his views on immigration had dominated the race for the republican nomination. trump has said mexico is sending people to the u.s. mexico doesn't want. drug dealers, rapists and violent criminals. while other republican candidates have distanced themselves from trump and a number of his business partners have severed ties, trump's poll numbers continued to climb. as julianna goldman reports on a campaign where immigration is a hot button issue, trump made sure there was no mistaking his views. >> reporter: if anyone thought donald trump would back off from arizona and nevada, think again. >> what i don't encourage is people coming into our country illegally and i don't encourage where a government forces some people in that the government doesn't want, and these people wreak havoc. >> reporter: they set off a fire storm of criticism repeatedly saying the mexican government is sending drug dealers and rapists in the u.s. major business partners have severed types. protesters from washington to los angeles have called for boycotts and republican leaders and presidential candidates have told him to tone it down. concerns that trump's rhetoric is hurting the appeal to hispanic voters. >> when i get the nomination i will win the hispanic vote. >> reporter: his words are resonating with the republican party and one poll even shows him in the lead. and he's also tying his message to the high profile killing of a woman at a popular san francisco peer by someone deported several times. trump has parents telling stories about their children being killed by undocumented immigrants. >> my son was murdered by someone illegally in the country. >> reporter: not everyone showing up to hear him is a fan. >> reporter: trump's rally in phoenix had to be moved to accommodate a larger crowd. he was interrupted repeatedly by protesters. >> axelrod: julianna, thank you. let's bring in john dickerson, the moderator of "face the nation," john, trump is controlling the debate for the moment but how likely is this moment likely to last. >> well we've seen candidates have hot summers before where they rise during this period where voters are shopping around, not making strong commitments. it's still seven months away until the first votes are cast in the republican contest. so, the real test for donald trump is if he can start to feel like a viable candidate as people look at the candidates, as they might be actually president. that will start in the debates in august or after labor day as voters really start to assess what it would be like to actually live with this candidate as a president. >> axelrod: you mentioned seven months until the votes start to be taken. what do we know about the long term strategy by other republican candidates based on the way they react to donald trump now. >> most of the republican candidates have tried to distance themselves from donald trump and particularly mexican immigrants. all the republican party is concerned with trying to find a way to increase the hispanic vote. so those candidates by distancing themselves are doing the least they have to do to maintain a viability with that portion of the electorate. but that's not enough. they can say what they don't agree with, but the real task for republican candidates is to show hispanic voters what they voters what they do agree with and they have to do that before the voting start. >> axelrod: between what's necessary and sufficient. john dickerson thank you so much. and tomorrow on "face the nation," john's guests include house eric john boehner and presidential candidate bernie sanders. we're learning how the suspect in charleston massacre got his gun. they made a startling statement they allowed him to get the weapon he allegedly used to kill when i learned that he was assisted by the system to buy, purchase a gun. >> reporter: we now know the lexington's office never responded for the f.b.i.'s information. the wrong police department was listed as an arresting roof. while they told the fbi examiner during roof's background check to check with columbia's police, the bureau's own contact list omits columbia even though part of the thousand is in lexington county. james comey says "we're accountable for not having reflected the geography of south carolina. had that happened, we wouldn't be having this conversation." david shapiro is a former fbi agent and prosecutor. >> we do have a serious problem in getting information both as complete and as timely. >> reporter: when they went to the choice, that same examiner was working 15-30 other cases. transactions were submitted to the f.b.i. that day. roof's was among nearly 2200 marked pending. when the three day waiting period expires it's left to the gun store's discretion whether to sell the weapon. roof got his gun. last year there were 8.2 million gun transactions. less than 3% were delayed longer than three days. 8-- were never resolved. >> axelrod: kris, thank you. the confederate flag led to a historic moment in the state house yesterday when the flag was lowered for good. today because of that the n.a.a.c.p. lifted its economic boycott on south carolina. six months after playing for the national college football championship and the first game of the upcoming season eight weeks from today, the florida state seminoles have some issues. two members of the team are now charged with assaulting women. the latest a star running back. >> reporter: he had a promising freshman year. last night he turned himself in to face a charge for including a woman outside of tallahassee bar in june. state attorney willie meggs say the victim was drug but credible. >> in fact, prosecute for battery. >> reporter: according to the police affidavit cook says he didn't hit anyone. the seminoles dismissed another player this week after meggs released a video he says shows quarterback de'andre johnson punching a woman at a different bar. though she also hit johnson. the state attorney calls itself defense. he says the player pushed her first. the program has a reputation for bad apples. at least nine players got arrested in three years. quarterback them accountable for their actions. coach fisher met with players today and banned them from bars, jim. >> axelrod: contessa, thanks very much. the first ever sex abuse trial to be held at the vatican has been stopped before it really got started. jozef wesolowski, a former vatican diplomat is accused of sexually abusing children. court convened today but the proceeding halted when wesolowski was hospitalized with an undisclosed illness. his trial has been widely seen as part of pope francis' crack down on abusive clergy. the pope himself is half a world away continuing his tour of latin america in paraguay. hundreds of thousands of people turned out as the pope celebrated mass. many traveled from his home country of argentina. the prime minister of serbia had to run for his life
