Transcripts For KPIX CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley 20140507

This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. President obama told cbs news today the u. S. Is sending military and Law Enforcement advisers to nigeria to help in the search for more than 200 teenage girls who were kidnapped from their school last month. Islamic extremists claim they took the girls and plan to sell them into slavery. Megan glaros, on assignment for cbs this morning, spoke to mr. Obama at the white house. Were sending in a team made up of our military and Law Enforcement and other experts, and were very glad that nigerias accepted the help. Obviously, whats happening is awful and, as a father of two girls, i cant imagine what the parents are going through. But this organization, boko haram, has been one of the worst regional or local terrorist organizations in the world. Weve long sought to work with nigeria on dealing with them, and were going to do everything we can to assist them in recovering these young women. Pelley even as the president was speaking, we learned today that eight more girls, aged 12 15, were kidnapped from another nigerian village. Families are outraged that nigerias military cannot find the girls. The terror group is called boko haram, which means western education is forbidden. Debora patta is in south africa. Shes been following all of this for us. Debora, why is boko haram targeting schools . Reporter boko haram is widely regarded as nigerias taliban. Its against all secular institutions but particularly educational ones, and todays kidnapping of eight school girls, all between the ages of 12 and 15, was from another village in the north of nigeria. But its not just girls. Recently, there was a massacre of 59 schoolboys in the state of yobe. And clearly, this organization is growing increasingly violent. It targets students because they have the audacity to seek a western education. Pelley but how strong is this group . How do they get away with this . Reporter boko haram has a stranglehold in the northern nigerian state of borno. To replace the secular Nigerian Government with an islamic state, and islam is the fastestgrowing religion in the country. About five years ago, it tried to gain control of the north, and there were violent clashes in the streets between muslims and christians, but that violence is no longer just contained in the north. Its now spread to the capital of abuja, and last month there were two bomb attacks in as many weeks. In november last year, the United States declared boko haram a terrorist organization, and its put a 7 million bounty on the head of the leader of boko haram, abubakar shekau. Pelley debora patta reporting for us from south africa tonight. Debora, thank you. In another important story this evening, a new study says that Climate Change is being felt today in all 50 states. The National Climate assessment mandated by Congress Said the average temperature in the u. S. Has risen by nearly two degrees since 1895, most of that increase since 1970. Sea levels are projected to rise by 1 to 4 feet by the end of the century. Our team of correspondents is looking into this. First, Major Garrett at the white house with what the report predicts. Reporter heavy weather now and more to come harsher hurricanes, hotter summers, longer droughts and higher sea levels. Those are the ominous warnings of the new Climate Change report written by more than 250 scientists and experts, with input from the oil industry. Dr. Jerry melillo is one of its lead authors. Climate change is happening now. It is not an issue that you can think about 20 or 30 years into the future. Reporter no region of the country will be spared. The northeast could see more heat waves and coastal flooding, with some areas experiencing two additional months of 90degree weather a year. The southeast could have significantly more 95degree weather days and rising sea levels that could threaten many coastal cities. In the midwest, warming will extend the growing season, but higher temperatures and humidity could lead to more heatrelated deaths. Warmer water could threaten aquatic life in the great lakes. In lake huron, summer temperatures rose five degrees between 1968 and 2002. The southwest has suffered its hottest decade on record with no sign of easing. Thats triggered drought, insect infestations, and has added to the threat of wildfires. And then theres alaska. It has warmed twice as rapidly as the rest of the country over the past 60 years. Thats meant earlier spring snow melts and widespread glacier retreat. The report makes it clear that all americans, in some way, either directly or indirectly, are currently being affected by Climate Change, and, as we look to the future, will continue to be affected by Climate Change. Reporter republicans dismissed this report as an Election Year ploy to scare voters and pave the way for pollution regulations that sidestep congress. Scott, this is the third report of its kind. Congress first ordered periodic climate assessments in 1990. Pelley major, thanks very much. Now, some parts of the great plains are in extreme drought, drier than the dust bowl of the 1930s, when drought and poor farming practices caused millions of acres of soil to blow away. Anna werner is in north texas. Reporter Wichita Falls, texas, is suffering its worst drought since Record Keeping began. Rainfall here is close to four feet below normal since 2010. So, city manager Darron Leiker turned to the only viable, quick option he had treating the citys sewage water and turning it directly into drinking water. Youve been reassuring people that this water will be perfectly safe, but are you facing the yuck factor . Somewhat, yes, but not as much as you would expect. They may not love the fact, but they understand that theyll have water to shower in. Reporter five million gallons a day will be pumped to the city taps, and other communities might consider it, too. Several communities around the country, actually around the world, theyre watching us closely. A lot of eyes are on Wichita Falls right now. Reporter im standing on the dry bed of one of the three lakes that provides the citys drinking water, and that there behind me that looks like a pond, thats whats left of the water. Now, the city plans to begin reusing wasted water later this summer, but even with that, scott, in a worstcase drought scenario, the city could run out of water in two years. Pelley anna werner, high and dry in what used to be a reservoir. Anna, thank you very much. It is the exact opposite in south florida, where rising seas are threatening miami beach. Vicente arenas is there. Reporter not far from tourist hot spots, miami beach has started construction on underground pumping stations to protect the city from flooding caused by rising sea levels and extreme storms. Its hard to beat mother nature. Yes, it is. Reporter scott robin is helping manage the 400 million drainage project. After these pumps are installed, we wont see one drop of sea water on our streets. Thats our goal. Reporter todays report says sea levels could rise along 5,700 square miles of the southeast coast. The most vulnerable cities include new orleans, tampa, st. Petersburg and virginia beach. Scientific models predict most of miami beach could be underwater by the end of the century. And this city says that it wont stop fighting from going underwater. Miami beach is hoping to have 60 new pumping stations built within the next five years and, scott, theyre hoping to have stronger codes here that would require buildings and homes to be built higher off the ground. Pelley vicente, thank you. Theres going to be much more on the Climate Change story, including megan glaros speaking with the president about what the u. S. Can do to slow Climate Change. All of that tomorrow on cbs this morning. Today, a settlement was reached that would provide 100 million to the victims of a nationwide meningitis outbreak that was linked to a pharmacy in massachusetts. A federal bankruptcy judge still has to approve it. Jim axelrod is following the case. Reporter the settlement would compensate people like scott shaw in denton, north carolina, whose 77yearold mother elwina died from fungal meningitis contracted from tainted steroids produced by the new england compounding center. Fungal meningitis is, by the accounts that i have seen, is a vermin of the highest order. It is it is a wicked thing. Reporter the 2012 outbreak was the worst pharmaceutical disaster in decades. 751 cases of fungal meningitis and infections that caused 64 deaths were linked to n. E. C. C. Federal and state investigators found unsanitary conditions at the labs that compounded the contaminated injections. N. E. C. C. Filed for bankruptcy in december, 2012. David molten is a lawyer representing victims. The bulk of the settlement comes from the owners personal assets. Yes, i would say that a majority of the settlement comes from the owners personal assets. Reporter roughly 70 million of the 100 million settlement would come from the owners of the Company Barry cadden, Greg Conigliaro and their families. Roughly 30 million will come from insurance. Clearly, no one who lost a loved one or who suffered the horrible effects of infection from the meningitis that was a result of this tragedy can be compensated for all of their pain and suffering. But what we view this as is a real material step towards providing these victims with immediate relief and immediate payment. Reporter if the bankruptcy judge approves the settlement, victims and their survivors could see the money as soon as early next year. Tonight, n. E. C. C. s shareholders released a statement saying, no amount of money can adequately compensate the bereaved families for their loss of loved ones nor those who are suffering today from the terrible effects of this tragedy. Which echoes what we just heard from the victims lawyers, scott. Pelley and a criminal investigation still under way. Jim, thanks very much. Theres a move to change the rules on Student Loans. G. M.
