It is snowing heavily right now across much of new england. A travel ban is in place in massachusetts, connecticut and rhode island. Many cities and towns will not get mail today, but new jersey and most of new york state just reopened streets to traffic. This storm affects tens of millions of people. Boston and providence could have up to 2 feet of snow. A blizzard warning in long island and the new england coast. We have correspondents throughout the northeast. Im standing in times square and not get hit by a cab. The travel ban in the city and outlying areas. Only emergency vehicles on the roads. No subway, bus or rail travel. That ban lifted at 7 30 eastern time this morning because new york city was hit a glancing blow by the storm. We had over 5 inches. That was a different story on long island. For the commuters trying to make it home ahead of the ban last night, the precautions were worse. Heavy snow blanketing the roads and sidewalks. The storm dumped about a quarter of what meteorologists predicted. That was enough to bring the city that never sleeps to a standstill. For every day new yorkers, it is clear. This is not business as usual. Reporter on monday night, state officials issued a travel ban shutting down commuter and Train Services telling people to stay off the roads to make way for plows and emergency crews. It only takes two cars to get stuck and the traffic backs up and thats it. Thank you, everybody for the effort. Reporter volunteers from the red cross were on stand by through the night. They have enough disaster supplies to help 50,000 people. What we have here is a shelter cart. It has 40 cots and 80 blankets. There are 400 cots within the whole box truck. Reporter on the jersey shore, where coastal flooding is threatening areas devastated by superstorm sandy, governor christie says he is ready. We had hurricane irene and hurricane sandy. We know how to deal with the situations. Reporter the worst of the storm in new york has already passed. I dont do snow. I really dont. Reporter could take days to clean up the mess left behind. The National Weather service has recorded more than 21 inches of snow so far. The governor declared a state of emergency and for a time issued a travel ban throughout long island to keep cars off the roads and allow crews the opportunity to clear the snow. Long Island Railroad Service Services 300,000 kmutcommuters a day was suspended at midnight. Wind gusts up to 50 Miles Per Hour aliken hours are likely across the island. Winds could lead to widespread Power Outages. High tides forecast to be 2 to 3 feet higher than usual. It is steadily snowing in boston. You can see the travel ban has kept all of the cars off the roads except for plows. Here is what is going on in boston. The snow itself is fairly light and fluffy. For the most part. It has been getting heavier through the morning. This helps when you talk about Power Outages. There have been somewhere around 7,000 power out amgageoutages. That is not as many. One of the reasons is the fluffy snow doesnt weigh down the power lines and trees as it could. They issued an order for everyone else to stay off the streets. Prosecutors say one suspect posed as a Bank Employee and tried to send information back to russias intelligence agency. Jeff begay is in washington and tells us about what they had planned. The Justice Department stated he was employed by a russian bank undercover for the russian kgb. Two others attempted to recruit new yorker as they tried to gather u. S. Documents to help the russian government collect information about potential u. S. Economic sanctions against russian banks. U. S. Officials say ultimately the plan that used coded words failed.
