Once referenced. Today here at fox sports well try to pay tribute to the brave men and women of the u. S. Military who fought to defend us then and continue to this day to fight for us. Come on in here and stay a while, folks. Im curt menefee. Thank you for joining us. And a heart felt thanks to president obama with a tribute to our armed forces and our country. It was 11 years ago that the then senator obama said we are at best when we not be ourselves, as a blue or red america, but the United States of america. In 1941 the attacks on pearl harbor united us as a people more than any single event in history. And no matter your political stripe that is something to remember. And i bring in howie long, jimmy jimmy johnson. Well be here and talk about pearl harbor and reflect on what this week has been like for us. But i want the people at home to see the bottom of screen because youll see names stroll ago cross it. Those are the 2400 people who st their lives here in 1941 and it is a asmall way to tryry and remember them throughout the show. This is a special week for all of us. Andcurt, i want all of our viewers to know, we are honored this morning. In the back drop you see the mighty missouri, the mighty mo, where in 1945 they entered the war, treaty signed right there. It is apretty amazing picture. You cant quite grasp it. Well help people grasping it. In case you are wondering at home here on the base we are between the uss arizona memorial marking the entry into world war ii. And the uss missouri, where japan surrendered marking the end of the war. Jay glazer hanging out next to the missouri right now. Jay, how are you . Od morning. Im great. M flanked by our servicemen and women. And dont think i could have ever have a better back drop to a set out here. And im doing my hits from different locations up there on the uss missouri. It is a huge piece of american and World History as that is where the treaty was signed that in essence began the end of world war ii. Weve done cool things here at fox sports, this is about as cool as it gets. Absolutely. And well have much more on harlem harbor and what pearl harbor. Fox sports salute in hawaii been going on since friday and will continue on tomorrow for the well break it down for you in the kay jewelers headlines. We vited Wounded Warriors at the Medical Center which is the home of the brave. And then we toured with the rear admiral and looked at the still active navy base combined with the nearby home of the air force to form joined base hickam. Harold reynoldsnd m mor League Baseball pitchers joined us, with other hawaiian members to put on the baseball clinic for military members and their families. And then, tomorrow, the first ever pearl harbor invitational will take place. The College Basketball matchup for number eight villanova against knuck six oklahoma. Followed by navy against oregon. Those games will take place at and last night the admiral invited us for a special reception to honor the weekend. We want to thank admiral fuller and everyone who helped us have a very special weekend here. There is the admiral. Thank you for all you have done tor us. Not just in this weekend. But for the commitment, 28 yearr in the navy after graduating from the Naval Academy. Weve been talking football. And weve been able to talk about that. And you see Adrian Peterson getting ready today against the seahawks and then winston trying to get his Tampa Bay Buccaneers into the playoffs. This is the time of the year when everybody looks toward the playoffs and next season. The crucial month, what has impressed you so far about this season. Up to this point, i look back at what weve seen in the nfl and the team most impreive has been the carolina panthers. You say how did they become you look at a great, great defense. Probably the most consistent in the entire nfl. On offense, cam newton has been a great playmaker. People underestimated their wide receivers. They got a great receiver. But cam newton has overcome adverse toyota be undefeated. So the great playmaker on offense and the great defense and an underestimated group of wide receivers. And we probably should have paid a little bit of attention to this off season when Peyton Manning was asked to give back 4 million and after 17 interceptions and a a injury he is on n e bench and there is question about whether he will return as a starter depending on how osweiler does as starting quarterback. That is a shock there as one of the greatest players in the history of the game all of a sudden they may go with the other guy over a gay withuy like peyton i know youre excited. But the mininesota vikings, h he s a team that theyveon seven out of eight. Teddy bridgewater is 60 when he passed for less than 200 yards. But that goes to show how great of a player that Adrian Peterson is. We had questions after missing last season at 30 years old, leading the league in rushing and they are relying on a great defense. So the Minnesota Vikings have been a great position. I dont think we thought they would be in the position they are now. Love them or hate them, they are fascinating. The off season dominat by deflategate and you werent sure if tom brady would be with them the first four games of the suburb and then after win, could they go undefeated and then a loss up in denver. We have no edelman, no gronk, no lewis, amendola is banged up. They are on top of the nfc, could they hang on until the reinforcements come back to hold on to the number one seed. They could go from the number ne seed, which seems like a lock, to the number three seed. Pretty fascinating. It is. It has been a fun season and still a month left before we get to the playoffs. We are sitting here at this somber place but it is also a celebration of americas resiliency. And a lot of what is go about this country. And when you come here, you get both sides of the coin. And we have military personnel and their families joining us for the show. You dont have to be quiet just because it is 6 00 in the morning, okay. Were going to get them excited and try to do the same with you. We have plenty more to come on this special twohour edition of the fox nfl sunday pregame show as we check out the ford150 in pearl harbor. I date that will live in infamy. The war was raging in europe but here in pearl harbor it was a beautiful sunday morning. Some folks were sleeping in and while others were enjoying a gorgeous and serene hawaiian day. At 7 43 a. M. , everything changed. December 7th, 1941, a date which will live in infamy. United states of america was attacked by forces of the empire of japan. Americans wonder how and why this happened the way it d. The big question in history is why werent they prepared . How do you prepare for an enemy that will sail 4,000 miles over the pacific undetected. How do you prepare for that . Well the first phase of the time line on the attack was the launch of the japanese aircraft of 183 aircraft in the first wave and an hour later 1 17 aircrcrt the second waveve and that was to literally make a Surgical Strike on the island of oahu, attacking the airfields first and then attacking pearl harbor and going after the ships. No one had done an air strike of carriers of that number in human for the servicemen that survived the surprise attack on pearl harbor, the memories are vivid images they have carried with themm to this day. I asked many times, what were you doing . I was sitting at my bunk, reading the morning paper. [ inaudible ]. I noticed torpedo plane going by with a big red ball. I looked over toward battleship row and the ships were on the battle wagon and i saw the rising sun, said, my god, those are japanese planes. When they sounded the alarm, man your battle stations, this is not a drill, so we all ran to the battle stations. I went out and we saw the planes. They were they were around the palm trees that you see 171 aircraft and a total of 19 ship ships ships were damaged or completely destroyed. In all, the United States suffered almost 2400 casualties. Never considered myself to be a hero. To me, a hero is all of these people that got killed saving people and trying to do as best they could to serve the United States of america. Being at a certain place at a certain time, you have no control over when you are in the services. And certain things happen and you just do the best you can. You know, none of us were bbn december 7thth, 1941. But yourrad was actually over here right after. After the bombing of pearl harbor. And was on the salvage part. He didnt talk about it much. But he did say, i have a hard time believing what this place looked like. One of the good things though, he did meet my uncle who took him home on leave and introduced him to my mother and two weeks later they got married. So there was some good. And a child was born. Yeah. It was so interesting on the tour that we were fortunate enough to take of the arizona memorial, all of the names of those who were lost are on the wall of the memorial. And i noticed some of the names were the same. And 26 sets of brothers and one father and son were lost on that day. 60 years ago 74 years ago tomorrow. That is on the arizona memorial wall. And you could see across the ttom of your screen, if you lolo there, all of f e names of the 2400 plus people that l lost her lives here at pearl harbor. And that attack actually happened on a sunday. So there are nfl games going on on the mainland during the nfl historian Michael Mccambridge takes us back to that day and how it affected the games long before social media. The largest crowds on december 7th, 1941 were at the three stadium wheres nfl games were being played. The giants were playing the dodgers, one of the players named jam loomis became an nfl players who saw duty and died four years later in iwo jima. There was a good crowd for that game. And the divisional playoff a week later drew more than 40,000 people. But after the bears beat the packers they qualified for the nfnf championship game on december 1. By then the war effort was underway. And they had the sllest amount of people. About the invasion but the 27,000 in attendance did not. So the significance of that game was a series of p. A. Announcements. It was clear something was up. One of the people that were there that day was a young naval officer named john f. Kennedy. There was not a general p. A. Announcement at any of the stadiums informing the crowd that pearl harbor has been invaded. But people left the stadium knowing that something terrible had happened. And sensing that nothing was ever going to be quite the same. And i know there is a different time, but yes, definititly applause. But in my lifetimeme in our lifeime, the 9 11 was another one of those times. We were there i was in new york for that time. And one thing i will say out of the tragedy and all of those things came unification of the country and everybody got together and rallied together. And i think kind of reset everything and i think that was the bright side of what you could look for coming out of pearl harbor and coming out of yes, it is s sad. Sotimes it takes tragedy to unify us as a nation. Hopefully that is not the same thing going forward. Fox nfl sunday, were just Getting Started from our home base here in pearl harbor. As we continue, were back to football and the dog pound. Where fans are in the doug house. Wait until you see the viral videos on cleveland after monday nights pick six and well kick it off after the thursday niit haha mary. The lions may not have a prayer tomorrow fox sports will host two college breast games at pearl harbor in the building originally functioning as a recreat and Community Center for the servicemen and women of pearl harbor. And on the evening prior to the december 7th attack, anvent called the battle of music was held for the United States marines. Following the devastating 1941 attack it was used to create funding to build the uss arizona memorial for the servemen lost that would be remembered forever. In 1978 they had a campaign by hosting an episode of this is your life. Andel advv pressley performed 16 songs and raised over 64,000 for the memorial fund. In order to play the basketball games here on the base, fox sports has restored block arena so it could continueeo host women for tomorrow. And tomorrow night they add another block with the first ever pearl harbor invitational. Two of the Undefeated Teams will go at it. Number eight villanova and numbesix oklahoma. And then navy against oregon. Our Television Coverage begins at 7 30 p. M. Eastern time on fs1. Howie loo is a prrd villanova lum. Both on the football field with guests. Thank you so much. Im so excited to be working the games tomorrow. And i want to introduce everybody from the Naval Academy. Head coach ed dechellis and jay wright and lon kruger from oklahoma. And i want to start with coach dechellis. This is a special weekend for you. What does it mean for the Naval Academy to play at pearl harbor on pearl harbor day tomorrow. It is a special weekend for us. First of all, it is an honor and augustal pearl harbor classic. But our players studied the battle of pearl harbor. And coming here and seeing and touring the base has been very special for them. As you know, in a very short time they will be officers in the most powerful military force in the world. D. And they will d dend and protect our country. Thank you. I like that. That sounded good. [ cheering and applause ] and coach altman, we know that these games are about so much more than basketba. What are you hoping your guys take out of this experience. Well it is an honor for the university of oregon to be here and for our guys to see the servicemen in action. We are visitors tomorrow supposed to be a neutral court. But were looking forward to the chance. Well, t t top priorityyfor eaea one of your programs, one recruiting, two, recruiting, three, recruiting. And if the homes you go into are anything like my house, the moms more often than not make all of the decisions. This goodlooking and welldressed . Well, that is not fair. This is the pride and joy of villanova, right here. Howie long. And so terry knows, he gives a lot of money to the school, too. He is very generous. So last year you had the number one seed going into the tournament. A lot of people are excited about your program and team this year. Give us an overview of where you guys stand. Want to say how proud we are to be a part of this. We appreciate fox inviting villanova to be here. For our guys to honor these great men and women that serve our country, it is nice for us to do be able to do it. And this is a perfect test for us. Because we are pretty good but these guys might be a little bit better and were going to get this early in the season. They are an experienced team. And we have some good guards. These guys have some experienced guards. This is going to be a great battle. So were going to come out of here with a great experience and know where we are nationally after playing oklahoma. Undefeated temperatures, ten ton ton top ten teams. And coach kruger, it is a matchu, but buddy heeled could bring something to the game. He is fantasy. Every day he will score. But then enthusiasm and the emotion and the passion for the game, that affects all of the other guys in practice. It is an honor to be here. And i could say the same thing out jays club that he just saiai about ours. It is a fun game. E. But way beyond in a, the experience of the guys to be here at pearl harbor and to appreciate those before them have done, it is an honor to be here. Thanks for being here. I may know who howie is rooting for tomorrow. Thanks for being here with us. The 92 Arizona Cardinals have a chance to avenge against the rams who they lost to earlier this season. What do you is expect in the sequel today. Rams 24, cardinals, 22. I expect the cardinals to come out and rsonalmer to bombs away and s shock that young rams secondary. I think the c cdinals win. Another nfc west team. The 49ers battle the bears. And you wont believe this but the bears have won three of four and they have a few fans out there i hear. They are a game out wildcard spot. Michael, could they make the playoffs. They will try to make the playoffs with an 03 start since beating the packers in green bay wawa the kick start of something good. I think they have a good shot. And a couple of nfc south teams go at it in tampa. The buccaneers host the falcons who have dropped four in a row. Howie, who do you like in this game and why . Atlanta has stumble. Turn overs, offensive coordinator and matt ryan not on the same page. Were hearing they get freeman back as running back but tampa on defensend Jameis Winston isis growing uppquick so at home, maybe tampa. From the nfc south to the afc north we go. The battle of ohio, between the bengals and the browns. And after atwogame skid, cincinnati bounced back with a win against the rams. They are getting into the playoffs, jimmy. But do you see them getting a firstround bye . In the afc, i think new england will be the number one seed. The number two sese, will be the winner of the cincinnanadenver game, that is played december 28th and i think denver comes out on top. Have the bye. Well the bengals are thinking playoffs, browns fans wouldnt know what that feels like. Particularly after their latest heartbreaker on monday night. And now after losing six in a row, the dog pound is howling. This is for the win. The balal is blocked and they are running with it. This is not happening unbelievable i was beyond angry with everything. After watching them lose so many times in the last minute since theyve been back, it is just demoralizing. As the game went on, you knew there was going to be a way they would blow it. Theyve hit rock bottom. There is only so many times they can they can punchch you into the stomach until you give up. It is a hopeless feeling until you feel like you are drowning forever. We have is sub lime. This year we are back at 99, back to our expansion team. Losing like this constantly, it takes a toll on you. And were i i a quarterback and a half in the season. [ inaudible ]. Jame delhomme, couch, hoyer, Johnny Manziel, davis, virgin winn, that was a high light. We drafted weedon, obviously. Quinn. Kelly holcomb. Who was the guy kind of like jake delhomme, oh, trent dilfer. You will find one. There is no optimism for this team for the rest of the year. Give me a reason i should buy season tickets next year. Theyll find a way to lose any game. Becomes clevelands 24th starting quarterback over 17 seasons. This is a hard one for you. Is it tougher to be a lions fan right now or a Cleveland Browns fan with all of the different quarterbacks every year. You saw the piece, the browns have been losing forever. They left in 95 and came back in 99 and you know who their coach was in the mid90s, going down as the greatest coach in the nfl, excuse me don shula, Bill Belichick was their coach and they fired him. And if you look at the Cleveland Browns, it all comes wn to talent. Well. They dont have a lot of talent on their football team. And the other thing too, everything is such a habit. You get in a habit. Unfortunately with the cleveland losing. Expect to lose. But you have to give more to that logo was probably the highlight. But as a fan, jimmy is right. Expect to losend in dramatic fashion. I thinfor them sometimes it is fun to talk about how they lose. I hav friends that are browns fans and i saw the monday night game they lost and i think they enjoy it for some reason. Oh, no, im used to it. I wont pile it on. It is rough right now. It seems to be on off the field controversy every week. And you talk abobo the lack of talent there. Mike pettine is the hd coach and he is not winning. Do you bring him back as the head coach if he is not winning despite the fact he doesnt have the talent to win. I think ownership has to look at who is bringing in the talent, the talent evaluators. Sometimes the head coach is involved in getting the talent, sometimes theyre not. But they have to look at the entire organization and say, okay, how could we bring in better players. We talald about the quarterbacks. If you miss on the quarterbacks 23 times, he might be the only coach that says, look, i dont oh, no there is only 32 of those jobs in the nfl and guys dont turn them down. Unless you are in buffalo like marone was last year. And lets bring in jay glazer. Hes on the deck of the missouri. I have the great studio audience right now. And you were talking about Johnny Manziel or no . Ye or nay . Well a resounding no. And the reason Johnny Manziel is not in, number two quarterback today instead of number three. But the browns told him right off the bat, because of what you did, you will have to go above and beyond and show us you earn the right to become the starting quarterback. He is not done that and that is why he is not starting out there in cleveland. Now we shift gears and talk abouuthe arizza cardinals andnd hris johnson placed on shortterm i. R. With a cracked tibia. He said if i could get in shot and have a bullet in my anything. And the gm said they are putting him on shortterm i. R. And they think he could back quickly. And whether or not he should be on i. R. , tony romo. I talked to him this week. He said unlike a couple of weeks agag where he was willing to putut himself out there and beforor he was completely healed, he said im not going back out there until i know it is completely healed. And we have petty officer conto and you are a big broncos fan, brock or peyton . Brock. And nobody wants Johnny Manziel up here. Back to you. Nobody wants jay glazer down here and that is why he is up there. That is not true. That is wrong. Wow. I know we got up early, but you guys are being rough. I like it. That is in downtown honolulu, as you mentioned, the sun is coming up. This is a beautiful place. History coming to you from pearl on this special edition of fox nfl sunday. Sure thing. Uh right now you can get 15 gigs of data for the price of 10. Thats five extra gigs for the same priri. Looks like someone just madedet to the top of f e nice list. In that case, i want a new bicycle, a bike helmet, a basketball, a stuffed animal that talks when you squeeze. And. Yes, yes. I got your letter. Were good. Oh. Okay i was just making sure. Reporter welcome back too our special military tribute edition of the fox nfl sunday. The Pacific Aviation museum in pearl harbor is showing off the ford f150. The prod sponsors the proud sponsors of our broadcast. And the ford f150 is built ford tough. Well pearl harbor is still an active u. S. Navy base and the talented men and women working there right now not only know the true meaning of team work but very much awawa of the significance of where they serve our country. I think think crew really significance of what happened in 1941. Pearl harbor is a large base. So it occupies a strategic rule with having many different forces, whether it is marine corp, air force, whether that is army or navy. This is getting the team to Work Together. And if we Work Together as a team, it works great. We are making sure that we do the right thing. A total of 176 different commands. So you could easily say there is 176 Different Things happening on any given day here on joint base pearl harbor hickam. Because of the value of hard work and teaches you the value of team work. You learn the tenacity of a never give up attitude and that i want them to have high standards and always have the best performance available. So we are driving, were striving to be the best group, not just in hawaii, but all in the fleet. And that is what i want to try to instill in our sailors and marines around here. We need to be a team and make sure that we are unstoppable. This has been the most welcoming place ive ever been. There is a sense of family here. You get a tremendous sense of history here when you look at all of the memorials and the reminders of what our conditions are. There is a term called hannah which is a aut family. Youll find it is more than just a military family, it is the larger family and the community itself. You find that across the base, across the communities. It is a good feeling in being here, quite simply. For the people working here crowd this morning, as you see rear admiral fuller and all of the men and women and their families. They call pearl harbor their home. And this is a very special place. And here are a couple of facts. This is the home of the u. S. Navy specific fleet and the second biggest naval base in the entire United States. Nearly 2 million visitors annually come here to pay homage to what went down in 1941 and what continues here today with the spirit of the military. Jimmy, we talked about it earlier, how much thihi meant to us beingng here this s week. Yeah, the two things that stand out for me is our visit with the Wounded Warriors. And just how upbeat and poz thif they were. And when we went to the arizona memorial and we saw all of the names of the servicemen and women who lost their lives that day in 1941, that it is a sobering thought. And i grew up on a military base. So to be here brings backck feelinin of growing uup. And the one thing t tt is the soldiers that you meet on a base. There is so much pride in serving in the military, so much pride in serving here at pearl harbor. And no matter what you ask, you dont have to ask a specific person, but everyone here is a knowledge about the history of pearl harbor which shows so much about the pride in which they serve this country. Historically speaking, as we sit there to do this show, right up there is battleship r r beforereou get to the arizona morial. And there is no shipsthere. You just look and you could see them. And in our 22 years at fox, weve had the good fortune and the honor of doing a number of events with the military, whether it be in afghanistan, qatar, germany, based around the world. And the first thing that stands out to all of us, how young these guys are, how smart they are and how committed and how proud they are to serve our country and keep us safe. And i think i speak for everyone at fox when i say were so proud of them and were thankful for their commitm andent to them and amen to that. And the long tradition here at fox sport and supporting the military and around the world. It began 15 years ago on air when we broadcast from the deck of the uss trueman Aircraft Carrier from the mediterranean. And then in 2009 we brorodcast from Bagram Air Base i i afghanistan and then w continue here from pearl harbor. Jay glazer was with us in afghanistan. And his support for the military also goes way back. What people dont know is the last couple of months jay has been working to launch a new program to tie together former nfl players and combat veterans to help them persevere through many of their challenges. Jay. Look, the military experience is different than the one on the football field but the guyss you work with all havav one thing in common, they all have a desire to overcome their obstacles. Our former players and vets have a similar struggle. Mvp, merging vets and players. And i decided to merge the two. The veterans look up to Football Players and im having them go on empowerment re treats if you will will. And encourage them up and have them walk the walk together. The end of my second tour, 2004 i was blown up by an ied. It became my mission to go back and i went back within 90 days. It was a pretty tough transition for me. I had a hard time with ptsd. Football is my identity. It decided what time i went to bed atight and what did i eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they control so much of your life for so long and now its gone. Normally our paths wouldnt have crossed but these guys helped me get my life back. The program mvp is merging of them have lost and decided they have no worth. They have no value. Weve seen and experienced things otherereople never will and never would. But that should be a positive. We survived it. When you feel like no one can understand what youve been through and what you are going through and knowing what that feels like.
