>> the white house confirms sunday peter kassig's death. >> isis still holds another hostage, a young female aid worker. >> red flag warning in effect for southern california. >> millions feeling the freeze from texas to the east coast. >> the doctor who contracted ebola in sierra leone has died at a nebraska hospital. >> the u.s. state department has become the latest target of online hackers. officials say no classified information was affected. >> at least three nfl teams got surprise visits from federal drug enforcement agents. >> investigating whether staffs are violating laws governing the distribution of painkillers. >> a norovirus outbreak on a cruise ship in california. >> people walking around with little buckets of sanitizer. >> if you have a sweet tooth, brace yourself. >> two of the largest chocolate makers could be running out of chocolate. >> i can't even think about that. >> in italy, hundreds of fireworks going off at the same time. it was an accident. >> -- all that -- >> kevin harvick. he's going to do it. he's going to win the nascar sprint cup championship. >> oh, big hit. >> sanders gets walloped. >> look at that. >> bill belichick's guys really shut them down. >> -- and all that matters -- >> it's at example of the sorry state of american politics. where people take money for things in which they don't believe and whether it's good for the american people is not even a question. >> -- on "cbs this morning." a news anchor in australia wore the same suit on air every day for a year to prove a point about the double standard for men and women. >> he claims that not one single viewer had noticed or complained. >> you change your undies and socks. you don't wear undies, okay that was something we really didn't need. >> it was a good point you were trying to make. >> announcer: this morning's "eye opener" presented by toyota. let's go places. welcome to "cbs this morning." an indiana aid worker is the latist victim of isis executioners. the parents of peter kassig plan to speak about their son today. the terrorist group said last month that he would be the next western prisoner to die. >> president obama put out a statement using the muslim name kassig adopted in captivity. he said quote, abdul rahman was taken from us in an act of pure evil by a terrorist group. margaret brennan has more. >> good morning. good morning to viewers in the west. after holding him captive for more than a year isis announced the murder of the 26-year-old american aid worker and former army ranger. a man secretary kerry called courageous and self-less to the core. in this latest isis video, a masked executioner stands other the severed head of a man he identified as peter kassig. >> this is peter edward kassig, a u.s. citizen of your country. >> reporter: the aid worker from indiana was captured last year while delivering emergency supplies in eastern syria. he's the third american to be executed since isis began beheading westerners this summer but unlike previous isis execution videos kassig is foot seen addressing the camera and his killer is not in the same desolate desert location. this time announcing that he's in dabiq, northern syria. he speaks with a british accent, much like the one that appeared in past execution videos. they also show the beheading of syrian soldiers and issues another threat to president obama. >> tomorrow we will slaughter your soldiers. >> reporter: kassig was murdered despite public pleas from his family and friends throughout the middle east. an appeal for mercy that fell on deaf ears. on sunday his parents released a statement. "we're incredibly proud of our son. we will work every day to keep his legacy alive as best we can." in an interview from cbs news last month, i asked kassig's parents about a letter they received from their son after he had been taken. in it, he acknowledged he might not make it home. >> what did you feel when you read that, paula? >> i felt -- i remembered how he always told me because he knew i worry. he said, mom, don't worry about me. no matter what happens, i will be okay because i am doing what i am called to do. i love what i'm doing. >> in that letter he said if i go down for this, i want everyone to know i went down for a good cause. what more can you ask? >> now, ed and paula kassig have asked supporters to remember their son by donating to another aid group that's providing emergency medical help in syria. as for isis they are still believed to hold other hostages including an american woman. but unlike in past videos, their identities were not revealed. >> margaret, thank you. a sad heartbreaking story. thank you. many in the west are waking up to chilly november weather today. chilly from the pacific northwest to the northeast. minneapolis plunged to 1 degree overnight and it's 5 degrees in brookings, south dakota. even in amarillo, texas, it's struggleing in the snow this morning. from union, ohio. >> good morning. the people in the midwest are used to freezing temperatures and winter storms but now it's packing a winter punch that's affecting millions of people this morning, and winter is still over a month away. this latest storm which has dropped snow and ice from oregon to ohio and as far south as texas isn't weather you would typically expect for this time of year. people who would normally spend their days raking and bagging leaves are instead shoveling driveways. here in comb lulllumn bus, heavy snow fell overnight, complicating the morning commute. crews are out trying to clear roads. and although many of the streets have been treated in preparation for the storm, the precipitation paired with the plummeting temperatures created slippery driving conditions. >> whoa. i've got a wreck that just happened. >> across the wide ranging storm system, cars and trucks peppered the sides of highways, the results of slick snow-covered roads. in st. louis, the city's iconic arch was covered in a layer of snow. as the snow and ice exit towards the northeast mostly in the form of rain frigid temperatures will settle in throughout the region in the coming days with lows expected to hover in the 20s. even portions of the deep south will feel the chill. now, we can tell you, temperatures are expected to dip. near single digits by tonight. that means crews in columbus and throughout the region will be working extra to make sure the roads don't completely freeze over. >> tino, thanks. an apparent tornado in the florida panhandle damaged a state prison and injured two people. meteorologist danielle niles of our boston station wbz is tracking conditions across the country. danielle, good morning. >> good morning, and good morning to our viewers in the west. a lot going on in the nation today. areas of snow from the ohio valley stretching up to the northeast. at the same time severe weather ongoing across the south. damaging wind gusts. heavy rain. isolated tornadoes from northern florida. stretching east to the coastline of georgia and south carolina as well. at the same typeime, the west coast dealing with critical fire weather. we have the santa ana winds kicking up. northeast gusts to 45 miles per hour. combine that with the very dry air. means low humidity and red flag warnings in effect through southern california through the day today. high temperatures very cold in the northern plains. only in the teens. 49 in seattle today. 68 in san francisco. low 70s in l.a. only in the 30s from salt lake city, stretching east towards denver. >> thank you so much. we learned a doctor being treated for ebola died this morning. dr. salia was critical when he arrived saturday. a hospital official said he had advanced symptoms of the disease. this hospital previously treated two other ebola patients. both survived. salia worked as a surgeon in sierra leone and it's not clear how he contracted the virus. his wife and two children live in maryland. he is the second person to die of ebola in the united states. and the nfl got a surprise after sunday's games. federal drug agents showed up with questions for some of the team's medical units. >> the dea is investigating prescription drug abuse. an nfl spokesperson said quote, our teams cooperated with the dea and we have no information to indicate irregularities were found. "washington post" columnist sally jenkins. what happened yesterday? >> pop quiz. pretty interesting one. it's unprecedented. the dea hasn't done this to the nfl before. they've looked at individual teams for loose practices with prescription drugs, but never anything this dramatic and comprehensive. >> what triggered it? >> a suit filed in may by almost 1,300 former nfl players. some of them very recently retired. detailing pretty horrifying practices with prescription drugs, heavy-duty painkillers like percocet and pecrodan being passed out on team planes by trainers not authorized to dispense medication, that sort of thing. >> sally, "the washington post" has been on top of this story for a while. you guys have had an incredible investigation about the use of these opioids by nfl players. >> yes. we did a five-party series last year with my partner where they looked at this sort of inverted hippo cratic oath in the nfl. where you actually medicate players to get them back on the field to play through injuries. retired nfl players abuse painkillers at a rate four times higher than their peers. it's very possible that the dea's interest in this is they think the nfl is creating addicts. >> how soon will we know what they found? who would be responsible? the people who take them or those who prescribed it? >> doctors have a set of very strict laws governing how painkillers can be transported, dispensed, who's allowed to handle them and touch them. nfl trainers are not allowed to dispense medication and yet there's a lot of evidence they've been doing that. so it doesn't matter if the players want the meds. the doctors aren't supposed to give them to them except under certain circumstances. >> how soon will we know what they found? >> well, they're in the middle of an investigation. and one of the little known things that came out yesterday is that the dea is working with the u.s. attorney's office in the southern district of new york a very heavy-hitting prestigious arm of the justice department. so i think it's a months' long investigation. our information is they're not at the start or at the end, they're in the middle. >> thank you. thank you, sally. >> sure. >> good to see you. creating more tension in ferguson, missouri. it includes the police radio communications just before and after the teenager shooting. the tape comes as a grand jury considers charges against officer darren wilson. michelle miller is at the prosecutor's office in clayton, missouri, where a decision could come at any time. michelle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to our viewers in the west. the encounter between officer wilson and michael brown took just 90 seconds. 90 seconds that have led to months of protests. new audio recordings and video are helping to establish a timeline of events but it's failing to answer many crucial questions on what actually happened. >> it's going to be a black male in a white t-shirt. >> reporter: police radio communications obtained by "the st. louis-post dispatch" shed more light on what happened on august 9th. officer darren wilson first approached michael brown shortly after 12:02 p.m. less than 90 seconds later brown was shot and another officer radioed for backup. >> get us self-moreseveral more units over here there's going to be a problem. >> reporter: also obtained, video showing officer wilson leaving the ferguson police department hours later, seemingly uninjured, a contradiction to what police originally said. ben crump is the brown family attorney. >> if you gotta blowout fracture to your eye socket, you're not just going to be walking around not holding your eye. we don't see him holding his eye anywhere in that video. >> no justice, no peace! >> reporter: on sunday protesters braved the cold and snow on the streets of st. louis. >> this is what democracy looks like. >> reporter: lying down in chalkout lines of bodies and blocking traffic, to commemorate 100 days since michael brown's death. >> we just wanted them to know if the weather's good bad, ugly, we'll be out here because it means that much to us. >> reporter: the protest, a far cry from the turmoil that shook the nation only months ago. there's fear violence could resurface as a grand jury decides whether to indeedict the officer responsible for the shoeing the unarmed team. >> there have been several days for training at every level. we have multiple police jurisdictions that are trying to understand what they can and cannot do. >> reporter: ferguson police chief tom jackson says that if the grand jury does not indict officer darren wilson that he could be cleared to return to work. >> all right, michelle, thank you. pope francis this morning announced he'll make his first trip to the united states as head of the catholic church. he'll attend the world mass next september. more than 1 million people are expected to attend. the trip could also include a stop in new york city but plans have not yet been finalized. this morning, the state department is repairing its computer systems after suspected cyber attack. hackers have hit the white house, the united states postal service, and the national weather service. the state department's classified systems were foot affected. it's unclassified e-mail was shut down friday. it could be back up as early as today. new video shows the fiery wreckage just moments after the downing of airlines flight 17. it shows just how close the debris came to some of the homes. many on the ground first thought it was a ukrainian military plane. mark phillips saw some of the aftermath firsthand earlier this year. he is in london. mark, good morning. >> good morning. it's four months to the day since the malaysian air flight was shot down most likely by a russian-supplied ground to air missile fired by east ukrainian rebels. but proving it has been the problem. investigators are now finally getting their hands on some of the evidence. this may have some of the trappings of a serious crime scene investigation but it's much too late for that. no amount of security and high visibility vests can make up for months of neglect and manipulation of a highly compromised crime scene. still, the wreckage of the malaysian airplane or ways left of it is finally being removed from the farmland of eastern ukraine. the plan is to take it back to holland where dutch investigators will continue to look into the inquiry of the crash. time is proving more difficult on what happened. evidence on the ground points to the plane having been shot down by a surface-to-air missile. but a lot of the wreckage has long since disappeared. really moved perhaps by scavengers. perhaps by those trying to obscure the causes of the crash. kyle bailey is an aviation expert. >> they're going to do a forensic analysis of the metal to try to detect explosive residue on there. so they're going to do the best with what they have. quite frankly, what they have might be very limited. >> reporter: an examination of the wreckage after the crash showed it to be peppered with holes made by high-velocity shrapnel of the sort that would come from a surface-to-air missile. new amateur footage, shot apparently from a nearby village, has emerged, showing the immediate aftermath of the crash. the lives of those on malaysia aircraft 17 ended quickly. proving how they died will take more time. the russians have long floated the story the plane was shot down not by one of their missiles but by a ukrainian air force jet. that's a version of events given little credence outside of russia. examining the wreckage of the plane may be able to determine exactly what hit it. norah. >> all right, mark thank you. the cruise ship crown princess is under way this morning after more than 170 people fell ill with norovirus. the ship had to be thoroughly cleaned in southern california. the outbreak began after a month-long trip to hawaii and tahiti. it is the second time in less than a year the ship has been hit by the virus. in april, more than 100 people got sick on the same ship off the coast of california. for the third time this year, a security scare at the brooklyn bridge. a french tourist faces criminal charges this morning. police say he climbed over a fence to take photographs. he made it on to a cable beam before they got him. in august a russian tourist, you may recall used one of those cables to get to the very top. in july you may remember, a pair of german artists made it all the way to the top and replaced american flags with white ones. so sounds like they saw some security issues they need to deal with. very scary stuff. >> very scary, yes. all right it is 7:19. ahead on "cbs this morning,"
