breakthrough in the search for the wreckage of airasia flight 8501. crews have found the tail section of the airbus a320, the most significant part of the plane that crashed into the java sea last month killing all 162 people on board. brian webb is here in new york with the details. brian, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. finding the tail is incredibly important because this is where the black boxes are located, and they're the best hope of finding out why the plane went down. indonesia's search and rescue chief says it was first discovered by an echo sounder before divers went to the spot and snapped these photos. the word "airasia" clearly visible. the tail measuring about 10 x 5 x 3 meters. officials say it was pointing toward the seabed and near the same coordinates as when the plane lost contact. divers now looking in the same area for the fuselage hoping to recover more bodies. so far 40 have been found. it is still not clear what brought down the plane, but bad weather is believed to be a contributing factor. anne-marie? >> brian webb here in new york. thank you very much, brian. in yemen, a suicide bomber driving a mini bus packed with explosives killed at least 30 people. the massive blast could be heard across the city of sanaa. the bus attacked a group gathering to enroll in the police academy. many were hurt. there's no immediate claim of responsibility. and now to the bitterly cold weather that's sweeping over most of the country. this morning another round of freezing arctic air and snow is heading east. the high in minneapolis today is expected to be minus 1. public schools there and in chicago are closed today. two-thirds of the country will today, including the south. in west virginia yesterday, the freezing temperatures made for dangerous driving. one car flipped and ended up in a creek. the driver escaped though. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says all this cold will be followed by more cold. >> it is cold just about everywhere right now. that was cold blast number one, an appetizer if you will but the really cold air, the core of it coming down as we head through wednesday, across the midwest and down to the deep south and there's another one lined up behind it by the end of the week, friday into saturday more arctic air coming down. the short story is there's a longer drawn still to come. cold in parts of 31 states. many being as affected by the cold temperatures 50 below zero. here are the windchill number on wednesday evening. then we head into thursday morning, which is going to be the coldest for many. you've got a windchill of 2 below in atlanta, 8 in tallahassee, florida, subzero in charlotte charlotte, so everyone feeling the coldest air we've seen since last wind. the divide is by the rockies. if you want to escape this, they were in the 80s in socal yesterday and forecast as high of 80 in houston and texas. well into the 70s again and then all the way into the north cal, the 50s. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. no significant damage is reported following an earthquake outbreak near dallas texas. nine earthquakes hit the suburb of irving in less than 24 hours, the latest hit early this morning. the strongest had a magnitude of 3.6, enough to rattle the insides of homes. the area has seen a series of quakes in recent months. these were the largest. so far, though, no injuries are reported. and this morning it's unclear why a gunman opened fire at a veterans medical clinic in el paso, texas, yesterday. the doctor and alleged gunman were killed. the clinic is located near the william beaumont army medical center near ft. bliss. the fbi, which is leading the investigation, says it has hundreds of witnesses, many of them patients. last year a federal audit found the clinic had some of the nation's longest wait times. >> in colorado springs the fbi is searching for a man who may be connected to a bomb that went off outside a local naacp office. the homemade bomb exploded yesterday next door to the group's building. no one was injured and there's minor damage. it's unclear whether the civil rights group was the target. the new year in washington is starting out a little like the old one. the 114th congress is just one day old and already it's running into a head-on veto showdown with the white house. at issue is the much delayed xl keystone pipeline. mark albert is in washington. good morning, mark. >> good morning, anne-marie. the keystone pipeline bill is so important to the republicans it's known as senate bill 1, the first bill filed in the senate in congress. for the first time president obama said he would block it if it reaches his desk. just one day into the new congress, promises of bipartisanship -- >> we'll begin this endeavor on common ground, both in letter and in spirit. >> have been followed by a response from president obama. the republican controlled senate immediately got to work on a bill that would expedite the keystone xl pipeline. >> this is about energy economy, and growing our national security. >> while the bill has a show of democratic supporters including co-sponsor west virginia senator joe manchin, the white house said tuesday president obama will veto it. >> it's not altogether different than the legislation introduced in the last congress. if this bill passes this congress, the president wouldn't sign it either. >> reporter: the president is vowing to use the power of the pen in his final two years in office to defend his other major initiatives as well. republicanses also introduced a bill yesterday altering parts of the president's signature health care law. the president plans to build on his executive actions on climate change, immigration in cuba by highlighting new proposals on new homeowner ship college education, and jobs as part of a three-day multi-city tour beginning today. while the republicans appear to have enough votes to pass the keystone xl pipeline energy bill it's promised to few. president obama has only vetoed two bills in his six years, the fewest of any president since james garfield 133 years ago. anne-marie? >> mark albert in
