morning. if you look in the distance, erica. you can see the weekend. right on the horizon. >> so close you can almost taste it. good morning, everyone. here along with chris wragge, nice to have you on this friday morning. >> not too excited, but nice that the weekend is right around the corner and good news to report. that's where we begin with the key report on jobs released about 90 minutes ago and the news is better than expected, although the unemployment rate didn't change in september. >> it didn't change in september, but better than expected and better than the jobs report we saw in august that had so many people concerned. rebecca jarvis is here with the break down for us. you're going to put it in plain english. >> the good news on this report is that it was better than expected, like you said. 103,000 new jobs added in the month of september. still, the unemployment rate is stuck at 9.1%. it was better than expected. about 45,000 of those new jobs added came from verizon employees. came back to work in september. the big caveat here takes 150,000 new jobs every month to be created in order to bring population growth and account for population growth and in addition to that, we've just seen this unemployment rate stagnate for the last two years. that is not the greatest news. >> how is the market reacting to these numbers? >> the market's response is slightly positive and slightly positive because this was an upside surprise and you do see wall street, at least for the moment, slightly hap wae the report. >> we'll take slightly. there was a lot of concern, too, that based on what this report showed maybe it could help foster those fears or even bring us into a double dip recession. how does it factor in? >> it factors in that we are not looking at that dooms day scenario as of this morning. the dooms day scenario is the double dip or a second recession here. and we've got that off the table, just slightly. again, slightly as a result of these better than expected numbers. so, we're looking at not a great environment, but a better than expected environment, definitely means dooms day is somewhat off the table. >> let's talk about these occupy wall street protests which have now made their way to the goldman sachs building and new jersey. our politicians and people in washington are they hearing the voices and protests of these people? >> more unions getting in on the protest and earlier this week when president obama made his jobs speech, he brought in the fact that these protesters are there. >> a lot of people, as you said, paying more attention to them. are they getting a cohesive message together so we can have a discussion. >> rebecca, thank you very much. good to have a good news here on a friday morning. rebecca jarvis, thanks. on thursday, looking ahead to today's unemployment report, president obama demanded action on his jobs bill. >> senior white house correspondent bill plante has more on the president's new conference in three months. good morning, bill. >> good morning, chris. at thursday's news conference which lasted for more than an hour he kept up the pressure on congress saying that if they don't pass the bill, the voters are going to send them packing. you've been out of the campaign trail banging away at them saying, pass this bill. >> right. >> it begins to look like you're campaigning and like you're following the harry truman model against the do nothing congress instead of negotiating. are you negotiating? will you? >> i'm always open to negotiation. if congress does something, then i can't run against a do nothing congress. if congress does nothing, then it's not a matter of me running against him. i think the american people will run him out of town. >> reporter: the president demanded explanation from lawmakers that opposed the billion dollar bill he said will create jobs. >> why would you be opposed to tax cuts for small businesses and tax cuts for american workers? >> reporter: the bill, which is expected to go to the senate floor next week now includes a 5.6% tax increase of those making more than a million dollars. mr. obama's signaled in the news confrance that he is comfortable with that, but it will likely kill the bill in the senate, it's already dead in the house. the president said republicans won't talk to him, they say, it's the other way around. >> all year i've reached out to the president, reached out to the president but you have to have a willing partner. >> reporter: with the president's approval rating at 44%, congress' at 11% and demonstrators raging against wall street, mr. obama said he sympathized with the protesters. >> these days a lot of folks who are doing the right thing aren't rewarded. >> reporter: you can see the argument taking shape for the 2012 election. that's what the president is going to be saying, that the middle class is losing out. heads up, it's coming pup erica? >> all right, bill, thanks. bill plante at the white house. also in washington this morning, cbs news chief washington correspondent bob schieffer along with major garret. gentlemen, good to have both of you with us. bob, it seems like with each speech the president is really sort of ramping up this push or call to action on his part. how is that playing, though, to lawmakers? >> well, a lot of democrats really like it. they've been wanting the president to, you know, put more point on his arguments and to really take on these republicans, republicans don't like it, of course. you just heard john boehner and what he said. but, this is, this is all part of how it's going to be. anybody who's been watching the president out on the campaign trail in recent days and recent weeks. this is his message. we got to do something, the situation is dire. if republicans are not willing to go along with me, i'm going to call them out by name and he's been doing that. it's been a long time. it was a long time coming, i think, but this is, this is the strategy from here on in, i think, erica. >> that's the strategy there. major, in many ways we listen to the president and you listen to speaker boehner and it almost feels like a he said, he said from both sides. can anything, i feel like a broken record asking you this, can anything get accomplished when there seems to be an increasing divide here and people calling each other out? >> well, some of this is theatrical. the country wants the president to know that he's fighting, fighting, fighting on his behalf. he wants the public to conclude, at least he gave it his best shot. there will be ultimately some agreement on tax cuts, not exactly the way the president has written, but republicans are open to that. there will probably be some agreement down stream on transportation funding and the president won't get everything of what he wants, but he may get a third of it. speaker boehner said he lost a governing partner and the president has given up on the country, given up on legislating and all these he's about is compaining. the republicans began to feel the heat and they undercut that by saying this isn't fighting for you, this is fighting for the president. >> in all reality, the campaign is in full swing on both sides. major, let's look at what happened this week in the gop race for the nomination for president. herman cain at the top of the polls right now. some falling out, obviously, with some other folks and hearing from chris christie and sarah palin that they won't run. when it comes to herman cain, he's not your traditional candidate. how long can he maintain that momentum? >> he will go through what he hasn't gone through so far, which is scrutiny. herman cain has not been scrutinized very much. he has become a very capable debate participate and simple, engaging tax reform plan and a complete outsider. in a presidential campaign unlike i've seen before, the fact that you're a complete outsider is an instant qualifier. it got you in the conversation and now allow you to dominate the conversation at least on the republican side. herman cain has that advantage. once the scrutiny comes, he will have to deal with that the way rick perry, michele bachmann and the way everyone else did. scrutiny sometimes undercuts your poll numbers. >> when it comes to rick perry, hasn't exactly been the greatest week for him. is this something he came out of the gate so strongly. is this something that he can recover from and truly remain a contender or seeing the beginning or end of his campaign? >> well, he certainly lost a lot of support, but as mager and i were talking just before this, he also raised $17 million. he can stay around for a while because he's been able to raise this money, but he's got a lot of, you know, as ricky ricardo used to say to lucy, he's got a plot of explaining to do and we'll see how he does that. he has not done well in the debates up until this point. when you can raise that kind of money, it will keep him around for a while. >> you need a lot of money to be in this race, good to have both of you with us this morning. thank you. >> you bet. >> bob's guest on "face the nation" presidential candidates herman cain and newt gingrich. now too, the controversy over prostate cancer screening. an independent panel appointed by the federal government is about to recommend that healthy men should not get the blood tests calling it unreliable. >> that recommendation could lead, in their estimation, to more cancer deaths. next to skin cancer prostate cancer is the most common type found in men. more than 240,000 men will be diagnosed with it this year. 34,000 will die. our medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton is here with more this morning. so, this comes as a surprise, probably to a lot of people that there would be a recommendation against a test which screens for this. what's behind this? >> definitely not to the medical community. this has been brewing for quite some time. look at what this test is. psa which stands for prostate specific antigen. specific blood test that measures a protein made by prostate cells, not always cancer indicating. now, what we expect the new recommendations to show is that men under the age of 75, now, this is a d grade test, which means don't do it because in their estimation, the harm of this test really outweighs the benefit. we should point out that men over the age of 75 are already recommended not to get this screening test. >> they've been debating the benefits of this psa test for so long, why such controversy here. it's either good or it isn't. why? >> we saw this in a lot of fields of medicine. we saw it with the mammography debate in 2009. some groups are saying, of course, it's not a highly accurate test. false positives leading to unnecessary biopsies, surgery, radiation with significant consequences and also false negatives. a man can get a normal result when, in fact, there is cancer. the end point in particular that this group is looking at is whether or not this test saves lives and that's what is being debated now. let's go over to jeff glor with a check at the news desk of the other headlines. >> good morning to you. we just got word that three women have been awarded this year's nobel peace prize. advance women's rights especially in africa and the middle east. the winners ellen johnson sirleaf, leymah gbowee and tawakkul karman. >> unless women obtain the same opportunities as men to developments at all levels of society. >> karman said the award was a victory and the arab dictat dictatorships is over. congresswoman gabrielle giffords is continuing her rehab in houston after making a rare trip yesterday. navy retirement ceremony for her husband, former astronaut mark kelly. vice president biden presided there. it was giffords' second visit to washington since she was shot in january. britain's prince harry is in the u.s. this morning. he arrived yesterday at a still such an outpouring of emotion over steve jobs. his death earlier this week. som many people want to know wht is nextt for apple. >> the answer could lie with apple's designer. john blackstone is in cupertino, california, with more on that for us. good morning. >> good morning, chris. here at apple's headquarters employees had suspected for weeks that steve jobs was close to death, ever since he stepped down as ceo in august. even knowing that it was coming, his death still came as a shock, here and almost everywhere else. tributes to steve jobs spread throughout the world following news of his death. from social media to the steps of the company's retail stores, fans of steve jobs came to celebrate his life. while others wondered how his company could survive without him. those familiar with apple's iconic products need look no further than the man who created most of them. jonathan. >> the lead designer for so many of the lead apple products everything from the imac to the ipod to the ipad to the mac books. >> reporter: english designer joined apple in 1992. within five years he was the company's conceptual minds of the products that consumers couldn't live without. >> the simpplicity and design by subtraction is his trademark. >> a design that helps you do something, not only better than you did it before, but in ways you didn't anticipate. >> reporter: for students at new york's pratt institute. apple apple's success remains a constant inspiration. >> but they've also kind of transformed the hurisen for like everyday living. >> social obligation now to have like a cool gadget. >> reporter: while these students strive to make their mark, they're also confident apple's hold as makers of the coolest gadgets of all is in the right hands. >> i don't think it's a ship without steve jobs. he had such a massive personality and tremendous influence. those waves will be felt well into the future. >> apple's new products are all designed inside jonathan ives studio which is deep inside the headquarters building here. apparently, a place so secretive that even most apple employees are never allowed inside. john blackstone, cbs news, cupertino, california. still to come on the program this morning, we're going to show you how apple fans have gone on youtube to tell the world how much they'll miss steve jobs. >> they're still pouring out. also ahead this morning, the link between unemployment and your health. we all know how the stress of being out of work can affect you physically and emotionally. we'll give you the tools to help deal with that. that's ahead this morning on "early show." it burns! it's singeing me. it's the sun. get out of the office more often, with chili's $6 lunch break combos, featuring texas toast half sandwiches. chili's lunch break combos.
