There were no survivors but there was a big mystery. Germanwings flight 9525 crashed just below that high peak behind me. It was airbus 320 a work horse of a plane that had a great Safety Record and had flown this route many times. Just as it reached cruising altitude about half way to its journey from barcelona the airbus began a steep descent. Eight minutes later it slammed into the ground. Among the 144 passengers were 16 german students on a school trip. And three americans. Yvonne selke and her daughter emily on vacation together. And Robert Oliver calvo a businessman who lived in spain. Calvos father said his family was coping by remembering a life lived, not lost. Instead of focusing our minds and hearts on that last those last nine or ten minutes we prefer to think about the 37 years that weve been together. But those fateful nine or ten minutes were very much the focus of the french forensic specialists who combed through the debris and within hours found the cockpit voice recorder. Its content shocked the world. Suggest that the 27yearold Andras Lubitz was left alone in the cockpit when the pilot took a bathroom break. He locked the pilot out set the plane on a crash course. The victims probably didnt realize what was happening until the very end said the french prosecutor. Because only hear screams in the final moments. The silence that followed will haunt their victims families forever. Some traveled to france for a Memorial Ceremony near the crash site. While in germany, where Andreas Lubitz lived police found doctors notes suggested he was ill and shouldnt have been at work. Friends said he suffered from depression. But we may never know what made a young man who loved flying and competitive running decide not only to commit suicide on a remote Mountain Side but mass murder, too. Osgood just curious talks about his eclectic search, scott simon of National Public radio who begins by expressing a little curiosity of his own. I say this with respect. What the hell does a producer do . A producer is supposed to generate an idea for a movie. And then theyre supposed to create the team greet group of people who are going to make this movie. Within that team the producer has to have a Creative Vision and a fiscal vision. And they have to adhere to both things. Thats the most coherent answer ive ever heard. Thank you. And brian grazer produces. Grazer has made movies about astronauts trapped in space. Houston, we have a problem. Geniuses with troubled minds. And scholars who crack ancient codes. The films hes made have won oscars dazzled audiences and earned more than 13 billion. Hes produced Television Shows including 24, arrested development and this years break out hit empire. Through it all ron howard has been grazers friend and business partner. It is kind of an odd couple relationship in a way. A relationship thats outlasted most hollywood marriages. Including all three of grazers. Its probably because weve never really taken it for granted. Never said this is it for all time. They met in the early 1980s. Grazer was an aspiring producer, howard a sitcom icon who wanted to direct. We made two movies in a row night shift and splash that were brians ideas that were creatively fun exciting, they were successful. Whats your name . Its hard to say in english. How many nos did flash get . Flash got seven, eight hundred nos. Because they didnt want to do a mermaid movie. That mermaid movie played a splash. Stars of tom hanks and daryl hannah. And brian grazer a surprise success. Grazer had trouble reading as a boy. But his grandmother sonya didnt just see the ds and fs on his report card. She identified my strength which was to ask questions, to dig inside of subjects, dig inside of people. She told me that that would have a great value in my life. And it did. Grandma sonya encouraged his curious mind. I think that we all absolutely have curiosity. It brings about knowledge. Its energizing. Its spiritually empowering. It makes us more interesting as people. Which is why for 30 years now, brian grazer has written notes to famous strangers to ask them to have what he calls a curiosity conversation. Hes talked to scientists politicians, artists and entrepreneurs, jonas salk oprah winfrey, steve jobs. His new book a curious mind published by cbss simon and shoeser is less about the famous films hes made than conversations he sought. Why did you write this book and not a memoir . I think writing a memoir in some way suggests that you figured out life. And i definitely didnt figure out life. But i thought the process of curiosity was really worth writing about. These conversations grazer arranges cant be scripted like a movie. I remember i used to ask andy war hole why with you painting campbells soup cans . Do they look beautiful to you . He goes, i like them. Never answered any questions. Dr. Edward teller agreed to talk to him even though the father of the Hydrogen Bomb told him he hadnt seen the movie since dumb bow. Are you ever intimidated by anybody . Thats a good question. Ive been intimidated, yes. Ive been intimidated. By . The first one that comes to mind is george w. Bush. I was little intimidated. Not every conversation has a hollywood ending. Grazer flew across the country to talk to isaac as move the Science Fiction writer hand his wife. They ordered two ginger ales. By the time they hit their lips they were saying were leaving. How could you leave . Well, we can see you dont know enough about robotics or the subjects that live inside Science Fiction. Were they right . I thought they were. I dont think i knew enough about his work. In 2001 grazer and a few friends visited cuba and had a conversation with fidel castro. He just speaks kind of nonstop about without a breath. When did he take his first breath after about three and a half hours he said, how do you do your hair . Over the years grazers electroshock of hair has become like castros cigar a personal signature. So we were curious. Why the hair . Why the hair . About 18 years ago i jumped out of a Swimming Pool with my daughter and i popped my hair up and my daughter goes, oh, my, god, thats so cool. I wouldnt know who i would be if any do my hair like this. He learns from his conversations may wind up in a film. But not directly. Grazer talked to jim lovell the commander of apollo 13. But it was his conversation with a chilean activist named Veronica De Negri who had been tortured. Who made the story of survival in space come alive. We all knew before seeing that movie that they make it back. But its how they make it back, how they reached inside of their own soul to find resources that they never thought existed was sort of the same thing that veronica did when she was tortured in chile i met her probably 10, 12 years before that. So you often dont know how these little dots get connected when youre on this journey of curiosity. Ron howard came along on a few curiosity conversations, but just out of curiosity. These conversations are never about earning favors or, you know, or asking for any kind of business advantage. Its really an honest conversation. Brian grazers santa monica home is airy, sleek and tastefully plush. But he keeps a touch of boyhood in the back yard. I do love the swing. You want to sit in it . The swing, symbolic value. End of late night tv era. That was the night jack paar retired as the host ever the tonight show on nbc. Paar had become the host in 1957 and had quickly reshaped it in his own unique image. May i ask you too naive a tough question right off the back . Osgood he talked to guests like john f. Kennedy and richard nixon. He welcomed countless celebrities including zsa zsa gabor, salvador dali. His trademark vow of truthful storytelling became a catch phrase. It happened to me, i kid you not. There was no kidding around in february of 1960 when nbc edited a relatively inoffensive bathroom joke out of paars pretaped show. There must be a better way of making a living than this. Osgood jack paars walk out triggered a media sensation. And an eventual apology by the top nbc brass. Heres jack osgood three weeks later paar turned to a standing villanova vision from the studio audience. I was saying before i was ripped before i was interrupted. I believe my last words were there must be a better way of making a living than this. Well, i have looked. [ laughter ] and there isnt. Osgood two years later jack paar retired from the tonight show for good. He did go on to host a weekly prime time show for a time he never regained the heights. He died in 2004 at the age of 85. But in many ways late night tv hosts of our own time still perform in his shadow. What are these . Fingers. Fingers yes. [laughter] osgood next. Did you ever say why me . I never cried during chemotherapy or raid occasion. A young artist with an inner visit vision. You got to wonder looking at these paintings their vibrant colors and deep textures. How does this artist see the world . Truth is, he really cant. 21yearold jeff hanson is legally blind. He also has a few other physical and mental challenges but that hasnt stopped him or apparently even slowed him down. I have done 1400 paintings to date. How do you keep track . My mom. My mom keeps track for me. Mom is julie hanson. Shes helped turn the basement of their kansas city home into a rainbow splattered assembly line. The man in the pink covered surgical scrubs is dad dr. Al hanson head of the e. R. At a local hospital. This is better. Sometimes dad helps load up the putty knife, jeff does the rest. Its a family business. And something no one here ever thought would happen. When hal and julie hanson were married, in 199 they were blessed with a healthy baby who grew into a healthy kid. Jeffrey where are you going . All seemed well until little jeff started bumping into things. He couldnt see that there was a curb or stairway. We fall down it. We realized hes not seeing a lot. Their only child had a genetic disorder called neurofirbomotosis. The diseased caused a brain tumor that was stunting his growth and shelly robbing him of his sight. One night i particularly remember. Hal loves astronomy. He wanted to show the child his stars and teach him. Stepped away from the telescope he looked up said, do you see stars when you look up with your eyes . And i said, yes. Millions of stars. He said, i dont see any. He rilelized his sky doesnt have any stars. No stars. And not much fun. As doctors fought to shrink his tumor and save what little vision he had left. Did you ever get down . Did you ever say why me . I never cried during chemotherapy or radiation. Just smiled your way through . Exactly. Of i definitely smiled. To distract jeff during chemo julie would have him use water colors to decorate little note cards. As he painted something inside him clicked. To me it was nothing more than kid hard. I didnt see any genius to it. It would be something that you would put on the refrigerator with a magnet and forget it in couple of days it would make it to the crash can. Luckily it turns out julie couldnt bring her level to slow them away. I started using his notes for thank you notes. As i started to do that my friends would say, do you have any extras, id love some of those. Jeff started telling them. And a business was born. Because jeff can barely see what hes working on his process is unique. First, he slather a kind of plastic goop on convas, front and sides. After it hardens, and gets a coat of flat black jeff uses those ridges to feel his way around his as he works. How much can you see of this color . Not much. Is that part of why people help you just to help sort out and just makes it more fun. Its more fun to paint with a partner. Much more fun. Now he cant keep up with demand. He has at least sixmonth backlog of order and pretty prominent fans. Warren buffet has a painting elton john has two. A jeff hanson original goes for around 4,000. We havent been involved in this financially at all. After expenses, jeff makes around 50,000 a year. Hes in it for the money just not for himself. It seems every painting that jeff sells he donates another. For jeff the real goal isnt making a fortune its raising a fortune. And giving it away. All right, ladies and gentlemen, on this priceless piece how much . We need 6,000 more. At charity you can shuns, his paintings sell for 20,000 or more. A couple of years ago he made a vow to raise and donate a Million Dollars by age 20. He made it. And with time to spare. Ben tracy sat down for this sunday profile. It seems in your life there are three things that people always get wrong about you. Okay. They think youre jewish. Yes. They think youre gay. And they think you are matthew broderick. Im a jewish, gay, matthew broderick. In fact jon cryer is not any of those things. What he is is an actor coming off the biggest success of his career. [ laughter ] for 12 seasons he played alan harper on the hit cbs sitcom two and a half men. Im not happy with visible nipples. The show ended in february. And i woulder decided to write a memoir about all the things that happened to him during his 30 years in show business. Some more r rated than pg. I love the dedication in your foot. Thank you. I felt like i had lived a sheltered life and mostly had pretty good experiences in show business. But i had forgotten about some of the weirdness. And thankfully in the process of writing the book all that weirdness came back. Cryer who is about to turn 50 was bit by the acting bug early. He grew up in new york city and both his parents were actors. When youre a little kid and youre back stage seeing all these crazy, magical people floating in and out of your life it cant help but cast a spell. I wanted to be a part that have. He spent summers at theater camp where he honed his skills. He made it to the bright lights of broadway in 1983. In both torch song trilogy and Brighton Beach memoir he replaced another actor to whom he had an uncanny resemblance. Matthew broderick. And then came john hughes 1986 classic pretty in pink. Its marvelous. He played philip dale also known as duckie. And is forever remembered for this moment. How much of you was in that character . Duckie was the guy i wanted to be in high school. I was a theater geek at a science geek school. And i did not fit in. I wore leg warmers. Im not proud of it. And i wish that i had been as extrovert and sure of myself as duckie was. But that was not me. His chemistry on and off camera with costars molly ring balanced and Andrew Mccarthy was a bit frosty. Molly and andrew were very reserved people. Im a very out going person. That could have worked out great. Like that dynamic, but it didnt. I think they were irritated by me from day one. Ringwald had wanted someone else to play duckie Robert Downey junior and the original ending of the film, in which duckie gets the girl had to be reshot because test audiences didnt buy it and even booed. Cryer thinks he may know why. Ive been an effeminate heterosexual dork. Its confusing to men and women, i understand. After pretty in pink came series of film flops. Including one thought would be a blockbuster. He played lex luthers nephew in superman 4 it bombed. Your own grandmother didnt like it. Yes. That was the sword that really hurt. The dagger. After the film choices you segued into television. That for awhile did not go pretty particular. Nope. I managed to blow that one as well. Four cancelled Network Comedies led to article in newsweek that essentially labeled cryer a show killer. After the show killer thing i joke about it now but at the time it was a real issue for me in the industry. There was not a lot of people that want to hire me for awhile. I spent three years with very little work. So in 2003 when he heard about a new show being developed called two and a half men he wanted an audition. But word was that cbs Network President les moonves thought cryer was damaged goods. The most powerful guy in the business of television, really doesnt want you for this. He is he, im not sure, lets see him audition. And did he great. No computer, no gameboy charlie. I need you to be my eyes and ears. Okay, but you have to be liver and prostate. By every account two and a half men was an instant hit. Then eight years into their run Charlie Sheen had an all too public melt down and Everybody Wins and forever redefined the word winning. Condemn me, judge me, not any more. Winning when things started going off the rails were you angry . I work so hard to finally have this kind of success now juror jeopardizing. Pet i was not angry. I was scared every day that i was going to read about charlie being dead. But anybody who has gotten close to him knows that theres a really great guy. Hes a guy going through some very tough times with addiction and mental issues. You just have to just have to feel for somebody going through that. The show was shut down. Sheen was fired. And his puck rants continued. At one point he calls you a troll, a trait or and a turncoat. Did that hurt . Yeah, it hurt at the time. Again, i was mostly stunned. I was shocked but not surprised. Thats the right term. The two did not speak for years, but a few months ago they met up and cryer says sheen apologized. It was great the see him after all of the craziness. Because we did have something great together. Would you work with him again . I dont know. I loved working with him before. But i dont know how much i can invite that into my life. At this point. Well see ill never say never. Look at you. A benefit for monkeys. Two and a half men found a new man in actor Ashton Kutcher and continued for another four seasons. But the 71yearold vietnam vet says hes not here to entertain his students. It drives me crazy when people say school should be fun. I mean its nice if it could be but you cant make school fun. For years the kids thought that is all there was to him. Until a student named pat learned, they didnt know the half of him. Pat was in charge of a student blood drive and had just come here to Childrens Hospital los angeles far a meeting. He says it was weird. Whenever he told someone he went to st. Frances high school they all said, oh, you must know jim oconnor. Isnt he wonderful . Wonderful . What . It was disbelief really. Almost like finding this alter ego that he has. Inside the Blood Donor Center pat found a plaque listing all the top blood donors at the high School Including the record holder jim oconnor. Then he learned something even more unbelievable. That whenever mr. Oconnor isnt torturing kids with calculus hes on a whole other tangent. Cuddling sick babies. Three days a week for the past 22 years jim has volunteered here. Stepping in when parents can to hold, feed and comfort their children. Nurse erin says hes invaluable. They tend to calm for him. They tend to relax with him. They fall asleep with him. I just like them and relate to them somehow. Is that a smile . Jim has never been married. He has no kids of his own. But he has fallen hard for these babies. I dont want so see them alone. You cant do that. Youre not a tough guy at all. I know. But dont tell my students. If you do the sometimes you think you know someone but you dont have the slightest. Sometimes you think youre learning calculus. But the real lesson is life. Ive always respected him but now its a different degree, to the point where i try to emulate him. Had he lived to see that milestone, another one of his songs would fit the occasion just fine. Here is mo rocca. When i was 35 it was a very good year in 1965, Frank Sinatra was having one of his many very good years. Walter cronkite may have said it best. He has an appealing enthusiasm for the life he has lived. And when he sings he makes it sound as though it all happened to him. Few people knew him better than his costar from this 1966tv special, daughter nancy sinatra. With this your fathers favorite place in the world . Palm springs. Her home is a stones throw from the one her father owned on a street that now bears his name. I never knew anyone, i still dont know anyone else who felt things as deeply and took things to heart the way he did. From the beginning she says her father, an only child, was no stranger to pain. Events a big baby. They had to deliver him with forceps which are like salad tongs. And cut his ear drum. He had scars. Did you see them . Oh, yeah. Preferred always to be photographed from the right side and not the left. Not that a scar could hold him back. In career spanning epochs, sinatra was a superstar. On the radio. To the movies. And in concert. Seeing him live was special right . Different than just it was very special because the electricity in the room was so there. It was shocking. The minute he walked out on that stage there was an audible was he amazed at his own success or did he think i knew this would happen. He was determined. He told my mom he wanted to be like bing. Bing crosby. Wanted to be better than binge. Turned out that he ended up better than binge according to the fans. This is the sinatra hall. Another of his biggest fans. Nancys sister, tina sinatra who helped turn a hall at the university of Southern California into an exhibit featuring all things frank. He wore this when . In the 50s and into the 60s. Its really beautiful. When you see a hat like this you instantly think him. Your father. Himself. Right. What do you think were the ingredients of your fathers success . He had an appeal to both men and women. I think men could identify with him. And my mother always said and women wanted to feed him. Thats one way of putting it. That kind of attention was a constant in sinatras life. When bob pe soxers swooned for young blue eyes they were swooning for a married man. He wed the former nan tee barbato in 1939. But his private life was about to collide with his sweetfaced public persona. Hed leave nancy in 1950 for screen siren ava gardner. What was ava like . She was fantastic. I met her when i was what, 11 . I could see it. She was on the fast track he wanted to be on the fast track. He usually got what he went after. Still sinatra and his first wife whos now 97, remained tight. My mom had one great love of her life and that was my dad. She knew him before he was a superstar. To this day she still loves and adores him. I asked him once if he had it to do again would he leave mom fora video . He said, no. Sinatra was in a big slump when his marriage to gardner flamed out after with years. Leaving him devastated. I think he hit rock bottom pretty much at that period. And it was tough. But sinatra was about to pull off the greatest second act in show biz history with a major assist from i video gardner. She was a huge hip bought she was influence in getting the maggio role in from here to eternity. Gardner was pals with columbia pictures president harry cohn. You know who should play, that son of a pitch exhusband of mine. This famous death scene breathed new life into sinatras career. He earned an oscar. Also signed a oneyear deal with new label capitol records. In this very room capitol studio a the man and his music merged. This was sinatra at the height of his powers channeling as no one else could the agony of lost love. As his band leader and arranger Nelson Riddle put it, ava taught him how to sing a torch song. She taught him the hard way. I think the magic word was truth. Frank sinatra junior had a front row seat for a time he was his fathers musical director. When you were conducting with him, would you see him sort of really go deep into the song . Absolutely. Bing crosby sang, you believed him. When sinatra sang, you believed him. This is really the thing. Come fly with me. As the guy who knew how to swing and might very well take a swing at you sinatra defined the limits of cool on stage and off. Your father was really big tipper, wasnt he . Huge. Like, how much . One parking guy i think he gave him 200. And the guy said thank you mr. Sinatra, thats the biggest tip ive ever had in my life. The other biggest tip was 100 he said, what cheapskate gave you that . He said, you did mr. Sinatra. He was generous in other ways as well. Sinatra was by all accounts a great friend to politicians, he organized jfks preinaugural gala and he was close to rat pack members dean martin and sammy davis, junior. In 1960s america there were things not even the chairman of the board could control. What was sammy davis, junior, sneak would he come around the house . A brilliant entertainer. So sad. Sammy was part of the family. And he suffered terribly at the hands of some of dads other friends, especially the kennedys. People like that. They said, we dont want sammy around because he just married may britt. Swedish white woman. Yeah. Didnt appreciate that. It was kind of sad you know, for daddy too. Hes got one of the his best friends that he would take a bullet for, and on the other hand hes got the president of the united states, his family saying , you cant have him around. He cant come to the inaugural. So it was a terrible time. Throughout his life, sinatra was dogged by rumors of mob ties. They were never proven and they never seemed to matter much to his fans. I dont think in the history of television there is a sequence that matches the cool of your father singing the Antonio Carlos jobim. Its my favorite album. Favorite variety special and favorite album. When it comes to sinatra, it seems everyone has a favorite. He must have loved when younger people came up and said my parents grew up listening to you and im listening to you too. I love hearing that. Think about this, people write and say, my baby goes to sleep listening to him. Thats 100 years after his birth. That baby will grow up and god willing. In his day Frank Sinatras life outside the studio sometimes loomed as large as his music. But 17 years after his death, theres no competition. Its the music that lives on. His voice is a huge constant in my life. And i must tell you the truth if you lost your father literally lost him you dont necessarily want to be reminded of that fact all the time. Because i know hes not here any more. But, he is. [ applause ] i guess i never really gave much thought to the acidity in any foods. Never thought about the coffee i was drinking having acids. It never dawned on me that it could hurt your teeth. My dentist has told me your enamel is wearing away, and that sounded really scary to me and i was like well can you fix it can you paint it back on and he explained that it was not something that grows back, its kind of a onetime shot and you have to care for it. It chugs across northern india clocking plenty of miles of course, but more significantly this train transports tourists through time. Even before guests step on board theres plenty of pageantry to set the tone. Here we met the Campbell Family from baltimore. Starting their weeklong holiday on this train called majarajas express. Particularly enamored with the idea of majarajas. Why . Well, just seems like very exotic time. The majarajas you likely recall, controlled parts of india during the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. They were flamboyant rulers, to say the least. In their apparel, in their palaces, in everything. The intention was to show people that they were different and that they were rulers and that was why they were different. It was about show, but it was about maintaining power. Absolutely. Yes. Sir mark tully a journalist and train enthusiast explains majarajas were empowered by british colonists to help control parts of the india. It was a time when the british were building railroads across the subcontinent and trains were considered a sign of modernity and health. The rail ways were very important to the majarajas because they were prestigious things. And if you look at the trains that you can see they were built very obviously, blatantly luxurious so they would impress anyone who saw them. Ashlee campbell was certainly impressed with this modernday remake. Awesome. The majarajas express is result of Publicprivate Partnership designed to boost tourism. Up to 23 coaches can fit as many as 88 passengers. Its complete with a boutique bars and two restaurants. The train generally travels at night. This 7day trip took tourists from delhi to jaipur to agra, home of the taj mahal. Then on to other stops in north india, including varanasi and back to delhi. A week of eating and sleeping on a train means this place is a key part of the equation. John stone has been the onboard chef here for three years. The pepper that we are using is very similar to paprika. It only gives out the color. And not the heat. He whips up western and indian food from this moving kitchen. The size of, well, a train car. Seems utterly unfazed by the whole thing. Visits each and every table and prides himself on accommodating any requests. We sat down together in a dining room with a whimsical peacock theme. Explained the meaning of majarajas. Maha means big. Raja means king. You combine those it becomes a big king. That means a king who is superior to all the other kings. Stone is quite sure this train, and his cooking lives up to such a name. For him, working here was well, a process of elimination. Ive worked on the cruise lines. Ive worked for a seven star, a five star. Ive worked for palaces and resorts. Ive done outdoor caterings. Ive done air caterings. Only catering left for me was train catering. I found this opportunity and i grabbed it. Also Something Different for the campbells who traveled around the world as a family, but never quite like this says colin. From whatever we could have imagined from the environment to the service to every detail. They took in the sights. Even playing a bit of elephant polo in jaipur. Its hardly a bargain vacation though. This is the living quarters with its wood panels. It has a fully functioning bathroom and was part of a threecar train. There was another car that was for dining and another just for the majarajas wife. The idea really was that the majarajas should ride in something that was very special. Very different from what anyone else rode in. Your typical indian train experience looks a little more like this. With passengers crammed into old cars. Its not exactly luxurious. Misery and suffering. James campbell admitted to feeling a little guilty seeing indias poverty pass by the train window. But remarked the majarajas provided such color to history. There were some extravagant, over the top things that these majarajas did, not too many years ago. One thing that we read that really stuck with us, they certainly made this a much less boring life.
