At least 16 deaths are blamed on the huge and powerful snowstorms that barreled through the northeast. Now comes the unprecedented cold. Temperatures are expected to plunge well below freezing with subzero windchill readings over the next few days across half the nation. Lets go to lonnie quinn from our cbs affiliate lonnie quinn. I want to complain but then you look at boston and realize it could be worse. You bet you. I want to take a look at the whole country, anthony and vinita. Good morning, everybody. Much quieter than yesterday morning. However this little system is going to bring a storm around the thumb of michigan across. The story remains the big blizzard that plagued the northern seaboard. Lets go over there. No more snow out of it. That system is way out around greenland. But on the backside of these systems, thing about it counterclockwise spinning. Youre 19 degrees below zero to start off in bangor new york is 5 degrees. Boston is 3 degrees and now you tack on a little bit of the wind on the backside and youre feeling like 21 in bangor feeling like 17 below in albany 13 below in boston. 3 below for that morning cold feels like temp in new york city. Washington, d. C. , feels like 5 degrees. You did have snow on the front lawn of the white house but the big snow around the boston area picking up 1 to 2 feet of snow. Then you get down to Northern New England to where you picked up 6 inches to a foot and then more as you push south. Whats interesting, its like putting ice into a cooler. It keeps the cold air around it. I will tell you, you warm up a bit for sunday for the eastern seaboard. Its tuesday of next week the temperatures will be colder than they are right now. You go up you go down. And its going back down again bigtime. Anthony . 1 degree when i got in the car this morning and actually thats probably pretty good for the northeast. You bet you. Thats exactly the case here in Copley Square boston. One giant refrigerator. Lets say freezer. I guess its no surprise not too many people Walking Around considering the temps are around the zero mark. Lets take a look at the video over the last day or so as everybody tried to deal with this gigantic blizzard that hit new england on thursday and friday. Many parts of eastern massachusetts got well over a foot of snow and in some coastal regions it approached 2 feet of snow. All of this accompanied, of course, by absolutely frigid conditions. It made things miserable, lets face it. Heres the Silver Lining because it was so cold. The snow up here was fluffy and light. Number one that makes it easy to shovel. And also it did not weigh down power lines. So this time around we did not have widespread power blackouts. The electricity did not go out unlike last year with nemo when we had hundreds of thousands without power and, of course, without heat. We talk about the coast. And in addition to the high winds and a lot of snow the big problems that the coastal regions here in eastern massachusetts are dealing with is flooding. Very serious flooding at this hour. Thats causing widespread disruptions, of course in peoples lives and property damage. The good news is weve checked with local police and fire officials. We dont know of any dire situations as far as injuries but certainly a number of evacuations. Everybody trying to dig out from this blizzard. Not only that trying to dig out from the really really cold temperatures. Live in boston, im jim smith. Back to you guys. Jim smith of our boston station wbztv. Thank you. The chi need ship that launched the helicopter that rescued the group is now forced to stay longer than plant. Mark phillips is in our London Bureau with the developments. Good morning. Good morning, vinita and anthony. Theyre on their way to dried land but in the most roundabout route imagined. Nothing has been normal about this rescue. Now some of the rescuers themselves are stuck. The 52 tourists in search of adventure had more than they might have wanted. When the russian ice breaker on which they had begun their adventure got stuck in the antarctic pack ice and the chinese ice breaker also got locked in help seemed to be at hand by an australiaen ship also in the area. They got a helicopter to rescue then. The australian ship which had been on a resupply mission to an strain base in the aunt art tick has to complete its mission before heads to dry land. It may be there for a couple of weeks more. Its able to make way through the ice that unseasonable winds have brought in. The crews of the chinese and russian ships are staying on board their vessels. The boats are stuck but not currently in danger. Theyre waiting for a wind shift that will hopefully loosen the grip of the ice and push through to allow them to go into open water. Thats the hope anyway. I think its really but if andrew luck is the quarterback that we think he is and everybody is saying he is indianapolis is supposed to win this game. They blew him out at home in kansas city. I love andy reid but the great thing about sports, at the end of the day you have to do it. The eagles are home against the saints. This is particularly interesting because the quarterback nick foles grew up admiring drew brees. Well see what happens at the end of the game. Again, its been a nice fairy tale ride for nick foles. The new Orleans Saints are a completely Different Team when theyre on the road, a completely Different Team. But i think they may win this game. re 06 in mayoff games on the road, but i think that they will win this game. Again, if drew brees is who we think he is, theyre going to find a way to go into philadelphia. This is the first time. Chip kelly, you know has been a nice run and all that, you know but he didnt win a National Championship in college either. Whoever won, theyre proud. Lets talk about the chargers lets talk about the charger at the bengals. The chargers shouldnt even be in the playoffs. Theyre okay. They barely beat a Kansas City Team that rested all their starters, which is another issue for another day, this whole idea of resting starters. The chargers are an okay team. I like marvin lewis. Hes been at it a long time. You know and fortunately the fans sucked it up and bought tickets so they wont be blanked out. Quickly, back to green bay and playing the 49ers in minus 30 degree windchill. What do you see there . Its unbelievable. I like San Francisco in that. Pilots can get extremely tired. Reporter barry schiff was a pilot for 40 years before becoming an airline consultant. It can be mentally fatiguing. Reporter pilot fatigue was identified as the cause of the 2009 colgan air crash that killed 50 people near buffalo, new york, and prompted the faa to make changes to pilot rest policies. Now in an effort to comply, airlines are hiring more pilots and upgrading their scheduling system, but the new rules could increase delays for travelers, especially during bad weather conditions. An internal memo from jetblue i stated delays incurred will have a greater. Path since everything will change. The trade group that represents most of the u. S. Its time now for morning rounds and this time were taking a closer look at a disease almost everyone fears, alzheimers. We have with us dr. Jon lapook and dr. Rudolph tanzi, director of the research and aging unit. Last month they held a summit on the growing threat of alzheimers and other forms of dementia. British Prime Minister David Camm Ron promised to double his nations commitment to Research Funding over the next decade to fight the global epidemic. A new case every second a global cost of 600 billion a year, and that is to say nothing of the human cost because it doesnt matter whether youre in london, los angeles, rural india or japan, this disease steals lives, it wrecks families it breaks hearts. And that is why all of us here are so utterly determined to beat it. I mean, jon, were seeing similar amounts of growth here in the u. S. Why now . What is different to this epidemic thats leading it to explode . Its huge. Right now about 5 million americans have alzheimers. Thats expected to triple by 2050. Right now were spending about 200 billion in direct Health Care Costs for people who have alzheimers. Thats expected to go to a trillion dollars by 2050. Thats a huge problem that threatens to bankrupt us. Dr. Tanzi, you spent your whole career fighting this disease. You discovering the first alzheimers gene. Where does treatment stand at this point . Unfortunately the drugs in the category of better than nothing. They treat some of the symptoms but temporarily. The benefits go away after a time. What we really need is a drug that will stop the actual progress of the disease. As many people know the recent trials on those types of drugs have failed and so were really back to square one. You know dr. Tanzi, you started a company to develop new drugs. It really begs the question. Can new detection techniques really help advance the treatments that were seeing . I guess theres good news and bad news. The good news is thanks to the many genes were discovering i run the program thats very useful we have stages of the disease going from the gooey toxic cells and even worse the brain sees all this and thinks its an attack from the outside and start to attack the nerve cells. So you get these three stages. Now, the bad news is that even with this information, when you look what weve been doing in Clinical Trials those drugs were based on the earliest genes we found back in the early 80s and 90 gs that taught us about the early stage of the disease. What weve been doing is trying to treat the patients with drugs with early stages when theyre already in the later stages of alzheimers. This explains the disconnect and a lot of the failure. In recent years we discovering something really amazing. The changes in the brain that occurred with alzheimers occurred 10, 20 years before the symptoms occurred. Theres been certain techniques brain imaging, brain scan biomarkers finding things in the brain that show up in the spinal fluid or genetic testing the kind that dr. Tan zee qaa has helped to develop. Now were able to identify it years before symptoms occur and maybe its possible that some of these medicines that it didnt work, maybe theyll be more successful. The drugs were woking on right now are still targeting the first stage, but one company in australia is attacking everything in side and well have Clinical Trial readouts sometime this year. Were very eager to see that. In the meantime we hope we have this right that were treating the right stage at the right time. What were really lacking is the drug that hits the response. We have nothing that can help you. Is there anything even in possible development at this point for that . Right now theres information, for the first time we know that the fweeps that control that response. Once you have that information you can think about the drugs that target that. This is going to get worse and worse because about 95 of the people who have alzheimers are over the age of 65. Were Getting Better at decreasing death by heart attack or stroke. You live longer you run the risk of getting something else. What are the risks . . Nothing ee going to guarantee you dont get this. Whats good for the heart is good for the brain. It gets rid of the first material that initiates the disease. Exercise actually causes new nerve cells to grow in the brain thats affected in alzheimers. The shortterm part of the industry. Diet, mediterranean diets are helpful. Getting socially engaged, not sitting at home by yourself. Making new synapses. The more money in the bank it protects you. And sleep. Sleep. Sleep is really good for you. Perhaps during sleep it recharges them. Sleep is great one. Take a brisk walk with them and talk about something interesting. When you look at the economics, youre talking about minimal numbers. I think some of the comforts at home have a lot do with it as well. I think the bottom line is all the stands will be sold out. Youre a hard core football town. Green bay is not sold out . Im surprised. Green bay will be sole out. Trust me be i saturday afternoon, you wont see empty seats. Why do they wear short sleeves in cold weather . Thats a good question. I think what happens is Football Players want to feel as fast as they can, wear as little as they need to to play the game faster but sometimes the weather takes priorities. There are rumors about you, mr. Bill. I heard from a reliable sources that theres mucho evidence that there bill cowher will coach the washington redskins. I dont know about that. Is there a part of you that starting twitching, itching and says i want to coach again . Ive reason enjoyed my time with cbs and the crew. It satisfies that. Again, it hes not the allencompassing part that coaching entails. Welcome to cbs this morning saturday. Im anthony mason. Coming up the end of an era era. Why new york citys mayor wants to end carriages. Americans have fallen in love with the new wave of british tv shows. And he is the new big shot in piano mans band. The musician who played in a tribute band and scored the gig of a lifetime. Our top story, at least 16 deaths are blamed on the snowstorm that started in the central u. S. Before moving east. This morning people are waking up to a big cleanup. And to make matters worse, ta theyre unbattled unprecedented cold weather. And there is more to come. Lonnie, good morning. Good morning venita. Good morning anthony. Its cold for much of the country. Eastern seaboard getting battered. Theres a cold front around minneapolis. The air behind the front, by the time you get to tuesday, its going to be even worse. Lets zoom in on that area. Yesterday was the blizzardlike storms that mushed through the area. It is still affecting this area. With really cold air pushing it in from the north. We have temperatures starting off at 19 below in bangor maine. 12 below, albany, new york. 3 for boston. 13 for washington, d. C. But now you factor in we still have a little bit of wind left over. Not a lot but enough to give you a windchill of 24 below in bangor. 17 below in albany. 13 below in boston. In new york it felt like 3 below zero at one time. And the snowpack plays a big role. I gave you this example before. Its like putting ice into a cooler. You put ice or snow on the ground it keeps the surface air cold. So you picked up the bullseye around boston. One to two feet. Portions of new england down to new york city, picked up half a foot to a foot of snow. Outside that three to six inch total. And on the lawn of the white house, you picked up snow. Cold air for everybody. By the time you get to tuesday, i think the northeast is going to be experiencing some of the coldest temperatures they felt in two decades. If you say, hey, it could be worse, it could be worse. You could be in canada where it is 43 degrees below zero. It is all comparative, right . Going right after the show lonnie. The bullseye was hit with nearly two feet of snow in boston. Jim, good morning. Reporter good morning, anthony. Boy, ill tell you, it feels great to be in the bullseye. Its a frigid bullseye here right in the heart of boston. Let me get out of the way and show you the picture. Snow, great surprise. Not a heck of a lot of pedestrians around. This blizzard hit new england thursday and friday. Many parts of eastern massachusetts got well over a foot of snow. In coastal regions, the totals approached two feet. All of this accompanied by those absolutely frigid conditions. They made things miserable, of course. But the Silver Lining was because it was so cold the snow was fluffy and light, easy to shovel. And it also did not weigh down power lines. So the electricity did not go out. So these people have heat. So that made it a lot more bearable. And we talked about the coastal regions a little bit earlier. Unfortunately, besides the cold temperatures, the coastal regions, got a heck of a lot of snow. Right now they aren during an awful lot of flooding causing widespread power. Not widespread but a lot of property damage, things like that. We checked with local authorities. So far not widespread injuries or anything like that. Folks hunkering down doing their best to get through this. Later in boston they tell me it will get into the 20s. That will actually feel good which is certainly scary. Live downtown here in boston im jim smith. Back to you guys. Jim smith and the heat wave in washington. Thanks, jim. The snow wind and subzero windchills are taking a toll on travel plans for many this weekend. We report from laguardia here in new york on the large number of flight delays and cancellations this morning. Reporter good morning to you. Inside one of the terminals here at Laguardia Airport it is a packed house. Usually theres not this many people here. A lot of travelers trying to get out of towns after the massive delays and cancellations with the big winter storm that moved through the midwest and the northeast. What we are seeing is a lot of flights are getting out on time. Certainly not the case yesterday. More than 6,000 delays across the country. Nearly 3,000 flights were canceled. Some of the hardest hit airports, newark philadelphia and where we are this morning at laguardia. So passengers that are here now, one of the Bigger Airlines offering to waive change fees and encouraging passengers to check the website and check their flight status before they make their way out to the airport. A few passengers consider themselves lucky to get out today. Others may not get out until early next week. Back to you. Terrell brown, thank you. President obamas Health Care Law is once again in the courtroom just days after a major part of it took effect. The Justice Department wants an end to Sonia Sotomayors delay of the contraception portion of the bill. Jeff, good morning. Reporter good morning, anthony and venita. The injunction remains in effect. On friday, the u. S. Government argued against it. The government filing was a direct response to a lawsuit brought by an order of nuns the Little Sisters of the poor. The rule to provide Birth Control violates their religious beliefs. Sonia sotomayor agreed and issued a temporary injunction. On friday the slit tore general said they are already exempt from any requirements. Dan bloomberg represents the nuns in the lawsuit. This morally compromises us. It makes us complacent in doing something wrong. Please dont ask us to make someone else do something wrong on our behalf. The president of planned parenthood cited with the administration. The government has already said this group of nuns is not required to provide Birth Control to their employees. And theres nothing in the Affordable Care act that should go against any of their religious beliefs. Reporter the court will decide whether to extend the injunction or sotomayor can make the decision herself and even refer it to the full Supreme Court. Thanks jeff. For generations, tourists and even residents have been taking rides on the horse drawn carriages in central park here in new york. But the new mayor says he is going to make good on a Campaign Promise that puts the horses out to pasture. Michelle, good morning. Reporter good morning. For the the past two days, horse drawn carriages have been shut down due to the severe Winter Weather but carriage operators have a lot more to worry about. Its the manhattan tradition as old as central park itself. Row plant sized by everyone from woody allen to lisa simpson. So what do horse drawn carriages mean to central park and new york city . It adds to the pieces of fabric that makes the city awesome. It gives us a great view of old new york. In 1858 the contact was to be seen in the back of a horse drawn carriage like we are doing now. For steve malone its a way of life. If this goes away what will you be doing . Good question. Im a 44yearold man who has done this legally for 26 years. In reality since i was 9 years old when i used to come with my dad. Im second generation. Im basically unployable. His profession is on the line. The new mayor vowed to keep his Campaign Pledge to put the the horse drawn carriage industry out of business. Theyre not appropriate to the year 2014. Its over. We are going to quickly and aggressive ily move to make horse carriages no longer part of the landscape in new york city. Theyre not humane. He has the backing of Animal Rights activists who fought for years to ban the practice alleging operators abuse the horses and place them in danger. Activists have been trying to ban horse drawn carriages in new york city for at least 20 years now. Ali is a member of the advocacy group. Theres no way you can alter the citys environment to make it optimized for a 1200 pound animal. You cant ledge slate a horse for oncoming traffic. Exchanges horses for oldfashioned style electric cars the drivers could be trained to operate. Malone says it will never work. Its a facade. No one will come to ride an electric car. People know about us. We have the brand. We have the image. Thats what people want. Kids come to see the horse. Horsepower is still popular with tourists. And people looking to pop the question. This was where lovers came and got engaged. And still do today. Just past saturday i had two engagements and two 50year anniversaries, one was engaged in the back of the carriage. If nothing else it certainly has left an impression. Buggy ride in central park very corny. Nope. You know big from sex and the city called it corny. Yeah. But he still did it. Well malone and the drivers, members of the Teamsters Union are gearing up for a long battle with city council which can vote to shut down the industry. In the course if necessary. Steve malone said he is fighting not just for the operators here in new york city but in other cities like boston philadelphia and salt lake city. What will will actually happen to the horses . They will be put to pasture . Ny class said they have a spot in Adoption Centers all over the northeast and parts of the mid atlantic region. There are some 200 horses that would be up for adoption. So they have a spot for them. I have never done it and might not get the chance. You still have a few weeks. Its 11 minutes after the hour. Now heres a look at the weather for your weekend. Hour. Now heres a look at the leverer weather. Up next, he is brainy brash, and, oh so british. Do you mind . Like a rocket. You built a dead pig. That was this morning. Theres an idea that the gentry and the working class get along so well together in this one household. Its a bit of escapism as well. We never lost the appetite for the home country, i guess. You played new years eve with him and not long ago you were in a tribute band. Im still in a tribute band. Its been such a faeptntasy and blessing, you know, a miracle to me. So when theyre off the road with billy, that i play with me a little bit and i got help from some guys guys who look out for you, give you look out for you. Tommy burns, david rosenthal, music director for billy joels band. They helped. I got the call to do rehearsals. So he was doing rehearsals at the paramount and they needed kind of like a stunt double to come in when he wasnt going to be at rehearsals so i did the reherarsals rehearsals, and two days later he showed up at the rehearseal and i thought i was going to be off and all of a sudden i was ask dodd you have a passport and i was like whats going on. How did it feel like the first time you were on stage with him after all of this . Its unbelievable. Ive been watching him my whole life. Hes my ee dollidol. Ive been watching them my whole life. All the people i watched him playing with im playing with and its one of the most craziest things in the world. Did billy joel ask you to join the band . Yes. How did that go . We were two days into rehearsals. That was the day i showed up and they asked if i had a passport. We did one set. He walked into the room during lunch and he was peeking his way through the room and im look oh, my god, its billy joel. He was like hi mike how are you doing. Really, really kind you know. He said, you know the stuff on guitar, were going to do some accuse stick stuff, yeah, absolutely. Before you know it im rehearsing out there with him got a microphone and rehearsal gets done and he says, i need to talk to mike, and i go, oh, my god. Nerves are shot at that point. What did he say . He pulled he me back. He said i know you erie busy with the want i dont want to mess things up for you. I want to get you on the road to the uk you know. Is it possible . I cant say on the air what i said, you know im like are you kidding me . It was an amazing, amazing moment. I was talking with the Cohen Brothers a couple of weeks ago about casting you in this part. They needed a musician and an actor at the same time. They said it was like finding a needle in a haystack and then you came along. Dwlou have both of these talents . Its something that ive always done. Ive always played music. Well, ive always since about 12 years old ive been playing guitar and singing in bands and acting, and so those two things ive always kept it up. I went to juliard and kept it going. It was just a matter of right time, right place at the right time and right project. I was able to get in there. You watched the movie. Its so lovely because you get to actually hear him sing full songs which is not usual in movies. You underwent rigorous playing though you are a musician. Yeah. Its called travis playing. Its cinco pated. Its like ragtime piano. I had to immerse myself in it. I just drilled it and drilled it so when the time came i was able to do it. Sometimes you had to do 20 takes on a soojd maintain the same rhythm so they could cut in between. Yeah. It was an interesting phenomenon. The drummers of my old band would say this guy has the worst timing but i think something about this particular style of playing because your thumb is like your metronome. Because i drilled it so much out of terror it was part of me to you know i was able to not vary too much. I loved what you said what i lack for in talent i make up for in obsession. There are a lot of the same players in this movie as that movie . Yeah. Definitely john goodman and tbone very net. I feel like a lot of the kids that were very good are now the same ones that are part of this socalled folk revival. It has a lot to do with the seed that was planted there. They were great. They were open and willing to discuss any part of the process as i was, so beforehand we went through explicitly ever single scene and talked about every single sentence. I needed to know what was happening. I asked a lot of dumb questions. You mentioned T Bone Burnett and brother where art thou. You ended up playing with Justin Timber lack and mumford of mumford sons. That must have been pretty imposing playing music with them. Yeah, right. Theyre such incredible singers. Yeah, it was scary, but the thing is joe and ethan and tbone, they create a sense of community, and there really isnt much room for vanity. I think they get people philosophically aligned already, so there wasnt much of that. We had a week where we got together in one of the last analogues in the city called avatar studio. We would sit around in the studio with the lights dims and tbone would burn this wood. It was super greenwich village. Wed play the songs and joe would walk around and listen. It was the most gentle and wonderful experience. How did you identify with this character . Immediately when you read the script, did you connect with him . I did. I did connect with him. Theres a heightened quality to it. You know hes being compressed by life quite literally and i took that very literally, not only by his emotions but the way he walks, the way that he looks oust his eyes. Everything is a matter of being squeezed. And i could relate to that feeling, you know. Ive had those moments where i feel so frustrated and you want to express something, but youre just not being allowed to do it and no ones listening. You you had a number of big costars in the film but one who i understand gave you some trouble, a cat costar. Five cat costars. Playing one role. Because you cant train cats. You had to have one that would walk when you wanted it to one that would sit still, one that wouldnt have sit still thats the one i liked the least. They had to tie them to me. Tie them to you . Yeah. I had to run into subways and they didnt want the cat jumping out and getting run over. The cat didnt care that it was tied to me. It would get loose and scratch me. I dont recommend working with cats. Why was this movie on the shelf for two years . Well because you know when we finished it they took you know joe and ethan wanted to take their time making it and they wanted to get it right as opposed to try to hit some deadline to try to get it into the festivals or whatever. I remember ethan said why dont we be a little less square about it. Well edit it and when its ready, well get it out there. So they just waited till the window was right. If youre afraid of that what about grilling grapes. Just a few minutes. They get a nice one. What is this . The ba rah ta. Super creamy. Super sweet. When you get it fresh, it is unbelievable. Its absolutely delicious. I want to ask you about your background because a lot of people say you have an analytical approach to what you do in the kitchen. What does that mean . Im the son of two engineers. So instead of growing up and making things thing i grew up taking things apart. I would get a keyboard and instead of playing it, i would take it apart and see how it works but i never managed to put it back together. I think i take that same approach to food as i view it more of a puzzle and its a mental thing to me. I got kicked out of high school as a kid but i ended up at uc berkeley after trials and tribulations. And you studied math and the science. I did. The reason i was so good at math wasnt because i was so smart but i was in restaurants for so long that when you do this this, and this, hopefully its this. I took the same approach to food. I did a lot of fine dining and now as ive about profwresed in my career, ive gone simple foods as you see here. Just sort of with math instead of getting these big equations i started focusing on the very simple ones that are actually more complex to me and more interesting. Yeah, my approach is very systematic. Was there did you always have an interest in food though . No. I was, as i said a little bit of rambunctious and troubled teen. Once you get kicked out of high school at an early age, theres few places you can end up. I have the worst add d a. D. D. In the world. I did best in the restaurant. I thought, oh this is how my mind normally works. I found enough creativity and structure in the restaurant that i fell in love. I never thought of it as a career part but it was something that fit me really well. You have such a strong pedigree. I think a lot of people are surprised you chose to do pizza and doughnuts. Like you said some straightforward foods are the hardest to do. How did you transition into those foods . I was working in all these fancy restaurants and i learned so much. I took away how to look at food at not opposed to cooking techniques but i was able to say, okay now what. I kept going and going and going. Had no limitations. I thought, okay thats really great, but what is it going to be like to make it better. It was less gimmicky. To work around that kind of level of expertise was amazing at my age too. So i really i was working in these fine dining restaurants and i loved it and i had this technique, but it was never satiating or satisfying to me because i wanted to talk to people. Working with pizza was the most nostalgic and aless the most approachable. Making apple pie is the hardest in the world because everyone has something to compare it to. Chef jeff mahan, thank you.
