threatens to shut down the government in less than two weeks. the trigger this time is the funding of planned parenthood. many conservative republicans want the funding cut off and are willing to close shop if it's not. >> reporter: the push against planned parenthood is gaining strength in the house. >> instead of dealing with the economy of our country, republicans are up to some more of their -- i don't know how to even describe it. insults, lack of respect for women. >> reporter: gop lawmakers are outraged over this summer's release of secretly recorded videos showing planned parenthood executives discussing the use of aborted fetus in medical research. house republicans want to end all government funding for planned parenthood. there was widespread criticism of the organization at wednesday's gop presidential debate. >> we shouldn't be sending 500 million dollars of taxpayer money to fund ongoing criminal enterprise. >> this is not the character of our nation and if we cannot stand up and force president obama to veto this bill, shame on us. >> reporter: house leaders will try to push through a temporary funding bill without planned parenthood. speaking in new hampshire, democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton says shutting down the government puts the economy and country in peril. >> shutting down the government is something nobody else in the world really understands. you would volume voluntary do that to yourself? go figure. they show no signs of backing down. in a statement last night, they call it a game of chicken with the economy and we cannot accept. last night, at a town hall meeting in new hampshire, republican presidential front-runner donald trump did nothing to correct a questioner who incorrectly stated president obama is muslim. >> the problem in this country, it's called muslims. we know our current president is one. you know he is not even an american. >> we need this question -- the first question -- >> but, any way, we have training camps rolling where they want to kill us. that's my question. when can we get rid -- >> we will be looking at a lot of different things and a lot of people are saying that and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there. we are going to be looking at that and plenty of other things. >> trump was at the center of the birther movement that claims the president wasn't born in the united states. back in 2008, republican nominee john mccain handled a similar situation differently. >> i do not believe -- i can't trust obama. i have heard about him. and he's not -- he's a -- he's an arab. he is not -- >> no. >> no? >> no, ma'am, no, ma'am. he's a decent family man, citizen that i just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues. >> trump's campaign says his answer about looking into the matter was in response to the idea of muslim training camps in america. coming up on "cbs this morning," more on campaign 2016 as senator and democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders stops by. today, attorneys for former army sergeant bowe bergdahl present their evidence during a pretrial hearing. bergdahl who was taken prisoner by the taliban after leaving his post, is charged with desertion. hena daniels reports. >> reporter: defense attorneys will begin building their case today to keep army sergeant bowe bergdahl from facing a military trial. the 29-year-old stands accused of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy for leaving his post in afghanistan in 2009, charges which carry a possible life sentence. on day one of the pretrial hearing yesterday in san antonio, bergdahl sat in court, and sometimes silent and sometimes taking notes. >> it's a very low evidentiary threshold and certainly for that reason, should not be thought of as a trial. >> reporter: prosecutors called three witnesses to the stand, including bergdahl's former platoon leader captain john billings. billings described how thousands of soldiers risked their lives for 45 days to try to find bergdahl in a region known as ied alley. under cross-examination, billings testified he had no idea about bergdahl's mental health his. defense attorneys have not revealed how that could play into their case. they plan to call their own witnesses to the stand today, including major general kenneth dahl who conducted the army's investigation into his disappearance. >> you may learn more about what sergeant bergdahl told general dahl. >> bergdahl, who spent nearly five years in taliban captivity after he deserted, has never explained why he left. it's unclear if his attorneys will put him on the stand today. in a highly controversial swap last may, the obama administration traded five taliban pretty muchers being held in guantanamo bay, cuba, in exchange for bergdahl. >> hena daniels in new york, thank you. the last of the hikers killed by floodwaters in utah has been found. searchers went into a narrow canyon in zion national park on thursday where they found the body. the bodies of the other six hikers were found tuesday and wednesday. the flash flooding also killed at least 12 other people, including nine children. the death toll in the california wildfires is rising. two more bodies were found in the ruins. a burnt home -- burnt homes in lake county. that brings the death toll to five in two of the worst fires in the state. cooler weather and rain yesterday helped firefighters gain some ground on the blazes that have destroyed more than 800 homes. it is time to get that flu shot. fewer than half of all americans get an annual flu vaccination. on average, the flu kills aboaut 24,000 people a year in the united states. >> there is plenty of flu vaccine out there. and the bottom line is that i hope that everyone does what i've done for myself and my family, get a flu shot to protect yourself, your family, and your community. >> last year's flu season was particularly rough. a harsh new strain of migrants. thousands of migrants have been arriving in croatia haepg opingo cross the border into western europe. it's reported some 11,000 in the last two days. this morning, croatia closed all its borders with serbia. pope francis begins a visit to cuba saturday. the pope spoke directly to the cuban people in a message televised on state tv. he told the cubans that jesus loves you very much. vatican officials say the pope's visit is not political but cbs news has learned his speeches will focus on reconciliation between the u.s. and cuba. el he'll hold a mass in havana on sunday. you can a school bus filled with kids went off the road and into a lake in florida. the bus was coming from an elementary school when it fell over into the water thursday. one of the students on the bus got out of the bus first and i started pulling kindergartens right out of the bus. >> rescue workers have accounted for all of the children on the bus and there were no injuries. police are investigating why the driver was unable to control the bus. a friend of the man charged in the charleston church shooting is expected to be arraigned today. joey meek, a friend of dylann roof, was arrested thursday at his north carolina home by the fbi. he faces charges of lying to authorities about how much he knew about the attack in june that killed nine people. about 20 students in virginia were suspended for wearing clothing displaying the confederate flag. the students got one-day suspensions for a rally outside of their school in christianberg on thursday. they refused to take off the clothing before entering the school. at least one of the students says that he will wear the confederate flag gear again today. bill cosby's accusers spoke out on tv last night. more than a dozen of the women who accused the comedian of sexual assault were interviewed in a special on a&e. one of the accusers, model and actress beverly johnson, told her story. >> it was like a family member had done something to me. i knew that the kind of person i was dealing with would destroy me. >> some of the women expressed anger that the statute of limitations prevents authorities from filing charges prosecutors are defending over a deadly defect and critics say it doesn't go far enough. gm will pay 900 million charges to settle charges over faulty ignition cases. it will also pay $575 million to federal civil lawsuits and 124 deaths are linked to the defects and no employees were charged. gm's ceo said yesterday, the company is committed to change from the inside. >> i have said many times, i wish i could turn back the clock. i know you do as well. if we could, we would, but we can't. what we can do is make sure we respond in the right way. >> under the deal, an independent monitor will oversee gm's handling of safety problems. the word from the fed, not yet. the federal reserve board is keeping interest rates where they are for now. a decision not to raise interest rates was based on a weakening global economy. following its two-day meeting, the fed did say the u.s. job market is solid. short-term interest rates have been kept at near zero since 2008. stocks on wall street finished mostly down following the fed's announcement. the dow lost 65 points. the s&p was down 5, the nasdaq rose 4. americanairlines still doesn't know what caused a computer glitch that stopped its flights from three airports. american flights to and from dallas, chicago, and miami, were stopped for about two hours yesterday by a computer issue that prevented passengers from checking in. there is no indication that american was hacked. american says 300 flights were delayed. the sports bar chain buffalo wild wings is ending its relationship with comedian steve rannazzisi. they will have no commercials featuring him. he was accused of making up that he was at the world trade center when 9/11 attacked. rainbow colored corn chips to support an organization for lesbian teens who have been
