over san francisco. anser hussein has the story. >> reporter: good morning. women who may come for a company of coffee may sit down, put their purse or handbag on the backs of their chair and they could be a target. here's why. this is a picture of the man known as the bluetooth bandit. san francisco police have surveillance video of the man reaching into purses and bags of the victims as they hang on the chair backs and then reaches in and grabs their wallet. he will use his bluetooth to coordinate with his accomplices, who distract the victims as they are being robbed. this is not some small pickpocket operation. they have racked up tens of thousands in charges as they head out on shopping sprees 20 minutes after the robberies. they hit up stores like costco, apple, even nordstrom. one lady was charged with $15,000 in fraudulent charges or her credit card alone. the bluetooth bandit is described as an african- american male, 40 to 50 years old, between 5'8" and 5'11." san francisco police department says he is nicely dressed with a pidgeon-toed walk. they began their robberies back in jim and took a break but they are back at it again. the san francisco police department wants women to be aware of where you put your handbags and purses at a restaurant and coffee shop anywhere in san francisco. there is no specific area that he is targeting. everyone seems to be fair game. >> thank you, anser hussein in san francisco. police in san rafael hope surveillance video will help them catch the man who robbed a sandwich shop. investigators say the man was armed with a black semi- automatic handgun friday afternoon when he robbed a subway at the marin square shopping center. anyone who recognizes the suspect is urged to contact bay area crimestoppers. 6:02. phillip and nancy garrido will learn their fate today for kidnapping jaycee dugard and holding her captive for 18 years. and the big question is, will jaycee make a statement at the sentencing? dugard was just 11 years old when she was grabbed off a street in south lake tahoe. we'll have a live report on today's sentencing coming up later on. san jose could be forced to lay off more police officers. talks between the city and the police officers association breaking down last night. let's go to elizabeth wenger who joins us now from police headquarters with more on the impact that this could have on public safety. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sydnie. that's right. we're talking layoffs once again in san jose. you know, they really had hoped to get a last-minute deal. but unfortunately, now hope is fading fast to save these 156 police officer jobs. so obviously, some pretty big stakes and, yes, now public safety an issue, as well. let's break it down for new terms of numbers of exactly -- for you in terms of numbers of exactly what we are talking about here. without a deal the city says it will have to lay off 278 officers. an agreement while not saving everyone's job, it will protect 156 of them. the "san jose mercury news" reports the main sticking point right now is changes over pensions. san jose city leaders said they tried everything they could to get a deal done. obviously it still wasn't enough. official with the police department association expressed similar disappointment because they thought they were getting close. of course, looming over this whole situation is a budget deficit. san jose's tenth straight budget gap which now stands at $115 million. six other unions by the way including the firefighters accepted similar cuts in their deals with the city. so yesterday we understand was technically the deadline for getting a deal to present to the city council but obviously there are big stakes when you're talking about more than 150 jobs and public safety so there is a chance the council will still try to get the sides together to hopefully reach an agreement before this actually becomes a done deal and these layoffs become effective. back to you. >> negotiations like this going on all over the bay area with cities who are cash-strapped. elizabeth, thanks very much. elizabeth wenger in san jose. hayward police have questioned a person of interest in the disappearance of a nursing student. the woman was once a friend of 26-year-old michelle le. le was last seen friday after a nursing class at the kaiser permanente building in hayward. so far, investigators say they have talked to several friends and a ton of acquaintances and issued four separate search warrants but no suspects just yet. we will apparently never know the results of the two lie detector tests on the bryan stow beating suspect. giovanni ramirez was in handcuffs when police took him for a polygraph exam yesterday. his defense team had administered a similar test in his jail cell tuesday night. the man who administered that test hinted that ramirez passed but officials say they are not going to be revealing the results. it is 6:05. he is used to being mr. congeniality here in the -- >> but everyone is avoiding him because you're like pigpen with a rain cloud over you. >> i'm like the plague! nobody wants to be around me. we have more showers out there folks scattered around the north bay. it's falling apart as it moves through. just light showers now. i think the weather will improve toward the afternoon melissa cabral reports from the courthouse in placerville. >> reporter: good morning. this is a big question. but one we cannot answer at least at this point. take a look here at the courthouse. you can see they do have an interview area sectioned off because of the nationwide attention this case has received over the last year and a half. sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. phillip garrido could receive a maximum of 431 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping jaycee in 1991 and several counts of sexual assault. nancy garrido will receive 36 years to life sentence for her guilty plea for kidnapping and rape by force. because of california sentencing laws, that penalty does not qualify in this case. this prevents jaycee and her children from testifying at trial. she was held for 18 years in garrido's antioch backyard. rumors are swirling about whether jaycee will confront her attackers at this point. it hasn't been confirmed. it is likely though that catherine hall will be here. hall was one of garrido's rape victims more than 30 years ago that he was convicted and released for. we spoke with nancy garrido's attorney. she does not plan to speak but her attorney will issue an apology on her behalf. whether or not phillip garrido will issue a statement before that sentence is handed down remains to be seen, as well. that's the latest here at the courthouse. melissa cabral for cbs 5. >> and, of course, melissa, i mean, uhm, jaycee and her two daughters, again, uhm, back with her family and trying to get their lives together. she has written a book, hasn't she? >> reporter: she has written a book and that memoir is scheduled to be released in july. so it makes sense that she would be here making a public appearance. but at the same time, as you know, the grand jury indictment in this case is sealed so a lot of the information about her testimony that allowed the grand jury to indict both phillip and nancy garrido is unknown at this point. i know a lot of people are interested to see what's in there and, of course, a lot of those details will be out in her book later this summer. >> well, all eyes will be on placerville around 9:00 today. melissa cabral live in placerville, thank you so much. i know folks tired of the rain but you know what? officer layoffs. elizabeth wenger joins us from police headquarters with the sticking point and just how many jobs might be on the line. good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: that's right. not very good news from here in san jose. you know, they were hoping for an 11th hour deal but as you said, talks broke down yesterday between the police officers association and city leaders. so let's break it down for you in terms of the numbers and what we're talking about here. without a deal, without a deal, the city says it will have it lay off 278 officers. an agreement, while not saving couple of days ago, the council here imposed 10% cuts on four city employee unions that amounts to half of the workforce. so yesterday was technically the deadline to get this deal done and avoid these layoffs or the majority of those layoffs. but again, this is an issue of public safety. we have 156 police officer jobs on the line. so the council is still going to urge both sides to get together to hopefully avoid these major layoffs here in san jose. so frank, we're not sure when the absolute deadline is but it sounds like both sides are at least still open to talking. >> and that's the important thing. as long as they are still talking people are employed and they can work something out, they can keep them employed. that's the bottom line. elizabeth wenger live in san jose, thank you. the cause of an apartment fire under investigation on the 200 block of douglas lane last night is under investigation. neighbors her gunfire during the fire. they believe shotgun shells were in one of the apartments. only one unit was damaged in pleasant hill. nobody was hurt. right now dozens of people without power in the east bay. that outage reported just after 3 a.m. this morning near 44th avenue and international boulevard in oakland. 68 pg&e customers have been affected. at its right there were 1500 people in the dark. no word on what sparked the outage or when it will be restored. time now is 6:36. weather-wise, well, thought remains the same i guess. >> if you sleep in you may miss most of this one. this one starting to fall apart right now. so folks stay in bed a little longer. we a couple of scattered showers out there now, most of that into the north bay. but i think this storm system winding down in a hurry now as the cloud tops turn from the nice cold white to warmer stuff a good sign that the system is falling apart and that's we're seeing on the doppler, too. we'll see more sunshine in the afternoon. we could use it. temperatures near 70 dugard. a big question is whether dugard will speak at this morning's sentencing in placerville at 9 a.m. they pled guilty in april to kidnapping and rape charges. they held jaycee dugard captive for nearly 18 years in antioch. both garridos are expected to spend life in prison. two lie detector tests but officials say the results will be a secret. that is the story for the man accused of beating least four people are dead, a dozen others injured. today the area is under a state of emergency. northern california also had a tornado yesterday part of a big storm that moved across the sacramento valley. the tornado hit a few miles north of yuba city. the national weather service will determine how strong it was. >> wild day yesterday. a lot of clouds over the bay now. most of the showers have been in the north bay and that's where it continues this morning. light showers there beginning to break up a bit. looking toward santa rosa, scattered light showers there, toward northern sonoma clouds out there at this hour. by the afternoon, well, it will be partly cloudy but we are going to warm those temperatures up just a bit. near 70 the warmest spots inland, 60s inside the bay and 50s the altamont pass to 680. delays start at 205 so that's a sluggish commute. westbound highway 4 tapping the brakes from lone tree to somersville and a few brakes in pittsburg westbound 4. 101 heading to sfo, not bad, looks good through san mateo, north of there into burlingame, san bruno, 280 also problem-free. heading into san francisco some slight delays, the usual stuff northbound. not too bad overall. 101 near candlestick traffic nice in both directions. not the case at the bay bridge toll plaza, check this out. traffic is stacked up slow and go. the metering lights are on. looks like we are seeing some slight delays now coming off the eastshore freeway. looking at 20 minutes now west 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. if you're tacking 880 northbound to the maze and towards the bay bridge toll plaza, we are seeing extra volume here. but still okay speeds, southbound cruising not a bad ride at all. you are going to see some slightly slower speeds as you hit hayward, but overall not too bad. still a good drive. and the golden gate bridge looking good, as well. both directions clear, not a bad right, as well. live look at 101 in san jose and so far traffic actually looking good in the south bay just extra volume. that's traffic, back to you guys. >> thank you. wall street coming off one of its worst days in nearly a year and new unemployment numbers are coming out this morning. >> here now is jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. jason, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, sydnie. good morning, frank. we can only hope for a better day today on wall street. the latest economic signals ensure the economy is hitting a soft patch. really did some damage to the numbers yesterday. the dow loss over 2% of its value. it was its worst single day session since august of last year. we are getting more economic numbers out there this morning. the job market is in focus. first time weekly unemployment claims fell by 6,000 to 422,000. it's the first drop but still too high to suggest any meaningful job growth. need to see that number below 400,000. and in the meantime, employers are getting about as much as they possibly can out of their employees. worker productivity in the 1st quarter rose 1.8%. a big slowdown from the prior quarter when there was a 2.9% gain. employers essentially need to start to ramp up hiring to further get any productivity gains. there is the big head wind right now because there isn't a lot of hiring going on. retailers also reporting their may sales numbers for the most part a pretty mixed month. a lot of consumers concerned about all the money they have to shell out for gas and groceries. so they are pulling back in other areas. san francisco-based gap continues to disappoint. we have had a rough year so far. and the sales numbers across its three major chains was down 4% in may. ross continues to do better mainly because of its discounted items. ross sales were up 4%. and that did beat wall street expectations. market off to a mixed start. a lot of nervousness out there. moody downgrade greece's credit rating, nailing the market. same this morning. dow down by 45, nasdaq down 1. the musical i have to say it delivers on every front. a $2million budget and it shows. the music and lyrics make you want to swing your polyester pants from beginning to end. [ laughter ] >> you have those, don't you, frank? >> somewhere. >> performance are solid. betsy wilson is perfect as marianne singleton. judy case with the pot smoking mrs. madrigal. >> and there is heart and emotion. i was crying like a little girl throughout this. at the same time, i was overjoyed. it took you on a ride like nothing else. you will not be disappointed if you love the books, if you love the pbs series. so full marks, act, for delivering this really ambitious project, a delicious project but giving us reasons many more reasons more to love armstead morton and his tales. >> you know what? gasoline that cleans. chevron with techron. care for your car. anser hassan is in san francisco, where police are trying to find a credit card thief. welcome back. he usually has a bluetooth in his ear when he is ripping women on. anser hussein in san francisco where police are trying to find a credit card thief. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they are calling him the bluetooth bandit because he uses a bluetooth earpiece to coordinate his robberies. here's a picture of the suggestion respect known as the bluetooth bandit. he is targeting women, women who hang their bags or purses on the backs of their chairs while at a restaurant or a coffee shop throughout san francisco. he is even targeting women on muni. san francisco police department has surveillance video of the suspect using his bluetooth to coordinate with his accomplices. they will distract the victim as they are being robbed. the bandit has racked up tens of thousands in fraudulent charges. he uses the credit card of his victims to make purchases at stores like apple, target, even nordstrom's. the bluetooth bandit is a black man, probably 40 to 50, and always nicely dressed. now, san francisco pd wants people to be mindful of where they place their bags or purses and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. reporting live, anser hussein, cbs 5. >> thank you. in about two hours, phillip and phillip garrido will learn their fate for the kidnap and rape of jaycee dugard. the question, will jaycee dugard make a statement at the sentencing? she was just 11 years old when she was grabbed off of the street in south lake tahoe. she was kept in the garridos' backyard in antioch for nearly 18 years. and hopes are fading for a deal that would reduce the number of layoffs in the san jose police department. talks broke down yesterday with negotiators from the city and the police officers association unable to reach agreement on pension changes. without a deal, the city says it will have to lay off 278 officers. an agreement could save 156 of those jobs. 6:57. it's your thursday. are we going to have sunshine today?
