Have a terrific Opening Night, and we have 10 big nights in the festival, and 68 dams from 15 different countries. 68 films from 15 different countries, and i think the stars were shining on us saying we would celebrate our 36th festival with fun and levity. Lets set up a clip for the Opening Night film. It is the 10th of men and directed by Daniel Berman who is heads temple films at the festival in the past, joining us in person at the castro theater on july 21. This is a romantic comedy about a man that returns home to help out his father, and he has a Jewish Charity that he runs in the jewish district. The 10th man. [ video playing ] i know that the Film Festival has the Opening Night, closing night in between this freedom of expression, and what is the closing film and the freedom of expression . For the love of spot made about Leonard Nimoy made by his son, adam. Is a tribute to his father, and also a father and son story, and great clips of his entire career, and talking about his jewish upbringing, and how his famous sign came about. And adam nimoy will join us at the closing castro. July 21, and closing is july 31. And the Film Festival runs from july and the Film Festival runs from july 21 to august 7. Yes, and he goes after the castro to marin, palo alto and berkeley. My favorite night, and im looking forward to this, we are honoring norman lear with the freedom of expression award, and we saw a fantastic Opening Night film on sundance, norman lear jets, another version of you. And norman lear will join us and be showing the film and then sit down for an onstage interview following the film with peter stein, the former executive director. It is beautiful. And heres a clip of the film we will be seeing. It is full of clips from all in the family the jefferson and good times. Norman lear was cutting edge for his times, and the history of these experiences. You have talked about the general theme being comedy this year. Did that evolved spontaneously, how did that happen . Maybe it is the times where living in right now, a lot going on in the world, facing some very troubling issues. It has been great to see so many independent film makers bringing comedy to the forefront, but comedy with the message and meeting and meaning. A quick break and we will return to mosaic. Totally. The jewish Film Festival from july 21 through the 31st, at the castro, and july 29 through august 4 is in berkeley. August august 5seven in oakland at the piedmont theater, and also at the san rafael film center. It is at a lot of wonderful places. It is going to be great and where doing something new this year, and we are having a film and feast event for the food is in the area, and it is directed by roger furman and he will be with us. It is a guided tour through this diverse world of israeli cuisine, a mouthwatering journey, led on this trip by the celebrity chef from philadelphia, and his cookbook this year received the James Beard Award for best cookbook. We will follow this film with a feast at the restaurant and there will be several local chefs. And they are coming to cook dishes inspired by the cookbooks and where really looking forward to the event. Lets take a look at this clip, in search of the israeli cuisine. [ video playing ] that makes you hungry. I think those that are foodies in familiar with the tel aviv, a couple of these dishes are from tel aviv, a fantastic place to go to. It will be amazing, and patrons can purchase a film ticket, and we will have questions being answered after the film, and also at the other events. This is our second them clip. Before i get to that, i want to mention about the great comedian robert kline, and robert kline will be here with us, and for those of you that do not remember robert kline, he is one of the most influential comedians working today up there with Richard Pryor and george carlin, and he has been on the tonight show, on letterman over 100 times, on the third saturday night live with the famous cheeseburger skit, and still very funny. We are very excited to have him here. And the berkeley big night film at the berkeley representative theater. It is the last laugh about the humor and the holocaust, and directed by a stanford graduate from the documentary program. It has mel brooks, carl reiner, sarah silverman, and we talk about the limits of humor. And theres a holocaust survivor in the film that help to structure the film, and she weighs in on whether something can or cannot be said. Is it funny, and she is pretty open to humor. Good morning, and welcome back to mosaic, and we are in the middle of a great conversation about the 36th annual jewish Film Festival, and welcome back to lexi leban, the executive director and we have jay, the program director. And we have a theme around the people in the book. We feel like the writers are the unsung heroes, and where shining a spotlight on the writers this year. We have a terrific debut, and we have the film Center Screening of indignation and the direct oriel debut. And he was the former ceo of Focus Features and wrote and produced some of the greatest cinema of our time, the ice storm broke Back Mountain and it is a great film, and added tatian of the philip roth book, and Sundance Philip Roth texted in and said it was the best adaptation of one of his books that he had ever seen, and a great credit. It is a wonderful story about a young man that is the son of the kosher butcher from the east coast to goes to a Christian College in the midwest in ohio. And he deals with his jewish atheist self and the crash that he experiences with the culture. And certain people of the generation will remember the feel roth adaptation with allie mcgraw, and was that the first cinematic adaptation of one of his works . And go by columbus and all the way through to now, so lets look at this clip. [ video playing ] wonderful. We want to keep up the pace of enticing people with cliff after cliff, so what is our next clip . Clip after clip, and so what is our next clip we have to look at . It is our next in jewish rider, and short stories for the new yorker, and this is based on a collection of short stories, and it is a comingof age story. What do we have this year . We have a spotlight on the television there is. Televisionaries. And we have three Israeli Television series, and one of them, false flag created and written by someone that will be with us, and it will keep you on the edge of your seats, and we have a clip on that. And we also have a series, the rider and the writer and we have another series, and in season two, and we are excited about that. And you can also watch season number one. This is a clip from false flag. [ video playing ] fascinating. What other israeli films do you have this year . We have from sundance, the settlers and the director will be with us. This is an interesting film given the news about the funding and continuing to develop the settlement. It is a historical film looking at the settlers in a historical perspective, and also footage of the holocaust youth and the west bank. It will be an interesting film for people to see. We also have a local spotlight premiere of unamerican film, the former director of the traveling jewish theater company, a World Premiere in jerusalem, and he plays evan teen different characters expressing different points of view about the israeli and palestinian crisis. We also have mr. Gaga, a lighter affair, and this was the Audience Award winner at the sxsw Film Festival, sxsw south by southwest, and creating a dance language that is very popular in israel.
