This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. It has been nearly one week now since Malaysia Airlines flight 370 left for beijing, and seemingly vanished into thin air. But it has to be somewhere, and tonight the search for the boeing 777 is moving farther into the indian ocean because there is evidence the plane may have changed course toward the west after losing contact with air Traffic Controllers and that it continued to fly in that direction for quite some time. Bob orr in our Washington Bureau begins our coverage. Bob. Reporter scott, u. S. Officials tell us they do not believe Malaysia Airlines flight 370 crashed immediately after it disappeared from civilian air Traffic Control radar screens. Instead now, there are strong indications, the jet with 239 people on board continued to fly for several hours. Sources say the jet, which is designed to transmit routine maintenance and Engine Performance information, continued to ping satellites with available data. Sources say those periodic pings lasted for at least four hours. Investigators say no data was actually transmitted to satellites, so there are snow details about precisely what plane might have been doing. But just the fact that the jet continued to emit signals is a strong indicator the plane had not crashed. Investigators cant say if the jet was flying the entire time, a plane on the ground with its engines running could produce the same signal. Investigators strongly suspect the jet was heading west away from its intended flight path, back across the malaysian peninsula. Military radar picked up a trail of unidentified blips, moving away from the general location where the jet vanished from civilian radar. U. S. Experts have studied the images, which seem to show an airplane heading towards the strait of malacca. They believe the radar is credible and say the images are consistent with the missing boeing 777. Now, recovery teams are expanding their search and the circle may get even bigger. The plane had enough fuel for a sixhour flight, meaning it could have flown more than 2,500 miles from its last known location. Now, officials still suspect the missing jet crashed somewhere in the water, but no wreckage has yet been spotted and investigators, therefore, cannot pelley bob, thank you very much. The longest a modern airliner has been lost without a trace is nine days after a crash in 2007 off the coast of indonesia. Clarissa ward is covering todays search in malaysia. Reporter u. S. Navy ships joined those from india heading to the Malacca Strait as the search expanded to include the indian ocean, but confusion and false leads continue to plague the malaysians investigation. Earlier today, authorities denied a report in the wall street journal that the plane could have flown for hours after the last radar contact. I would like to refer to news reports suggesting that the aircraft may have continued flying for some time after last contact. As the airlines will confirm shortly, those reports are inaccurate. Reporter malaysian officials returned to searching in the east this morning after the Chinese Government released satellite pictures yesterday that appeared to show a 50foot piece of debris floating in the south china sea, but after a full day of searching, they came back emptyhanded. A malaysian surveillance plane was dispatched this morning to investigate potential debris shown on chinese satellite images. We deployed ours, but found nothing. Reporter scott, malaysian officials have also defended themselves against criticism of their handling of this investigation, saying that this situation is unprecedented, that the plane simply vanished, and as a mark of respect to the passengers who disappeared with it, Malaysian Airlines has announced that it will no longer be using the flight number 370. Pelley still a lot of confusion around all of this. Clarissa, thank you very much. People all over the world are trying to solve this mystery. A satellite Imaging Company tells us three million have people have gone on to their web site to join the search. Carter evans shows us how. Basically were looking for anything that stands out. Reporter l. A. Filmmaker craig santy has spent more than 12 hours scouring satellite images on the web site tomnod. Com. In your search, what have you found . So far i have found about 12 fishing vessels, and i found about 11 things that i cannot explain what they are but they dont look natural. Reporter the images come from five satellites owned by coloradobased digital globe. Theyre covering the same areas being searched by boats and planes. Shay har is the web sites founder. We have people from all time zones, all languages, all contributing to try to solve this mystery. Reporter so far, the virtual search party has flagged 1. 7 million images for a closer look. Were taking all these tags, all of these clues, from millions of people, and putting them together using our statistical algorithm. Its a Computer Program thats able to identify whos reliable, whos not reliable, and whats reporter last year, the web site was used after typhoon haiyan in the philippines. Volunteers scanned satellite images to help direct relief teams. The hunt for Malaysian Air 370 has gained momentum on facebook and twitter. I havent seen a friend post a selfie in, like, 24 hours. Everybody is posting their stats on this. Reporter that interest is driving many to try and help. Do you feel like youre really making a difference in the search effort . I do, but i feel like im making a difference not only because myself, but because me exponentially with everybody else working together. Reporter and so many people are logging on. The web site has already crashed several times. But, scott, those volunteers are soon going to have a brand new set of images to analyze. Digital globe tells us its now redirecting its satellites to get a better view of the indian ocean. Pelley and the very latest on this mystery tomorrow morning and the latest thon mystery tomorrow morning on cbs this morning. Carter. Thank you very much. Late today, federal investigators said they are going on the assumption that a natural gas leak caused yesterdays deadly explosion and Building Collapse in new york city. But they cannot examine the pipes until the area is declared safe, Michelle Miller is. The there. Reporter search crews found and eighth body in the still smouldering rubble, because member of the church now buried on the ground floor. I smelled gas tuesday night when we left prayer, but not in the building, so i went into the 116th alley and i told them, i said check it out because it may be from you. Reporter a gas leak was reported 15 minutes before the explosion. Utility workers arrived too late. Its not clear where a leak may have come from. But the pipes leading to the buildings were more than 100 years old. New york city has 1,300 miles of gas mains made of cast iron and unprotected steel that can break down over time. They rust. The joints start to leak. They buckle as the ground under them erodes from water and other things. Reporter Robert Jackson of duke university, studies the nations gas distribution system. Over two months, his team detected nearly 3,500 leaks in boston and more than 6,000 in washington, d. C. In a dozen of those cases, we found that the air in the manholes under the streets were explosive. Reporter natural gas accidents are responsible for 17 deaths and 133 million in Property Damage every year. The Utility Company told us, it inspected the gas main on the same block as the destroyed buildings as recently as two weeks ago. In high concentrations, natural gas can be ignited by a small spark, even a cell phone call. Scott, the cost of replacing all that old pipeline here in new york city could be as high as 8 million a mile. Pelley Michelle Miller, thank you very much. G. M. Acknowledged late last night that it knew about a defective ignition switch back in 2001, but continued to build cars with the part for years. Now, 12 deaths are linked to the defect. G. M. Is recalling more than 1. 5 million vehicles and jeff glor has todays developments. Let me start by asking you about the g. M. Recall. Reporter on capitol hill today, the recall was the first order of business in the senate. Thank you, madam chairman. Reporter secretary of transportation anthony fosks asked why the national highway Traffic Safety administration, or nhtsa, investigated problems with some of the g. M. Cars in question three times but never demanded a fix. In this case, the three crash investigations that were done were inconclusive. Now, as we learn more information, we may learn that our process for reviewing situations such as this need to be improved. Reporter in an updated letter filed with regulators, g. M. Now says they knew about an issue with ignition switches in 2001 in saturn ions. Yet, a comparable ignition cylinder was put on chevy cobalts and other cars starting in 2004. A Service Bulletin was issued to dealers in 2005, saying a heavy key ring or jarring can turn the engine off, which disables the airbags. Nhtsa had access to that but no recalls were ordered. Clarence ditlow runs the consumer watch dog group, the center for auto safety. Theres been a complete failure of the recall system, both on the part of General Motors and the federal government, and we absolutely have to fix that. Center sent a letter to nhtsa and enclosed this chart that shows the number of deaths when air bags did not deploy in saturn ions and chevy cobalts between 2003 and 2012, as many as 12 in 2010, ditlow says based on this chart the only way nhtsa could not see a defect trend is if it closed its eyes. The air bag is the last line of defense in a crash and it should never fail. Gm so far has acknowledged 12 fatalities linked to the defect including we now learned this chevy cobalt accident which killed a 13yearold girl and her grandmother in pennsylvania in 2009, the oneyearold boy was paralyzed from the waste down. We just got a response from nhtsa with that letter filed today. They say. Scott. Pelley and we want folks to know that all of the cars being recalled can be seen on cbsnews. Com for a complete list. Thank you very much, jeff. In what may be a threat to peace in europe, Russian Troops are massing tonight on the border of ukraine. 8,500 troops so far. The crimea region of ukraine votes this sunday on breaking away from ukraine and joining russia. Russia invaded crimea two weeks ago after protesters threw out ukraines prorussian president. The military buildup is worrisome because russian president putin has said he reserves the right to send troops into Eastern Ukraine if there is violence there. Well, Charlie Dagata is reporting, that seems to be exactly whats happening in the city of donetsk tonight. Reporter with just two days to go before this referendum, these almost daily demonstration here have turned ugly. Tonight, just after dark, you had the prorussian demonstration on one side, the proukrainian on the other. And theres a line of riot police in the middle. People were throwing rocks at each other, using pepper spray. Now, we went to the local clinic. We bumped into a woman that wed actually seen in previous demonstrations, and she told us about this guy who had been pulled from the crowd. Somebody smashed a bottle over his head, and they were beating him up, and kicking him. She was lucky enough to get him to the emergency room and get him some help. As i said, these demonstrations have been going on for days. This is the first time theyve turned deadly, but it just underlines the growing tension between both sides of this divide. Reporter when Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected pope, he was not just an argentinean outsider with a mandate to reform an unsettled church. He soon became a different kind of papal bull, charging through the china shop of vatican convention, not just discarding the golden crucifix and red papal slippers for a simpler look. Not just abandoning the palatial papal apartment for plain rooms in the vatican hotel. This pope would not only carry his own bag. Hed carry the church, according to father john wauck, of romes Pontifical University in a new direction. Hes accessible and energetic. Where his predecessor was reclusive and tired. But in becoming the face of change, pope francis has also raised the expectation of change. No more so than when, speaking on a papal flight, he seemed to reject the vatican line that homosexuality was an intrinsic disorder. Instead he asked, who am i to judge . Its a dramatic shift in approach, according to vatican writer marco politi, whos called his new book francis among the wolves. This means a new look on divorce, on second marriage, a new look on homosexuality, on homosexual unions and contraceptives. Reporter but a new look that hasnt yet been reflected in any change other than atmospheric in church doctrine. Are people kind of dressing this pope in the clothes they want him to wear .
