This morning doctors at a hospital in germany say they dont know how long his treatment will take. He was exchanged for five prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay. His parents sent him messages of love and support. Five years is a seemingly endless long time, but youve made it. I imagine you are more patient and compassionate than ever. You are free. The handoff was carefully scripted with both the american and taliban sides speaking directly to one another, reciting lines that had been agreed upon ahead of time. It began when the taliban called a prearranged number to give the u. S. The location on the border between pakistan and afghanistan, where the handoff would take place. About two dozen american commandos went in under the cover of a small armada of helicopter gun ships and surveillance aircrafts. Searching for any signs of a taliban ambush. A larger force of commandos were standing by in case there was any trouble. They took every possible precaution we could take, through intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, having enough helicopters, doing everything we possibly could do. Reporter the taliban could have forced bergdahl to wear a suicide vest. Based on a proof of life video the taliban had isnt in january but which was never released publicly, he was believed to be in failing health. Still, he was able to walk on his own to the helicopter that would carry him to freedom. After five years in enemy hands, he had difficulty speaking english but he wrote out the letters s. F. Mean special forces on a paper plate. Yes, one of the commandos shotted in his ear, weve been looking for you for a long time. Knowing that he was free at last, he broke down and wept. He is not likely to receive a heros welcome. One described him at worst a deserter, at best a stupid kid who caused us to spend great energy and resources to bring him home. Norah . And critics believe this prisoner swap is the wrong way to bring bergdahl home. They accuse president obama of breaking the law and possibly causing the seizure of more prisoners. Reporter good morning. The rules are new and the negotiations even protracted ones with a third country are the only way to win the release of a prisoner of war like Bowe Bergdahl. Was the price too high and did the white house violate the law by failing to inform congress . Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl is free. For the white house, that is reason enough to celebrate. When terrorists take an american prisoner, that prisoner still is a u. S. Serviceman or woman. We still have a sacred obligation to bring that person back. We did so and thats whats to be celebrated. Reporter the u. S. Gave up five senior taliban fighters former live held captive at the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, cuba. They will live in qatar under close watch, unable to leave the country for one year. Arizona senator john mccain. These are the hardest of the hard core, the highest of the high risk people. It is disturbing that these individual would have the ability to reenter the fight and they are big, high level people, possibly responsible for the deaths of thousands. So many of us are concerned with what really is a break of u. S. Policy of not negotiating with terrorists. Reporter democrats argue the bergdahl case is not new. This is a prisoner of war. Its much difficult when youre negotiating with the enemy over prisoners of war. Reporter president obama did not notify congress about the prisoner swap, even though federal law requires a 30day notice for congress to evaluate the risks of releasing terror detainees from Guantanamo Bay. We had reason to be concerned this was an urgent and acute situation, that his life could be at risk, we did not have 30 days to wait. And had we waited and lost him, i dont think anybody would have forgiven the United States government. Reporter the white house has been fighting with congress for more than a year over its fle flexibility to release Guantanamo Bay prisoners. In the end the president decided he had the authority himself to act alone. Charlie . Let me talk one second about the five detainees from Guantanamo Bay, who were released. Who were they and what might they do once they get back and spend a year in qatar . In one case you had the deputy chief of staff for the military, an intelligence chief, an individual in essence in charge with relationships between al qaeda and other terrorist groups. These were deemed to be highly dangerous individual. Its part of the reason they still remained in guantanamo. Chances are theyre going to reconnect with the network and at a minimum serve as pawns in the taliban agenda and as a fundraising mechanism for that organization. To hear they wanted these five back. Their statement suggested they were happy this deal was made. Now we have to see what conditions they live under in qatar. Im not so sure theyre going to be constrained the way we would want necessarily. This, change represented a rare diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and the taliban. Fascinating to hear the special forces were on the phone with the taliban negotiating all these details. What does this mean, you think, for the future of afghanistan, for the future of talks with the taliban . Youre right. It is an instance of a material event that results in the discussions that have been had with the taliban for some time. The administration has been trying to get to this point for some time, since 2011. What this does as a minimum is it builds trust between the parties and well see what happens now moving forward between the taliban and the afghan government, which was not a part of these discussions. Minutes from now at 7 30 pacific, the head of the epa will outline a plan to cut power plant conditions blamed for global warming. This is americas first ever policy to limit those emissions. The epa says power plants are the largest source of greenhouse gasses in the u. S. A San Francisco man is on the run this morning from the fbi. They think he could be armed with explosives. Agents raided the apartment of Ryan Kelly Chamberlain on saturday. Bob orr is in washington with the nationwide alert. Reporter good morning, charlie. This began when the fbi developed Source Information that Ryan Kelly Chamberlain might have explosive in his apartment. The fbi with hazmat teams searched his apartment. They appeared to find Component Parts that could be used in making bombs. Sources say there were no completed operational devices found inside that home. Earlier reports suggest a potentially toxic substance ricin was discovered but Law Enforcement Officials Say that does not appear to as case. The materials are all now at an fbi lab for additional analysis. The bullet continue warns that chamberlain should be armed and dangerous. There is some fear he might be carrying explosives. He was last seen saturday. Now the fbi says it looking for a while Nissan Altima with either california or texas plates. Police are watching train stations and airports. He sat down with the father of the gunman. Martinez said we plan to Work Together so that other families such as ours will not suffer as we have. This was a private conversation between grieving fathers who have reached common ground. Martinez is calling on congress to pass stricter gun laws. Investigators outside boston are searching for evidence in the wreckage of a corporate jet. Saturdays crash former nba and nhl owner louis katz. All seven people on board died, including 72yearold philanthropist and businessman lewis katz. Just days earlier he inked an 88 million deal to gain full control of the philadelphia enquirer with his partner, jerry lindfest. Shocked, sorrow. Those two words sum it up. This morning federal investigators are looking into another deadly plane crash, this one captured on video. An air force pilot was performing maneuvers when he lost control. That pilot was the only victim. The search is suspended for six climbers presumed dead on washingtons mount rainier. Falling ice makes recovery too dangerous for crews. The climbers vanished in a dangerous area known as liberty ridge. It is about 13,000 feet high. The National Park service confirmed on saturday evening what many had feared. The six hikers who went missing last wednesday were likely killed in a 3,300 foot fall near the partys last known location. We dont know if they were on some ice that collapsed, we dont know if a small avalanche occurred. Rescuers found tents and clothes in a debris field but no body. They said there is no viable chance of survival from such a fall. Authorities have not released the names of all the climbers, but the leader was identified as matt hegman, a seasoned veteran who claimed rainier more than 50 times. He worked for the same hiking company that lost five sherpas on Mount Everest this spring when 16 climbers were killed in an avalanche. Mark mehenny was one of the hikers on the expedition. He posted this picture of the climbing route on his Facebook Page in april commenting nothing will be easy on this climb. Experienced mountaineer rich drafs climbed to that same route in 2008. This route once you get part way in, youre kind of stuck. You have to keep going. Its very difficult to descend. Reporter this marks the deadliest accident since 11 climbers died. His parents say whatever happened they say the man they know is full of integrity. Im proud of how much you wanted to help the Afghan People and what you were willing to do to go to that length. Bob bergdahl, his father, grew that beard in honor of his son and took to the language of bowes captors. Its remarkable. What comes through is knowing what he has been going through, wherever he was, held captive by the taliban. He has the stedstness of their report. For everyone else this may be political but for them thats their son and theyre certainly laying the groundwork for him to come home. And conscious of what hes been through in terms of waiting to have a phone call when hes ready for it. Theres so much more to this story and well continue to cover it. We should also point out this morning golfer Phil Mickelson is keeping on schedule planning to compete this week in memphis. He denies any wrongdoing after reports that he is involved of Insider Trading. Carl icahn and Billy Walters are also involved in this. They have been looking at conspiracy trades in stocks of clorox made nearly three years ago by several investors. Mickelson, icahn, and walters are the most highprofile names linked to the probe. Phil mickelson finished well behind the leaders at the memorial tournament in ohio this weekend but it was his stock trades in 2011 that attracted the attention of federal authorities. Mickelson, winner of three masters tournaments said he is cooperating with investigators. Honestly ive about not done anything wrong. Im not going to walk around any other way. Reporter at issue are stock trades zbik mickelson and walters around the time that carl icahn announced a failed takeover bid of the company in 2011. Wall street journal reporter michael helped break the story. When it became public, the options became valuable and people made a lot of money very quickly. What the investigation is looking at is whether icahn tipped off walter and whether walters tipped off mickelson. He made a name for himself as ruthless. Icahn says he does not know Phil Mickelson but does admit to knowing Billy Walters. Hes perhaps the most successful gambler in las vegas. He declient to comment to cbs this morning. But in 2011 he told 60 minutes he had been the victim of shady dealings on wall street. And i bought a lot of enron stolk once and i got wingled. I bought a lot of world comstock, got swindled. Tycoon stock, got swindled. He said in statement we are always very careful to observe all legal requirements in all of our activities. I am very proud of my 50year unblemished record and i have never gifrp out inside information. Criminal charges have not been file and insider trades cases are notoriously difficult to prove. Its highly difficult to bridge it. They did not cooperate with the government it could be a few years in prison finance they were convicted or pleaded guilty. Maybe no more than three or four years. None of the agencies involved in the clorox Insider Trading investigation would comment. The wall street journal reports that publicity around the globe has derailed efforts to deploy secret wire taps which have been key in successful prosecution of Insider Trading case. That leak was damaging for them. It could end up being damaging, yes. I get the impression theres more to come on this. They tend to play out for quite a long time. Thank you. Every june cancer doctors meet in chicago to talk about new approaches to cancer and go over the results of the past year. Instead of giving hormonal therapy which has been the standard for 75 year, they added chemotherapy early instead of lauter in the disease and they prolonged survival by close to 14 months. Well, the talks restarted around early december, around the same time that defense secretary chuck hagel met with the new qatari emir in doha. This was months after the taliban released a video showing Bowe Bergdahl to be alive but in frail health. That really prodded the administration to act. A previous qatari broker deal to swap bergdahl had broken down months before, just the previous summer, but this time the taliban was ready to trade and the administrations position was that this would be a step towards a potential peace deal. So the decision to move ahead really just came in the past few weeks after the qataris helped sort out security arrangements for the five taliban fighters to stay in that country for a year. Now, u. S. Policy doesnt allow for direct negotiation with terrorists, but president obama was able to bypass that by telling u. S. Diplomats to deal with qatar as a third party. So its leaders have really tried to carve out a diplomatic role for that small, rich country to become more of a regional power. In fact, the qataris allow taliban leaders to live in doha and even built them a Political Office there that was supposed to be used for previous round of failed peace talks. Margaret, what role will the qatari government play Going Forward, do you think . Reporter gayle, the administrations goal is to broker a peace deal to get them to lay down arms, accept the rights of women and recognize the afghan constitution and work with the new government. Whether the qataris can successfully mediate that level of deal remains the big question, but theyre going to try. Thats exactly what they like to do in terms of playing out their role in the area. Retired air force colonel lee ellis knows the challenges bergdahl faces. He was also a prisoner of war held by North Vietnam for five and a half years. Colonel, good morning. Good morning, how are you . Im well. Tell me what youre thinking as you hear about Bowe Bergdahl and the recovery he will face. Well, the first thing i thought about was my parents and what they went through during my five and a half years, so i can really relate to bowes parents and their excitement of having him coming home. I think for bowe, the thing that i realized once i got out was that my normal was no longer the real normal. What i had been living in was really an unusual world and really not the typical world that you would experience here in america. And what does that do to you . Well, i dont think i realized it fast enough in retrospect. I really had expectations that everybody back home was going to be perfect because that was the way i had been remembering them. The country was perfect, my family was perfect, in reality nobody is perfect. So coming home with an attitude of grace and being accepting of others not being perfect would be helpful for him. I think thats been a process for me over the years. Colonel, what is the most important thing that friends, family and strangers can do for bowe when he gets home . Everyone is so excited, they want to talk to him, they want to touch him, they want to feel him, what should they do . I think just communicate to him that hes valued and important and that theyre glad hes back and just that theyre there for him. Right now immediately he wont know what he needs. Hell be so overwhelmed with so much coming after him. But just to know theyre there. When hes ready to talk or wants to talk or needs to talk, that theyre there and theyll just listen. I think that would be great. And then hes going to have to find some good connections with people that understand where hes been and what hes been through that can relate to him and listen to him. How do you survive where hes been and what hes been through . I think you always survive everything one day at a time. You keep walking forward until you come out the other side. Hope is so important. We heard hope this morning coming out of his hometown. People talked about hope. You can never give up hope. You have to believe that some day theres going to be a better day and you keep moving forward toward that day. You know, bowes going to have a lot of difficulty coming home. Life is not easy for any of us and hes going to have to work through those experiences also. Thats where hes going to need help. I would say probably hes going to need some counseling. That would be good for him in helping him. Hes going to have some degree of ptsd also. You were held with senator john mccain. So there were several of you p. O. W. S together. Bowe bergdahl was the only american p. O. W. So he was alone. Do you think that will complicate his recovery . You said that he can barely speak english. His father said he can barely speak english. Yes, i do think it will complicate it quite a bit. We had a couple of guys in china held more than five years and several in solitary confinement several years but they did know there was some support around. I think for bowe its going to be much more difficult because he was so alone and knowing who to trust and who not to trust and just feeling faith in letting his hair down a little bit. I do think it will complicate it significantly. Colonel ellis, do you think the government should have done this . Beg your pardon . Do you think the u. S. Government should have done this, made this exchange . Well, i dont know that i know enough now. Im a little bit concerned about it. I think there are a couple of issues here. One is negotiating with terrorists, and two is the issue with the law. And thirdly is really what is the message it sends around the world . Im certainly happy that bowe is home but im also a little bit concerned because actions send messages around the world and this message, well have to wait and see how it plays out, but right now im a little bit concerned about it. The fbi says its the largest in floridas history and 48 hours tracy smith shows us the long battle for justice. Shes a smart kid, shes resourceful, and if shes in trouble, she ee going to be doing everything to get out of it. Reporter for 25 years pat sessions has been searching for his daughter tiffany. I pushed and pushed so many people for so long they dont know how long ill do it. Reporter it all began on february 9th, 1989, when tiffany, a junior at the university of florida, went out for her daily power walk and disappeared. Jim eckert was one of the lead investigators in the case. We didnt have a body, we didnt have a weapon, we didnt have a witness. This woman literally vanished off the face of the earth. Reporter at the time, Sadie Darnell was just a young cop. Even though she was never actually assigned to the case, sadie would mail and fax pat words of encouragement. September 15th, 1995, patrick, i know this must be difficult for you to maintain a constant struggle for tiffanys case. I always believed it can and will be solved. I have loyalty to you. The overall goal is for you to have tiffany back. Reporter throughout the year there were massive searches, false leads, a 250,000 reward, and several extortion attempts. I knew that things were not looking good. Reporter but pat sessions never gave up and neither did Sadie Darnell. So in 2006 when darnell was elected the first female sheriff in the county she set up a cold case unit and made solving the tiffany sessions case a priority. You need to lift up every rock, peel back every layer. She hired detective kevin allen. Hes one of the best ive ever seen. Income, i said, where has he been all my career. She told me very matter of factly i want this case solved during my tenure here. And she told him she wanted him to focus on one man, a convict by the name of paul rose.
