by women across the country mr. Mayor we have a questions i want to come back to the unit or lack thereof. This is not what the democratics had planned, they wanted a d contrast to the mess in cleveland and you have hillarys name being booed every time it came up. Why isnt that a problem for democrats . I will be straightforward. Brief answer. Its the first day of a convention after a rather shocking revelation came out and people are getting if out of their system. Sy i think by the time we get to the end of this convention n youre going to see a lot of unit and true die hard bernie rn sanders arent going to give up their unit but i think the majority will give it up and i think that will be evidence by the end of the convention. Mayor bill de blasio, thank h you for joining us. We continue to listen to the he floor and as gwen and mare rah were discussing were hearing occasional boos, whenever Hillary Clintons namee comes u there, more boos. I will be honest, even with luis gutieeerrez, one of the fi brands of congress, i am surprised by the boos, but i understand the anger and the obvious tilt toward secretary Clintons Campaign were going to cut away to the floor, we have jason and jarron collins. co nba players, were going to listen to them. I want my kids to know that an i want them to know that any more than any star athlete the president of the United States is a role model to millions of children. So when it comes to donald trump how do you tell your kids not to be a bully if their president is one . [applause]en how do you tell your kids to respect their heritage, my wife is mexican american, if their president disparages it . How do you tell your daughters, that theirni president reduces women to their physical appearance . My parents, my family, and all the great coaches ive had in my life have taught me the importance of working hard, playing fair, and most importantly the ability to lead and bring people together to accomplish great things. That sounds like Hillary Clinton to me. [applause] now, it is with great pride i introduce the first publicly gay athlete to play in any of the four major sports leagues, my less hand some brother, jason th collins. Thank you, jarron, ill get you back for that one later . My dream was to play in the nba and live my authentic life as a proud gay man at the same time. Chap i was able to accomplish those because of us people who supported me in my life. Before i came out to the world so the cover of Sports Illustrated i came taught to the clinton family. I have known their family for over 20 years. I knew they would accept me for who i was and they would help to pave a path for others to do the same. I am forever grateful for their word their unconditional support. They knew that my Sexual Orientation made no difference r in my ability to play basketball. Just as someones gender makes no difference in his or her ability to lead our nation hillary has defended the lgtb community for years, from cosponsoring the Matthew Shepard crimes prevention act to leading on lgtb human rights and making sure that genders could reflect their true gender as both an African American and a member of the lgtb community the choice for continued progress is clear. This november we must elect Hillary Clinton as our next president. Thank you. As retired nba player Jason Collins managed to get the attention of this unruly audience at the Democratic Convention in a way that a number of other speakers have not yet. Amy walter, there is a differene feel to this Convention Already isnt there . There was disruption and disunit at the Republican Convention last week, how would you describe it . I think david summed it up, democratics have more delegates than republicans do, its 1 billion degrees outside and a little bit hotter in here and it creates a feeling nilike, you know, you can just i think that is spurring on the energy and as well as getting peoples nerves a little bit frayed. But i think what youre seeing e on the program tonight look thit is the message that the Clinton Campaign is counting on which is diversity is the way they win this election, demographics will win this election. They put people up on the stagee who have immigration stories, African American and Sexual Orientation and the message throughout this is going to be that donald trump is aiming his message at ais small group of voters, namely white voters, we are a party thats bigger and frankly, the Clinton Campaign will say thats what elected barack obama as well. I remember there were two episodes in the Republican Convention that mentioned lgtb rights and a representative from silicon valley. That was it. John re i dawn john yang is with the iowa delegation. At im with chris larson from iowa, he was a sanders precinct captain. You thought he gave up too easily . I was disappointed, i thought he gave up before the convention, also that the on minority reports from orlando, i thought they had a term to have potential to have a fight up here, specifically the trade standard, licked her fingers, stuck it up in the air to see which way the wind was blowing and realized sub sentiment was against it and is now opposed to it but herxd representatives in orlando pushed back on specific language regarding the ttp. And now senator sanders is urging party unit and urging you all to support secretary clinton. Im not doing that. I will not vote for Hillary Clinton. I why not . Because its become very clear during this primary seaso that the Democratic Party is ic beholding to its corporate masses. Are you going to vote for donald trump . Ru i will never vote for donald trump. What are you going to do in the fall . I will probably leave that portion of my ballot blank. Other than ttp what more would y
