We did a couple of stops along the city today just to check it out as we are days way from the big game. Yesterday mayor lee declared that it would be red and gold weekend couraging fans and local businesses to show off their 49ers pride by sporting the team logo or colors. The citys devotion to the super bowl bound 49ers, local graffiti artist steve and tim have aptly named their 30foot masterpiece the city bleeds gold. The mural was developed on a rooftop using rock climbing gear to get up that high. If this is any indication of whats going to happen on sunday, the 9ers may have something to worry about. This is the San Francisco zoos black rhino named boon. He was supposed to eat the Baltimore Ravens for breakfast this morning. Zookeepers created the ravens logo out of boones breakfast vegetables and then let him in to eat it but instead he ate the go 9ers instead and boone is named after the 49ers right tackle alex the rhino boone. We think he may have been confused thinking he was supposed to eat the winner. We are told by his keepers he has a bit of intuition. He is pretty attuned to his football. He really enjoys football. And i think his message today was that the 9ers are going to do it. Zoo workers told me they have a bet with the maryland zoo should the 49ers win the maryland zoo will rename its ravens exhibit to the 49ers and if the ravens win, San Francisco zoo will rename its boone exhibit for a month. The zoo is doing Something Special on super bowl sunday. Parents, if you bring your kids 14 and younger to the zoo and they are wearing 49ers gear they get in for free. They came on their own to save the city of new orleans from an elevated highway based on their experience in San Francisco with the embarcadero. Never seen anything like it. And we juxtaposed a drawing that we did of the vieux carre riverfront expressway elevated in front of Jackson Square and we sent this out as a Christmas Card all over america. Reporter new Research Shows many of the diet and exercise programs a 55yearold has tried throughout her adult life really dont work. Youre always advised not to lose a lot of weight too fast that its going to be bad for you. In fact that doesnt appear to be true. Reporter in fact, in the long run, fast initial weight loss is a better way to go. Thats one of several obesity myths revealed in a new study. In it, researchers looked at all the studies and shed the fat lies for facts. For example, if you make a small lifestyle change, like walking 20 minutes daily or eating two extra potato chips a day, it will add up to large longterm weight changes. You will eventually plateau and even the initial weight gain wont be a great as predicted. Reporter another myth that sex burns up to 300 calories. Fat chance. A typical encounter lasts 6 minutes and burns only 21 calories. A man would have to have sex for an hour to burn 200 calories. He could burn more by watching the super bowl. Other myths that breastfeeding protects the infant against obesity. It doesnt. The p. E. Classes keep kids slim in they that p. E. Classes keep kids slim. They dont. And that you should set realistic goals so you dont get frustrated. Thats not true. The most ambitious plans to lose weight work best. And the study also says what does work restricting calories to lose weight and exercise to keep it off. A study out of finland finds being single is not good for the part. Single people are about 60 more likely to suffer a heart attack. They are also at a higher risk of dying from heart problems. Researchers dont know why but say healthier people have better habits and take medicine more regularly. Im a healthy guy and we have valentines day coming up not too far away from here. High pressure the dominant feature here over the next couple of days. That ridge is going to sit here and that means all these storms going to ride right over the top of it so yeah, we are going to stay nice and dry and these temperatures going to be running above average in fact today maybe as much as 9 degrees above average in parts of the bay area. So with that in mind, not a bad day around the state either. 65 degrees expected in fresno about 66 and sunny into monterey bay 68 in redding and 49 degrees in lake tahoe. Lots of sunshine in the high country. Plenty of sunshine inside the bay. You will see 66 in san jose. 67 degrees in morgan hill. And about 61 degrees in pacifica. East bay temperatures up into the 60s, as well. Lots of sunshine continuing throughout afternoon just a gentle sea breeze and the temperature not too bad. 68 degrees in oakland, 67 santa rosa, 62 stinson beach. Looks like overnight lows still going to be chilly in spots especially in the valleys down to the 30s and the 40s. But by day we are looking good over the next few. Tomorrow the same. Reporter along San Francisco bay you can hear birds chirp, kites suffer and enjoy the waves because of 96 yearold sylvia mclaughlin. I think its just beautiful. Reporter she spent more than 50 years leading the charge to protect the bay. Its very gratifying to me to see so many people enjoying our beautiful bay. Reporter to guard the bay against sprawl and pollution, sylvia cofounded save the bay in 1961 with two friends. Today she is the last survivor the pioneering trio. David lewis save the bays executive director. The fact that we still have a bay today is due in large part to sylvias leadership in a time when there werent environmental leaders and there certainly werent women leading that kind of an effort. Reporter sylvia and her friends first victory was to stop berkeleys plan to double the size of the city by filling 2,000 acres of the bay. We didnt want to see anything as beautiful as our bay being filled in. Reporter another victory in the 1960s when governor reagan signed into law the First Coastal zone Management Agency to protect the bay. And that is the model for all the coastal zone Protection Agencies in this country and around the world. Reporter because of sylvia and save the bay, Public Access to the shoreline increased from six miles in 1960 to hundreds of miles today. In fact, an eightmile park stretching through berkeley and four other cities was recently named Mclaughlin Park in her honor. Citizens for eastshore park call sylvia a force of nature. She has that very genteel diplomatic friendly friendly exterior, but there are nerves of steel inside. Reporter and sylvia has won many battles with powerful developers who planned to fill the bay.
