for the 3:00 a.m. call and can rick perry erase the memory of that brain freeze? with this ring, he did wed and lost it much to the dismay of his pregnant wife. you won't believe where he had to search to find it. all that and more "early" this saturday morning, november 12th, 2011. captioning funded by cbs it is shaping up to be a fantastic fall bay in new york city. we like that. welcome back to "the early show." i'm russ mitchell. >> i'm rebecca jarvis. breaking news on penn state so that is where we begin. >> we beimpin wibegin with that. security is tight on penn state after the riots earlier this week. today officials are not taking any chances. armen keteyian is in state college, pennsylvania, with the latest. armen, good morning. >> good morning, russ. >> reporter: you mention inside a few hours, more than a hundred thousand fans will show up in the stadium behind me but the focus will be on a man who defined penn state football for more than 60 years and at least eight innocent young boys. friday night, thousands came together on the campus of penn state for a candlelight vigil and a moment of silence in support of the alleged victims in the child sex abuse scandal centered around former defensive coach jerry sandusky. when the 8-1 nittany lions take the field today they will do so for the first time in more than a half century without that i iconic head coach joe paterno who was fired late wednesday night in the best interests of the university. removed in a widespread housecleaning that has already cost four people their jobs. >> never again should anyone at penn state, regardless of their position, feel scared to do the right thing. >> interim president rodney ericss ericsson. >> it will take all of us some time to come to grips with the full magnitude of all the damage that has been done. >> reporter: also absent from today's game will be assistant coach mike mcqueary. yesterday, mcqueary was placed on indefinite administrative leave. >> it became clear that coach mcqueary do not function in this role under these circumstances. >> reporter: extra security will be on hand at the game and students have been warned that any uncivil action will not be tolerated. >> i hope that the reaction is positive from the students. i hope that everyone goes out there and supports our team. it's senior day. they need our support. i want them to go out there and play their hearts out after everything that has happened. >> reporter: last night, paterno's son jay issued a statement on behalf of his father. it said in part, he is absolutely distraught over what happened to the children and their families and he also wants very much to speak publicly and answer questions. one person who did speak publicly about it president obama who weighed in on the scandal while attending a college basketball game in san diego. >> obviously, the whole situation is heartbreaking and we think first and foremost of the alleged victims of these crimes. i think it's a time to do some soul-searching every institution, not just penn state about what our priorities are and making sure that we understand that our first priority is protecting our kids and, you know, we all have a responsibility. we can't leave it to a system. we can't leave it to somebody else. each of us have to take it upon ouoursel sure that our kids have the love and support and protection that they deserve. >> reporter: coach paterno has hired a top criminal defense attorney out of washington, d.c. a man who once represented former president george h.w. bush in the iran/contra scandal. it is highly unlikely that coach paterno will be here at the game today, though, he has been welcomed to it. >> armen keteyian, thank you very much. for more, let's go to sarah in state college, pennsylvania, a reporter for the patriot news and beth karras who has been following this case from the beginning. i know it's early, sarah, but it's gameday there. how would you describe the mood on campus isn't there. >> last night was different than a normal football friday night. it was quiet. it was solemn and then, of course, we had that candlelight vigil which was, you know, the mood on campus was much different than in the past couple of days where there has been rowdiness and students taking a lot of criticism for their behavior. last night, it was very well behaved and solemn and quiet clapping after several speakers. in the back behind those several thousand students with all of those candles, there were police on horses so the presence and the idea of what has been going on here this week was still very much known. >> what is the latest? how are people reacting to the latest news and mike mcqueary the fact he is put on administrative leave and not on the sidelines also today? >> reporter: i think the reason for that was because of the threats that he was getting and so we know that there has been some negative reaction towards him. the public in particular has been very hard on him and what he knew and when he knew it and what he did or did not do. he is not going to be at the game for security reasons and there is a lot of security concerns surrounding the game because the students here have been known to rush the field, riot after a game. it's happened before and it happened this week. so a lot of concern about that. the president said he will be particularly looking at student behavior today. >> beth, we are talking about eight boys over a 15-year period and early in the case. will the boys have to testify possibly at some point? >> yes. however two of the eight are unidentified. they are known as victims two and eight. no one is named in the grand jury report. but, yes, they will have to testify. it's very common. >> it's very early. do you expect this case to go to trial eventually or be pleaded out in some way? >> 94% of state cases plead out. so, yeah. chances are it will but a lot of cases still do go to trial so it could. >> joe paterno has hired this heavyweight lawyer to represent him. if you're joe paterno, why do you need a lawyer at this point? >> important to have an attorney to seek some advice. we don't know if he fears potential criminal charges. maybe he is going to be subpoenaed to testified and he just wants advice of a counsel to make sure he is okay. maybe he is contesting his termination and he needs some advice about that. maybe he fears some civil suits. so it's very prudent. i'm not surprised at all that he has a good attorney. >> you just came back from state college in the middle of the night and appreciate you joining us here this morning. how would you describe what is going on there as you look around the campus and get the vibe from a legal standpoint? >> i've done long-term investigations, three-year grand jurys as an assistant d.a. this is the tip of the iceberg, i think. this was a two-year investigation. no reason to believe the eight children are the only ones. jerry sandusky had his foundation since 1977. i believe the investigation will widen and the net cast is very broad. i did speak with a spokesman for the attorney general's office. he will not comment on further victims who are coming forward. >> a lot more to come. beth and sarah, thank you. appreciate it. here is rebecca. the republican presidential candidates take the stage again tonight and this time they will will be in spartanburg, south carolina, to debate foreign policy and national security issues. a new cbs news poll shows a three-way for the presidential nomination. herm aan cain has dropped to 18 and it shows that 30% of republican voters now say they are less likely to vote for herman cain because of the sexual harassment allegations against him. joining us is national journal greven correspondent major garrett who will co-moderating the debate tonight with cbs' scott pelley. when you look at these numbers, one thing that is glaringly obvious is that newt gingrich, of all the candidates is the one that has momentum behind him where others are falling back in line, he is pushing to the front. why do you think that is happening? >> a couple of reasons. i would also stress. when you look at national polls right now, remember, the most important polls are the one taken in a caucus state. i will tell you in south carolina, this week, newt gingrich opened five offices. i've taken to officials here who are impressed with the organization that newt gingrich is beginning to put together in this state. one thing you have to do, republican or democrat, is when your numbers go up, you have to be prepared to have an organization around those improving numbers to turn it into real votes come primary day. newt gingrich, for the first time in his campaign, is beginning to put that under beneath him. why is he rising? because cain is falling. there has been a process in the republican primary to go to somebody who is not mitt romney and right now that is newt gingrich. i expect him to do well in the debate and ron paul to do well i expect and rick santorum, people are talking about him. a wide open exchange and certainly newt gingrich will try to seize upon it tonight. >> is that a concern for romney's camp? >> it is a concern. because at some point, when the challengers begin to go down, you should go up. at some critical point, if you're the front-runner mitt romney is the person to beat. if he loses an early contest for example could happen in iowa, he could lose momentum in new hampshire. you talk to republicans here they say romney is the odds on favorite but until people start voting we will not know for sure. >> cain and perry into tonight's debate. neither known on their stance on foreign policy. how do we think they will perform tonight versus other people who have been around the political system the likes of gingrich and romney? >> i know people say it's the 10th or 11th debate. in our mind the first debate devoted to prrp. cain and perry who don't have a well understood profile on those issues if they do well tonight will be a turnaround moment for them tonight. as we say in television, please tune in. >> absolutely. of course tuning in tonight is particularly important. as you said, we haven't heard this debate yet at this point. major garrett, thank you. the cbs news poll shows 7 in 10 republican voters say they don't know who they will vote for in the primaries. what are undecided voters hoping to hear from tonight's debate? we turn to jan crawford who is also in spartanburg with a few of those voters this morning. >> reporter: we are joined by four undecided voters here. we have tracy spike and gay holt, dr. paul walters, a dentist. and tony beam is a vice president at north greenville university. let's start with foreign policy. tracy, what qualities are you looking for in the commander in chief? >> i am looking for someone who will support and protect the family and support and protect small businesses and support and protect our borders and sport and protect the borders of the god given borders of the state of israel. >> of israel? >> yes. >> all right. let's talk about some of those candidates. obviously, tony, we lieutenant you. romney and cain the front runners the past couple of weeks but you have concern about those of those candidates. >> i'm concerned about mitt romney's migration from being the governor of a very liberal state to trying to win the voters in a conservative republican primary. some of the positions he has taken in the past. and with herman cain my concern is clarity. it seems that he will make a statement and then has to walk back and clarify the statement, particularly on abortion, for example gitmo, guantanamo bay, when he had to modify his answer about that about releasing the prisoners if we have an american hostage, negotiating with terrorists. those concern me because if we win in november and have a good solid leader in the white house they have got to be clear and they need to be consistent. >> paul, what about you? where do you think the candidates may need to improve to get your vote? >> i want to hear more from herman cain about his foreign policy and what he plans to do with the situation in libya, egypt, post war iraq and afghanistan and with mitt romney be has to clarify his position. for me it's yucca mountain and the nuclear waste being disposed? south carolina. he is telling voters in nevada one thing and telling the people in south carolina something else. basically, i want to see specifics. i want them to get into it and now is the time. you've got to lay out your plan what you are wanting to do for our country to get us back on the right track. >> as for herman cain he has been fighting, we have seen more than a week now, the allegations of sexual harassment. gay, is that influencing your opinion, the allegations of herman cain at all? >> absolutely not. i feel it's character assassination and we had something similar happen in south carolina during the last election with our governor's race and i believe the american people are just tired of the character assassination. >> character assassination. tracy, what about you? are you concerned about the allegations? >> not at all. my personal opinion if there were instances of sexual harassment, it should have been brought out 14, 15, 18 years ago when the incidents occurred. >> any of you concerned? >> i think the country is just weary of this. we see it in every election cycle. we have too many important issues to focus on and if something did happen it should have come out years ago. >> i'm not concerned about cain's character. i'm concerned about whether the allegations would affect him with independent voters in the general election. >> maybe it goes to the elect ability? >> it could be. >> our polls show governor perry may have some -- voters may have concerns about elect ability with him as well. paul, the debate the last debate, is he -- >> i could not have been more excited when he announced his candidacy. i said, finally, we got the man we need. but he has just shown in these debates that on the public stage he's not doing as well as i would hope that he was doing and he is really got to ramp it up if he is going to be our nominee because i just see too many things that the democrats can use against him and national commercials. when you're on the public stage and you're running for president, you've got to bring that power and prestige that office commands. >> thank you all very much for joining us and we will all be watching tonight. that's it here, rebecca, for our undecided voters in spartanburg. >> jan crawford, thank you. you can watch that cbs news national surjournal republican debate tonight here on cbs at 8:00 p.m. eastern. a likely resignation of prime minister silvio ber berlusconi's resignation. >> in the end, it was really only a matter of time before he had to step down and not like he had much of a choice. it was about the only way to stop italy from going broke. be he agreed to resign. he was forced out by a parliamentary vote earlier this week after italy's costs went soaring out of control. >> he care about his own interests. >> reporter: it brings to a close, for now anyway, the political career of the 75-year-old billionaire who proudly lived the scandalous life of a playboy. rather than hide what the italian media called the alleged sex and drug parties at his many homes he reveled in them. here he is giving an achievement awart to young business wem saying they are pretty enough to be invited for bunga, bunga. the crudeness and rudeness did not end there. returning to italy after meeting president obama he said he brought back greetings from that man with a tan. at a g-20 meeting in london, the queen heard complaining about the irritating racket being made behind her by berlusconi. for a time italians were willing to forgive him for that but driving the third largest economy into the ground, enough was enough. he may be leaving office but that doesn't mean he is losing all of his power. his huge media empire is still impact giving him influence to make or break politicians and maybe make his own way back to the top one day. >> charlie d'agata in london, thank you. the rest of the headlines here is cbs news correspondent and morning news anchor betty nguyen is at her post. >> good morning. a hostage drama aboard a small passenger ferry in turkey is over this morning. turkish officials say security official stormed the vessel before dawn end the 12-hour siege and killing the hijacker. all were rescued on board. the hijacker is identified as a suspected kurdish rebel. kurds in turkish have long sought to call attention to their fight in their region. president obama is in hawaii this morning to host this week's asia pacific summit. before he arrived the president made a special stop in san diego to attend the carrier classic. cbs news senior white house correspondent bill plante reports. >> one of the greatest privileges of this job and one of the greatest responsibilities of this job is to deserve as your commander in chief. >> reporter: it's not unusual to see the president on an aircraft carrier. but this was different. president obama had a courtside seat at the carrier classic. the first college basketball game ever played on the flight deck of an active aircraft carrier. the "uss carl vincent." >> for them to unwind but us to celebrate their incredible accomplishments is a great treat. >> reporter: the north carolina tar heels against the michigan state spartans. when asked for whom the president was rooting, his spokesman demurred no surprise because north carolina and michigan are both battleground states in next year's election. vincent is enormous. there is seating for 7,000 people around the basketball court on the flight deck with room to spare. the ship was commissioned in 1982. it's been deployed all over the world. but now best known as the carrier from which osama bin laden body was buried to sea this past may. later the president heads to australia and indonesia. in all air force run will rack up 25,000 miles equivalent to a trip around the world. bill plante, cbs news, san diego. north carolina won that game 65-55. i have a feeling neither team felt like they lost that. first time it ever happened on an active aircraft carrier. >> i'm thinking what if the ball goes out of bounds?
