with california. even in the higher elevations. this happens every decade or so. the amounts added up were highly variable depending on elevation. these are the totals as of 2:00 p.m. a little more did fall after that. you can see some snow flakes mixed in with the rain drops even below 1,000 feet but none of that really added up to any extent. it rained last night but this really helps out with the drought and there's more on the way. we had lightning strikes yesterday. they dropped some small hail over much of the bay area. all of the dots on the map show all the lightning strikes. right now we're in a little break in the action. shower activity in the central valley is going to be backing up toward us. it's going to wrap that moisture back into the bay area moving from east to west as we head through the rest of tonight. our rain chances are going to go up over the next few hours. the snow levels should remain above 1,500 feet and they should remain higher with the round of rainfall that we'll be tracking. that's a snow boarder shredding through the estates winery. >> reporter: you can see there's still a lot of snow on the ground up here. this is an area where people come from all around the world to taste wines. it is rarely an area where you see a lot of snow. we spoke with one local vineyard about what the impact all this snow is going to have on their grapes. >> it's home. >> reporter: mark neil has owned neil family vineyard on hale mountains for decades. and says he hasn't seen snow like this in a very long time. >> i think the biggest one still beats this, it was 77 or 78 something like that. >> how many inches did you have then? >> about 16, 18-inches. this has got about a foot. >> reporter: mark says he woke up friday morning to not only find a foot of snow but two of his goats lose on his property and dozens of his oak trees snapped in half. >> it's pretty much a battleground if you look at it. some are almost a decade old. >> the good news though is that mark says the grapes will be fine. he says the vines are dormant right now so the snow won't hurt them. mark says in the long run it can actually help. he had to cancel his wine tastings today. >> this will help keep the grapevine dormant and we might get a late april break. >> so does that mean that we'll have a very good 2023 wine. >> we can't say anything until the end. some place where you don't gate lot of snow it'll be great to come up and see it. >> you heard me ask mark about this year's batch of wine and that it may taste different because of the snow. he didn't want to jinx this but he did say if you're interested of trying the wine that comes from these vines here today. you may have to wait a little bit. it takes 5 years to go from the vine to the bottle so you have to come back here in 2028. i18 back open after downed wires brought traffic to a standstill for much of the day. there were about 4-inches of road piled up on the road when the chp shut it down at 4:00 in the morning. >> there were vehicles who even at slow speeds we're talking about 25 miles per hour are losing the control of their vehicles to the embankments. >> reporter: this vehicle was one of the vehicles that got stuck. it ended up blocks the lanes. and of course all of this will snow, rain and wind means more power problems. so here's a look at the latest pg & e outage map. at last check about 13,000 bay area customers were in the dark. most in the peninsula and also in the north bay. drivers trying to check out the snow on mount diablo left a little disappointed. rangers shut down the road so plows could clear them. about 5-inches of snow fell at the junction ranger station leaving snow sneakers with only one option, to hike to the top. >> when these special days pop up you have to take advantage of it. i grew up in the east bay my whole life. upwards of 50 years i have never seen this much ever. >> i figured i have to go look at the snow. it doesn't come here very often. i've lived here for a long time and i've never seen it like this. >> this is true. crews had to cut down downed trees. one man went snow boarding. he snow boarded back down. lots of hikers and bikers took in on the fun making snow angels or just enjoying the sight. people in the bay area usually have to drive for hours to play in the snow. but our eti meet up with families that didn't have to go far to take in on a good snowball fight. >> reporter: when ali gonzalez noticed snow outside of her window in milpitas she was so excited she wrangled her entire family, hopped into their car and headed into the white stuff all still in her pjs. >> it feels magical because it's so rare. >> usually they have to drive for hours, but today all it took was a 5 minute drive up calav eras road and they didn't waste time to get into a snowball fight. >> the secret is compacting it. >> reporter: the unusual weather conditions a result of back to back storms gave local residents a rare moment of fun in the snow. jason avila came here with his 5-year-old son preston who until now has only seen snow at lake tahoe. >> you ready, help me put it up on top here. >> reporter: today she's making a snow man a stones throw away from his home. >> we saw the low snow elevation and thought we would drive up a little bit and see what we can find. and here it is. it's like 15 minutes from the base. this is awesome. >> the snow made for tricky road conditions across the bay area on friday. but for ali's mom, it was the perfect excuse to turn off all their devices for some much needed family fun. >> to be able to get the girls off of their switch, it was so fun to bring them out here. >> reporter: for anyone worried about too much snow, local residents here in milpitas has a message, just chill out. >> thank you, eti. how a ukrainian musician went from playing on the stage to here. >> i feel the support. it's really inspiring me and i feel much better. san francisco's sales force tower among the many landmarks that lit up in the ukrainian flag colors. it's all to mark . >> despite the horrors of war going on in his home country ukraine, dennis says the beauty of music survives. and that's why this internationally known composer and jazz trumpeter plays for the people of sometime it is troops on the streets of kyiv. >> our music is very important right now because our music is part of culture and if there's no culture and country, there's no country. >> reporter: dennis is one of four artists involved with san jose jazz called counter point with ukraine. san jose jazz invited the artists to play after they learned that the jazz events were canceled because of war. >> we can turn this into a platform where these artists who have not been abo do their music here and we'll stream it to ukraine. >> my name is dennis adu. right now i'm on a volunteer. >> russian missiles have destroyed apartment buildings close to his own. dennis says the people have stopped being afraid. >> if missiles are going to strike, even if you're under ground or in basements it's going to hit you any way. a lot of people decided, don't hide anymore. >> as for his music, dennis says he was forced to put down his instrument for long periods of time. but the collaboration with san jose jazz he says has been an inspiration to him and the other musicians who have made the trip. >> i would like to say thank you because while i'm here, i really can feel the support. it's really inspiring me and i feel much better. >> and that's a positive note he can take home and share with others. >> just beautiful. some of the visiting artists also performed at san jose city hall today i. was all part of a flag raising ceremonies to show solidarity with the people of ukraine. separately there's also a noon rally at san francisco's ferry building tomorrow to mark one year since the invasion. all right if you want snow, you're better off staying in the bay area. the treacherous travel conditions up to the sierra. >> after a wild of 24 hours of weather it's calm across the bay area and san francisco this evening. showers still under way later tonight and there's more rain as we lead into the last days of february. details coming up on the first alert forecast. the storm has made for slow going all day. crews are clearing up a major crash between colfax and kingsvale. mean wheel meanwhile people are taking it all in. >> i think we have enough snow here if you want to have a good time. >> i think so. no word on when those westbound lanes will be back open. we will certainly keep checking. let's take you to southern california, interstate 5 will be shut down through the grapevine through at least tomorrow night. drivers heading from los angeles are being turned around. the weather service has actually issued rare blizzard warnings for l.a., ventura and san bernardino county. we're just getting blasted with all of this winter snow and rain and all combined. and now paul is going to fill us in on what we have going on tonight and for the weekend. >> you would think the winter weather would wash some of the pollen from the air. the snow level should go up a little bit more but today a few snow showers above 1,500 feet in elevation. the storm system is moving down to the south but it's going to grab moisture and send it toward the bay area. central valley right now it's going to back up toward this move from east to west as we go through tonight. left over showers saturday morning. a brief break in the action but more storms lining up. one that's going to move in sunday, one monday into tuesday. a wet weather pattern. certainly beneficial in terms of the drought perspective. i don't think the snowfall is going to stop at any point as we go into the weekend. it's going to slow saturday but pick up in intensity on sunday. the majority of that is going to hold off until later on tonight. futurecast does show that along with snow. those low elevations at 1500 feet. this is going to be hit and miss activity. that's going to wind down by about midday. this break in the action is going to carry us through the afternoon into saturday night. but then more showers are already going to be knocking on our doorstep as we head into sunday morning. heavy rain moving in by late morning and across the rest of the area by midday in the afternoon. locally heavy downpours as we saw last night and like we saw last night. a few flashes of lightning, hail from some of those storms as we move through. a bit of a break in the action. but more rain is moving in monday morning and thunderstorms are going to move. 3,500. we'll keep an eye on that level once it breaks down once again. it does not look to bring enough snow down in elevation like what we had yesterday. whatever we get in storm showers does not add up to a whole lot. you really hit the jackpot maybe .25-inch of rain. it's not going to be a quick mover. more rain monday into tuesday. you add up all these waves of rain and we're looking at another inch or two or rainfall. very beneficial in the drought perspective. an advisory around lake tahoe. and an advisory is in place on monday, tuesday. another five feet as you go up in elevation. right now break in the action. nice weather out there. temperatures are cold though. we're going to drop down mostly to the 30s tomorrow morning. san francisco only dropping another 4 to 5 degrees. but 40 degrees is cold no matter what month it is. a good 10 to 15 degrees below average tomorrow. we don't warm up much as long as this rainy weather pattern is with us. the temperatures staying in the mid-50s. it looks like we're going to start off march with at least three day trial three day dry stretch. if you have to do anything tomorrow morning is your opportunity. alzheimer's is a destructive disease but a group of students is turning alzheimer's and the healing brain into music. sarah is here to tell us about this wonderful story. >> it sound very abstract but there's science behind it. students are turning brain waves into musical scores. >> okay so this music is actually helping researchers understand alzheimer's even more. the brain waves from a healthy brain apparently produce music that sound different from alzheimer's patients. we're going to explain all of that. the differences, again it's very hard to imagine and to understand you have to watch the whole story to get a full grasp. even then i couldn't do it myself. >> even incorporating music any time. it changes your brain chemistry and how you're feeling. obviously this is a higher level on all of that but we welcome in. >> understanding alzheimer's is something that people have been trying to understand for a long time and this is part of that. a rain, shine or snow. oakland's black joy parade returns this weekend featuring colorful floats and vendors. there will be plenty of activity for
