colorado in raising campaign trash. most of the election will hinge on the economy, and both the president and mitt romney are staking their grounds. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. president obama, governor romney each have their message they are the one who can fix this economy, but so much of this simply comes down to cash and how much each can raise to get that message out. >> reporter: president obama campaigned late into the night in redwood, california, trying to convince voters he's best qualified to lead the country. >> i still believe in you. and i hope you still believe in me. >> reporter: governor romney told "time" magazine's mark halperin he will shrink the debt. >> someone who spent their life in economy is better suited to fix the economy. >> reporter: the president says romney's ideas is what caused the economic collapse in the first place. >> most good business people i know, if something doesn't work does something different. he must either think there's going to be a different result or he's hoping you don't remember what happened last time we tried it his way. >> reporter: the race for the white house will likely be determined by a few battleground states, including florida, where a new poll shows romney ahead by 6%. >> the reason you're seeing across the country people saying they would like to try something new is because they believe this president, while he might be a nice guy is not up to the task of guiding this economy. >> reporter: the president says this will be a close race. >> this election will be closer than the last one. people don't remember the last election was close. >> reporter: that has both sides rushing to raise money. the president's significant edge in fund-raising is said to be shrinking fast. yeah, 10-1 cash advantage the ambassador campaign this is now a distant memory between the presiden and democratic groups and romney and republican groups, each through april, terrell, has raised more than $400 million. >> starting us off in washington, susan mcginnis, thank you. overseas, historic presidential election resumes. there was a large turnout for the first day of voting yesterday. some waited hours to cast their ballot. 13 candidates are running. a runoff between the top to finishers will be held next month. the u.s. is taking a new tactic against al qaeda. a war of advertising. secretary of state hillary clinton says the united states bought space on yemeni web space and then replaced them by ads. the cyber war is being conducted by a state department group. american officials are urging pakistan to release the doctor who helped the u.s. track down osama bin laden. dr. shakil afridi was sentenced to 33 years in prison. he ran a vaccination program that allowed the cia to collect dna to confirm that osama bin laden was in abbottabad. a high ranking republican congressman says he's concerned national security may have been jeopardized when a hollywood film crew making a entertainment industry to inform projects ranging from books to documentaries to feature films. the pentagon denies their cooperation was motivated for re-election. the movie is set to be released after the election. [ female announcer ] check out yestoleaf.com and learn how to get a nissan leaf for as low as $25,200. ♪ the rush is on this weekend to summit mt. everest. it's estimated that about 200 climbers will try to take advantage of the last good weather of the season to scale the mountain. but as brian rooney reports, the crowds are making the journey even more treacherous. >> reporter: this is the line of hundreds of adventures and guides trying to get to the tallest mountain in the world. this video was shot last week. "outside" magazine writer tried to reach the summit monday but turned around in bad weather. he called us from base camp. >> i spoke with one guide who said his team waited for 3 1/2 hours to the last cliff face before you get to the summit. waiting at that altitude for 3 1/2 hours, not moving, your body is cooling down. >> reporter: dangerous weather this spring has limited the number of days for climbers to reach the summit. now with possibly only a week left in the season, there's a rush to the top, but there's only one line up and down. >> everybody has to go at the speed of the slowest climber. what that does, creates an enormous traffic jam. >> reporter: the bottle neck is in what's known as the death zone, the thin air where hikers become sluggish. even breathing from oxygen bottles. temperatures can be 35 below zero. >> every time a team summits they radio down to base camp and you'll hear celebration, people clanging on oxygen bottles, ringing bells, cheering. at the same time in another camp i heard people openly weeping for their lost climbers. >> reporter: among four climbers who died last weekend were 33-year-old shriya shah from canada and eberhard schaaf of germany. both insisted on reaching the top, despite being told by guides to turn around. they died of exhaustion and exposure. shah's body lies next to one of eight who died in similar circumstances in 1996. >> some people have a mindset of, i'm going to conquer -- >> reporter: john in made it to the top in 2009. >> they have this desire to get to the top so bad, they disregard their judgment and keep going. that's where you get the problem, you know, you have to -- you are to be prepared to not reach the top. >> reporter: it's so crowded that experienced climbers are leaving earlier in the night. their head lamps look like christmas lights. despite all the risks, as many as 200 climbers are preparing to make their attempt starting friday during what may be the last good weather for the year. they're risking everything for a few minutes at the top of the world. brian rooney, cbs news, los angeles. >> i'll pass on that. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," more on the dangers on mt. everest. we'll hear from anchor david brashear who was on mt. everest last weekend when four climbers died. also the latest on the race for the white house as the issue of fixing the economy takes center stage. and country music star ronny dunn stops by the studio to tell us about his new album, that and more a little later on "cbs this morning." that will do it for "cbs morning news." appreciate you watching. i'm terrell brown. take care. have a great day. ,,,, president obama waken up in the bay area and his wallet fatter than when he arrived last night. what of the highlights of this
