At least 33 large wildfires are now burning in a half a dozen states across the west. In northern california, the fastmoving butte fire has now grown to more than 100 square miles in two days, threatening thousands of homes. Carter evans has the latest. Reporter record heat and strong winds have made what was a small fire in butte county explosive as it bears down on several mountain towns, a local newspaper headline calls the fire unprecedented. The ground is so dry, each flying ember adds to the rapid advance of the flames. Among thousands forced to flee is homeowner mike gillam. All of a sudden we turned around the corner and there was a big plume of smoke. I said that looks like its in my direction and sure enough, its my backconsidered. Reporter the dangerous fire conditions have sparked new evacuation 200 miles to the south. Its been raging for six weeks now and is threatening californias historic jbt sequoias. With the increase in fire activity and the high heat, these warnings could change and they could change quickly. Axelrod police in phoenix said today the man they questioned about that stripping of shootings along i10 is not the prime suspect and that the investigation is still wide open. At least 11 vehicles have been shot at over the past two weeks, some with bullets, others with bbs or pellets. Police say it is possible there is more than one gunman. That county clerk in kentucky who has refused to issue marriage licenses to samesex couples has now filed another appeal. Kim davis is hoping to delay a judges order to allow deputies to continue issuing licenses when their office opens monday morning. If the court fails to rule by then, davis will have to comply or risk returning to jail. Governor jerry brown has yet to say whether he will sign a bill passed by the California State Senate yesterday that would give terminally ill patients the option to end their lives with a doctors help.
