Captioning funded by cbs for thursday, september 12th, thursday, september this is the cbs morning news for thursday, september 12th, 2013. Good morning. Good to be with you. Im annemarie green. Well, this morning the president of russia has issued a very personal warning concerning the crisis in syria. Vladimir putin writing the New York Times warning that u. S. Military intervention would unleash a new wave of terrorism. He said theres no doubt poison gas was used in syria but there was every reason to believe it was not used by the syrian army but by Opposition Forces to provoke intervention by their powerful foreign patrons who would be siding with fundamentalists. Today highlevel talks start between russia and the United States to talk about the chemical weapons. The white house says its time for russia to step up. Russias assads and syrias closest ally. Russia has played a role in blocking the efforts thus far to hold assad accountable and what they are doing presents a real opportunity if it were to be successful. Susan mcginnis is in washington with more on this. Good morning, susan. Good morning, annemarie. Today secretary of state kerry and Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov get into the weeds of this agreement, details on this Herculean Task of stripping seary of its chemical weapon, this as russia itself is keeping up roadblocks to this deal and now its president is telling americans why they do not want the u. S. To strike. Russian president Vladimir Putin has a warning for the american people. In a New York Times editorial putin said the potential strike by the United States against syria will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond syrias borders. He added, we must stop the language of force and return to the path of civilized diplomatic and political settlement. A political settlement could be in the works. Secretary of state john kerry meets with his russian counterpart in switzerland today. Theyre discussing a russian plan for syria to turn over all of its chemical weapons to avoid a u. S. Military strike. If assads chemical weapons stockpiles can be secure and removed from his possession absent military force, that would be a very good thing. But thats a big if. The u. S. Will agree to the russian proposal only if it can be sure syria turns over all of its chemical weapons. Syria is considered by most experts a chemical weapons super power. Experts believe chemical weapons are spread throughout the country. I would say our knowledge of the exact location of these weapons is inexact at this point. There are chemical weapons that need to be rounded up and destroyed. President obama says hes willing to wait and see if this diplomatic Solution Works but says he will not hesitate to strike if that plan fails. Annemarie . Susan mcginnis in washington.
