athletes, and thousands of fans are expected to attend. scott pelley begins our coverage. good morning, great to be with you. people are still coming to the muhammad ali center today bringing memories and momentos for muhammad ali. days like today you realize how overused the word legendary is. he will be celebrating here in louisville today. it was here that cassius clay started his boxing career that led to him becoming one of the most famous people on earth, maybe the most famous. the mayor said muhammad ali belongs to the world, but he has only one hometown. and that hometown is welcoming the world to celebrate the champ's memory. >> it was a somber moment when his body arrived at louisville's freedom hall on thursday. his wife sat in silence as islamic prayers filled the room. more than 14,000 people, many of them muslim, came to honor a man considered by many as islam's greatest ambassador. >> he was a gift to his people. his religion, his country, and ultimately, to the world. >> muhammad ali. >> he embraced the faith in 1964. and proudly carried the message of peace and unity throughout the world. >> i like louisville like it is. >> here in louisville he will make his final journey. a funeral procession will travel more than 23 miles through the streets where a young man then known as cassius clay got his start. going to his home, high school, and museum that bears beautiful morning for a procession like this. hundreds of people from his home done and around the country coming to pay homage to the champ. now the process has started, as you mentioned, and people here are excited and ready to pay their respects to the hero. you have people out here with hu ham mad muhammad ali hats and shirts. he did so much for people all around the world. >> after he is laid to rest, there will be a public memorial service later this afternoon in louisville. david is outside of the ali center. last night he called the ali family and said he changed his mind and his schedule and he arrived this morning on a red eye flight to be there in time for the procession. and the example fought his very first fight as a professional. people said prayers over the champ's body. the first time we had seen the ali family since muhammad ali died. today at the memorial we'll see president clinton, billy crystal, and will smith. we also sat down with lennox lewis earlier. >> you will carry the body of that greatest man. >> yeah. >> is there an honor bigger than that? >> no, it's a great privilege, a great honor. and you know, words can't really describe how i feel about that. and i'm happy that, you know, he is finally resting and i'm the one helping bring him to his resting place. >> was there ever a vulnerable moment you had with him? had. >> just a small one. he came over to canada and he whispered to me i used to be the champion, now you're the champion, and i said no, you're always the greatest. >> here at the young center, 300 people are here, the doors have not opened yet, the service begins at 11:00 a.m. west coast time. >> david, that was a beautiful moment, thank you so much. basketball hall of famer and six time nba champ kareem abdul jabbar. he is joining us from louisville to pay tribute to the man he calls his mentor and big brother. >> good morning. >> what are your thoughts today about your friend as we prepare to say goodbye? >> a lot of sadness, you know? i'm sorry to see him go. the last couple of years that he was alive, it was kind of tough on him to not be able to communicate the way, in his style. so you know that is -- that weighed hard on him and on all of us. we knew how he was struggling with that. but throughout all of any of the problems that he had, he and his spirit was indlarge. >> you said i admired the athlete of action but it was the man of principal that was my true role model. what did you admire most about him? >> i admired that he stuck to his principals. when he felt that the vietnamese war was immoral and illegal, he wasn't going to participate, and nothing was going to change him or push him off of that position. and he paid a big price for it. but his personal feelings were more important than the price he was paying. >> first meeting him on hollywood boulevard in 1966 when he was doing magic tricks. and you said he was a big brother to all african-americans. >> he was, he was someone that we admired. he was someone that set an example that if we will have any change in our country, we have to have the courage and determination to go out there and deal with it. and it was his friendship. i had a bad fire, my house burned to the ground, and it was tough for me. i was standing in my yard, and a car pulls up and ali gets out. he was like what happened? and i said my house is gone, as you can see. and he said look, no one got hurt, i jst lost some stuff. my son didn't get hurt. i can deal with it. and he said you're okay, everyone else is okay? good. and he just showed up and gave me some support and disappeared. he was like that. when you needed him, he was there. >> sometimes that's all it takes. >> yeah. >> for a friend to show up when you need him most. >> he had such a great sense of humor. i knew we were friends when -- >> he used to bring his kids to laker games a lot. and people gave him some birds that were training to say ali. that's all they said all of the time. they didn't say anything else, and i said do you still have those birds and he said i got rid of them. i could not sleep. i came home and once i came in ali. 3:00 in the morning, ali. so i got rid of the birds, don't say nothing. >> you shared a personal photo where he wrote a special message to you, to kareem from one legend to another, may history shine upon you. what is that like? >> it was a great hop nor. it was someone who valued friendship like that and he respected my achievement the same way i respected his. he was incredible that way. >> i spent last weekend watching a lot of tributes to him, i learned a lot of things i didn't know. he was so brave and courageous at the age of 22, what do you say about that side of him? >>. >> it is a test moan to his courage. in the height of the civil rights movement, he was going to say what he had to say, and he would be the person that he had to be. >> thank you very much for being with us this morning. we're friday is still that drive along 101 trying to get in on out of san francisco from the peninsula. look at that red. that's really slow right now because of an earlier accident. it was southbound 101 at oyster point. it was involving ten cars for a while debris on the road. it's cleared but still chevy in both directions. even heading on the lower deck of the bay bridge. so pretty backed up. different story coming into san francisco from the east bay however. the metering lights remain on but traffic has been super light at the toll plaza. and if you are traveling along 880 in oakland, this is what it looks like near the oakland airport and coliseum. moving better than into oakland. and through the livermore valley and the dublin- pleasanton area, also in the clear with a 17-minute drive time from the altamont pass. that's "kcbs traffic." here's julie. well, liz, we do have some cloud out there but take a look at this, blue skies over ocean beach. we are seeing certainly clear skies today than we did this time yesterday. temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. later today we're warming up low to mid-50s along the coast, low to mid-70s around the bay. and temperatures near 80 inland. still cool of average although we'll see more sun than yesterday. tomorrow, though, we are warming up. we'll see temperatures reaching near 90 degrees for the warmest spots saturday and a little bit cooler on sunday. sunday into monday the onshore flow returns and temperatures will gradually begin to cool first along the coast, then inland as we move towards midweek next week. ,,,,,,,, prosecutors in michigan are working to determine in a parrot can serve as a trial witness in a murder case. investigators in michigan are working to find out if a african gray parrot can be a witness to a murder. we all know parrots are smart, but could their testimony be used in court? prosecutors have not ruled it out. we took a trip of harvard university and sat down with a leader researcher and her friends to see if parrots could make al-qaedable witnesses. >> how smart is african gray parrot? >> irene runs the alex foundation and the lab on the campus of harvard university. studying this species of parrot for 40 years. >> where do you think their intelligence lying on a scale of dogs, chimpanzees, dolphins. >> they're equivalent to dolphins and chimpanzees. for a one pound parrot, the side of the brain is enormous. >> that is griffin. he is 21 years old, and he is still pretty young for a parrot. on average, they can live for 50 years in captivity. >> is it possible that a bird can hear something said in a moment of violence, retain it, and repeat it? >> it's possible. is it likely? who knows. they're less likely to learn from film or video than say from an interaction. would i say it's likely? no. possibly, yes. >> he can mimic speech, but also display the reason to ability and decipher. >> if their human friend was being attacked, would they be more traffic coming up after the break. good morning. let's take a check of the bay bridge. the toll plaza as you can see, it is a "friday light" kind of morning heading into san francisco. no big delays in the cash or the fastrak lanes. however getting there on the eastshore freeway you can see that's still jammed up through berkeley and emoryville, 37 minutes from the carquinez bridge. also very heavy traffic right now coming into and out of san francisco from the peninsula. it's all because of an early- morning wreck. southbound 101 approaching oyster point but traffic backed up early after that. even though the wreck is cleared for an hour. if you are traveling through portions of contra costa county, here's what it looks like at 4. clear right now as well as southbound 680 heading out of walnut creek. and there's an ace train delays all morning but bart, caltrain and muni are on time. wayne: i'm on tv! jonathan: it's a trip to napa!
