At the end of the day, its about the attempt, not my personal situation, and bring this home to San Francisco. Reporter i never found zito pouting or at least he never showed it. Cynics would give you 126 million reasons why he didnt deserve to complain about his lesser role. But athletes especially those who have been in big post season games they want the moment. They yearn for the baseball not the bench. Money is great but being relevant is better. So when zito took the mound on friday night in st. Louis with the season in his hands, he was relevant again. And with the nation watching, he turned back the clock. I was there during the play offs in minnesota six years ago when zito outpitched Johan Santana then baseballs most dominant pitcher. And as the brilliant night ended in st. Louis, i wondered what he would like to tweet to all those who condemned him for years of failing to live up to the contract. And the mansigned him to that deal, peter magowan, stood like a proud father in a victorious clubhouse. When you sign for an organizations point of view a contract like that you have to believe in the character of the person. Can you count on him . Reporter now the giants will count on zito to pitch in game one of the world series. When you came up in oakland i felt like i was a boy and then to mature in this game is a big deal. That process is in huge part becoming a free agent going to a new team, signing a big deal and dealing with everything that comes with that. So i feel like an adult in the game now. Reporter the tigers worked out before the giants this afternoon. They have been off since thursday since they swept the yankees in the alcs. Justin verlander will oppose barry zito. I think i was probably in college watching the game of his and his curve ball was just unbelievable. He still has a good curve ball. But that back when he was with oakland was unreal and i hope not to see it. [ laughter ] he told me he was pitching game one so i said okay. [ laughter ] so i kind of just follow suit. Reporter giants will be facing by far the most dominant pitcher 30 with an earned run average under one. Verlander with 25 strikeouts in 24 innings. The tigers havent sorted out their closer situation since jose val verde blew a lead last week so now they are going with phil cope in the 9th inning. He went to senator high school in Central California and made the trip to San Francisco a few times to watch the giants when he was a kid. I watched barry bonds hit two bombs. Right field corner. When they announced his name i tore through the parking lot and handed my ticket off and saw him launch the ball into the water. What a memory. Off the Field Baseball news. Red sox introduce john farrell as their new manager. He had the same job with toronto last year and was bostons pitching coach prior to that. The bombshell of the day, the marlins fired Ozzie Guillen after one year. Miami lost 93 games despite a huge payroll. Guillens comments praising fidel castro in a Magazine Article likely did not help his cause. So the baseball season continues here in San Francisco. Game one of the world series tomorrow night. Allen, no tickets available. Im very sorry to tell you. [ laughter ] ah. Crushed. Disappointment. See you at 10 and 11. Captions by caption colorado comments captioncolorado. Com , thirtyeight.
