reena ninan with a western edition of the broadcast. the number of zika cases in the united states topped 1,800 this week, mostly from travel to foreign countries. but in a miami neighborhood, health officials say local mosquitoes have now infected at least 16 people with the virus, which causes severe birth defects. pregnant women are advised to stay away from florida's so-called zika zone. as marlie hall reports, the outbreak that sent a chill through florida's tourism industry. >> reporter: insecticide rained down on miami's's zika zone. the spraying continued this morning by air and by land. targeting mosquitos that cause the virus which has been linked to birth defects. >> my one job is to protect this baby. i can't get bit by a mosquito. >> reporter: lisa isaza is 36 weeks pregnant. she and other expectant mothers, like leah lacero, are on edge. >> the most fearful thing is i don't want to have a child who ends up with some of the severe cerebral defects that have been talked about, including microcephaly. >> reporter: another concern-- tourism, florida's biggest industry. visitors spent about $89 billion here last year. governor rick scott is doing damage control. >> this is a safe state. >> reporter: he says mosquito-control crews in miami-dade county have been effective, but a travel advisory warning pregnant women not to visit the area remains in effect. >> we've tested over 20,000 mosquitos now in our state, and we've not found one mosquito with zika. >> reporter: there could be a new weapon in the fight against the virus. federal authorities have approved testing of genetically modified mosquitos designed to stop the spread of zika by reducing the insect populations. mutant male mosquitos pass on a lethal gene to the females, killing their offspring. a trial of those genetically modified mosquitos could take place in the florida keys only if local residents vote in favor of it. reena. >> ninan: i wonder if they'll go for it. marlie, thank you. well, after the trump campaign's worst week ever, the latest national polls show hillary clinton about seven points ahead. this weekend, the republican ticket is trying a more pensive approach. errol barnett has more from washington. >> hi, mike pence. >> reporter: campaigning in indiana and ohio today, republican vice presidential nominee mike pence tried to rally his party behind donald trump after a troublesome week for the campaign. >> we're going to make america great again. i believe it with all my heart. ( applause ) >> if you don't like me, that's okay. vote for pence because it's the same thing. great guy. >> reporter: on friday, trump adjusted his message. >> we need the unity. we have to win this election. >> reporter: he carefully read his endorsement of the republican leader in the house after saying he was not quite there yet days ago. >> i support and endorse our speaker of the house paul ryan. ( cheers and applause ) >> reporter: this tactical change comes after polls show trump losing ground to hillary clinton. trump is also amping up his attacks. >> she's a monster. ( cheers ) okay? look at what happened. look at her history. in another way, she's a weak person. she's actually not strong enough to be president. >> reporter: now, with just over 13 weeks until the election, trump also trails clinton in campaign fund-raising. he's trying to close that gap tonight with his first fund-raising event in weeks followed by dozens more over the next month. clinton returns to campaigning monday in the battleground state of florida. reena. >> ninan: errol barnett, thank you, errol. well, following the friday night lights of the opening ceremony, the summer olympics are now in full swing. saturday's highlights include the first gold medal of the game and a security scare. ben tracy has latest from rio. >> reporter: olympic cyclists took to the streets in rio, racing along this city's gorgeous coastline. u.s. secretary of state john kerry was there and also went to see beach volleyball on the famed copacabana beach. >> the first gold medal of the game went to an american. 19-year-old ginny thrasher of virginia won the women's 10-meter air rifle. the rowing competition is now underway here at the olympic lagoon, and there are big concerns about the extremely polluted water. the serbian men's team ended up in the water when their boat capsized. paul and jackie cox came from england to watch the competition. what have you heard about the water? >> it's not as clean as it might be. ( laughter ) >> reporter: that's putting it nicely. >> reporter: at the main olympic park, spectators complained about long lines due to a lack of security screeners. the competition kicked off after last night's opening ceremony that lit up the night sky in rio. michael phelps led team u.s.a., but the refugee team competing under the olympic flag got the warmest reception. kurt jenkins and his friends came to rio and definitely have the olympic spirit. your favorite thing ever? >> yeah, like, american sports i don't care about-- football, baseball, basketball, i'm not the biggest fan, but i will literally watch every single hour of the olympics when it's on. >> reporter: there was a security scare here in rio today when a loud explosion was heard at the finish line of the men's cycling race. it turned out to be the bomb squad detonating a suspicious package and, reena, thankfully it turned out to be nothing. >> ninan: ben tracy in rio, thanks, ben. and in new jersey, dozens of people were hurt when a railing collapsed during a concert by snoop dogg and wiz khalifa. demarco morgan has more on the show-stopping accident. >> reporter: snoop dogg and wiz khalifa were rocking the mic when suddenly a metal railing in front of the stage came crashing down. abbey hecht was one of the dozens who fell during the mid-concert mishap in camden, new jersey. she says people kept piling on top of her. >> it was so hard to breathe. i couldn't move. i literally thought i was dying. it was so scary. >> reporter: hecht said snoop dogg and wiz khalifa were performing close to the lawn when a crowd in her section rushed toward the stage. the barricade broke, causing a crush of people in a concrete pit below the stage. >> security guards started rushing over and trying to help people up, and i still couldn't move, so i kind of just-- i was trying to push myself out, but i couldn't move. >> reporter: audrey jongens was just a few rows back from the railing. >> all of a sudden, i see everyone, like, rushing to the front, people pushing me, too, and then suddenly people started falling off the edge. like, i see all these people, like, come off the edge. >> everybody stay calm. we're all good. >> reporter: more than 40 people were injured. only one was seriously hurt, but everyone has been released from the hospital. snoop dogg and wiz khalifa both tweeted out well-wishes to their injured fans. and there's another show at that same venue tonight featuring salt n pepa, vanilla ice, and coolio, and there's a newly secured railing in place. >> pelley: thanks so much, demarco. in belgium, two female police officers were wounded by a man shouting in arabic and waving a machete. it happened outside a police station in charleroi. police shot and killed the man. it's being investigated as a possible terror attack. a judge in london denied bail for a teenager accused of murdering a retired teacher from florida. zakaria bulhan, who is of somali and norwegian descent, is accused of going on a stabbing spree last wednesday. five others were wounded. in rouen, france, at least 13 people were killed when a fire swept through a bar during a birthday party. jonathan vigliotti has the latest from london. >> reporter: reena, this fire is all the more tragic when you consider how it began. fire officials say a person was walking down the stairs to the basement carrying a lit birthday cake when they lost their footing and stumbled. the cake went flying. those candles ignited the flammable soundproofing foam that lined the wall. it happened early saturday morning. firefighters were unable to get to the scene in time. they say all 13 people died, not from the flames, but from the toxic fumes released from that soundproofing foam. one witness told investigators the fire looked like a flame thrower, saying everything happened so fast. this morning, all that remained were shattered windows and charred furniture. mourners gathered outside where they dropped off flowers. the victims were between the ages of 16 and 25 years old. reena, it's france's deadliest fire in a decade. >> ninan: jonathan vigliotti in london. thanks, jonathan. well, protesters are taking to the streets in chicago this weekend after police released video showing the fatal shooting of an unarmed african american teenager. the footage shows officers firing at the teen as he speeds away in a stolen car. three officers have been suspended. gas prices continue to fall across the country. a.a.a. says the national average for a regular gallon of gas is now $2.12. but in the most populous state, california, people are paying some of the highest prices. a consumer watch group says california drivers are being taken for a ride. here's carter evans. >> reporter: even though gas prices in california are a dollar a gallon cheaper than they were this time last year, a consumer group says drivers are still being ripped off. >> this is the golden state gouge at its full lustre. >> reporter: jamie court, president of "consumer watchdog," says the evidence is in the difference between wholesale and retail prices. today in los angeles, oil companies are selling each other gas at $1.26 a gallon, one of the lowest prices in the nation. but the average price at the pump is $2.69 a gallon, one of the highest prices in the nation. >> if we have the lowest wholesale price for gasoline, we should also have the lowest retail price for gasoline. >> reporter: in a statement, the trade group that represents oil companies in the western u.s. said, "repeated investigations and an independent analysis have consistently demonstrated that market factors are the primary driver of fuel costs in california."
