captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. this is our western edition. a few hours ago, eric cantor was one of the most powerful men in washington, but late today he announced he is stepping down as house majority leader after a stunning defeat in a republican primary in virginia last night. he was up set by a candidate backed by the tea party, david brat, and it wasn't even close. cantor, elected to the house in 2000 and majority leader since 2011 appeared to be on track to become speaker of the house. his defeat was the first of a majority leader since that post was created more than a century ago. no one saw it coming and it sent shock waves across the country. our political team looks at why it happened and what happens next. first nancy cordes on capitol hill, nancy? >> reporter: scott, because this is washington, lawmakers began jockeying for cantor's leadership post within a few hours of his surprise defeat. all day long they have been holding secret meetings and texting each other asking for support in a house election to be held next week. >> in the end the voters chose a different candidate. >> reporter: cantor's defeat left lawmakers reeling. he was widely seen as the heir apparent to house speaker john boehner. >> eric cantor is a good friend of mine and has been a very good leader for our party. >> we came up short. >> reporter: cantor spent $5 million to his opponents $122,000, a 40 to 1 rich ratio. economics professor dave brat was considered such a long shot even tea party groups largely ignored him. >> this is a miracle from god. ( applause ) >> reporter: brat made immigration a marquee issue arguing cantor's support for granting citizenship to some undocumented children put him out of step with conservatives. >> cantor seems to sway either way. it's all what is in the best interest at the time. >> reporter: virginia voters like boyce best and joe deshazo said cantor's position and high rank worked against him. >> eric cantor spent so much time playing the national scene that he forgot about the people here in hanover. >> reporter: cantor's role as majority leader was to set the legislative agenda for house republicans and raise money for g.o.p. colleagues. democrats said you were too extreme. conservatives said you were too compromising. what advice do you have for your successor? >> i think that this town should be about trying to strike common ground. i've always said it's better if we can agree to disagree. but find in areas which we can produce results. >> reporter: cantor said he will be supporting house majority whip kevin mccarthy of california to replace him and scott, even though cantor will be relinquishing his leadership post at the end of next month, he does plan to serve out the remainder of his term. >> pelley: so what does this mean for the tea party, the republican party and for the country? for that we will go to the all- stars. joining nancy is bob schieffer, our chief washington correspondent, and john dickerson, our political director. bob, cantor had been trying to moderate the image of the republican party as a party that cared about people's needs. what does this defeat mean? >> reporter: well, i think what it does, scott, is just really underline how wide and how deep the divide is now in the republican party. this is like 1964 when you had eastern, more moderate republicans headed by nelson rockefeller and out west the very conservative republicans headed by barry goldwater. they never closed the divide in 1964 as a result barry goldwater got beat and beat badly in that presidential election. >> pelley: john dickerson, i wonder, how do you see this? did brat beat cantor or did cantor beat himself? >> reporter: well, one republican strategist said the cantor campaign was guilty of political malpractice. majority leader traveled a lot raising money for his party but but that meant he wasn't home defending his turf. that's perhaps because his pollster said he was well ahead in this race. cantor's numerous attack ads introduced voters to his relatively unknown opponent david brat without harming him. and then cantor took positions, particularly on immigrants, a hot-button issue that were at odds with his record. and brat seized on that and said cantor was soft on illegal immigrants. and said this proves republican leaders in washington had lost touch with their voters. >> pelley: nancy, here is one of the things strange about this, cantor was an early supporter of tea party candidates. he went around the country and raised money for them. what changed? >> reporter: well, he was a very vocal, very high profile advocate for the tea party agenda initially. but over the course of the past year he began to back away. particularly after the tea party lost some of its luster in the wake of the government shutdown last fall. that really angered some conservatives who came to see him as a fair weather friend. >> pelley: and finally, bob, the midterm election, of course, is in november. does this defeat of eric cantor change the national political landscape? >> reporter: well, i think it probably does. republicans are going to have to decide what they want to do here. people who look at this from a national perspective, the national candidates and consultants and so on. if the republican party is going to be successful in electing a presidential candidate in 2016, they're going to have to find a way to appeal to hispanic voters. yet the congressional candidates for republicans, they don't have many, most of them, many hispanics in their districts. so they're not as interested in that. between now and these coming elections, republicans are going to have to decide who and what they want their party to be and right now that's up in the air. no one can really answer that question. >> pelley: and not much hope for immigration reform any time soon. john dickerson, nancy cordes, and bob schieffer thanks very much. in another major story unfolding tonight, more than 4,000 americans died fighting in iraq and what they won is being lost now with remarkable speed. more towns fell today to islamic extremists who launched a massive surprise attack this week. this is, in large part, a battle between the two main branches of islam. an extremist group that wants to impose a strict islamic state has taken territory now, highlighted here in orange, spanning from syria all the way through iraq. iraq's second largest city, mosul, fell yesterday. and here's elizabeth palmer. ( gunshots ) >> reporter: this evening iraqi forces were digging in to battle islamic militants on the outskirts of the oil city of kirkuk. ( gunshots ) but just 90 miles away, mosul had already fallen into militant hands with barely a fight. youtube video shot yesterday shows one of their convoys rolling into the city past burning police and army vehicles. the only sign of the security forces-- the uniforms they abandoned before they deserted. one masked fighter gloated on camera about the route and then warned this is just the beginning. the group has big ambitions in an area they're fighting to control, to establish a vast fundamentalist islamic state. and in the last 24 hours they've attacked key towns where for the most part iraqi security forces simply melted away. iraq's prime minister nuri al- maliki has declared a state of emergency and blamed his army collapse on a conspiracy, but so far he hasn't explained how he will address this crisis. meanwhile desperate iraqis in their cars waited to cross the border into safer kurdish territory. the u.n. estimates as many as half a million people are now on the move. >> pelley: and we find liz palmer tonight in beirut, lebanon, and liz this has been a lightning assault. the iraqi government taken by surprise it would seem. is there any way to knows what's coming next? >> reporter: well now baghdad is under threat and the government has to do something. it seems likely it will be some sort of military counter offensive, maybe using the special forces better armed and better trained. a source near the kurdish regional government says they expect to see something like that in the next 72 hours. >> pelley: and the white house watching all of this with enormous concern. liz palmer, thanks very much. and tonight we are getting a and tonight we are getting a fuller picture of sergeant bowe bergdahl from what appear to be his own writings. today "the washington post" published quotes from journals it received from an oregon woman who says she is a close friend of bergdahl. bergdahl is still hospitalized after five years as a p.o.w. in the afghan war. he was captured after he walked off his post. margaret brennan joins us now with more on all of this, margaret? >> reporter: scott, we spoke to the woman who says she is a friend of bergdahl and received these messages just days after his disappearance. she's sharing them now, she says, in order to protect him. according to "the washington post," in a handwritten journal entry the same month he headed to army basic training, bergdahl wrote: once he arrived in afghanistan in 2009 bergdahl reportedly wrote: a year later, in an e-mail to a friend, bergdahl said: then just three days before unit members said bergdahl walked off post, he sent an e-mail to friend saying: the army has declined comment, but we did learn today that bergdahl enlisted just two years after the coast guard discharged him just 26 days after boot camp. the army was aware but they issued him a waiver. this was during the same time as the surge in afghanistan and they were trying to get more soldiers to serve. >> pelley: margaret brennan at the pentagon for us tonight, margaret, thanks very much. margaret, thanks very much. today police identified the teenager who shot and killed a fellow student yesterday at their high school in troutdale, oregon. they say that jared padgett, a 15-year-old freshman hid an assault rifle, a handgun and ammunition in a guitar case and a duffel bag when he rode the bus to school. the police say he killed 14- year-old emilio hoffman and slightly wounded a teacher before he took his own life. the motive for the attack is not known. police in las vegas released surveillance video today showing the final moments of a couple's shoot-out with police. on sunday, jared and amanda miller killed two police officers and a civilian and were surrounded in a wal-mart. amanda miller is seen raising her gun toward her husband but the police say she did not shoot him as was previously thought. she took her own life, turns out jared miller was killed by an officer's bullet. we have something remarkable tonight. this is going to be your first look at a television interview with pope francis. popes don't do interviews, but the unpredictable francis sat down with israeli journalist enrique zimmerman who helped arrange sunday's prayer meeting between the israeli and palestinian presidents. francis is the most accessible pope in modern times, shunning the closed popemobile which was rolled out after the attempted assassination of john paul ii. francis speaking in his native spanish said, i am not going to greet the people and tell them that i love them from inside a sardine can even if it's made of glass. it's a wall, he said, and i can't live that way. besides that, the pope said, at my age, he's 77, i don't have much to lose. francis said he has no personal agenda as pope. he said he never expected to be elected. i came to the conclave, he said, with a very small suitcase to return to argentina as soon as possible. francis is a huge fan of world cup soccer and his home team from argentina which is a fierce rival of brazil, the host of the matches. the pope said, "the brazilians asked me to be neutral. and i'm keeping my word." we'll have more of enrique zimmerman's rare interview with pope francis on friday. teacher tenure was struck down in california. will other states follow the lead?
