KPIX CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley October 30, 2014

Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. The pieces are scattered all over the coast of virginia. Valuable clues in determining why an unmanned rocket bound for the International Space station blew up last evening moments after liftoff. The rocket was 13 stories tall, owned and operated by Orbital Sciences, a private company, a 200 billion mission wiped out in seconds. It is the first failure in nasas commercial space program. We have more now from chip reid in Wallops Island virginia. One. Reporter for a brief moment, it looked like a perfect launch. Reporter but just seconds of the unmanned rocket suddenly became engulfed in flames as it fell back to earth and exploded in massive ball of fire. Its going to be loud reporter so powerful it blew out windows at ron wolffs restaurant. How far are we from the launchpad . As the crow flies, probably seven to eight miles. Reporter seven to eight miles . Right, right. Reporter that is incredible. I thought so. Reporter no one was injured, but the failure was a heavy blow to Orbital Sciences, which after the Space Shuttle Program Ended in 2011 was one of two private companies hired to resupply the International Space station. When it exploded last night right there, what went through your mind . My heart went in my throat. We all have a lot invested. And its very difficult to watch Something Like that. Reporter Frank Culbertson is orbitals executive vice president. We dont know for sure what the cause of this accident was. Well determine that the next few days or weeks. Reporter critics say possible culprits include the rockets engines which were made in russia more than 40 years ago and were recently refurbished in the u. S. The rocket was carrying 5,000 pounds of cargo, including equipment, food and science experiments, but the setback will not endanger the six astronauts, including two americans, now living on the space station, who have adequate supplies for the next five stnths, but it is reopening the onestion of whether nasas reliance on private industry to keep the space station supplied is the right way to go. Bill harwood is the cbs news space consultant. The goal was to lower the cost, make it a little bit less expensive to get the supplies up there. As part of that, you could argue the risk goes up a little bit. Reporter the next launch by Orbital Sciences is scheduled for april, but, scott, a Top Company Official said today depending on the cause of this catastrophic failure, that launch could be delayed for months. Pelley and we should mention there have been seven successful launches by commercial companies up to the space station. Chip, thank you very much. Lava from the kilauea vocabulary swallows homes on the big island. Its a 1500 bulldozer lumbering toward pahoa. Carter evans is there. Lava pouring from the kilauea volcano is scorching everything ins path of the tiny village of pahoa, home to less than 1,000 people, is next, and the community is preparing for the inevitable. Utility poles have been insulated and roger and Carolyn Simons have already moved out of their house. Our dream was to retire here, and this is just a disaster in slow motion. Its been so unbelievably surreal. Reporter the lava flow is roughly 250 yards away from them right now, but exactly when it will consume their home is still unclear. Reporter the worst part is just not knowing. Its not like the tornado is coming and then next day you can start thinking about rebuilding. You know, here theres no rebuilding because its seless land. Reporter we hiked through the rainforest to get these pictures of the glowing lava in the dark of night. You can hear the crackling as trees and brush burn. Ngs already nearly eight feet deep. When youre standing next to this lava flow, you can feel the intense heat radiating off of it. This lava is about 2,000 degrees inside, but it actually cools fairly quickly on the outside, enough that you can almost walk on it. It does take a long time to completely cool, in some cases months or even a year. The lava has been slowly inching at up to 15 yards an hour for up to four months, and no one knows how long it will continue, the only certainty is that the lava will flow downhill, making its way to the ocean. Dozens of homes and businesses are now in the lavas path, and it could eventually block all major access roads to this community. And, scott, they wont be able pelley carter evans on the big island. Carter, thanks very much. There has been another security breech at the white house, but this time the intruders didnt go over the fence, they hacked their way in. Heres chief White House Correspondent major garrett. Reporter there have been more than a few of these lately, fence jumpers at the white house, but as security threats go, they dont amount to much. The more pressing threat Cyber Attacks on white house computers. Dgose happen every day. Officials acknowledge that over the last few weeks, one penetrated the nonclassified white house computer system. The attacks origin is unknown, but a u. S. Official said russia or its proxies are the prime suspects. Admiral mike rogers, head of the National Security agency, says the public and private sectors need to do more to combat growing cyber crime. We can either deal with this now in a collaborative, professional way, or we can wait until we get hit with the 2x4 right across the forehead. Reporter the cyberattack continues and a white house memo to staffers said, the temporary outages and loss of connectivity that users have been experiencing is solely the result of measures we have take to defend our networks. The classified white house computer system, which was not compromised, does not connect to the internet. The unclassified system does and could reveal sensitive, revealing or embarrassing data. Former f. B. I. Deputy director tim murphy. We are not moving as fast as the adversary to step or stem this problem. Theyre taking advantage of that every single day. Reporter an unnamed u. S. Ally alerted the white house to a specific hacking signature. That helped reveal this intrusion. Scott, the hunt continues for f e source of the cyberattack, and president obama has requested detailed, nearly daily igiefings on that investigation. Pelley major, thank you. Relations between the Obama Administration and israels Prime Minister have never been what you would call warm, but now bill plante tells us a war of words has broken out, including language most foul. Reporter the battle began with an anonymous quote to the Atlantic Monthly from a u. S. Official using barnyard language to characterize israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a gutless coward. Their body language in meetings has suggested that the president and Prime Minister do not care much for one another, but the white house disavowed the insulting remarks. White house spokesman josh earnest. Earnest. We do believe they are counterproductive. There is a close relationship between the United States and israel, but that close relationship does not mean that we paper over our differences. Reporter one of the biggest differences is the israeli governments planfor additional settlements in jerusalem in the west bank. Settlement activity is illegitimate and only serves to complicate efforts to reach a twostate solution. Reporter netanyahu fired back in remarks to the israeli parliament. I am being attacked, he said, only because i am protecting the state of israel. House Speaker John Boehner accused the president of insulting ally after ally, saying he either condones the profanity and disrespect used by the most senior members of his administration or he does not. National security adviser susan rice has a longscheduled meeting tonight with her israeli counterpart, which could now be awkward. And, scott, the white house has made no promise to find or punish the author of this insult. Pelley senior White House Correspondent bill plante for us tonight. Bill, thank you. Today california became the latest state to require a 21day quarantine for travelers who have had contact with ebola patients in west africa. A cbs news poll out tonight finds that 80 of americans support the quarantine idea. One who does not is a nurse who is threatening the state of maine with legal action if it doesnt lift the quarantine against her. Heres michelle miller. Reporter outside kaci hickoxs home in maine today, a police car stood guard and later a state Health Official checked in on her. Maines governor, paul lepage is on record saying hes working within the department of health and Human Services to seek Legal Authority to enforce the quarantine. After spending this weekend in a new jersey hospital confined to a concealed tent, hickox says shell fight any such action and will end her voluntary quarantine by tomorrow. Steven hyman is one of her attorneys. For the sake of playing it safe, why not just adhere to the quarantine . All i hear is, you why dont you because maybe im afraid, not that maybe the facts or science say you will catch the disease. Reporter ryan boyko returned from his trip to liberia three weeks ago. He worked on medical computer system, having no direct contact with ebola patients. After developing a lowgrade fever, he went to the hospital, but tested negative for the virus two times. Still, hes under a mandatory quarantine in connecticut. Theres even a Police Officer parked outside his home, as well. We spoke to him via skype. It makes me feel criminalized. You know, not trusted. I had clearly been willing to let go of my personal freedom for some days when it made sense. Reporter presently, nine reporter presently, nine states have issued their own guidelines that call for some sort of mandatory quarantine or form of quarantine for people returning from west africa who had contact, direct contact with an ebola patient. Now, governors such as new jerseys Chris Christie has said ultimately they have the health and ty to protect the Public Health and the Public Safety of the people of their state. Pelley today in connecticut, a moroccan man was sentenced for two years in prison for threatening to attach bombs to Remote Control planes and fly them into federal buildings. The possibility of airborne terror has caught the attention of Law Enforcement all across the country, and transportation correspondent jeff pegues has been looking into this. Reporter last year in germany, this small drone gave Law Enforcement across the globe a look into the future. It hovered over a Campaign Rally for chancellor Angela Merkel and then landed just feet away from her. Security took it away as merkel laughed it off, but Law Enforcement did not see it as a laughing matter. What it is about that video that concerns you the most . If you really think about what could have happened there, that drone hit its target on its mark and could have took the chancellor and her people out. Reporter deputy chief Salvatore Dipace is one of the new York City Police departments top Counter Terrorism officials. He says as americas fascination with drones has grown, so has the nypds concern that they could deliver a terrorist attack. Chemical weapons . If the technology is there, which were thinking it is and will be. Reporter guns . Guns, definitely. Weve seen that. Weve seen some paint ball videos very accurately hitting sargets with the paintball. Reporter the nypds concern has been heightened by a dramatic increase in the number of drone incidents over new york city. Over the last year, there have been over 40 incidents with drones and three people have been arrested after the nypd says their drones nearly collided with police helicopters. Deputy inspector jimmy coan is the head of the departments aviation unit. These drones have a payload capability where you can attach a camera or a device, so our concern is that somebody could take an explosive or a substance and put it in that payload and deliver that into an area. Reporter this deadly potential is why several units within the nypd are developing technology to detect, disable or even control a drone. Ideally that would probably be our best tool to take over the flight of a drone, disable it, bring it back to a safe location, a safe area where we can check it out and see if it is a weapon or not. You know, with some time and money and effort, i think well get there. Reporter they would Like Technology that could scan the skies over major events. Just this week, the f. A. A. Reaffirmed an existing flight restriction that calls for fines and jail time for anyone who operates an aircraft near or over large sporting events.
