Revealing how a german airliner crashed in the french alps killing all 150 onboard. We learned today that three americans are among the dead including emily selke of nokesville, virginia. The rest from the plane were mostly germans and spaniards on a flight from barcelona to dusseldorf. In clear skies, with no hint of trouble, the Germanwings Airbus a320 descended into a mountain at nearly 450 miles an hour. We have a team of correspondents on the story. First well go to Mark Phillips in france. Reporter from the break of dawn and all day long, they flew, ferrying medics and investigators to the crash site. Their mission find the dead and try to find out why they had died. Its as difficult a crash scene as is possible to imagine, a remote mountainside, the wreckage and the victims strewn down a 60degree slope and over a 10acre site. Among the discoveries, though, the cockpit voice recorder damaged in the highimpact crash, but according to french air accident investigator remi jouty, still readable. The pilots voices are heard but a lot more analysis is needed. Reporter until the voice recorder is fully decoded and until its matched up with thes ot planes other black box, the flight data recorder, which has not yet been found investigators wont speculate onec the causes of this tragedy. There was further detail, as well, on the flights final moments. From its brief time at its cruising altitude of 38,000 feet, the plane began a quick, but not dramatically steep descent, that lasted a full 10 minutes. Its not known if the pilots were in control of the plane during that time, but the steady descent continued straight into the mountainside. Flight operations controller xavier roy told us the medics have been establishing where the victims are lying and what conditions the remains are in. Helicopters are the only way in right now. Yes. Reporter you cannot get there by road. No. Reporter so it will be days, you think to get the victims off the mountain. Yes. Reporter the pressure isep mounting though, scott for all the victims to be brought down from the crash site in temporary morgues in the valley,nd identified and returned to their families, a process that could take weeks. Pelley Mark Phillips reporting for us from the french alps near the crash site. Mark, thank you. Two of the three american victims have been identified and chip reid has more on them. Chip. Reporter well, scott, yvonne selke, a pentagon contractor and her daughter, emily, livedn here in northern virginia. E they were in europe for a motherdaughter vacation. They were flying from barcelona to dusseldorf to change planes for a flight to great britain. Today, some members of their family released this statement daughter emily graduated from a nearby high school with a perfect 4. 0 average, then wenter to drexel university, and today, some of her Sorority Sisters issued a statement saying in part, emily always put others before herself. Pelley chip reid, thanks very much. Also among the dead, 16 german teenagers and two teachers, all from the same school. Holly williams is in their home town. Reporter there were no classes at this high school in the small town of haltern this morning, just grief counseling for its students. Their makeshift memorial on the school steps simply asks the question, why . They were flying home from a class trip to spain to visit spanish students who had traveled to haltern last year. They were just excited to see them again, to go to spain, and just have a good time, and yeah, now they wont come back. Reporter Adina Hahlbom counted several of the teenagers who lost their lives as her friends. I still feel like they are going to come here again and just tell us what the trip was like, and tell us about their future plans. I just cant believe it. Reporter in this Rural Community of just 35,000, nearly everyone knew someone who was on board the plane. I think a lot of parents still have to, you know, let it sink in and have to see how how to cope with this terrible loss theyre going through. Reporter the schools vice principal susanne baldauf is grieving for her two colleagues and 16 young people shed watched grow up. She met with some of their parents this morning. Everybody, yeah, is is in disbelief and kind of a state of shock, the whole town really. Reporter across germany tomorrow, to remember those who died in the crash, theyll hold a minute silence at 10 53 a. M. The time contact was lost with the plane on tuesday. Pelley holly williams, thanks very much. In another important story tonight, an american p. O. W. At the center of a controversial prisoner swap was charged today with desertion. Sergeant bowe bergdahl, who is 28, could get life in prison. We have more now from davidm martin. Reporter the first charge, desertion, accused bergdahl ofti quitting his duty station at a patrol base in afghanistan with intent to shirk hazardous duty. The second, more serious charge, of misbehavior before the enemy, accuses bergdahl, who reportedly walked off the base after his guard shift, of endangering his unit. O bergdahl already has spent fivehi years in captivity at the hands of the Haqanni Network in pakistan, an ordeal that ended in may 2014 when he was released in exchange for five senior taliban operatives held at guatanamo. Critics have argued the u. S. Gave up too much for bergdahl, but it was a price president obama was willing to pay as part of ending the war in afghanistan. Ht he brought home the only missing soldier from that war. He wasnt forgotten by his country because the United States of america does not ever leave our men and women in uniform behind. Reporter at that same appearance, the president er introduced bergdahls father who riled some viewers byf speaking in the language of the enemy. [speaking foreign language] bergdahl, who has been assigned to a desk at fort sam, Houston Texas since his return to the u. S. , will now face the military equivalent of a grand jury to determine whether there is enough evidence to merit a courtmartial. He is represented by eugene fidell, a former military attorney and current lecturer at yale law school. The case has been politicized in the sense that some people in our democracy have seen this case as a way of hammering the president of the United States for any reason and every reason. R reporter Officials Say bergdahl, who cooperated with the armys investigation, will probably need Psychiatric Care for the rest of his life. W that would appear to set thel stage for a plea deal whichhe would spare the army the spectacle of a courtmartial in return for a lighter sentence. Te pelley david martin at the pentagon this evening, david thanks very much. Today, yemens president , who is backed by the United States, fled his country as yemen slides closer to a civil war between the two main branches of islam. Shiite rebels trained by iran have taken much of southern yemen, including an airbase that housed u. S. Special forces until they evacuated last weekend. Yemen is a major concern. It shows him taking part in a chant with members of the university of oklahomas Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. What you and others saw on that video is not who i really am. T what you and others saw on that video is not who i really am. Se its not who i was raised to be. Reporter was it that you just didnt understand how bad those words were or simply chose to ignore that . I knew they were wrong. But i i never knew how or why they were wrong. Reporter pettit has beened expelled, and the universitys s. A. E. Chapter was shut down. Before the apology, he spent the afternoon at an Oklahoma City church, speaking with clergy and Community Leaders, a meeting arranged by oklahoma stateto senator anastasia pittman. Reporter another student who was expelled for leading thent racist chant has issued a written apology but has not spoken publicly. Scott, a lawyer for the fraternity says he has reached aiv deal with the university and does not anticipate more students will be expelled. An pelley manuel, thanks. Reporter a. A. A. Analyzed 1,700 teenaged Car Accidents all of them captured on videotape and in clip after clip, watch how the eyes of the driver are so attached to their phones, they leave the road on the right or cross the center line to the left, often withoutth realizing whats happening. This young man using a phone looks both ways, but seems so mentally distracted, he doesnt see the car that hits him. Based on the videos, a. A. A. Concludes that distraction is a factor in 58 of moderate to severe teenage accidents. Thats four times the u. S. Government estimate of 14 . The report says the cell phone is so consuming, half of all the teenagers who caused rearend collisions were still driving at full speed. Peter kissinger is the president of the a. A. A. Reporter one teenager who was killed by distracted driving was 17yearold sydnee williams, who lost control while focused fix on her phone. Her father Brock Dietrich blames himself for not setting rules and not setting a betterbett example. I used to text while i drove so i really live with guilt that sydnee learned texting and driving from me and thats what cost her, her life. Reporter the a. A. A. Is now t urging the states to pass tougher cell phone and passenger restrictions on teenagers.
