This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Reporting tonight from washington. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. The tension in the st. Louis area is rising as a state grand jury gets closer to a decision on whether to indict Ferguson Police officer Darren Wilson in the Fatal Shooting of michael brown. Today the governor declared a state of emergency and authorized the National Guard to help keep the peace when that decision comes in. Dean reynolds is at the courthouse in clayton, missouri. Hands up dont shoot reporter in 25degree weather, protesters marched near the st. Louis county courthouse today, where grand juries will soon make their decision known. 21 days and still no justice. Reporter Deray Mckesson is a protest organizer. Were helping people learn how to peacefully protest and disrupt systems and daily life here in st. Louis as we get closer to the indictment decision, and we want to bring that disruption back to the people, back to the system that caused this pain for the community. Y reporter the protesters say when the grand jury decision is handed up, they will be better organized, but the police will be too, and now augmented by National Guard troops. Charles davis owns a ferguson restaurant on the street where past protests have turned violent. Do you think theres a chance that calls for calm will prevail . I pray that it does. I cant tell you the mind of other people. I can only speak of the mind of my own, but i pray that it does. Reporter new video may further inflame passions here. It shows an apparently uninjured officer Darren Wilson at the Police Station after he shot and killed michael brown. That runs counter to the police contention that wilsons eye socket had been fractured in the altercation with brown. Ben crump represents browns family. If youve got a blowout, a fracture to your eye socket, youre not just going to be Walking Around not holding your eye. Reporter new police radio tapes include officer wilson calling for assistance minutes before the shooting august 9th. After the shooting, another call from a different officer comes through. Get us several more units over here. Theres going to be a problem. Reporter police here say they have undergone thousands of hours of additional training and have reached out to build strong relationships with the community. Scott, we will soon see if that effort is successful. Pelley dean, thanks very much. Dean mentioned the 25degree temperature in missouri today. For the second time in two weeks, a mass of arctic air is sending temperatures plunging. Freeze warnings are up across exe south from texas to georgia. And that sea of blue and purple is where temperatures will be well below freezing tonight, including 15 in kalamazoo, michigan, and minus seven in aberdeen, south dakota. In the florida panhandle, the temperature will fall to 29. It will be 24 in dallas. And with the cold has come snow in some places. Heres vicente arenas. Reporter steady, heavy snow wtarted falling by midday in cal kalamazoo, michigan. Brian anderson huddled in the bus shelter where hes planning to spend the night. So what do you do now . Take it one day at a time and try to survive. Do you bring a few extra blankets with you . I got one im sitting on and thats about it. Reporter traffic crawled just outside the city where snow and blowing winds caused nearly whiteout conditions. In indianapolis, the morning rush turned a morning crush as up to a dozen cars slid off interstate 74. Traffic chopper pilot keith mccutchen. Slow the heck down, people. They need to get cops out here quick. There goes at one. Boom. Reporter as daylight broke, police finally shut down the eastbound lanes, but the traffic jam extended for miles. Even texas got some snow. Well, the panhandle needed shovel, in midlothian, there was barely enough for a snowball. Schools in arkansas canceled classes and kentucky saw up to five inches of snow. Here in kalamazoo, as much as a foot of snow is expected by tomorrow night, and there is snow in the forecast every day this week. And get this, scott, there is already ice forming on lake superior. Thats something that usually doesnt happen until december. Pelley not even winter yet. Vicente arenas reporting tonight. Thank you, vicente. Here in washington, the state departments unclassified email system is still shut down tonight after it became the latest victim of hackers targeting the u. S. Government. Heres Homeland Security correspondent bob orr. Reporter the f. B. I. Is now investigating at least four cyberattacks that have infiltrated key Government Systems over the past several weeks. Sources say chinese hackers targeted National Weather service computers, and the personal data of 800,000 u. S. Postal workers. Around the same time, cyber spies thoughts to be from russia hit unclassified email networks at the white house and the u. S. State department. Officials say there is no evidence any classified information was compromised. Shawn henry, who led the f. B. I. Cyberdivision and who now runs the security form crowd strike, says the breakins appear to be spy operations. This is most likely an intelligence collection operation. Theyre looking to gather intelligence about who the players are within government, who theyre communicating with, et cetera, and the new initiatives theyre developing. Reporter henry said the recent rash of breaches might indicate that u. S. Businesses and agencies are Getting Better at detecting intrusions. Why cant we stop this from happening . I think best way to get this is to manage it, to be able to detect it quickly, mitigate it, not unlike how we treat major diseases. We arent going to eradicate them, but we have to detect them and respond and mitigate consequences. So youre saying we cant stop all of these . I dont think we can, absolutely not. Reporter billions have been spent to protect computer system, but there is no fail safe Network Beyond the reach of highly motivated thieves. Pelley bob orr, thank you very much. The surgeon flown from west africa to a special Treatment Center in nebraska died of ebola this morning. Dr. Martin salia caught the virus in sierra leone. He was born there but he lived n maryland. Salia arrived in Critical Condition on saturday. Hes the second ebola patient to die in the united states, both caught the virus in africa. Today in indianapolis, the parents of an aide worker executed yesterday by isis asked americans to pray for other captives. Peter kassig converted to islam in captivity and changed his name to abdulrahman. He is the third american to be killed by isis, which has seized large portions of iraq and syria. We have more now from Margaret Brennan. Reporter after more than a year of waiting and praying, ed and paula kassigs worst fears were confirmed. Isis murdered their only child. Our hearts are battered, but they will mend. The world is broken, but it will be healed in the end. Reporter the killing was made public in a video released by isis on sunday, a masked execution stands over the severed head of man he identified as peter kassig. Its peter edward kassig, a u. S. Citizen of your country. Reporter the 26yearold indiana native, a former army ranger turned aide worker, was captured last year while delivering supplies in eastern syria. Unlike previous isis execution videos, kassig did not address the camera and his captor is not in the same desolate desert location. This time he says hes in dabiq, northern syria. The britishaccented executioner appears to be the same one who held american journalists james foley and steven sotloff. He again issued a threat to president obama. And tomorrow we will slaughter more soldiers. Reporter the 15minutelong video also includes a gruesome mass beheading of 18 syrian soldiers. In a show of defiance, none of their executioners were masked. In a letter to his parents earlier this year, peter kassig wrote that if he did die, it was for a good cause. Ed kassig said a new phase of their ordeal is now beginning. Please allow our small family the time and privacy to mourn, cry and, yes, forgive and begin to heal. Reporter as for isis, it is still believed to hold other hostages, including a female american aid worker. But, scott, unlike in other videos, this time their identities were not revealed. Pelley Margaret Brennan at the statehouse. Margaret, thank you. Ese u. S. Military said that Coalition Forces conducted more than 30 air strikes against isis since friday. That coalition includes saudi arabia. The saudis are desperate to keep the mayhem in iraq from invading their kingdom. Its rare for a reporter to get into saudi arabia, but Holly Williams has an extraordinary look now at how theyre defending themselves. Reporter we flew over the Arabian Desert to see the new 600milelong border fence thats protecting saudi arabia from isis. On the other side is the chaos of iraq, where isis is waging a brutal war. The saudis are using radar and infrared cameras to make sure it doesnt spill across the frontier. This is an impressive border fence, but it may not be enough to keep isis out of saudi arabia, because hundreds of young saudi men are fighting with isis in iraq and syria. Young saudis like this man, who appeared in an isis propaganda video preparing to become a suicide bomber. And then executing his plan. In a country with a long history of islamic terrorism, we were given rare access by the Saudi Arabian authorities. Their fear is that like al qaeda before it, isis will radicalize saudis who then target their own government. Saudi officials took us to this maximum security prison where they hold convicted terrorists. Some come back in from syria, some from iraq. Reporter and saudi arabias special forces showed us their ability to repel terrorist attacks. Including plane hijackings and villages infiltrated by violent extremists. Dozens of saudis have blown themselves up in isis suicide bombs. They will come up with new tools and new ways, but we try to counter that as much as possible. Reporter with the explosives rigged up at a safe distance, Lieutenant Colonel husam al shethry showed us the devastation they cause. But that would be here. Yes. Reporter and i would have been dead. Absolutely. It is more organized, and therefore its more dangerous. Reporter general Mansour Al Turki told us isis is a bigger threat than al qaeda ever was. They have their ambitions to have a larger area under their control. Reporter including saudi arabia . Including saudi arabia, of course. Reporter the Saudi Arabian authorities have cracked down on mosques and muslim clerics that were radicalizing young men, but that hasnt stopped hundreds of saudis from joining isis. Saudi officials told us that recruitment has moved online and, scott, they claim theyre sometimes powerless to stop it. Pelley Holly Williams reporting from the kingdom for us tonight. Holly, thanks very much. New findings tonight could change what doctors prescribe to prevent heart attacks. And the pope makes an announcement that will be of interest to millions of americans. Jon lapook. Reporter todays study may change the way doctors treat patients with heart attacks or severe chest pain. Dr. Chris cannon of brigham and Womens Hospital presented the findings at a meeting of the american heart association. We see benefits of taking cholesterol levels that are low to very low in the postheart attack patients. Reporter more than 18,000 patients who had either heart attack or chest pain were treated. Half received a high dose of statin, and half received vytorin, which combines a statin with another drug that decreases cholesterol absorption. Statin alone lowered the bad cholesterol or ldl to an average of 69. Vytorin dropped it to an average of 54. After seven years the vytorin group had 6. 4 fewer cardiovascular events such as death, heart attack and stroke. One year ago, new cardiology guidelines suggested doctors stop targeting specific ldl levels because there was no evidence one low level was better than another. This doctor from the Cleveland Clinic believes those recommendations need to be changed immediately. This study does blow off the guidelines. The guidelines didnt have target levels for ldl cholesterol. Many of us thought that was wrong. Now within a year of issuing the guidelines, we know that thats wrong. Reporter the study is sponsored by the company that makes vytorin. What needs more research, scott, is whether lowering cholesterol levels with other drugs would be eust as effective, in this case two drugs were better than one, but a single, morepowerful medication may do just as well.
