A fitting sunday morning cover story for this independence weekend. The heart and soul is antique, including me. What else do you have here . This is a japanese samurai. Louis zamperinis home is too small to hold memories of a life so large. There are the trophies, honoring his athletic accomplishments. These are the five torches i carried. These five torches you carried in five different olympic ceremonies. Right. Then there are the souvenirs from the prison camp where he spent two years of his life. This is the folk i used, a bamboo folk. Surprised they didnt take it away from me. But Louis Zamperinis story was pretty much ancient history. An elderly man waving in a parade. Until a best selling book reminded the world of his harrowing tale. His first fame came when he was just a teenager. In 1936 he made the u. S. Olympic team. At 19 he was the youngest qualifier in the 5,000 meter. He didnt win but Louis Zamperini became a household name. A sports hero. A few years later the nation was at war. Zamperini was a bombadier. In may 1943 his b24 crashed in to the pacific. Our number one engine the rpm stopped. This plane was barely flying with four motors with two gone just dropped like a rock it hit the water nose down. I felt like someone hit me in the forehead with a sledge hammer. It was completely blown apart. What happens next was documented in this 1998 story from correspondent bob simon. Spotted a life raft floating away. He swam to it. 47 days in an inflatable raft. On the raft you play like a fox hole. He fought off sharks and battled the sea. Things went from bad to worse. Zamperini was near death when he was captured by the japanese. And taken to a place known as execution island. Where every known prisoner had been put to death. They took great joy in telling us we were going to be executed. And they always go through the motion. It got even worse. His fame back home led to hours of torture and beating at the hands of a sadistic guard nicknamed the bird. I couldnt look in his eyes. I couldnt to it. To me they were that sadistic. When he wasnt being beaten he was starved. Like most of the americans held by the japanese. But somehow, he survived. Almost returned home a hero. This is your life. There were tv appearances. His life appeared to return to normal. But the war years, while gone, were anything but forgotten. Haunted by nightmares, he turned to alcohol. Then, in a last ditch effort to save his percentage and perhaps his life, zamperini joined his wife cynthia at a Prayer Service led by a young billy graham. Grahams sermon touched on the power of forgiveness. It was the first night in two years and a half that i didnt have a nightmare and i havent had one since. So, it, forgiveness, it was a complete healing factor in my life. Which is why zamperini decided to commit himself to a lifetime of tore giveness. And that meant he had to go back to to see the Prison Guards who tried to detroy him. The most important thing was to know im not only forgive verbally but to see them face to face tell them that i forgave them. That was more than 60 years ago. And our story would end there, were it not for the book unbroken. This is the english version. Heres louis. He became a celebrity all over again. Readers clamored to see him. I said, no way. To hear him. To applaud his life. When you finished reading that book, what did you think . It put me back in prison and i had to stop and look out the window to make sure i wasnt back in prison. Did you every i am madge in it would be a best elser. She is a great writer. Her best seller seabiscuit. And in all that time you may be surprised to learn that the author and the subject of her story never met. Not even once. Hillenbrand never met zamperini because at the time she was suffering from a chronic illness that made it difficult for her to leave her home here in this neighborhood of washington, d. C. So we spoke with her the same way zamperini did. On the phone. Patients often go in to times where they are unable to get out of bed for weeks or months or years. It was something that helped me identify with louis as he his story is largely about suffering. Hill enland says she thinks not meeting zamperini actually made her book better. Because when he was telling me his stories, i wasnt looking at a 90yearold man i was thinking about a 17yearold runner or a 26yearold guy out on a life raft. I was able to visualize it. While hillenbrand came to know nearly everything about zamperini he knew almost nothing about her. When the papers printed her story i couldnt believe it. The only thing i could do and i felt it was proper, i sent her one of my purple hearts. I said you deserve this more than i do. Why do you feel she deserved it . Shes been suffering for 0 years i suffered for a couple of years. Turns out the 47yearold author and the aging veteran shared much more than the past. Lawyer is said when times that were tough she called you. We talked to each other on the phone. It was my inspiration, might say that shes my inspiration. When we talked zamperini said he hoped one day to meet hillenbrand that he had a message. I dont think ill tell each other very much except i love you. Not long after the hope became a reality. While in washington in 2012 he paid a visit to her home. He told me as we were hugging each other and saying goodbye he said that the book was the crescendo of his life. And he believes hes lived this long so that he could see it written and read. That was the loveliest thing hes ever said to me. As for Louis Zamperini he had something to share with all his new found admirers. You forgave your japanese enemies, do you think americans forgive enough . I think the hardest thing in life is self destructive. You are hurting yourself. Thats a healing. Actually its a real healing. Forgiveness. Look out. Osgood next. Look out. Osgood next. That was the day the notorious captain kidd was arrested in boston for piracy and murder. William kidd had started out on the right side of the law with a commission from wing kill yam ii to command a private manofwar an armed ship that was not officially part of the royal navy. In exchange for bringing pirates. Freedo thers and sea rover to justice. But after several months aboard the ship the adventure galley kidd and his crew turned pirate themselves attacking and looting virtually every ship they encountered. The sea going exploits quickly became the stuff of legend, the 1945 policeman captain kidd with Charles Laughton in the starring role. Apparently believing his wealthy pay thrones would protect him, kidd arrived in boston where he was arrested and shipped to london to stand trial. His claim that his nearmutinous crew forced him in to piracy availed him not. And on may 23, 1701, captain kidd was hanged. His body tarred and hung by chains on the bank of the thames as a warning to other sailors. Look out. The debate over extent of captain kidds guilty goes on to this day. Osgood Magnetic Attraction is a powerful force attracting not just metal objects but humans as well. It makes me happy. It always make me happy. She knows a thing or two about Magnetic Attraction. How many magnets are on your fridge right now . Now id say between 500 and 600. But used to have a thousand. Wow. She made the guiness book of records by owning the most magnets in the world. Today she has 45,000 all over her nevada home. From the fridge got a little piece here. Who gave you that . That was made for me. To the front door. When people are coming in they dont know that theyre about to see. Thats right. They shut it behind them and go theyre all memories of things that happened in my life or given to me for a reason or i bought for a reason. These i love. These are the old time movie stars. Is this like your art gallery . Its kind of like your photo album of your life. But before you dismiss Louise Greenfarb as eccentric. The archaeologist says if you want to get the know a family data look in their kitchen. The kitchen is truly a fascinating place. This is sort of command central of American Family life. And ip the kitchen is the refrigerator this iconic object. He spent four years studying everything but the kitchen sink in the homes of middle class families in los angeles. The refrigerator is a repository of family memories and schedule, place to schedule everything that is going on. The equivalent of facebook and Google Calendar all wrapped in to one. He and his colleagues found that refrigerators in homes with children are best with an average of 52 magnets. Some families had 150 to 160 objects thats what youre seeing in these photos here. I love this, just says here is our life on the refrigerator. Best communicated what is significant. If anthony is the professor of refrigerator magnets. At the Spiritual Center of our lives. Then you could say musician and inventor dave capal is the poet laureate. He invented magnetic poetry in the early 1990s with a sneeze. Ive come up with a variety of tricks to come at lyrics and one of them was stolen actually from david bowie. Where you take newspapers or magazines gist cut them up in to pieces and separate out the most interesting words and phrases. Its a great method unless like me you have springtime allergies and sneeze. One day i sneezed and my song blew all over the place. I launched accidentally head lock in to the magnetic poetry. Its the kits were an overnight success. It didnt take long before those little words appeared on the big screen. Would you like for me to something to nibble . Look at that. But he says the most meaningful success came when he received a letter. A woman said that her 17yearold severely autistic son had never interacted verbally with anybody in the family before a bunch of people in the kitchen playing with magnetic poetry. And suddenly he indicated that he wanted to join them so they brought him over there and he made his first sentence. Ever. Using magnetic poetry. Everybody burst in to tears it was a huge breakthrough moment in the family it happened at thanksgiving and makes me want to cry right now just talking about it. But the creative clutter of refrigerator door may become a thing of the past. This is your refrigerator . Last year more than 30 of all refrigerators sold were stainless steel and magnets dont stick on most of of those. What happens when you put the magnets . Aw. This is very blank canvas. Used to be just covered you couldnt see the fridge at all. Capal says stainless steel fridges have cut his sales in half. Everything has gone online at this point. Instead of leaving a note on the fridge door you now text them the note. They may be slowly disappearing from our kitchens, but some of us are still stuck on the kookie charm of refrigerator magnets. Or in other words, the making shine of steel. Lets linger over a brilliant symphony of this beautiful mess. Osgood next, Robin Thickes musical appeal, the wife who left him. Later oh, yeah. Osgood Wynton Marsalis finds the beef. ,,,,,, osgood its sunday morning on cbs here again is Charles Osgood. Osgood robin thicke bares as in paula patton the wife who has left him and who is not publicly trying to win back with every song. Thicke talks about all this with anthony mason. The top selling single of last year blurred lines. Was Robin Thickes long awaited breakthrough song. Hit songs on r b that was my first pop hit. Did it feel different . Oh, yeah. It made the 37yearold soul singer an international star. But the success that previously had alluded him seemed to overwhelm him. His life blew up and his marriage fell apart. Its been a very humbling year to say the least. Thickes response has been to rush out a new record. An album hes named for his estranged wife, paula patton. Its a 14song apology. In which he begs her to come back. Did you have any hesitation about doing it in public . I am right now. Some people are going to say youre exploiting the situation. Right. To sell records. Right. What do you say to that . My music is my life. I have no choice but to connect with it. But this week as he promoted the record on radio, tv and the internet, thicke faced a tsunami of social media
